Common Mercury Mariner hybrid problems

The Mercury Mariner, a compact SUV produced by Ford Motor Company, has been known to have several issues, particularly with its transmission and hybrid propulsion system.

Transmission Problems:
The Mercury Mariner has faced significant transmission problems, with the 2006 model year being the worst for transmission issues.

Hybrid Propulsion System Recall:
The Mercury Mariner hybrid electric vehicles from model years 2005-2008 were recalled due to a coolant pump failure in the hybrid system, which could result in the hybrid electronics overheating.

Certain trucks, passenger cars, and sport utility vehicles, including the Mercury Mariner, were found to have windshield wiper motors that may have been produced without grease being applied to the output shaft gear.

  • Date Of Incident: 2023-10-01
  • Date Complaint: 2024-02-04
  • VIN: 4M2CN9HG9AK
  • Components: STEERING
  • Summary: The power steering assist is malfunctioning and it is available for inspection upon request. The steering wheel is very difficult to turn, it's as if the power steering assist is keeping the wheel from turning. No, but I spoke to someone at Ford and they said that it sounded like my car should be in the recall that was announced for my vehicle type but my VIN was not included in the recall. My car has not been inspected by anyone but it says right on the dash board digital display that there is a "Power Steering Assist Fault". Ford does this with many vehicles they recall, a lot of vehicles that should be included in the recalls are not and we're supposed to foot the bill for their lack of concern for public safety? It's going to cause an accident but it's my only working car and I can't afford to pay for their mistakes. How many have died due to their negligence I'm wondering.

  • Date Complaint: 2023-06-20
  • VIN: 4M2CN9B71AK
  • Components: STEERING,SUSPENSION,FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM
  • Summary: I recently purchase 2010 Mercury Mariner. There is a few errors appearing on the screen in front of the steering wheel. One of the error is "CHECK FUEL LINES." It also has an error about the tire pressure sensor. It also rides roughly, but the wheels are like new, so it feels like the suspension or shocks have something wrong with them. Also, there is a lot of play in the steering wheel when driving it. When I went to check on the recalls in the system by putting in my VIN, it shows that there are no recalls on my vehicle. However, these errors and issues are connected to the recalls for my vehicle. I am sure that these recalls have not been taken care of for this vehicle and they need to be fixed.

  • Date Complaint: 2022-06-05
  • VIN: 4M2CN8B78AK
  • Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,ENGINE
  • Summary: When the weather is hot (close to 100 degrees or more) and I am driving with the a/c - my vehicle on 3 occasions will not start after parking the vehicle and trying to restart it. The red padlock sign blinks and it won't start. At first it is trying to turnover but then will continually sound worse and all other warning lights go haywire. I leave the car alone for half a day and it starts up again like nothing happened. On the fourth occasion, the car stopped while driving, just a quiet shutdown and the car glided. This time it did not work for over 24 hours and then started up again like nothing happened. Multiple mechanics and also the dealership cannot figure out the problem because by the time i have it towed to shop, it works again. They did a full check on the car and cannot find anything wrong and there were no diagnostic codes. This issue happens when the weather is hot and poses a safety concern as now it is shutting off while driving and I become stranded each time. (First incident happened 8/25/18, last incident 5/14/22) Total of 4.

I recently acquired a 2008 Mariner with 25K miles. Although it has great gas mileage, I found the vehicle to be quite loud and uncomfortable. I would recommend test driving and comparing it to other vehicles in this category before making a decision. It's worth noting that this car is similar to the Ford Escape, so you may have a similar experience. Thank you for considering my input.

If you are considering purchasing this car, it is important to note that it requires regular use to maintain its functionality. The owner's manual recommends driving the car at least once a week for 20-30 minutes to recharge the FHV battery. Unfortunately, the previous owner of this '09 Mercury Mariner did not follow this recommendation, resulting in costly repairs. It is important to keep this in mind when considering the purchase of a Ford Hybrid.

  4. Colt Schoen 2025-03-09

This car is really enjoyable to drive! It has great power, handles well, and gets good mileage. However, I was disappointed to find out that the CD-player is not MP3-capable, despite what the sticker and website data sheet say. Even with the premium package, it still can't play MP3s. The salesmen initially told me it could play MP3s, but later admitted that he didn't know what an MP3 was and was just going off the sticker. Unfortunately, the service people were not very helpful either. It's frustrating to spend so much money on a radio that can't even play MP3s. Just keep in mind that the dealer and service people may not be very knowledgeable about the electronics.

    Vehicle year: 2007

You'll love the good handling and mileage of this car! While the power is adequate, the navigator system could use some improvement with its small screen and use of multiple CDs. Unfortunately, there is no temperature indicator and the A/C lacks thermostatic control. The ride can be a bit harsh and the wheel adjustment doesn't go as high as some may prefer. Additionally, this car does not have electronic stability control, which some may consider a must-have for a new car.

  2. King Cummerata 2025-04-16

    Vehicle year: 2010

I've owned the car for just over a month and I'm really enjoying the great mileage I'm getting. So far, I'm averaging 32.3 mpg overall, over 34 MPG when I'm driving, and 29+ when my wife is driving (she has a lead foot!). I was pleasantly surprised with the acceleration of the hybrid system. Before ordering the hybrid system, I test drove the v6 model to see how I liked the overall car, and I believe the hybrid is even quicker. The passenger space is comparable to larger SUVs, but it lacks cargo room for long trips. I would love to see more options for the interior, especially for the premiere package, such as more colors and materials. The satellite radio, NAV, and SYNC are all top-notch and work really well. Overall, it's a very fun and solid SUV with great MPG as well as performance.

I checked out the Escape and stumbled upon the Mariner on the lot. I've put a couple of thousand miles on it and I still really enjoy the driving experience. My boys love it too, which is a big change from the Odyssey we traded in. It's become my go-to vehicle for commuting and weekend adventures, although it's a bit limited in terms of luggage space. To solve this, we picked up a Yakima luggage carrier. I'm curious if anyone has experience driving it on soft sand, as I'm a bit skeptical of that claim.

I've been driving this car for almost 3 months now and I'm really pleased with it! It's so agile and easy to park, which is great for city driving. Even though I'm 6'-3

  5. Eddie Senger 2025-03-25

    Vehicle year: 2010

I've had the Mariner for 5 months now and it's been an excellent vehicle to drive. I'm averaging 31+ MPG with mixed mode driving and recently drove a 200 mile trip where I averaged 33+ MPG. It's a great vehicle with a roomy interior. I absolutely love the sunroof and enjoy trying to get the best gas mileage possible. I traded in a Dodge Caravan (14+ MPG) and have been saving lots of money since. Overall, I highly recommend the Mariner!
