Common Mercury Mariner hybrid problems

The Mercury Mariner, a compact SUV produced by Ford Motor Company, has been known to have several issues, particularly with its transmission and hybrid propulsion system.

Transmission Problems:
The Mercury Mariner has faced significant transmission problems, with the 2006 model year being the worst for transmission issues.

Hybrid Propulsion System Recall:
The Mercury Mariner hybrid electric vehicles from model years 2005-2008 were recalled due to a coolant pump failure in the hybrid system, which could result in the hybrid electronics overheating.

Visibility Recall:
The Mercury Mariner was also affected by a recall for windshield wiper motor issues. Certain trucks, passenger cars, and sport utility vehicles, including the Mercury Mariner, were found to have windshield wiper motors that may have been produced without grease being applied to the output shaft gear.

In summary, the Mercury Mariner has faced significant issues with its transmission and hybrid propulsion system, leading to recalls and numerous complaints from owners. These issues can result in costly repairs and may affect the vehicle's safety and reliability.

We had this car last us over 300,000 miles. We put it through a lot of work in a decade because we were a single-car family and made quite a few road trips in it around the country. We had to replace the transmission around 220,000 miles and did some front end work after that.

2011

For the 2011 model year, the Mariner featured HD Radio as a standard, but continued with the same features as the 2010 models. This version of the Mariner was its last, as Ford discontinued the Mercury brand due to declining sales. Ford ended production of the Mariner in October 2010.

  • Date Of Incident: 2023-10-01
  • Date Complaint: 2024-02-04
  • VIN: 4M2CN9HG9AK
  • Components: STEERING
  • Summary: The power steering assist is malfunctioning and it is available for inspection upon request. The steering wheel is very difficult to turn, it's as if the power steering assist is keeping the wheel from turning. No, but I spoke to someone at Ford and they said that it sounded like my car should be in the recall that was announced for my vehicle type but my VIN was not included in the recall. My car has not been inspected by anyone but it says right on the dash board digital display that there is a "Power Steering Assist Fault". Ford does this with many vehicles they recall, a lot of vehicles that should be included in the recalls are not and we're supposed to foot the bill for their lack of concern for public safety? It's going to cause an accident but it's my only working car and I can't afford to pay for their mistakes. How many have died due to their negligence I'm wondering.

  • Date Complaint: 2023-06-20
  • VIN: 4M2CN9B71AK
  • Components: STEERING,SUSPENSION,FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM
  • Summary: I recently purchase 2010 Mercury Mariner. There is a few errors appearing on the screen in front of the steering wheel. One of the error is "CHECK FUEL LINES." It also has an error about the tire pressure sensor. It also rides roughly, but the wheels are like new, so it feels like the suspension or shocks have something wrong with them. Also, there is a lot of play in the steering wheel when driving it. When I went to check on the recalls in the system by putting in my VIN, it shows that there are no recalls on my vehicle. However, these errors and issues are connected to the recalls for my vehicle. I am sure that these recalls have not been taken care of for this vehicle and they need to be fixed.

  • VIN: 4M2CN8B78AK
  • Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,ENGINE
  • Summary: When the weather is hot (close to 100 degrees or more) and I am driving with the a/c - my vehicle on 3 occasions will not start after parking the vehicle and trying to restart it. The red padlock sign blinks and it won't start. At first it is trying to turnover but then will continually sound worse and all other warning lights go haywire. I leave the car alone for half a day and it starts up again like nothing happened. On the fourth occasion, the car stopped while driving, just a quiet shutdown and the car glided. This time it did not work for over 24 hours and then started up again like nothing happened. Multiple mechanics and also the dealership cannot figure out the problem because by the time i have it towed to shop, it works again. They did a full check on the car and cannot find anything wrong and there were no diagnostic codes. This issue happens when the weather is hot and poses a safety concern as now it is shutting off while driving and I become stranded each time. (First incident happened 8/25/18, last incident 5/14/22) Total of 4.

I recently acquired a 2008 Mariner with 25K miles. Although it has great gas mileage, I found the vehicle to be quite noisy and uncomfortable. I would recommend test driving and comparing it to other vehicles in this category before making a decision. It's worth noting that this car is similar to the Ford Escape, so you may have a similar experience. Thank you for considering my input.

  2. Kameron Kreiger 2025-02-08

    Vehicle year: 2009

I live in Wisconsin, where the weather can vary greatly between snow and heat. To tackle each season, I chose a used Mercury Mariner Hybrid 2008 AWD. I added my own receiver and mounted it under the GPS receiver that comes with the car. I also added a 10-inch sub in the back. The hybrid battery can handle rumbling from the sub even when it's directly on top of the compartment that the hybrid battery is in. In the winter, this vehicle can easily get through snow and handle ice with below 0 temperatures. In the summer, the car has not overheated in over 100-degree F temperatures. The interior looks nice, but the material is poor. The outside looks decent but has some rust above the wheels, and the paint has survived 8 years and still looks decent. When driving at 70mph on the highway, I get an average of 23-25 mpg. If I go around 65mph, I get an average of 24-27mpg. In town, the hybrid battery mode kicks in when you stop quickly or are going slow (usually slower than 25mph), which just uses hybrid battery power and not gas. This makes the car almost silent, and you can achieve up to 60mpg with the battery fully on. If you are varying slow and fast speeds, you should be able to get at least 25-40 mpg in town. The only issues I have had were my steering column starting to fail, which cost me around $1000 to fix, and one tie rod needing to be replaced, as well as both of the front wheel brake sensor and tone rings needing to be replaced.Lastly, my transfer case had to be replaced, but don't worry, it's most likely due to the 22 inch rims I used to have on the vehicle. Overall, I think this is a pretty decent buy for a used hybrid mini SUV that also has AWD.

It's a Ford Escape with a Mercury label. You can do lots of city, highway, and off-road driving with no major complaints. It's the perfect size for an SUV. The interior styling is no-frills-American, but even the luxury model comes with leather, seat heaters, and a fancy radio. I'm not saying I don't like the vehicle, it's very practical and comfortable.

  4. Kale Crooks 2025-01-09

    Vehicle year: 2010

I'm glad I found this SUV because it met all my needs perfectly. It has great fuel economy, four-wheel-drive, and is still spacious enough for me and my belongings. Although, I must admit that the ride can be a bit bumpy and there is some engine, wind, and road noise. The exterior styling may not be the most exciting, and the interior materials could be of better quality. I'm currently getting around 30 MPG in the winter and 35 MPG in the summer (mostly highway driving), which is impressive. Overall, I'm happy with my purchase, but I think there are other cars out there that are more comfortable and almost as fuel-efficient, such as the Subaru Forester, Toyota RAV4, or even a new 2012 Ford Focus. What do you think?

  5. Jan Tremblay 2024-09-15

    Vehicle year: 2006

The price was $33K, but I did manage to get 5 years of 0% financing. It's important to remember to change the oil, filters, and headlight bulbs periodically, but overall I've had no major issues in the 12 years that I've owned it, despite putting 96K miles on it.

I've had the Mariner for 5 months now and it's been an excellent vehicle to drive. I'm averaging 31+ MPG with mixed mode driving and recently drove a 200 mile trip where I averaged 33+ MPG. It's a great vehicle with a roomy interior. I absolutely love the sunroof and enjoy trying to get the best gas mileage possible. I traded in a Dodge Caravan (14+ MPG) and have been saving lots of money since. Overall, I highly recommend the Mariner!

I found this truck to be a smooth ride on rough roads. The seats were comfortable and the economy was unbelievable. It also had good pickup for an SUV, which was nice with the premium package.

  3. Claude Harber 2025-02-07

    Vehicle year: 2007

It's such a comfortable and fun car to drive, and it handles beautifully. Although my previous cars were 2 Mountaineers, a Ford Explorer, and a sports car, in that order, this car does seem small and car-like to me. However, it did very well last week in a close encounter with a large deer. It's so easy to park in the city, and it keeps up well with semi-trucks on the freeway. (I drive 35 miles to work in the city and live in the country down a 1100 ft long drive.) It's an excellent utility vehicle; it may not haul as much as a larger ute, but it gets much better gas mileage and still holds a lot of gardening gear and plants in the back. The drive is very quiet, and the fit and finish are exceptional. (Yes, I would definitely buy another one and recommend it to my friends.)

Hi there! I hope you're doing well. I wanted to share my experience with my Mercury Mariner. I've had it for 5 years and it's been great, with the exception of needing new tires and brakes. Unfortunately, last week after a short trip, my car caught fire while parked in my garage, causing damage to both my garage and my wife's car. I just wanted to give a friendly heads up to current and future owners of this car so that they can take any necessary precautions and avoid any potential issues. Thanks for listening!
