2009 Mazda Cx-9 problems

mazda logo

The Mazda CX-9 is a mid-size crossover SUV manufactured by Mazda in Japan since 2006 through two generations With three-row seating, it was Mazda's largest passenger vehicle until the arrival of the CX-90.

Despite being built in Japan at Mazda's Ujina #1 plant in Hiroshima Prefecture, the CX-9 was never offered in the Japanese domestic market. The shorter and narrower Mazda CX-8 was offered in Japan instead.

First generation (TB; 2006)

The first generation CX-9 was originally fitted with a 3.5 L Ford V6 engine, but, in 2008, the engine was changed to a 3.7 L unit producing 204 kW (274 hp) and 366 N⋅m (270 lb⋅ft) of torque. The updated engine was introduced in June 2007 and it was now built by Mazda themselves. This engine was coupled with a six speed automatic transmission. The first generation is based on the Ford CD3 platform that is shared with many Ford and Mazda models; the Ford Edge is its close mechanical sibling. It was launched at the 2006 New York International Auto Show.

Standard safety equipment included blind spot monitoring, backup camera, electronic stability control, traction control, roll stability control, front side impact airbags, and three row side curtain airbags.

Common 2009 Mazda Cx-9 problems

The 2009 Mazda CX-9, a seven-seater SUV, is known for its spaciousness, athletic performance, and quick acceleration

. However, like any vehicle, it has its share of common problems.

One of the most frequently reported issues is the P0451 Check Engine Light, which is often caused by a clogged fuel tank pressure sensor

. This issue tends to appear after the car has been rustproofed, but it is relatively inexpensive to fix as it involves replacing a cheap part.

Front-end repairs are also common in the CX-9. This includes issues with the front suspension, particularly the supports, which may wear out between 20,000 to 50,000 kilometers, causing a creaking or knocking sound

. The steering rack may also need repair or replacement after approximately 100,000 kilometers, and the steering wheel coating may wear out over time, leading to scratches on the silver decorative overlays

Another significant problem is the transfer case failure due to poor lubrication as a result of the oil deteriorating over time.

Additionally, the CX-9's ignition coils may fail, leading to rough idling, a check engine light, and the engine jerking or stuttering, especially when stopped at an idle

. This issue is more common in the six-cylinder model, which has six ignition coils.

Lastly, water damage to the Body Control Module (BCM) may occur, leading to various electrical issues in the vehicle

While these problems may seem daunting, it is essential to note that regular maintenance and inspections can help prevent or mitigate these issues. When purchasing a used Mazda CX-9, it is recommended to check for these common problems and ensure that the vehicle has been well-maintained.

SERVICE BRAKES PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2018-02-01
  • Components: SERVICE BRAKES
  • Summary: MAZDA CX9 BREAK BOOSTER DIAPHRAGM LEAKAGE. I RECENTLY PURCHASED A 2009 MAZDA CX9 THAT ALMOST GOT ME KILLED. I WAS DRIVING DOWN THE HIGHWAY WITH MY FAMILY IN THE CAR WHEN ALL OF A SUDDEN I HAD TO SLOW DOWN BECAUSE THE CAR AHEAD OF ME ABRUPTLY SLOWED DOWN. I PRESSED MY BREAKS TO SLOW DOWN AND IT FELT AS HARD AS A ROCK PROMPTING ME TO MAKE SHARP MANEUVER INTO THE OTHER LANE, THANKFULLY NO OTHER CARS WERE COMING ON THAT LANE. UPON MAKING HOME I WENT ON THE COMPUTER AND RESEARCH THE ISSUE. I FOUND OUT THAT THE PROBLEM IS DUE TO A MANUFACTURING DEFECTS WITH THE BREAK BOOSTERS IN THE CX9 AND MAZDA IS AWARE OF THE ISSUE. I TOOK THE CAR TO A MAZDA DEALERSHIP WHERE I WAS TOLD TO PAY $680 TO HAVE THE ISSUE FIXED BECAUSE I MISSED THE 2015 DEADLINE SET BY MAZDA TO HAVE THE BREAK BOOSTER FIXED. I WAS SO UPSET, I CALLED MAZDA USA WHERE I WAS TOLD THAT THERE IS NOTHING THEY CAN DO ABOUT THE ISSUE. TO ROB SALT IN THE WOUND THE LADY I SPOKE TO ON THE PHONE ADVISED MY TO MAKE SURE THAT I SCHEDULE AN APPOINTMENT WITH THE LOCAL MAZDA DEALERSHIP FOR THE OPEN RECALL ON THE AIRBAGS ISSUE. (WHICH I INTERPRETED AS "IF YOUR BREAKS FAIL AND YOU DIE, THE AIRBAG WILL PROTECT FACE SHOULD IN CASE YOUR FAMILY WANTS TO DO AN OPEN CASKET AT YOUR FUNERAL"). I BELIEVE IT IS UNFAIR FOR MAZDA TO AVOID FIXING A KNOWN DEFECTS IN THE MOST IMPORTANT SAFETY SYSTEM IN A CAR ( THE BREAKS) BY PASSING IT OFF AS A WARRANTY PROGRAM. I AM GLAD TO BE ALIVE TO FILE THIS COMPLAINT. PLEASE THINK ABOUT PEOPLES SAFETY AND NOT THE INTEREST OF THE MANUFACTURERS AND DO THE RIGHT THING.

  • Remedy: Owners are advised not to drive their vehicles until the remedy is performed. Mazda will notify owners, and dealers will replace the passenger frontal air bag inflator with an alternate inflator, free of charge. The recall began on August 30, 2017. Owners may contact Mazda customer service at 1-800-222-5500. Mazda's number for this recall is 1317F. Note: This recall supersedes recall 16V356 and all vehicles that were not remedied under that campaign are now covered by this one.

So far so good! It's only been a month, but I'm really happy with my decision not to get the Highlander. The Mazda feels more agile and less truck-like to me. I haven't experienced any buyer's remorse yet, and I'm hopeful that the reliability will be just as good as Toyota and Honda.

After driving 5500 miles, I must say that the CX-9 has been an excellent choice for my family. Even the third row seats are comfortable for short trips. The acceleration and handling of this 7 passenger SUV are outstanding. The interior design is on par with that of Acura and Audi. I test drove the Acura MDX, Honda Pilot, and Toyota Highlander, and while they were all nice, the Mazda stood out for its combination of price, design, size, and performance. In short, I enjoy driving it and my wife loves the design and space it provides for our children.

Congratulations on your growing family! We understand the need for a larger vehicle and it sounds like you made a great choice with the CX-9 GT AWD. Its spacious interior, great handling, and stylish exterior make it a perfect fit for your family's needs. We're glad to hear that you're enjoying the comfortable ride and the fun driving experience. Plus, it's always a bonus to have a vehicle that looks as good as it performs. Thank you for sharing your positive experience with us!

If you're on a budget, the Acura MDX is a great option that offers luxury-level features and utility at an affordable price. While the fuel economy may not be the most impressive in its class, it's still a great choice. I can honestly say that this large CUV is pretty fun to drive and easily comparable to my 05 Murano, even though it's bigger.

  5. Bertrand Waelchi 2024-09-28

Between the 09 Honda Pilot and the CX9, I ultimately chose the CX9 due to its price and features. It's been a joy to drive - smooth, comfortable, and quiet. The brakes are really nice, and even after 4 months without cleaning, there's minimal brake dust. So far, I haven't had any problems. I previously owned a Durango, so the CX9 sits a bit lower, but it's still a great choice.
