Mazda Cx-7 2007 problems

mazda logo

The Mazda CX-7 is a mid-size crossover SUV from Mazda, and is the production version of the MX-Crossport concept car. It was shown publicly for the first time at the 2006 LA Auto Show in January. Production officially began on February 20, 2006 in Mazda's Ujina #2 factory in Hiroshima, and went on sale in April 2006 as a 2007 model. The CX-7 was Mazda's first mid-size SUV since the Navajo was discontinued in 1994, although the CX-7 is considered more of a 'Soft Roader'.

The mid-size CX-7 was positioned below the larger three-row Mazda CX-9; the vehicles did not share platforms. Instead, it used the Ford C1 platform that underpinned the Ford Focus and Mazda3. The CX-7 was discontinued in August 2012 in favor of the new Mazda CX-5; as the compact CX-5 has similar interior space to the mid-size CX-7.

Specifications

Engine and transmission

Power comes from the same 2.3 L inline-4 MZR L3-VDT DISI engine used in the Mazdaspeed3 and Mazdaspeed6 coupled with a six-speed Aisin F21 automatic transmission, and tuned to produce 244 hp or 182 kW (Australian model 175 kW) at 5000 rpm and 258 lb·ft (350 N·m) of torque at a low 2500 rpm, 99% of the maximum torque is available to 5000 rpm.

The MZR 2.3L DISI turbo engine was retuned in the North American specification CX-7 to deliver torque at a lower rpm for less turbo lag off the line, at the cost of power. This was achieved thanks to a redesigned, smaller K04 turbocharger. United Kingdom specification CX-7s featured the same, larger K04 turbocharger and transmission found in the Mazdaspeed line.

Common Mazda Cx-7 2007 problems

The Mazda CX-7, a popular crossover SUV introduced in 2006, has been known to have several common problems that owners have reported. One of the most prevalent issues is automatic transmission failure. This problem can prevent the vehicle from driving, making it a significant concern. However, it is usually easy to fix with the right steps.

Another common issue with the Mazda CX-7 is engine misfires. Engine misfires occur when the engine is not getting enough fuel and/or spark, leading to a rough engine performance. If left unattended, it can cause more severe problems, such as engine stalls. To address this problem, car owners can check the spark plugs for damage and replace them if necessary. They can also check the fuel system for clogs or leaks and repair them promptly. Additionally, adjusting the spark plug timing or replacing the fuel filter can help improve engine performance.

Oil leaks are another common problem with the Mazda CX-7. If a car owner notices a lot of oil under their vehicle, there could be a leak. Ignoring this problem can lead to more severe engine damage. Therefore, it is crucial to repair the leak as soon as possible.

The 2007 Mazda CX-7, in particular, has earned a reputation for being less reliable than its counterparts

The 2008 Mazda CX-7 also struggled with significant engine issues, mainly due to problems with the timing chain and the Variable Valve Timing (VVT) system. These engine problems have been linked to various issues, including ticking noises, faulty timing chains, and sludge-like oil, indicating further engine damage. The turbocharger problem from the previous year has also persisted in the 2008 CX-7, causing reduced performance and potentially severe engine damage.

In conclusion, the Mazda CX-7 has several common problems that owners have reported, including automatic transmission failure, engine misfires, and oil leaks. The 2007 and 2008 model years have shown a higher likelihood of encountering problems, particularly with the timing chain and engine issues. Therefore, potential car buyers should be wary when considering these model years. However, with the right care and maintenance, car owners can keep their Mazda CX-7 in tip-top shape and avoid costly repairs in the future.

SEAT BELTS,STRUCTURE,ENGINE PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2020-03-14
  • VIN: JM3ER293470
  • Components: SEAT BELTS,STRUCTURE,ENGINE
  • Summary: WE BOUGHT THE VEHICLE USED FROM A CAR DEALERSHIP CALLED HEAVY FOOT MOTORS IN SAN ANTONIO TX. THE VERY NEXT DAY, THE VEHICLE STARTED SMOKING FROM THE HOOD, EXHAUST, AND SMOKE CAME THROUGH THE AIR VENTS. MY WIFE GOING ABOUT 5-10MPH WHILE MAKING A TURN IN A RESIDENTIAL NEIGHBORHOOD WHEN THE SMOKING STARTED. WE TOWED THE VEHICLE TO THE DEALERSHIP AND EXPLAINED WHAT HAPPENED. THEIR MECHANIC TOOK THE VEHICLE AND HAD IT FOR THREE WEEKS. I PICKED THE VEHICLE UP AND MADE IT MAYBE 5 MINUTES DOWN THE ROAD, AND THE VEHICLE DID THE SAME THING. SO I HAD THE VEHICLE TOWED BACK TO THE DEALERSHIP AGAIN AND IT IS CURRENTLY THERE AS OF 4/4/2020. MY SAFETY CONCERN IS THAT THERE IS SMOKE COMING OUT OF THE ENGINE, EXHAUST, AS WELL AS THROUGH THE AC VENT AND GOING INTO THE VEHICLE. ALSO, WHEN I WENT TO INSTALL MY CHILDREN'S SEAT BELT WE REALIZED THE BACK SEATS SEAT BELTS DO NOT LOCK TO SECURE A CARSEAT. THAT IS A MAJOR SAFETY CONCERN FOR ME. ALSO, UPON PURCHASE I REALIZE THERE WAS NO DRIVER SIDE DOOR HANDLE. WE AGREED IN PURCHASE CONTRACT THAT THE DEALERSHIP WOULD PUT ONE ON IF I PURCHASED IT. I JUST FOUND IT STRANGE HOW YOU COULD SELL A CAR FROM A DEALERSHIP WITHOUT A DRIVER SIDE DOOR HANDLE. THAT IS A HUGE SAFETY CONCERN INCASE SOMETHING WERE TO HAPPEN AND THAT WAS THE ONLY DOOR TO OPEN FROM THE OUTSIDE. I ALSO REALIZE NOW THAT THE TRUNK DOES NOT OPEN, THE DOOR WILL NOT OPEN. I WILL BE GETTING A COPY OF THEIR MECHANIC'S REPORT WHERE HE STATED THAT IT IS HIS PROFESSIONAL OPINION THAT THE VEHICLE WAS SOLD IN THIS CONDITION. I HAVE REQUESTED A REFUND WHICH INITIALLY,( VERBALLY) I WAS TOLD WE WOULD GET IF IT IN FACT WAS SOLD IN THAT MANNER BUT NOW THEY HAVE BACKED OUT OF THAT. *TR

AIR BAGS PROBLEM

  • VIN: JM3ER29L870
  • Components: AIR BAGS
  • Summary: BEFORE I RECEIVED THE RECALL NOTICE I HAD TAKEN THE CAR IN TO STAR MAZDA AN AUTHORIZED DEALER IN GLENDALE TWICE FOR THE AIRBAG LIGHT WARNING SIGN WHICH HAD BEEN LIT UP ON THE DASHBOARD. TWICE STAR MAZDA CHARGED ME $140.00 FOR DIAGNOSTICS AND COULDN'T FIND THE PROBLEM WITH THE LIGHT. AFTER I RECEIVED THE NOTICE I TOOK THE CAR IN AND AFTER TWO HOURS THEY INDICATED THAT THEY REPLACE THE PARTS NEEDED AND IT IS A SIMPLE RECALL AND ITS NOT SO IMPORTANT. THE AIRBAG MALFUNCTION LIGHT IS STILL LIT ON THE DASHBOARD AND MY REGULAR MECHANIC STATED THAT THE AIRBAG MIGHT NOT FUNCTION ON MY CAR SINCE THE MALFUNCTION LIGHT IS LIT. PLEASE ADVISE. I HAVE ANOTHER MAZDA WITH THE SAME PROBLEM AND THE DEALER REFUSES TO RESOLVE THE AIRBAG WARNING SIGN WHICH IS ON RIGHT AFTER I TURN ON THE VEHICLE. THE OTHER MAZDA VIN # IS [XXX]. PLEASE ADVISE. ENGINE PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2014-06-13
  • VIN: JM3ER293170
  • Components: ENGINE
  • Summary: JUNE 2014, I WAS DRIVING VEHICLE OUT OF TOWN ON VACATION AND IT SUDDENLY BEGAN RUNNING ROUGH LIKE THE PISTONS WERE MISFIRING. MILEAGE WAS 69,700. I PULLED INTO A DEALERSHIP (1 MILE AWAY), DROPPED THE KEYS, AND CALLED TO EXPLAIN IN THE MORNING. LATER, THEY SAID THEY DROVE THE CAR AROUND THE LOT AND THE ENGINE LOCKED UP. THEY TOOK NO RESPONSIBILITY FOR MAKING IT WORSE AND CHARGED ME FOR CONFIRMING THE LOSS OF COMPRESSION IN THE PISTONS. WE REPLACED THE ENGINE AT GREAT EXPENSE AND TO A POOR RESULT. I FOUND THIS 2007 MODEL HAD A CHRONIC PROBLEM WITH THE VARIABLE VALVE TIMING (VVT) CAUSING THE TIMING CHAIN TO COME OUT OF ADJUSTMENT AND DESTROY THE ENGINE. INSTEAD OF ISSUING A RECALL AND FIXING IT, MAZDA OFFERED AN EXTENDED WARRANTY TO 6 YEARS-60,000 MILES. THIS IS ABOUT THE AVERAGE POINT OF FAILURE, MEANING HALF THE PEOPLE ARE NOT COVERED. A FEATURE OF THE TURBO CHARGER IS MAKING THE ENGINE RUN HOT, BURNING THE OIL, SO PEOPLE WERE OFTEN DENIED BECAUSE THE OIL "HAD NOT BEEN CHANGED." INTERESTINGLY, MAZDA SAID THE TIMING CHAIN HAD BEEN REPLACED UNDER WARRANTY WITH A PREVIOUS OWNER. THAT DATE AND LOCATION COINCIDED WITH A DATE OF SERVICE SHOWN ON CARFAX FOR TYPICAL MAINTENANCE ONLY. THAT DEALERSHIP SAID THEY COULD NOT POSSIBLY DO ANY WORK WITHOUT IT SHOWING ON CARFAX. I WONDER WHO MAZDA PAID FOR THE WARRANTY CLAIM... I WANT NHTSA TO COMPEL MAZDA TO COMPENSATE OWNERS WHO EXPERIENCED ENGINE FAILURE DUE TO THIS DOCUMENTED DESIGN FLAW.

I'M BEGINNING TO THINK THAT THE DEALER DIDN'T DO THE REPLACEMENT. OR MAYBE YOU HAVEN'T UPDATED THE DATABASE? I'M WORRIED BECAUSE THE MAZDA DEALER IS TELLING ME TO IGNORE THOSE NOTIFICATIONS. I'M TRYING TO CONTACT YOU BUT THERE'S NO WAY TO CONTACT ANYBODY IN NHTSA. THIS IS THE 2ND TIME I FILE A COMPLAINT AND THERE'S NO RESPONSE. I THINK YOU AREN'T DOING ENOUGH WITH THIS EMERGENCY. THE BULBS GETS TO HOT AND MELTING THE PLASTIC INSIDE THE HOUSING OF THE TAIL LIGHT ASSEMBLY. THIS CAR HAS A CLEAR TAIL LIGHT ASSEMBLY AND SINCE IT'S BURNING THE LENS IS BECOMING SMOKY. I THINK IT IS A SAFETY CONCERN THAT THIS BULB CAN CAUSE A FIRE IN THE FUTURE.

CAR IS IN A NO START CONDITION, CAR WAS TAKEN TO CLOSEST MAZDA DEALER AND THEY SAID THEY WOULD NOT FIX PROBLEM SINCE SOMEONE HAD BEEN IN THE MOTOR. THE MECHANIC CALLED THEIR SERVICE DEPARTMENT AND TOLD THEM EXACTLY WHAT HAD BEEN DONE AND THEY SAID THEY WOULD NOT MAKE IT RIGHT. • Components: AIR BAGS:FRONTAL:PASSENGER SIDE:INFLATOR MODULE
  • Summary: Mazda North America Operations (Mazda) is recalling certain 2009-2011 Mazda6, and 2007-2011 CX-7 and CX-9 vehicles. These vehicles are equipped with certain air bag inflators assembled as part of the passenger frontal air bag modules, and used as original equipment or replacement equipment. In the event of a crash necessitating deployment of the front air bags, these inflators may rupture due to propellant degradation occurring after long-term exposure to absolute humidity and temperature cycling.
  • Consequence: An inflator rupture may result in metal fragments striking the vehicle occupants resulting in serious injury or death.
  • Remedy: Owners are advised not to drive their vehicles until the remedy is performed. Mazda will notify owners, and dealers will replace the passenger frontal air bag inflator with an alternate inflator, free of charge. The recall began on August 30, 2017. Owners may contact Mazda customer service at 1-800-222-5500. Mazda's number for this recall is 1317F. Note: This recall supersedes recall 16V356 and all vehicles that were not remedied under that campaign are now covered by this one.

  • Manufacturer: Mazda North American Operations
  • Components: SUSPENSION:FRONT:CONTROL ARM:LOWER BALL JOINT
  • Summary: Mazda North American Operations (Mazda) is recalling certain model year 2007-2012 Mazda CX-7 vehicles manufactured February 14, 2006, to May 9, 2012. In the affected vehicles, water may enter the front suspension ball joint fittings. If the water is contaminated with salt, such as from driving on snowy roads that have been treated, the ball joint may corrode and separate from the lower control arm, resulting in a loss of steering control.
  • Consequence: A loss of steering control can increase the risk of a crash.
  • Remedy: Mazda will notify owners, and dealers will replace both front lower control arms, free of charge. As a priority, Mazda will first address all affected 2007-2008 vehicles as well as 2009-2011 vehicles currently registered in Connecticut, Delaware, Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Kentucky, Maine, Maryland, Massachusetts, Michigan, Minnesota, Missouri, New Hampshire, New Jersey, New York, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, Vermont, Virginia. Negative Mazda Cx-7 2007 car reviews

My wife, who is 46 years old, purchased this car brand new and has driven it for 50,000 miles. Unfortunately, we have had some issues with the car, including three batteries that were not covered, four sets of tires (the first set only lasted 8,000 miles), two different wheel bearings (the first one was covered, but the second one cost $460), and difficulty disengaging from park in sub-freezing weather. The biggest issue we faced was when the motor blew on a busy two-lane country road over Labor Day weekend. My wife and son were almost in a serious accident trying to steer to the side of the road. The timing chain broke and damaged the head, resulting in a $3,200 repair bill. Unfortunately, Mazda is not covering the cost of the repair. While we are frustrated with the situation, we believe that it is important to remain calm and work towards a solution. We hope that Mazda will reconsider their decision and stand behind their product. Thank you for your understanding.

I noticed something wrong with this engine right after I bought it. There is a clacking sound when starting it, and every now and then white smoke comes from the exhaust. Despite getting regular oil changes, I think the turbo is going bad. I purchased it from Monroeville Chrysler Jeep and Dodge, who overpriced it. When I took it back the next day, they denied any problems. Unfortunately, fixing the turbo will cost around 3000. I advise against taking the risk.

Hi there! I hope you're doing well. I wanted to share my experience with my 2007 Mazda CX-7 Turbo with AWD. About a year ago, I purchased this car and it has been a great ride so far. Recently, I needed to renew my inspection and drove down to the dealership for it. Unfortunately, they told me that the codes in the monitors were in readiness mode. My fiance and I took the car out for a spin on the highway, and after driving for 3 hours, we still didn't get the 3 major codes we needed. I've been taking the car on major trips for the last three months and have been making sure all of the oil changes and maintenance are done. However, I'm still not sure what the issue is. I've been on the phone with Mazda dealerships and taken it to a few different mechanics, but nobody seems to have an answer. Do you have any suggestions or recommendations? Thank you for your time!

When my wife and I were searching for a new small SUV, we test drove several models including the FX35, Pilot, MDX, RX330, 4 Runner, Highlander, Explorer, Murano, and more. After considering the price and options, we ultimately decided on the CX-7. Although I was initially sold on the FX35, my wife was hesitant to spend the extra $10k. While we do like the car, we have noticed some issues with turbo lag and engine roughness at highway speeds. These issues have made us hesitant to pull out into traffic and have caused some concern. We have taken it in for service once, but the problem persists. Additionally, there is a rattle that we have not been able to locate, which is concerning when driving at higher speeds. We are hoping to find a solution soon, but may consider trading it if the issues cannot be resolved.

  5. Angus Herzog 2024-06-11

The SUV is quick and has comfortable seats. It rides nicely during cruising speeds. However, the turbo lag takes away from the fun and can be very annoying, especially when pulling into traffic. The back seat is not practical for a family as it is very small with limited leg room. Additionally, the tires wear out quickly due to the front wheel drive with turbo and high performance soft tires, making them expensive to replace. The car is also a gas guzzler for a 4 cylinder. Although we owned this car for almost 3 years, we regretted this purchase and would give it a D+.

Positive Mazda Cx-7 2007 car reviews

I bought my grand touring a little under a month ago. It's fully loaded and I love every bit of it. It's fun to drive and just as fun to be in the passenger seat playing with the stereo. I wish it came with an iPod adapter built in, but at least I can get one put in.

The CX-7 offers a unique driving experience that sets it apart from Toyota's reliable products. If you're looking for an SUV that's more sporty and engaging to drive, the CX-7 is a great alternative. While I'm very happy with my CX-7, there are a few things to keep in mind. The acceleration can be a bit unpredictable due to noticeable turbo lag, and the ride is on the stiffer side, which is great for cornering but may not be ideal for those who prefer a smoother ride. Additionally, the front-wheel drive can cause some torque steer. Overall, the CX-7 is a great choice for those who want something different from a Toyota.

Living on the Gold Coast and trying to find a sporty car on a budget can be challenging, especially since prices here are 25% higher than in the States. However, we found the perfect fit with this car and even had some change to spare. Fuel is also an important factor for us, and at $1.23 per liter or $4.75 a gallon, we are pleased with the efficiency. We are loyal Mazda customers and this is our 5th Mazda in 5 years, including 2 Mazda 6s, an RX8, and a Tribute. We can confidently say that this car is the best one yet and we highly recommend it. Anything else would simply be second class.

  4. Sonny Greenfelder 2024-10-13

After checking out a few different vehicles, I stumbled upon the CX-7. Even though I was considering cars like CTS's and A4's, the CX-7 won me over. It has to be the most enjoyable SUV to drive and be seen in, as it attracts a lot of attention. Many people say it looks like a Lexus and in galaxy gray, it really looks like it costs $50,000 or more. I drive mostly on the highway and seem to be getting 27mpg with the cruise set at 70 and about 21 in town as long as you stay off the boost. The interior is extremely well built with almost Audi fit and finish levels. I can't express enough how much I enjoy driving this SUV, maybe the fact that I put 300 miles on it in the first 3 days I got it says it all.

  5. Akeem Breitenberg 2024-10-12

I've owned my CX-7 for about a month now and I absolutely love it! While it may be a bit slow off the line, once it gets going, it really picks up speed and handles like a dream. It's such a fun, sexy car and an absolute joy to drive. The only thing I wish it had was side molding to prevent those pesky 'parking lot' dings.
