Oldsmobile Aurora 1995 problems
The Oldsmobile Aurora is a luxury sedan, manufactured and marketed by General Motors from 1994 until 2003 over two generations — sharing platforms with Buick Riviera and using the Cadillac-derived G platform. At the time of production, the Aurora was the flagship vehicle in the Oldsmobile lineup. It originated as the 1989 Oldsmobile tube car concept.
The Aurora replaced the Toronado coupe and eventually the Oldsmobile 98, LSS and Regency in the Oldsmobile range — using V8 and V6 engines. It was equipped with a four-speed automatic transmission.
Origins
Early design work on what would become the Aurora began as early as the late 1980s with the 1989 Oldsmobile Tube Car engineering concept, designed by Bud Chandler. In addition to the overall similar shape, the Tube Car featured many detailed elements that were later found on the production automobile, including a full-width taillamp, wraparound rear windshield, and frameless windows. Unlike the eventual production car, the Tube Car used a pillarless hardtop design with suicide doors. The final production design was signed off on in July 1989, originally set for a 1992 start of production.
By the Aurora's introduction, Oldsmobile sales had fallen from a record high of 1,066,122 in 1985 to 402,936 in 1993; rumors of the division's demise were rampant, which GM at the time firmly denied. Competition from Acura, Infiniti and Lexus offered similar products that benefited from superior durability and reliability reputations. GM developed the Aurora to rejuvenate Oldsmobile as a result. The Aurora bore no Oldsmobile badging save for the radio-CD-cassette deck and engine cover (during focus group testing, potential customers had been repelled when they learned the Aurora was in truth an Oldsmobile). At one point, then-division head John Rock (who had recently arrived from the GMC division) proposed using the Aurora name to replace the Oldsmobile brand entirely and offer cars in a similar fashion to GM's nascent Saturn division (a plan ultimately nixed by the GM higher-ups, though for a period Saturn's no-haggle pricing was implemented). Instead, the Aurora used a stylized A emblem, foreshadowing a similar restyling of Oldsmobile's corporate "rocket" emblem for 1997.
One bizarre footnote of development was a 1993 incident where a prototype Aurora, driven by freelance car reviewer Tim Dunne, was nearly totaled after a four-foot log fell from a Michigan Department of Natural Resources truck (Dunne was able to maneuver the Aurora so much that only the right front wheel was struck); this subsequently led then-governor John Engler to purchase an Aurora (Engler having been a life-long Oldsmobile customer).
Oldsmobile subsequently borrowed Aurora styling cues for its Intrigue and compact Alero models.

Common Oldsmobile Aurora 1995 problems
The Oldsmobile Aurora, produced between 1995 and 1999, is known for several common problems that can affect its performance and reliability. Here are the top four issues based on owner complaints and search results:
- Engine Control Module (ECM) Failure: Seven people have reported this issue, which can lead to various engine problems and require a replacement of the ECM.
- Electrical Issues: Electrical problems are common in the Oldsmobile Aurora, often caused by a primary vehicle ground on the passenger fender well that is exposed to salt, dirt, and water, leading to corrosion and consequent electrical issues . Many owners have added a new ground from the engine block to the shock Tower to solve these issues.
- Weather Stripping: The weather stripping on the Oldsmobile Aurora can become brittle and crack over time, especially since the car is almost 30 years old now. This can cause water leaks inside the vehicle and require a custom-made solution, which can be quite expensive .
These common problems with the Oldsmobile Aurora 1995 can significantly affect the car's performance and reliability, requiring costly repairs and maintenance. It is essential to address these issues promptly to ensure the car's longevity and safe operation.

FUEL SYSTEM, GASOLINE PROBLEM

- VIN: 1G3GR62C8S4
- Components: FUEL SYSTEM, GASOLINE
- Summary: RE: NHTSA:04V110000 - 1995 OLDSMOBILE AURORA I HAVE HAD A FUEL RAIL FAILURE IN THIS VEHICLE AND GM STATES THAT THE RECALL NOTICE ONLY APPLIES TO 1996-1997 VEHICLES. DOES THIS MEAN THAT BECAUSE THIS PROBLEM STARTED AND WAS OBSERVED IN THE 1995 MODELS, THAT THOSE OF US WITH THE VEHICLES THAT THE PROBLEM WAS INITIALLY OBSERVED IN CAN JUST PLAIN GO TO HELL AND SUFFER THE LOSS OF A VEHICLE OR WORSE STILL BE CONSUMED IN A FIRE STARTED BY THIS DEFECT AND BE POLITELY TOLD, "SORRY, THIS ONLY APPLIES TO THE VEHICLES SENT A RECALL NOTICE". I BELIEVE THAT YOUR RECALL ID 04V110000 SHOULD APPLY TO ALL VEHICLES AFFECTED, NOT JUST THOSE GM HAS SENT NOTICES. IT WAS SENT TO 1995 CADILLAC OWNERS WHICH HAS THE SAME ENGINE AS THE 1995 AURORA, THE AURORA IS 4.0 LITRE AND THE CADILLAC 4.6 LITRES - IDENTICAL ENGINES BUT A SMALLER DISPLACEMENT. SAME CONFIGURATION AND FUEL RAIL COMPONENTS. I WAS INDEED VERY FORTUNATE THAT NEITHER A FIRE OR OTHER SERIOUS EVENT HAPPENED AND ONLY WISH THAT GM WOULD AT LEAST ACKNOWLEDGE THE FACT THAT THIS FAILURE WAS THE RESULT OF THE FAILURE OF THE PART INVOLVED IN THE FOLLOWING ATTACHMENT, AND BE COMPENSATED FOR THE REPAIR OF SAID COMPONENT. *TR

- VIN: 1G3GR62CXS4
- Components: SERVICE BRAKES, HYDRAULIC
- Summary: THIS IS A 1995 OLDSMOBILE AURORA. I AM THE ORIGINAL OWNER. THE CAR HAS LESS THAN 70K MILES, HAS BEEN GARAGED AND HAS NOT BEEN IN ANY ACCIDENTS. AFTER DRIVING IN WINTER STORMS THE CAR WAS ALWAYS WASHED UNDER THE CHASSIS IN THE CAR WASH TO REMOVE SALT. ON 10/5/2006, AS I WAS PULLING OUT OF THE GARAGE, THE BRAKE PEDAL FELT TOTALLY SOFT AND THE CAR STOPPED WITH DIFFICULTY AFTER PUMPING THE BRAKES MANY TIMES, ETC. OUR GARAGE HAS A HIGH SLOPE INTO THE STREET. I PULLED THE CAR SLOWLY BACK INTO THE GARAGE AND OBSERVED BRAKE FLUID ON MY DRIVEWAY. I RAISED THE CAR ON JACKS AND I INSPECTED THE UNDERBODY. THE BRAKE FLUID LINES GOING TOWARDS THE BACK WHEELS ARE HEAVILY CORRODED AND A SPOT WAS LEAKING HEAVILY. I HAVE OWNED SEVERAL CARS IN THE PAST AND KEPT THEM FOR MANY YEARS AND HIGH MILEAGE BUT I NEVER FACED SUCH A SERIOUS SAFETY ISSUE. IMAGINE IF I WAS DRIVING ON THE HIGHWAY, AT 65 MILES/HOUR!*JB
STEERING,ENGINE AND ENGINE COOLING PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 1999-05-07
- VIN: 1G3GR62C2S4
- Components: STEERING,ENGINE AND ENGINE COOLING
- Summary: 1995 OLDSMOBILE AURORA, GM'S REAL WINNER HERE!!! WHERE DO I START? WE HAVE BEEN DEALING WITH OVER HEATING PROBLEMS, AND HAVE CHANGED WATER PUMPS, RADIATOR, RADIATOR FLUSHES, THERMOSTATS, A HANDFUL OF ALTERNATORS, TWICE THE A/C SEIZED, MAJOR VIBRATION AT HIGH SPEEDS AND STOPPING, CAUSED? OVER HEATED DISK BRAKES! ITS A REALLY NICE CAR; WE LOVE IT, BUT JUST CAN'T SEE THE END TO THIS FORESEEING WASTE OF CASH. OUR FAMILY MEMBERS HAVE ALL POUND THIS CAR AROUND, CAN'T BEAR GIVING IT UP, ESPECIALLY AFTER INVESTING SO MUCH. SHIFTING IN REVERSE CAN HAVE YOU SLAPPING IT IN DRIVE SEEING THE CHIROPRACTOR FROM THE SUDDEN JOLT. PROBLEMS WITH STEERING WHEEL, IS LOOSE AS A GOOSE, LEAKING FLUIDS FROM UNKNOWN PLACES THAT SEEM TO DISAPPEAR WHEN GETTING THEM SERVICED? ENGINE MOUNTS IN NEED OF A 2ND REPLACEMENT OVERHEATING IS AN ERRATIC PROBLEM, ALONG WITH THE IRREGULAR IDLES. THESE ISSUES ARE ALL STEMMED FROM THE REALLY BAD DESIGN PLANS, GIVING US THESE PROBLEMS THAT NEVER REALLY GET FIXED. THE CAUSE, MAJOR INTERNAL OVERHEATING! PROMOTING MASSIVE MELT DOWN ON OUR PRECIOUS BABY NORTHSTAR MAKES ONE EXPENSIVE ALUMINUM PAPER WEIGHT. NO MECHANIC SHOP WILL FIX OUR ENGINES, WHY? LIABILITY, THE BAD DESIGN HAS PROVEN THIS (IT DOES NOT WORK!). THE POOR DESIGN WAS EVIDENT TO GM WAY BEFORE THE FACTORY STARTED THROWING THEM TOGETHER. THEY JUST ADDED BANDAIDS ON THE MOST CRUCIAL ASPECT THEY NEEDED FURTHER DEVELOPMENT; THESE LOW ATTRIBUTES HAVE LEFT US SHORT CHANGED HOLDING A BAG OF SAFETY AND FINANCIAL BURDENS. TAKE A LOOK AT THIS NHTSA ODI NUMBERS; 8010002,10003769,10028708,1005387, 10057594,10063987,10069013,10069679,10070352,10071397,10094331, 10094992,10101048,10120403,10121459. THIS IS JUST A FRACTION OF THE PROBLEMS, THAT??S WHY A MECHANIC WILL NOT TOUCH YOUR ENGINE, BUT WILL ONLY EXCHANGE FOR A BRAND NEW ONE COST OF AROUND $8,000.00, AND OLDSMOBILE, WELL AS YOU KNOW. BAILING OUT. THANKS GM FOR THE NICE KICK IN THE PANTS. *JB

POWER TRAIN PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2005-04-18

- Summary: I WAS DRIVING HOME ON THE HIGHWAY DOING ABOUT 50-55 AND THE TRANSMISSION JUST WENT INTO 2ND GEAR SO I HAD TO DRIVE 20 MILES AT ABOUT 35 MPH. LUCKILY THERE WAS NO ONE AROUND SO THERE WAS NO ACCIDENT. AT THIS POINT IN TIME I HAVEN'T DONE ANYTHING TO FIX IT EXCEPT TO HAVE THE CODES READ BY A GM DEALER AND THEY DIDN'T KNOW WHAT WAS WRONG. I HAVE FOUND OUT THAT THE SHIFT SOLENOIDS ARE BAD DUE TO A FAILURE IN THE PLASTIC BRACKET THAT HOLDS THEM IN PLACE. *JB

GAVE HER THE INFORMATION FROM MY RECALL NOTICE AND THE SHOTTENKIRK INVOICE. SHE RESPONDED WITH - THIS AUTOMOBILE WAS NEVER UNDER ANY RECALL NOR DOES IT HAVE ANY "OPEN" RECALLS. SHE REPLIED THAT I MUST HAVE GOTTEN A HOLD OF SOMEONE ELSE'S RECALL NOTICE OR IN SOME OTHER MANNER ATTAINED SUCH A DOCUMENT. THE GM NOTICE HAD MY VIN#, SHOTTENKIRK HAD DONE THE INSPECTION. SHE STATED THAT SHE HAD CONTACTED BRENT AT SHOTTENKIRK, IF THEY HAD DONE THE INSPECTION IT WAS OUT OF COURTESY OR BY MISTAKE. I HAVE ALL ORIGINAL DOCUMENTATION FROM GM AND SHOTTENKIRK. WHY HAS THE GM REPRESENTATIVE INFORMED ME THAT THIS VEHICLE WAS NOT PART OF THIS CAMPAIGN AND INFERRED THAT I HAD SOMEHOW "MANUFACTURED" THE RECALL PAPERWORK. WHY DOES GM RECORDS INDICATE NO "OPEN" RECALLS? ARE RECALLS CLOSED AFTER AN INSPECTION IS FILED OR ONLY AFTER THE WORK IS COMPLETED? I WOULD LIKE TO KNOW WHO REIMBURSED SHOTTENKIRK FOR THE INSPECTION FEE, SINCE ACCORDING TO GM & SHOTTENKIRK THIS VEHICLE WAS NOT PART OF ANY RECALL. I CONTACTED THE NHTSA (MARTINA) AND VERIFIED THAT THIS VEHICLE IS INCLUDED IN CAMPAIGN#04V110000. I WOULD LIKE TO MAKE SURE THAT THE OLDSMOBILE DEALER HAS NOT FALSELY IDENTIFIED THIS AUTOMOBILE AS BEING REPAIRED UNDER THIS RECALL. AT THIS TIME I REQUEST THAT I BE REIMBURSED MY REPAIRS OF $195.93 AND GET MY CAR REPAIRED TO COMPLY WITH RECALL CAMPAIGN #04V110000 GM#04014B AT NO ADDITIONAL CHARGE. *JB

Oldsmobile Aurora 1995 recalls
The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) has issued 2 recalls for different components of the Oldsmobile Aurora 1995.
- Manufacturer: GENERAL MOTORS CORP.
- Components: FUEL SYSTEM, GASOLINE:DELIVERY:HOSES, LINES/PIPING, AND FITTINGS
- Summary: SOME PASSENGER VEHICLES EQUIPPED WITH 4.0L V8 ENGINES HAVE A CONDITION IN WHICH THE NYLON TUBING USED IN THE FUEL RAIL CONSTRUCTION MAY DEGRADE AND CRACK. ADDITIONALLY, THE 1995 MODEL YEAR USES A UNIQUE UNDERHOOD FUEL RETURN LINE THAT MAY CRACK. CRACKING OF THE FUEL RAIL OR RETURN LINE TUBING CAN RESULT IN A FUEL LEAK INTO THE ENGINE COMPARTMENT.
- Consequence: FUEL LEAKAGE, IN THE PRESENCE OF AN IGNITION SOURCE, COULD RESULT IN A FIRE.
- Remedy: DEALERS WILL INSPECT AND, IF NECESSARY, REPLACE THE ENGINE FUEL RAIL WITH A NEW STAINLESS STEEL FUEL RAIL. DEALERS WILL ALSO INSTALL A REVISED CHASSIS FUEL RETURN LINE. THE RECALL BEGAN ON JUNE 2, 2004, FOR 1996-1997 OLDSMOBILE AURORA VEHICLES. OWNERS OF 1995 CADILLACS AND 1996-1997 OLDSMOBILE AURORA WERE SENT LETTERS ON AUGUST 6, 2004. ADDITIONAL LETTERS TO OWNERS WILL BE FORTHCOMING. OWNERS SHOULD CONTACT OLDSMOBILE AT 1-800-630-6537.
- Manufacturer: GENERAL MOTORS CORP.
- Components: SEAT BELTS:FRONT:WEBBING
- Summary: VEHICLE DESCRIPTION: PASSENGER VEHICLES. THE REAR SHOULDER BELT(S) DO NOT RETRACT. A RETAINER COULD SEPARATE FROM A REAR SEAT SHOULDER BELT RETRACTOR WHICH RESULTS IN THE RETRACTOR RETURN SPRING BECOMING DISENGAGED.
- Consequence: IN A CRASH, AN OCCUPANT MAY RECEIVE MORE SEVERE INJURIES IF THERE IS EXCESSIVE SLACK IN THE SHOULDER BELT.
- Remedy: DEALERS WILL INSPECT BOTH REAR SHOULDER BELT RETRACTORS FOR CORRECT FUNCTION AND INSTALL A SPRING COVER RETAINING STRAP TO EACH RETRACTOR. IF A RETRACTOR DOES NOT FUNCTION CORRECTLY, IT WILL BE REPLACED.

The original Aurora was/still is a dream car. It has very clean styling, is comfortable, and great to drive. I would buy another in a flash if they still made them. Unfortunately, I don't count the remodeled Aurora as a real Aurora. Oldsmobile should have luxuried up rather than cheaping down. The second version wasn't worth considering. Initially, there were some new model problems, but they were covered by warranty. Now, the car just drives and drives... wonderfully.
-
Now at 117,00+ miles, I'm happy to report that there has been no oil loss or leaks, and no engine or transmission problems. We did have to replace the A/C compressor, but other than that, everything has been running smoothly.
-
The car was purchased used two years ago and unfortunately, it has required several repairs since then. Despite having to replace the head gasket, fuel pump, solenoids, sensors, and flushing the transmission, the car now has a cracked block. The cost of repair is estimated to be over $4,500 for a used engine with replacement, while a new engine alone costs $5,000. Although the repairs are expensive, I am confident that I will find a solution to this problem. While I loved this car, I understand that repairs are a necessary part of car ownership. The comfort of your Oldsmobile Aurora on trips and around town is great. It gets outstanding mileage and looks new and not 10 years old! Its safety features, especially with children, are a plus, as is the traction on snowy roads. The room in the trunk is fabulous.

I've had this car since 51000 miles, and it now has over 200,000 miles. I still love the car and haven't driven another one that comes close to the Aurora. I've never had any major mechanical issues. I've always used synthetic oil and premium fuels. I would purchase another Aurora, just like the one I own, any day.

The air conditioning computer controller has been replaced twice for a total of $937, but it still blows weak air. Additionally, the electronic ignition had to be replaced for $320 due to a lack of acceleration. The gasket around the oil pan is also leaking, and I was informed that the engine would need to be overhauled to fix it, which would cost $4300. I have already replaced the shocks since the original ones were leaking, but I was surprised to find that the replacements were only half the diameter of the originals. The car has only 47,000 miles on it, yet it is already on its third set of tires, which are rated for 60,000 miles.

In Consumer Reports, this car receives some of the worst ratings in every category except exhaust. My experience with this model vehicle certainly supports that. I had to replace the air conditioning system, radiator, water pump, computer, and fix numerous other problems. These issues all occurred before GM's claim of 100,000 miles before the first tune-up. However, I have since switched to a reliable Japanese car.

Although this car has had all scheduled maintenance, it has required several repairs such as the air conditioning, water pump, brakes, radiator, and CD player. Currently, there are some computer and electrical issues tied to the engine and transmission that mechanics are having trouble diagnosing. However, I am confident that these issues will be resolved soon. While I wish I had researched the car before purchasing, I am still optimistic about its future performance.
