The Kia Sorento (Korean: 기아 쏘렌토, romanized: Gia Sorento) is a series of automobiles manufactured by the South Korean manufacturer Kia since 2002 through four generations. Initially a compact SUV built on a body-on-frame chassis, the second-generation Sorento transitioned to a larger car-based platform which placed it into the mid-size crossover SUV class, and has been developed alongside the Hyundai Santa Fe.

First generation (BL; 2002)

2002–2006

Debuting in February 2002, the first generation Sorento was a traditional truck-based body-on-frame SUV. All American Sorentos also came with dual front airbags and dual side-curtain airbags in the front and rear. An optional four-wheel drive system with low range received praise for adding to the vehicle's off-road ability.

It had two transmission options, a 5-speed manual or 4- and 5-speed automatic (pre-2005 models have a 4-speed automatic, whilst 2005 Sorentos came with a 5-speed tip-tronic style automatic). First generation Sorentos are equipped with a Hyundai-manufactured 3.5-liter 24-valve DOHC V6 engine producing 192 hp (143 kW) at 5500 rpm, and 217 lb⋅ft (294 N⋅m) of torque at 3,000 rpm. Common features of the first generation Sorento were 4-wheel disc brakes (standard on all models), optional anti-lock braking system (ABS), and a 21.1-gallon (79.9 litres) fuel tank.

There were two trim levels available for the Sorento: either the base LX or the up-level EX. Both models included an AM/FM stereo with a single-disc CD player and an eight-speaker audio system, dual front airbags and front and rear side-impact SRS airbags (side-impact front and rear SRS airbags for North American-market models ONLY), cloth seating surfaces, a power-adjustable front driver's seat, air conditioning, power door locks and windows, tinted windows, aluminum-alloy wheels, keyless entry, wood interior trim accents, a split-folding second-row rear bench seat, and monotone exterior paint as standard equipment. Features such as satellite radio (on later models), leather-trimmed seating surfaces, heated front seats, a ten-speaker premium audio system, cassette and CD players, an in-dash CD changer, power front bucket seats, seventeen-inch (17") aluminum-alloy wheels, a power sunroof, two-tone exterior paint, and a security system were available regardless of trim level choice.

Common 2008 Kia Sorento problems

The Kia Sorento, a mid-size crossover SUV, has been in production since 2003. While Kia has made significant improvements in the Sorento's design and reliability over the years, some model years have had more issues than others. One of the earlier model years, the 2008 Kia Sorento, has had its fair share of problems, primarily related to the engine and electrical systems.

One of the most common problems with the 2008 Kia Sorento is an engine compartment fire caused by an electrical short within the ABS Module. This issue can occur even when the vehicle is turned off, increasing the risk of injury. This problem is serious and should be addressed promptly if it occurs.

Another issue with the 2008 Kia Sorento is related to the engine. Some owners have reported engine failure, which can occur at an average of 62,000 miles. This problem can be costly to repair and may affect the overall reliability of the vehicle.

In addition to engine problems, the 2008 Kia Sorento has also had issues with the electrical system. Some owners have reported electrical problems, such as malfunctioning lights and other electrical components. These issues can be frustrating and may affect the overall functionality of the vehicle.

Despite these issues, the Kia Sorento has been praised for its robustness and reliability. Reports of problems with the Kia Sorento are few and far between, and many owners have had positive experiences with the vehicle. However, it is essential to be aware of the potential issues with the 2008 Kia Sorento, particularly those related to the engine and electrical systems, before purchasing a used model.

In summary, the 2008 Kia Sorento has had some issues related to the engine and electrical systems. While these problems are not widespread, they can be costly to repair and may affect the overall reliability of the vehicle. Potential buyers of a used 2008 Kia Sorento should be aware of these issues and consider having the vehicle inspected by a qualified mechanic before making a purchase.

ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,AIR BAGS,SERVICE BRAKES PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2022-05-15
  • VIN: KNDJD735785
  • Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,AIR BAGS,SERVICE BRAKES
  • Summary: I bought my sorento used and the airbag light is lit on the front dash in both where the guages are and under the stereo. It doesnt matter if someone is in the seat or not. I found that there was a recall years ago so when i called Kia they told me that my vehicle had been repaired and I told them it must not have been or the repair didnt work. They then told me the date of repair. Crazy thing is they were saying it had been repaired a year before the recall was announced. I said really. Knowing Kia aint gonna pay for a repair that hadnt been part of a recall yet. Now with the newest recall its saying the brakelights might not come on when applied. But with my Sorento the brakelights wont turn off. No matter what you do even when you take the key out and lock the doors, the brakelights remain on. Right when this started the ESC OFF light on the dash came on. The brakelights stayed on so much it apparently fried my battery. I got another battery and replaced the brakelight switch and started it up and it immediately wont idle correctly. It had idle fine before the brakelight issue.

AIR BAGS PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2019-01-23
  • VIN: KNDJD735685
  • Components: AIR BAGS
  • Summary: My 2008 kia Sorento has a faulty passenger air bag, or air bag sensor. The ‘passenger air bag off’ light has been on since I purchased this car from a dealership in January of 2019. This jeopardizes the safety of my passengers because if the sensor or software is faulty, the airbags won’t deploy when needed. The vehicle was inspected by an independent mechanic, but I plan to take it to a dealership as well, it is available to be inspected upon request. I have called kia consumer affairs twice because there was a recall for this same passenger airbag issue in Kia Sorentos manufactured from 2007-2009 (SC067), but the first time they told me there was nothing I could do because the VIN wasn’t listed as affected. The second time I called to get more information, they put me on hold and then hung up on me so I do not know how to progress when kia is refusing to address my concern. I have to drive on the highway frequently and I am very worried about having a faulty airbag system. Thank you for your time!

UNKNOWN OR OTHER PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2021-06-10
  • Fire: 1
  • VIN: KNDJC735785
  • Components: UNKNOWN OR OTHER
  • Summary: I pulled into my driveway and the car shut off and I heard a pop, never had an issue before this. Upon getting out I noticed smoke and asked my neighbor to help me open the hood. Upon opening the hood we noticed a fire in the passenger side of the engine and called 911. The entire car was engulfed in flames within minutes of me getting out of the vehicle, luckily I made it out but what if I had not? I am mentally traumatized along with my family especially my young child. The car is sitting in my driveway still and it is a daily reminder of what happened. There is a recall SC186 on Kia Sorento year 2007-2009 that I was never informed about. Something needs to be done or I will be making sure this is a case that is handled in the court system.

2008 Kia Sorento recalls

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) has issued 3 recalls for different components of the 2008 Kia Sorento.

2020-02-14
  • Manufacturer: Kia Motors America
  • Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM
  • Summary: Kia Motors America (Kia) is recalling certain 2006-2010 Sedona and 2007-2009 Sorento vehicles. Moisture may enter the Anti-lock Brake (ABS) Module and result in an electrical short.
  • Consequence: An electrical short within the ABS Module may cause an engine compartment fire, even when the vehicle is turned off, increasing the risk of an injury.
  • Remedy: Kia will notify owners, and dealers will install a relay in the main junction box to prevent power from being directed to the HECU when the vehicle's ignition switch is turned off, free of charge. The recall began June 5, 2020. Owners may contact Kia customer service at 1-800-333-4542. Kia's number for this recall is SC186.
2013-04-01
  • Manufacturer: Kia Motors Corporation
  • Components: EXTERIOR LIGHTING:BRAKE LIGHTS:SWITCH
  • Summary: Kia Motors Corporation (Kia) is recalling certain model year 2007-2010 Rondo, model year 2007-2011 Sedona, Sorento and Sportage, model year 2010-2011 Soul, model year 2008-2011 Optima, model year 2010 Forte, model year 2007-2009 Amanti, and model year 2009 Borrego vehicles. Originally, in April 2013, Kia recalled 623,658 model year 2007-2010 Rondo and Sportage, model year 2007-2011 Sorento, model year 2007 Sedona, model year 2010-2011 Soul, and model year 2011 Optima vehicles. In September 2013, Kia informed the agency that it was adding an additional 356,719 vehicles to this campaign. The total number of vehicles being recalled is now 980,377. In the affected vehicles, the stop lamp switch may malfunction. A malfunctioning stop lamp switch may cause the brake lights to not illuminate when the brake pedal is depressed or may cause an inability to deactivate the cruise control by depressing the brake pedal. Additionally, a malfunctioning stop lamp switch may also result in intermittent operation of the push-button start feature, affect the operation of the brake-transmission shift interlock feature preventing the shifter from being moved out of the PARK position and cause the Electronic Stability Control (ESC) malfunction light to illuminate.
  • Consequence: Failure to illuminate the stop lamps during braking or inability to disengage the cruise control could increase the risk of a crash. Additionally, when the ignition is in the 'ON' position, the transmission shifter may be able to be moved out of PARK without first applying the brake. This may lead to unintentional movement of the car which may increase the risk of a crash.
  • Remedy: Kia will send an interim notification to owners in May 2013. When parts are available, owners will receive a second notification and dealers will replace the stop lamp switch, free of charge. Owners may contact Kia at 1-800-333-4542. Kia's recall campaign number is SC098.
2011-09-07

THE VEHICLE'S OCCUPANT CLASSIFICATION SYSTEM (OCS), WHICH CLASSIFIES THE OCCUPANT IN THE FRONT PASSENGER SEAT, MAY MISCLASSIFY AN ADULT PASSENGER AS A CHILD OR CHILD SEAT AND IMPROPERLY TURN OFF THE PASSENGER SIDE AIR BAG. WHEN THE AIR BAG IS DEACTIVATED THE "PASSENGER AIR BAG OFF" LIGHT WILL ILLUMINATE ON THE CENTER INSTRUMENT PANEL.
  • Consequence: THE PASSENGER SIDE AIR BAG IS TURNED OFF WHEN THE OCS MISCLASSIFIES AN ADULT PASSENGER. WITH THE FRONT PASSENGER AIRBAG OFF, THE FRONT PASSENGER WILL NOT HAVE THE PROTECTION OF THE PASSENGER AIR BAGS IN SOME FRONTAL COLLISIONS, THUS INCREASING THE RISK OF OCCUPANT INJURY.
  • Remedy: KIA WILL UPDATE THE PROGRAMMING IN THE SORENTO OCS CONTROL MODULE AT NO CHARGE. THE RECALL REMEDY IS CURRENTLY AVAILABLE UNDER SERVICE CAMPAIGN SC076. OWNERS MAY CONTACT KIA CUSTOMER SERVICE AT 1-800-333-4542.

Negative 2008 Kia Sorento car reviews

The issue I have been experiencing with this vehicle is with the passenger seat airbag. Despite five trips to the dealership, the problem has not been resolved. According to them, the airbag is not functioning because my wife does not meet the weight requirement. However, I find it hard to believe as she weighs just over 100 pounds. Overall, I am disappointed with the vehicle and concerned about our safety.

I traded in my sedan because I wanted to sit higher due to blind spots. My mpg averages 21, especially if I keep my husband and teenage son out of it. Unfortunately, I am not at all pleased with the passenger seat sensor explanations. During my most recent trip, I was told that I do not weigh enough. At 140 pounds, I do not feel comfortable trusting the airbag system at all because of the sensor issue. Additionally, the transmission has already had to be serviced and the bulbs have already had to be replaced (both low beams -- in a 1-year-old vehicle -- and bulbs not released to be sold outside of the dealership at this time). It has been a major inconvenience. The sound system is also quite horrid. I will trade it as soon as I can without losing a fortune.

This car has had several issues that need to be addressed. The recurring transmission problem, passenger airbag sensor, air conditioning compressor, rear hatch, gas mileage, sound system, rear floorboard trim, air vents, headlights, and valve cover gasket all require attention. It is important to address these issues to ensure the car is functioning properly. Thank you for bringing these issues to our attention.

This is a great vehicle with all the bells and whistles, but if you're commuting like I do, 120 miles a day plus up to 20 in errands on lunch, it's not very fuel-efficient. I find myself filling up every other day and gas prices are on the rise. I traded in my 8-year-old Hyundai Elantra because I have 3 kids, 2 in car seats and a 12-year-old who didn't fit in the back. The KIA is better, but still a tight fit with 2 car seats and a third child. The space isn't as spacious as I hoped for. I'm trading it in this weekend for a 4-cylinder car because I can't afford the gas. I'm averaging 18.3 mpg which is good for this vehicle, but I didn't realize how quickly it's used up. If I could afford the gas, I would definitely keep the vehicle.

Traded in my much too tiny and wimpy Dodge Caliber last week for my black Sorento LX and so far I couldn't be happier. It's an absolute joy to drive! I actually look forward to my daily commute now, which is saying something. The acceleration is awesome, the ride is smooth and strong, and it handles like a dream. Driving has never been easier.

  2. Broderick Brekke 2024-10-11

Purchased this Sorento ex 4x4..to it for a 400 mile test drive and found it to handle well on highway-no unreasonable vibrations, handles well, good turning radius, good acceleration. The seating however, is quite hard. Perhap this can be an improvement for future. Good legroom for driver and passenger, the steering wheel could perhaps elevate higher. The wheel base should be longer to allow for greater back cargo storage. The seats do not fold down well wihout adjusting the headrests.

I'm glad to hear that you're okay after the car accident! It's great to know that the airbags deployed correctly and that you only sustained a few scratches. The car sounds like it has been super reliable during the time you've had it, and it's awesome that it was your first car. The handling on the car was great too! Thanks for sharing your experience.

I traded my sedan for the Sorento. It's been great for transporting my bikes and dogs, including my 75 lb. Greyhound, as well as commuting to work. I specifically wanted a vehicle that sat higher than a car and had plenty of cargo room, and the Sorento has delivered. I typically drive a combination of city and highway and get a decent 22.5 mpg. Unfortunately, I have experienced some trouble with the passenger airbag. My brother, who weighs 140 lb., has ridden with me and the airbag sensor screen has shown it's on, but then a few minutes later it's off, which is concerning. Additionally, there's a rattle on the driver's side that the dealership fixed, but it has since returned.

I got a great deal on my 2008 Kia Sorento with less than 90K miles when I bought it in June of 2018. While the door handles are not the best and can come off easily, I have only had to repair the alternator and brakes so far. The motor has a slight chain-like/rattle noise, which reminds me of a Hyundai, but it hasn't caused any issues. Although I miss some of the details of my previous car, a Nissan Armada, I appreciate the simplicity of this car. Some more up-to-date features would be helpful, but overall I am satisfied with my purchase.
