SUSPENSION,STRUCTURE PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2017-06-26
- VIN: 4M2CU39H07K
- Components: SUSPENSION,STRUCTURE
- Summary: PASSENGER SIDE REAR INNER FENDER WELL RUSTED COMPLETELY THROUGH ABOVE THE REAR SHOCK CAUSING THE SHOCK TO POTENTIALLY BREAK THROUGH AND DROP THE WHOLE SUSPENSION AND CAUSE AND ACCIDENT OR FLIP OVER IF IT BROKE THROUGH DURING A TURN. THE REST OF THE VEHICLE HARDLY HAS ANY RUST ON IT. THE MARINER SHARES THE SAME INNER SHEET METAL AS THE FORD ESCAPE AND THERE HAVE BEEN MANY COMPLAINTS OF THIS HAPPENING TO ESCAPES. MY VEHICLE WAS STUDIED AT A FORD INVESTIGATION ABOUT 4 YEARS AGO FOR THIS PROBLEM. I WAS TOLD THEY WERE WORKING ON A SOLUTION AND NOTHING EVER HAPPENED. THE EMPLOYEE TOLD ME THAT THE UNDERCOATING THEY USED OF THESE YEARS OF ESCAPE/MARINERS WAS FAULTY AND BROKE DOWN PREMATURELY CAUSING THE INNER FENDER EXPOSED TO THE ELEMENTS. THIS IS ALSO HAPPENING ON THE DRIVER'S SIDE WHERE THE UNDERCOATING IS START TO BREAK DOWN. THIS IS NOT A CASE OF MISUSE BY THE OWNER BUT AN ACTUAL DESIGN FLAW AND A BIG SAFETY ISSUE AS THIS COULD CAUSE A LOT OF HARM. LUCKILY I HEARD THE LOUD KNOCKING FROM THE REAR END AND STOPPED DRIVING IT.
SERVICE BRAKES PROBLEM

- Summary: THE POWER STEERING WENT OUT IN MY MOTHER'S 2007 MARINER HYBRID WITH 72,000 MILES DUE TO FAILURE OF THE POWER STEERING CONTROL MODULE. AFTER SEARCHING ONLINE FORUMS, I FOUND THIS TO BE A RATHER COMMON ISSUE ON THE 05-07 MARINER AND ESCAPE HYBRIDS. THE REPAIR WILL COST JUST UNDER A THOUSAND DOLLARS ONCE YOU LOCATE THE PART. AFTER HAVING IT DIAGNOSED AT MY FORD DEALER, I CONTACTED FORD CUSTOMER CARE TO SEE IF THEY COULD RESOLVE THE ISSUE, AND THEY ACTED LIKE IT WAS SOMETHING THEY WERE UNAWARE OF EVEN THOUGH IT DOES NOT TAKE MUCH SEARCHING TO SEE IT'S A COMMON PROBLEM. ALSO IT'S A SAFETY ISSUE. THE SAME PART WAS RECALLED ON THE 08-11 ESCAPE AND MARINER HYBRIDS, AND THE RECALL SHOULD HAVE INCLUDED THE 05-07 AS WELL. - VIN: 4M2CU39H97K
- Components: POWER TRAIN,ENGINE,FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM
- Summary: I WAS DRIVING MY '07 MARINER HYBRID ON THE NJ TURNPIKE AT FREEWAY SPEEDS WHEN THE RED TRIANGLE & MESSAGE "STOP SAFELY NOW" APPEARED ON THE DASH. THE PROPULSION SYSTEM STOPPED AND I WAS ABLE TO NAVIGATE OFF TO THE SHOULDER AND BRING THE VEHICLE TO A SAFE STOP. HAVING AN IMMEDIATE LOSS OF POWER WHILE TRAVELING ON THE TURNPIKE WAS VERY SCARY AND I FELT UNSAFE KNOWING THAT I DIDN'T HAVE ANY OPTIONS BUT TO EXIT THE FREEWAY IMMEDIATELY. THIS COULD HAVE RESULTED IN AN ACCIDENT. AFTER LETTING THE SYSTEM SIT FOR ABOUT 20-MINUTES I STARTED THE VEHICLE AND RESUMED MY TRAVEL. SAME ERROR MESSAGE AND LOSS OF PROPULSION HAPPENED AGAIN, AND THIS TIME I NAVIGATED THE HYBRID TO A FORD DEALER IN NJ. IT'S VERY SCARY TO BE TRAVELING AT HIGHWAY SPEEDS AND THEN A SECOND LATER NOT HAVE ANY PROPULSION. THIS COULD BE HANDLED MUCH BETTER AND I RECOMMEND THE ENGINE CONTINUE TO PERFORM SO THAT I CAN SAFELY EXIT THE FREEWAY WITH MORE TIME. *JS

ENGINE AND ENGINE COOLING PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2011-10-28
- Components: ENGINE AND ENGINE COOLING
- Summary: I OWN A 2007 MERCURY MARINER HYBRID AND I WAS TRAVELING FROM VIRGINIA WHERE I PREVIOUSLY LIVED TO NEW YORK FOR A JOB INTERVIEW. WHILE TRAVELING ON THE NEW JERSEY TURNPIKE AT A SPEED OF AROUND 73 MILES PER HOUR A LIGHT CAME ON IN MY VEHICLE THAT STATED "STOP VEHICLE SAFELY." I WAS TRAVELING IN THE FURTHEST LEFT HAND LANE OF 4 AT THE TIME AND WITHIN ABOUT 2 OR 3 SECONDS OF THIS LIGHT COMING ON I LOST GAS ENGINE POWER TO MY VEHICLE. I WAS HONESTLY SCARED FOR MY LIFE BECAUSE THE ONLY PORTION OF MY VEHICLE THAT WAS WORKING IS THE ELECTRIC ENGINE THAT ALLOWS THE VEHICLE TO GO AROUND 25 MILES PER HOUR. I WAS ABLE TO SAFELY PULL MY VEHICLE OFF OF THE ROAD WHILE NEARLY GETTING HIT BY 3 OR 4 CARS/TRACTOR TRAILERS. I CONTACTED FORD/MERCURY ROADSIDE ASSISTANCE AND THEY WERE GOING TO COME OUT, BUT THEM THE VEHICLE RAN FINE. ON MY RETURN TRIP THE VEHICLE DID THIS ANOTHER 3 OR 4 TIMES. IMMEDIATELY WHEN I GOT BACK TO VIRGINIA I TOOK IT TO BEACH FORD AND THEY FOUND THAT THE COOLANT PUMP FOR THE HYBRID SYSTEM HAD GONE BAD AND NEEDED TO BE REPLACED. I QUESTIONED WHY THE GAS ENGINE WOULD SHUT DONE AND BEACH FORD AND FORD CORPORATE BOTH TOLD ME THE SAME THING, THIS WAS A SAFETY PRECAUTION SET INTO THE VEHICLES COMPUTER. I EXPLAINED THAT THIS IS NOT SAFE AT ALL AND LOSING POWER AT HIGHWAY SPEEDS AND CAUSING ACCIDENTS IS NOT A SAFETY PRECAUTION AT ALL IT IS DANGEROUS. I DID NOT RECEIVE ANY FURTHER EXPLAINATIONS FROM FORD EXCEPT FOR THE SAME THING OVER AND OVER AGAIN. I HAVE A 15 MONTH OLD SON AND THIS IS NOT SAFE, I AM VERY CONCERNED ABOUT THIS HAPPENING AGAIN WITH HIM IN THE VEHICLE. I AM VERY SURPRISED THIS SAFETY PRECAUTION WOULD PASS GOVERNMENT STANDARDS. I AM LOOKING FOR YOU TO LOOK INTO THIS AND GET BACK TO ME BECAUSE FORD SHOULD NOT BE PRODUCING VEHICLES THAT CAN CAUSE ACCIDENTS BECAUSE OF A COOLANT PUMP GOING BAD. *TR

I really like my mariner so far. It has good power and is smooth, making it fun to drive at freeway speeds. The audio system sounds pretty good, depending on the quality of your CDs and MP3s. Although I'm not sure if it's an option or not, it would be nice to have an outside temperature gauge. Best of all, it gets 30 MPG even though I have a bit of a lead foot.
-
The ride can be a bit harsh, and the navigation system could use some improvement. Additionally, the steering wheel could be positioned higher for better comfort. It would be great if the AC could be automated with a thermostat, and it's worth noting that it only runs when the gas engine is working. Unfortunately, there is no outside temperature gauge. On the bright side, the car gets good gas mileage, although the fuel tank could be larger. Overall, the car has a good road feel.
-
I love this SUV! It handles really well and feels like a V6. The instrumentation is really cool and the navigation system is great.
-
I traded in my fully loaded 2002 Nissan Frontier 4WD for the Mariner. While my pickup averaged 17 mpg, the Mariner is supposed to get 29 mpg on the highway and 33 mpg in the city. While the 33 mpg in the city may be a bit ambitious, I have managed to achieve 28 mpg over two tanks of gas. It does require a light foot on the accelerator, but if you're really good, you can get the Mariner up to 30 mph before the gas engine kicks in. I absolutely love driving it and it's great to know that I'm not burning any gas while sitting at lights for minutes at a time. Trying to conserve fuel has made me more mindful of my driving habits and has allowed me to enjoy a more relaxed pace of travel.
-
Mariner is much nicer inside than Escape hybrid. I love the chrome accents and two-tone leather seats. The hybrid nav system is a very nice piece of technology.

The vehicle's Nav/radio system has some issues that need to be addressed. Despite being advertised as Satellite capable and MP3 compatible, it does not function as expected. Additionally, the Nav system is not user-friendly and lacks accuracy. These issues are disappointing, especially considering the $3700 price tag for this TECHIE Vehicle. However, Ford provided a solution by offering an aftermarket Satellite radio that was attached to the dash with Velcro. While the sound quality was not great, it was a helpful alternative. It's worth noting that the vehicle does not have auto headlamps or an outside temperature gauge. Overall, there is room for improvement in this vehicle's technology features.

The price was $33K, but I did manage to get 5 years of 0% financing. It's important to remember to change the oil, filters, and headlight bulbs periodically, but overall I've had no major issues in the 12 years that I've owned it, despite putting 96K miles on it.

I purchased this vehicle in 2007 and shortly after, I needed new floor mats. Unfortunately, I have had some issues with the navigation system overheating, even after replacing the parts. The CD changer also has some occasional malfunctions, so I tend to use it sparingly. Additionally, the seat heaters seem to turn on randomly and the keyless entry can be unreliable. I have had to take the vehicle to the shop multiple times for ABS issues, which I later found out were caused by the ABS sensor and tone ring not being able to handle winter weather. Interestingly, when I bring the vehicle in for these issues, I am often told that there is nothing wrong with it. My wife and I have both experienced these same issues.

I owned a Lincoln Aviator before this. However, there is no comparison. I must say that this car is cheaply built. The seats are uncomfortable with paper-thin leather, the sound system is poor, and you can hear the outside air through the windows. Additionally, it has a rough ride. Overall, it is just a cheap and uncomfortable car that was definitely not worth 30-some thousand dollars!

The steering characteristics of this automobile are currently disappointing and not suitable for highway driving. It requires constant attention to maintain a straight track, similar to a car with a poor caster setting. However, I am confident that there may be an adjustment that can be made to improve the steering. Unfortunately, mechanics in my area are currently unaware of any solutions.
