Common 2010 Mercury Mariner hybrid problems

The Mercury Mariner Hybrid, produced between 2005 and 2011, is known for several common problems that have been reported by owners. These issues mainly concern the hybrid propulsion system, steering system, and engine.

  • Steering Torque Sensor Issues: Certain model years of the Mercury Mariner (2008-2011) have a steering torque sensor that may not be able to properly detect driver steering input. This can result in the Electric Power Steering (EPS) assist being removed, making steering more difficult and potentially dangerous. Ford is recalling these vehicles and dealers will update the software for the power steering control module (PSCM) and the instrument cluster module free of charge.
  • Fuel Delivery Module (FDM) Cracks: The Fuel Delivery Module (FDM) on 2010-2012 Ford Escape and 2010-2011 Mercury Mariner vehicles with a 3.0L engine may crack, causing a fuel leak. This issue can increase the risk of a fire. Ford is recalling these vehicles and dealers will replace the FDM flange with a redesigned one free of charge.
  • Engine Issues: Owners have reported various engine problems, including sudden power loss, smoking from the engine compartment, and surges. These issues can be caused by a variety of factors, including faulty electronic throttle bodies (ETBs) that are prone to sudden surges, dangerous stalls, and being sent into 'limp home mode'.
  • Transmission Issues: Transmission problems, such as transmission failure, have also been reported by Mercury Mariner owners. These issues can result in the vehicle being unable to move, which can be a significant inconvenience and safety concern.

In general, it is important for Mercury Mariner owners to be aware of these common issues and to have their vehicles inspected and maintained regularly to prevent or address these problems.

STEERING PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2023-10-01
  • VIN: 4M2CN9HG9AK
  • Components: STEERING
  • Summary: The power steering assist is malfunctioning and it is available for inspection upon request. The steering wheel is very difficult to turn, it's as if the power steering assist is keeping the wheel from turning. No, but I spoke to someone at Ford and they said that it sounded like my car should be in the recall that was announced for my vehicle type but my VIN was not included in the recall. My car has not been inspected by anyone but it says right on the dash board digital display that there is a "Power Steering Assist Fault". Ford does this with many vehicles they recall, a lot of vehicles that should be included in the recalls are not and we're supposed to foot the bill for their lack of concern for public safety? It's going to cause an accident but it's my only working car and I can't afford to pay for their mistakes. How many have died due to their negligence I'm wondering.

There are several recalls associated with the make and model of the vehicle, but they do not appear to be associated with the VIN on my vehicle. STEERING,SUSPENSION,FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2023-06-19
  • VIN: 4M2CN9B71AK
  • Components: STEERING,SUSPENSION,FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM
  • Summary: I recently purchase 2010 Mercury Mariner. There is a few errors appearing on the screen in front of the steering wheel. One of the error is "CHECK FUEL LINES." It also has an error about the tire pressure sensor. It also rides roughly, but the wheels are like new, so it feels like the suspension or shocks have something wrong with them. Also, there is a lot of play in the steering wheel when driving it. When I went to check on the recalls in the system by putting in my VIN, it shows that there are no recalls on my vehicle. However, these errors and issues are connected to the recalls for my vehicle. I am sure that these recalls have not been taken care of for this vehicle and they need to be fixed.

ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,ENGINE PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2022-05-14
  • VIN: 4M2CN8B78AK
  • Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,ENGINE
  • Summary: When the weather is hot (close to 100 degrees or more) and I am driving with the a/c - my vehicle on 3 occasions will not start after parking the vehicle and trying to restart it. The red padlock sign blinks and it won't start. At first it is trying to turnover but then will continually sound worse and all other warning lights go haywire. I leave the car alone for half a day and it starts up again like nothing happened. On the fourth occasion, the car stopped while driving, just a quiet shutdown and the car glided. This time it did not work for over 24 hours and then started up again like nothing happened. Multiple mechanics and also the dealership cannot figure out the problem because by the time i have it towed to shop, it works again. They did a full check on the car and cannot find anything wrong and there were no diagnostic codes. This issue happens when the weather is hot and poses a safety concern as now it is shutting off while driving and I become stranded each time. (First incident happened 8/25/18, last incident 5/14/22) Total of 4.

STEERING PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2022-01-02
  • VIN: 4M2CN9B72AK
  • Components: STEERING
  • Summary: "Power Steering Assist Fault" message appeared, and the steering became stiff, indicating the power steering stopped working. This happened while coming down from a snowy mountain pass, which put myself, my passengers, and other vehicles at risk. Even though there was a 2014 recall for this problem, I was told by Ford dealership that there were no open recalls on my car (indicating it was either fixed and broke again, or my car was never included in the recall-- as I purchased the vehicle secondhand, I am unsure which it is). It will be a $1200 fix fat this Ford dealership for a known and dangerous problem that should, but won't, be covered by the previous recall. There should be an easier way to track fixed recalls through the NHTSA Vin lookup program.

It started right back up with no lights on, I went half a block & stopped at a stop sign but while stopped the engine reved up. I was worried I was going to be in an accident. Then the "wrench" light came back on, since I was close to home I figured I'd just try to get home. About another block, the check engine light came on & was making strange noises. I kept my vehicle at about 5-10 mph & got it home. My car was very jerky.

Negative 2010 Mercury Mariner hybrid car reviews

  1. Kale Crooks 2025-01-09

I'm glad I found this SUV because it met all my needs perfectly. It has great fuel economy, four-wheel-drive, and is still spacious enough for me and my belongings. Although, I must admit that the ride can be a bit bumpy and there is some engine, wind, and road noise. The exterior styling may not be the most exciting, and the interior materials could be of better quality. I'm currently getting around 30 MPG in the winter and 35 MPG in the summer (mostly highway driving), which is impressive. Overall, I'm happy with my purchase, but I think there are other cars out there that are more comfortable and almost as fuel-efficient, such as the Subaru Forester, Toyota RAV4, or even a new 2012 Ford Focus. What do you think?

Positive 2010 Mercury Mariner hybrid car reviews

  1. Oscar Nader 2024-11-13

I am so impressed with this car! It's definitely the coolest car I've ever driven. I do find it a bit puzzling that Ford seems to undervalue it, given the limited features and colors compared to the V6. However, I think they should be proud of themselves for creating such a fantastic vehicle. In my opinion, this car should be the flagship vehicle for Mercury. It's so much fun to drive, especially when it goes into EV mode, and the efficiency and fit and finish are amazing. The NAV system and stereo are both awesome, and the fact that it comes with free Sirius for 3 years is a great bonus! My wife and I both loved it so much that we each got one!

  2. Wendell Thiel 2024-11-07

This has been one of my favorite cars! I traded down from a Lexus GX to buy this. The gas mileage is much better and I love the car for my short trips about town. I have the Kiwi green with white interior with plenty of room for family, dogs and everything else. It's such a fun car!

  3. Rasheed Batz 2024-10-21

I love this car! Although I miss the four-wheel drive of my previous Honda CR-V, I decided to go with the FWD model of the Mariner Hybrid. After 10 years of driving a Honda, I have returned to Ford via Mercury, and I must say that the ride is incredibly smooth and comfortable. I drive a combination of city and highway, and I am pleasantly surprised that even when I shut off the economy to keep the A/C compressor running, my gas mileage is still high! In Charlotte, NC, my gas mileage has been around 29-32 mpg with the A/C running and the economy setting at 31-34. This is over 10+ mpg more than my 2005 Honda CR-V, where I achieved 19-24 mpg. The car is roomy, comfortable, and fun to drive, and there is no sacrifice in power either!

  4. Humberto Kuphal 2024-10-20

Last year, I test drove the 2007 Ford Escape Hybrid (cousin of the Mariner), but I was underwhelmed. The fit and finish wasn't impressive, it wasn't a very smooth ride, and the nav system was terrible. However, this year, I found myself in the hybrid market again. I test drove the Toyota Highlander Hybrid and Rav4, but before making a decision, I decided to test drive the newly redesigned 2008 Mercury Mariner (influenced by reviews on this site). I have to say, the test drive was amazing! The Mariner was very plush, had a top-notch nav system, and a very smooth ride. I opted for the FWD version and I'm loving it! Fully loaded, I paid much less than a stripped Highlander!

  5. Howell Kuhlman 2024-09-17

This hybrid is awesome! I'm so glad I bought it for my wife. I find myself trying to find ways to get the keys from her hands because this Mariner is just so fun to drive and well-appointed. Everything about it just wows me. I'm definitely pleased, and the tax incentive will definitely help offset the cost. You must go drive and try it out. If you can afford to spend a little more, it's definitely worth it!
