2001 Dodge Dodge truck problems
The Ram pickup (marketed as the Dodge Ram until 2010) is a full-size pickup truck manufactured by Stellantis North America (formerly Chrysler Group LLC and FCA US LLC) and marketed from 2010 onwards under the Ram Trucks brand. The current fifth-generation Ram debuted at the 2018 North American International Auto Show in Detroit, Michigan, in January of that year.
Previously, Ram was part of the Dodge line of light trucks. The name Ram was first used in 1981 model year Dodge Trucks in October 1980, following the retiring and rebadging of the Dodge D series pickup trucks as well as B-series vans, though the company had used a ram's-head hood ornament on some trucks as early as 1933.
Ram trucks have been named Motor Trend magazine's Truck of the Year eight times; the second-generation Ram won the award in 1994, the third-generation Ram heavy-duty won the award in 2003, the fourth-generation Ram Heavy Duty won in 2010 and the fourth-generation Ram 1500 won in 2013 and 2014, and the current fifth-generation Ram pickup became the first truck in history to win the award three times, winning in 2019, 2020, and 2021.

- Components: AIR BAGS,STRUCTURE
- Summary: I HAVE A 2001 DODGE RAM 1500 SLT QUAD CAB THAT WAS PURCHASED USED IN 2002. WHEN I PURCHASED THE TRUCK THERE WERE NO PROBLEMS. A COUPLE MONTHS AFTER I NOTICED A CRACK STARTING IN THE DASH THAT ENDED UP BEING THE FIST OF MANY HOLES THAT FORMED IN THE DASH. AFTER DOING SOME SEARCHING I FOUND THAT I WAS NOT THE ONLY ONE WITH THIS PROBLEM. ALMOST EVERYONE I TALKED TO IN TOWN AND ACROSS THE US, VIA THE INTERNET, WERE EXPERIENCING THE SAME PROBLEM I HAD. SOME WERE VERY SUBTLE WHILE OTHERS WERE TO THE POINT OF BEING DANGEROUS. MINE AT THE MOMENT IS PURELY COSMETIC AND HAS NOT INTERFERED WITH ANY OF THE ELECTRICAL OR HEATING AND COOLING SYSTEMS THAT RESIDE UNDER/BEHIND THE DASH. AS THE YEARS HAVE GONE ON THE PROBLEM HAS GOTTEN WORSE. IT WASN'T TILL JUST RECENTLY THAT I RAN ACROSS THIS AND A COUPLE OTHER SITES WHERE I COULD DOCUMENT THIS PROBLEM AND FEEL THAT SOMETHING MAY ACTUALLY GET DONE. I AM CONCERNED THAT I MAY BECOME A VICTIM OF COMMON WIRING PROBLEMS THAT OTHERS HAVE EXPERIENCED. SOME COMPLAINANTS HAD LOST ALL USE OF THEIR LIGHTING SYSTEMS. I AM PERSONALLY AM UNEASY THAT IF I WERE IN AN ACCIDENT THAT I OR MY PASSENGERS (WIFE AND KIDS) MY BE PELTED WITH SHRAPNEL FORM THIS DEFECTIVE DASH. *TR

- VIN: 3B7HC13Z61M
- Components: STRUCTURE
- Summary: I AM AN OWNER OF A 2001 DODGE RAM 1500 TRUCK. I TOO HAVE ISSUES WITH THE DASHBOARD CRACKING. THERE ARE SEVERAL CRACKS NOW IN THE DASHBOARD. I AM NOT THE ORIGINAL OWNER OF THE VEHICLE, BUT WHAT I FIRST NOTICED SHORTLY AFTER MY PURCHASE IN 2006 WAS A SMALL AREA ON THE DASHBOARD WHERE IT MET THE WINDSHIELD ON THE PASSENGER SIDE OF THE VEHICLE. IN THIS AREA, A SMALL PIECE ACTUALLY BROKE OUT. THERE WAS A CRACK RUNNING FROM THE FRONT TO THE BACK OF THE DASHBOARD IN THIS AREA. I DIDN'T THINK ANYTHING OF IT AS IT WAS A USED VEHICLE. HOWEVER, THERE WERE SEVERAL FRONT TO BACK CRACKS ON THE ENTIRE DASHBOARD AND THE PLASTIC THAT GOES AROUND THE LENS THAT COVERS ALL THE GAUGES. THE MOST CONCERNING TO ME WAS THE ONE THAT RAN FROM THE PASSENGER FRONT CORNER ACROSS THE PORTION THAT HAD THE SCREWS IN IT THAT SECURED IT. THE PLASTIC THAT SURROUNDED 2 OF THE SCREW HOLES WAS COMPLETELY CRACKED AROUND THE SCREW AREA. THE WINDOWS WERE DARK TINTED, AND I USED A SUN SHADE ON THE WINDSHIELD WHEN THE VEHICLE I WAS PARKED, BUT STILL MORE CRACKS HAVE SURFACED. AFTER THE RECENT PUBLICITY SURROUNDING THESE VEHICLES, I TOO AM NERVOUS ABOUT WHAT MAY HAPPEN.*AK

POWER TRAIN PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2005-11-11
- VIN: 1B4HR28N01F
- Components: POWER TRAIN
- Summary: IN AUG OF 2004 I PURCHASED A 2001 DODGE DURANGO SLT FROM PIEDMONT CHRYSLER DODGE HERE IN ANDERSON SC. THIS VEHICLE NOW HAS 45000 MILES ON IT. AFTER HAVING PROBLEMS WITH THE TRANSMISSION, I TOOK IT TO A AAMCO, AS THIS WAS THE CLOSEST TO WHERE I WAS LOCATED AND THE VEHICLE WAS LOCKED IN 2ND GEAR. THEY DID A DIAGNOSTIC TEST ON IT AND TOLD ME THAT THE TRANSMISSION WOULD HAVE TO BE REBUILT AS THEY THOUGHT THE 3RD GEAR WAS OUT. I CALLED THE DEALERSHIP ON FRIDAY, NOVEMBER 11, 2005 AND MADE AN APED TO BRING THE CAR TO THEM ON MONDAY 14TH. THE SERVICE MANAGER JIM CALLED ME AND TOLD ME THAT THEY HAD LOOKED AND DROVE MY VEHICLE AND I DID HAVE PROBLEMS WITH THE TRANSMISSION (IT IS AN AUTOMATIC TRANSMISSION ) AND THEY WERE GOING TO ASK DAIMLERCHRYSLER TO ASSIST WITH THE COSTS DUE TO THE LOW MILES ON THE VEHICLE BUT IN ORDER FOR THEM TO DIAGNOSE IT THEY HAD TO "DROP THE PAN" WHICH WOULD COST ME $85. THIS MORNING, TUESDAY NOVEMBER 15TH JIM CALLED ME AND TOLD ME THAT THEY DROPPED THE PAN AND HAD FOUND THAT BOLTS IN THE TRANSMISSION HAD COME LOOSE AND HAD ACTUALLY FELL INTO THE CLUTCHES. THIS IS A $2800 REPAIR! I THEN ASK THEM IF THERE WAS ANY WAY THAT THIS COULD HAVE DUE TO MY FAULT? HE SAID ABSOLUTELY NOT THAT THIS WAS A MAJOR DEFECT IN THIS VEHICLE. HE ADVISED ME TO CALL DAIMLERCHRYSLER AND ASK THEM FOR ASSISTANCE WHICH I DID. I EVEN CONFERENCED HIM IN SO HE COULD TELL THEM THE "TECHNICAL" ISSUES INVOLVED. BOB CLARK WAS THE REP WE TALKED TO AND HE WAS VERY RUDE EVEN TO THE POINT TO TELL ME THAT DUE TO THE MILEAGE BEING OVER 36000 MILES AND THAT I WAS THE SECOND OWNER OF THIS VEHICLE THAT I SHOULD HAVE PURCHASED AN EXTENDED SERVICE AGREEMENT! I THEN ASK TO SPEAK TO SOMEONE WITH HIGHER AUTHORITY AS JIM AND I WERE SHOCKED TO HIS RUDENESS AND INABILITY TO HELP US. I THEN ASKED FOR HIS CORPORATE OFFICE WHICH HE REFUSED TO GIVE ME. AFTER DOING RESEARCH ON DAIMLERCHRYSLER, IN FACT WHILE DOING THIS RESEARCH, I FOUND THAT I WAS NOT THE ONLY PERSON HAVING PROBLEMS WITH THEM. *NM
ENGINE AND ENGINE COOLING PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2005-10-29
- Components: ENGINE AND ENGINE COOLING
- Summary: WE WERE DRIVING DOWN THE INTERSTATE IN OUR 2001 DODGE DURANGO SPORT AND OUR CHECK GAUGES LIGHT CAME ON AND OUR OIL PRESSURE DROPPED TO ZERO. IT DID THIS 3 TIMES OVER A 2 MINUTE PERIOD. WE PULLED OVER AT THE NEAREST GAS STATION AND CHECKED THE OIL, AS WE HAD JUST HAD IT CHANGED A WEEK AGO. WE HAD OIL AND IT THERE WERE NO SHAVINGS IN IT. WE SAT THERE FOR A WHILE AND THEN RESTARTED THE DURANGO THINKING IT WAS A BAD SENSOR. ABOUT 10 MINUTES LATER, WE STARTED HEARING A KNOCKING NOISE AND A FOUL SMELL. WE IMMEDIATELY PULLED OVER AND HAD THE DURANGO TOWED BACK TO OUR HOUSE. WHEN WE GOT HOME WE CHANGED THE OIL AND FILTER JUST TO BE SURE IT WASN'T A BAD FILTER. UPON INSPECTION, WE FOUND SLUDGE IN OUR OIL. WE GOT ON THE WEB AND FOUND OUT SEVERAL DURANGO OWNERS HAVE HAD THIS SAME PROBLEM AND THAT DODGE HAS NOT HAD ANY RECALLS FOR THIS. THE DURANGO IS OUR MAIN FAMILY VEHICLE FOR OUR FAMILY OF 5 WHICH INCLUDES 2 INFANTS. THIS IS THE THIRD YEAR WE HAVE OWNED THE DURANGO AND IT HAS BEEN IN THE SHOP AT LEST 2 TIMES EVERY YEAR. WE ARE TRYING TO COME UP WITH THE MONEY TO EITHER REPLACE THE OIL PUMP OR THE ENGINE IF NEEDED. *NM

THE MOTOR OF IT HAD FROZE UP AND WAS PUSHING FLUID BACK UP TO THE CAP AND WAS RUNNING OUT.*JB

I SENT THE VEHICLE TO SPEEDWAY DODGE OF LANSING, KANSAS AND THEY REPAIRED THE BALL JOINTS, BUT THEY THEN NOTIFIED ME OF A NEW PROBLEM SAYING I NEED TO HAVE THE RACK AND PINION ASSEMBLY REPLACED BECAUSE IF I DON'T I COULD LOSE MY STEERING! IT WOULD COST ME OVER $900.00 DOLLARS, WELL THE PROBLEM I HAVE WITH THAT; IS AFTER I WENT HOME AND DID SOME RESEARCH ON THE INTERNET I DISCOVERED THAT I AM NOT ALONE IN THIS PROBLEM! IF YOU LOOK ON CONSUMER AFFAIRS.COM THEY SHOW PEOPLE FROM AROUND THE COUNTRY WITH THE SAME PROBLEMS AND ALSO IF YOU GO TO HTTP://WWW.DAIMLERCHRYSLERVEHICLEPROBLEMS.COM/ THEY WILL ALSO TELL YOU OF PROBLEMS THAT WERE CAUSED DUE TO DEFECTS IN THE STEERING *IE,RACK & PINION ASSEMBLY. - Summary: WHILE ON MY WAY TO HAVE MY DURANGO SERVICED FOR THE RECALL TO IT'S BALL JOINTS, MY OIL PRESSURE DROPPED, THE ENGINE LIGHT CAME ON AND THEN THE CAR DIED. ALL WITHIN A MATTER OF MINUTES WHILE I WAS DRIVING ON A HIGHWAY. I HAD TO HAVE IT TOWED TO THE DEALERSHIP AND THEY SAID I NEEDED A NEW ENGINE. THEY CLAIMED IT WAS A MAINTENANCE PROBLEM. I HAD THE ENGINE REPLACED AT A LOCAL MECHANIC. I HAD A USED ENGINE PUT IN AND THE OLD ENGINE WAS TRADED IN ON THE NEW ONE. *AK
POWER TRAIN PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2004-12-15
- VIN: 3B7HF13ZX1G
- Components: POWER TRAIN
- Summary: AT AROUND 60K MILES, I WAS EXPERIENCING A SHIFTING LATENCY AT HIGHWAY SPEEDS AND OCCASIONAL POWER LOSS WHEN I TRIED TO ACCELERATE OR GO IN REVERSE. TOOK IT IN TO THE LOCAL AAMCO WHERE THEY SAID THAT I HAD HIGH LEVELS OF METAL SHAVINGS IN THE FLUID, AND THAT I NEEDED TO HAVE THE TRANSMISSION REBUILT. COST WAS $2800 NOT INCLUDING THE WARRANTY THAT I PURCHASED THROUGH THEM. FROM WHAT I UNDERSTAND (FROM THE DODGE FORUMS I FREQUENTLY VISIT) THIS IS A COMMON PROBLEM WITH THE SECOND GENERATION RAM'S, AND ONE THAT CHRYSLER SEEMS TO IGNORE. PERHAPS THAT IS WHY THEY ONLY WARRANTED THESE TRUCKS FOR 3 YEARS/36000 MILES. *JB
ELECTRONIC STABILITY CONTROL PROBLEM

- VIN: 1B4HR28N91F
- Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM
- Summary: I TOOK MY 01' DODGE DURANGO TO HARTZHEIM DODGE SERVICE CENTER FOR MY 90 THOUSAND MILE SERVICE, A COUPLE DAYS LATER THE "CHIME" CONSTANTLY GOES OFF , I TOOK IT BACK TO THE SERVICE CENTER 11/19/04 AND FOUND THAT THE MODULE "WORE OUT" THEY RECOMMENDED REPLACING CTM. I DECLINED, I FEEL THAT IT WAS THEIR MISTAKE AND I SHOULDN'T HAVE TO PAY TO REPLACE CTM ($300) AND THE CHIME STILL KEEP SOUNDING AND NO LIGHTS ON DASH. I'M CONCERNED, MY ALARM AND ALL ELECTRICAL IS CONSTANTLY COMING AND GOING. NEED ADVISE. *JB
SUSPENSION PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2004-01-10
- VIN: 1B4HS28N4YF
- Components: SUSPENSION
- Summary: RIGHT FRONT TIRE WAS WEARING EXCESSIVELY. UPON FURTHER INSPECTION, MY MECHANIC FOUND THAT THE UPPER BALL JOINTS ON MY 4X4 WERE FAILING RAPIDLY (HAD EXCESSIVE PLAY). MY MECHANIC WENT ON TO SAY THAT I WAS VERY LUCKY THIS HAD NOT COME APART WHILE DRIVING AS IT SURELY WOULD HAVE RESULTED IN A ROLL-OVER. HE FURTHER ADVISED ME TO KEEP A VERY CLOSE WATCH FOR ANY SIGNS OF DETERIORATION. DEALER SAYS I HAVE TO BUY THE ENTIRE STEERING UNIT TO FIX THE PROBLEM AT APPROXIMATELY $750, BUT THEY ARE ON A 45 DAY BACK ORDER. IT SEEMS THEY CANT BE MADE QUICK ENOUGH. I WAS TOLD THE BALL JOINT WAS WELDED AND COULD NOT BE REMOVED. THIS IS INCORRECT AS I REMOVED MINE QUITE EASILY. AFTER A LITTLE HEAT AND CAREFUL HAMMERING, I WAS ABLE TO BRING THE PLAY TO WITHIN ACCEPTABLE TOLERANCES. THE HEAT WHICH ALLOWED ME TO RE-FORM THE STEEL, ALSO SERVED TO ANNEAL THE STEEL, THUS MAKING IT STRONGER THAN THE ORIGINAL SOFT, UNHARDENED STEEL. ASIDE FROM USING UNHARDENED STEEL, I NOTICED SOMETHING ELSE THAT WOULD MAKE A FIRST YEAR ENGINEERING STUDENT SICK: METAL ON METAL WITH ABSOLUTELY NO LUBRICATION AND WORSE, NO WAY TO LUBRICATE IT IF I WANTED TO. THIS IS HORRENDOUS ENGINEERING AND A COMPLETE FAILURE ON THE PART OF CHRYSLER! *JB
ENGINE AND ENGINE COOLING PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2004-07-15
- Fire: 1
- VIN: 1B7KF23661J
- Components: ENGINE AND ENGINE COOLING
- Summary: A GASKET TYPE PART ON THE FRONT OF THE CAB BELOW THE WINDSHIELD AND UNDER THE HOOD KEPT COMING LOOSE. I PUT IT BACK AND IT CAME LOOSE AGAIN. IT FIT ONTO A LIP BUT WOULD NOT STAY. HALF OF IT EVENTUALLY FELL DOWN ONTO THE ENGINE AND CAUGHT FIRE, BURNING THE CAP OFF MY FREON CHARGER ALLOWING ALL MY FREON TO ESCAPE AND A HOLE IN MY AIR FILTER CASE ALLOWING DIRT IN THERE. I TOOK THE REMAINING PIECE OFF AND DID NOT REPLACE IT. MY MECHANIC SAID THAT THE DODGE IS NOTORIOUS FOR THIS AND THE ONLY WAY TO MAKE THAT PART STAY IN PLACE IS TO HAVE SOMEONE RIVET IT TO THE BODY OF THE TRUCK. HAD THE OTHER SIDE OF THIS GASKET FALLEN, IT WOULD HAVE BURNED ALL MY ELECTRICAL WIRING. MY 2001 2500 DODGE DIESEL HAD 90,000 MILES AT THE TIME. *JB
ELECTRICAL SYSTEM PROBLEM

- Summary: CAR HAS STALLED NUMEROUS TIMES WHILE DRIVING. THIS MEANS I HAVE VIRTUALLY NO STEERING AND NO BRAKES. A FEW TIMES IVE DRIVEN INTO CURBS TO KEEP FROM HITTING OTHER VEHICLES AND TO STOP MY VEHICLE. THIS WEEK IT HAPPENED FOUR TIMES IN ONE DAY WHILE TRAVELING ON CONGESTED STREETS. IT IS COMPLETELY RANDOM, HAPPENING ON RAINY DAYS, SUNNY DAYS HOT DAYS AND COLD DAYS. MY MECHANIC SAYS CHRYSLER IS AWARE OF THIS PROBLEM AND I SHOULD TAKE IT TO THE DEALER. WHILE THAT'S MY NEXT STEP, THIS TYPE OF PROBLEM SHOULD NOT BE HAPPENING. AND IF CHRYSLER IS AWARE OF THIS DANGEROUS PROBLEM, WHY HASN'T THERE BEEN A RECALL? *JB
SUSPENSION PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2003-06-20
- VIN: 1B4HR28N71F
- Components: SUSPENSION
- Summary: I OWN A DODGE DURANGO 2X4 YEAR 2001. MY COMPLAINT IS RELATED TO FRONT WEEL JOINT NOISE, WHEN I ATTEMPTED TO TAKE A SHARP "U" TURN I EXPERIENCED A REPEAT CLONKING NOISE, IT FELT LIKE THE WHEEL WILL FALL OFF. I ALSO EXPERIENCED UNEVEN TIRE WEAR ON THE SAME SIDE. SO I CALLED THE DEALER IN IRVINE CENTER WITH THE COMPLAINT THIS WAS A YEAR AGO, THEY SAID THEY WILL CHECK IT BUT I HAVE TO PAY FOR ALL THE EXPENSES, BECAUSE THERE IS NO RECALL AND MY WARRANTY IS OVER. THANK GOD I DID NOT EXPERIANCE ANY FAILURE YET, BUT I WOULD LIKE TO BE INCLUDED IN THE RECALL SYSTEM, BEFORE I EXPERIANCE ANY INCIDENT, CRASH, OR INJURY. YOUR SUPPORT IS GREATLY APPRECIATED. *AK
