The first series was a hardtop introduced to the public at the Tokyo Motor Show in 1989. It went on sale in Japan exclusively in May 1990 and won that year's Japan Car of the Year award. It was created by splicing an extra 6.6 cm (2.6 in) right down the middle of the Mitsubishi Galant, which itself had won the Japan Car of the Year award in 1987. The Diamante's platform was also used for the sporty Mitsubishi 3000GT.

The name Diamante was derived from the Spanish, Portuguese, and Italian word for "diamond" and was adopted also as homage to the Mitsubishi badge which is composed of three diamonds. In Japan, this vehicle was sold at a specific retail chain called Car Plaza.

THE HEATER IS POSITIONED DIRECTLY ABOVE THE CAR'S COMPUTER , OR ECU , AND THEREFORE CAUSING PROBLEMS WITH THE ENGINE, TRANSMISSION, SUSPENSION, ETC.. THE BILINGUAL ENGLISH/SPANISH REMOVABLE AIR BAG WARNING LABELS AFFIXED TO THE DASH AND TO THE SUNVISOR DO NOT MEET THE SIZE REQUIREMENTS OF THE STANDARD.

THE OWNER'S MANUAL DOES NOT CONTAIN A STEP-BY-STEP DESCRIPTION FOR HEADREST ADJUSTMENT WHEN INSTALLING A CHILD RESTRAINT SYSTEM (CRS) TETHER STRAP.
  • Consequence: IF THE TETHER STRAP IS IMPROPERLY INSTALLED TO THE TETHER ANCHOR, THE CHILD SAFETY SEAT MAY NOT BE SUFFICIENT RESTRAINED. IN THE EVENT OF A CRASH, THE CHILD COULD BE INJURED.
  • Remedy: A LETTER OUTLINING THE PROBLEM WILL BE SENT TO OWNERS ALONG WITH A STICKER CONTAINING THE CORRECT INSTRUCTIONS AS WELL AS INSTRUCTIONS ON WHERE TO AFFIX THE STICKER IN THE OWNER'S MANUAL. THE RECALL BEGAN ON MARCH 29, 2004. OWNERS SHOULD CONTACT MITSUBISHI AT 1-888-648-7820.

  • Summary: ON CERTAIN PASSENGER VEHICLES, THE MAIN UNDER HOOD ELECTRICAL WIRING HARNESS MAY HAVE INSUFFICIENT CLEARANCE BETWEEN THE ENGINE CONTROL HARNESS AND THE EXHAUST HEAT SHIELD. AS A RESULT, THE HARNESS COULD COME IN CONTACT WITH THE HEAT SHIELD, WHICH COULD RESULT IN MELTING OF THE HARNESS INSULATION.
  • Consequence: THE MELTING OF THE HARNESS INSULATION COULD RESULT IN GROUNDING OF THE CRANK ANGLE SENSOR WIRING, CAUSING THE ENGINE TO RUN ERRATICALLY OR STOP SUDDENLY, INCREASING THE RISK OF A CRASH.
  • Remedy: DEALERS WILL INSPECT THE HARNESS FOR DAMAGE AND, IF NONE IS EVIDENT, WILL TIE THE HARNESS BACK TO PREVENT THE HARNESS FROM EVER COMING INTO CONTACT WITH THE HEAT SHIELD. ANY HARNESS THAT SHOWS EVIDENCE OF DAMAGE WILL BE REPAIRED AS NECESSARY AND THEN TIED BACK TO PREVENT FUTURE DAMAGE. OWNER NOTIFICATION BEGAN MAY 13, 2002. OWNERS WHO TAKE THEIR VEHICLES TO AN AUTHORIZED DEALER ON AN AGREED UPON SERVICE DATE AND DO NOT RECEIVE THE FREE REMEDY WITHIN A REASONABLE TIME SHOULD CONTACT MITSUBISHI AT 1-800-222-0037.

    The styling is not bad and it offers a decent amount of amenities for the price. What really sold me was the 6 year 0% interest financing, which is an unbeatable value. The passenger compartment is roomy and the back seat has plenty of leg room. Although the memory seat function is flawed and erases itself regularly, and there is no home link for the garage remote, the heated mirrors are poor. Unfortunately, the transmission is the worst feature. I have had it in the shop several times for the transmission, as it has shift 'flairs' and feels like it slips. Despite having the clutches replaced, the valve body and ports replaced, the problem persists about 40-50% of the time. It is very annoying and for this reason alone, I cannot wait to sell it.

    I bought my VR-X back in 2002 and have put over 50K miles on it since then. As a frequent commuter between Charleston, SC and Atlanta, you might catch a glimpse of me on the road! Overall, I think it's a great car. However, I do have one complaint - the Goodyear Tires are terrible and I'm getting ready to replace them. Unfortunately, I've noticed more of these cars on the road lately, so it's not quite as unique as it used to be. But I suppose that's good news for some!

    The 2002 Diamante has a lot of head and leg room. It's the best car I've ever purchased. The comfort level is amazing, and the ride is smooth and quiet. I feel that the Diamante is an incredibly reliable ride, and the features it comes with are simply unbelievable.

    I bought this pre-owned automobile in November 2003 with 32000 miles for around $14k, which is half its original retail price. I have only had to do a brake job, but other than that, I have been enjoying this luxury/sport sedan without any problems. Everything that made me want this car in the first place still makes me smile today. My previous car was a Lexus LS 400, but I had to sell it due to high mileage and expensive repairs. I needed to find something that could compare to its ride quality, luxury, and performance for a reasonable price, and this Mitsubishi fits the bill perfectly!
