2010 Mazda Cx-7 problems

mazda logo

The Mazda CX-7 is a mid-size crossover SUV from Mazda, and is the production version of the MX-Crossport concept car. It was shown publicly for the first time at the 2006 LA Auto Show in January. Production officially began on February 20, 2006 in Mazda's Ujina #2 factory in Hiroshima, and went on sale in April 2006 as a 2007 model. The CX-7 was Mazda's first mid-size SUV since the Navajo was discontinued in 1994, although the CX-7 is considered more of a 'Soft Roader'.

The mid-size CX-7 was positioned below the larger three-row Mazda CX-9; the vehicles did not share platforms. Instead, it used the Ford C1 platform that underpinned the Ford Focus and Mazda3. The CX-7 was discontinued in August 2012 in favor of the new Mazda CX-5; as the compact CX-5 has similar interior space to the mid-size CX-7.

Specifications

Engine and transmission

Power comes from the same 2.3 L inline-4 MZR L3-VDT DISI engine used in the Mazdaspeed3 and Mazdaspeed6 coupled with a six-speed Aisin F21 automatic transmission, and tuned to produce 244 hp or 182 kW (Australian model 175 kW) at 5000 rpm and 258 lb·ft (350 N·m) of torque at a low 2500 rpm, 99% of the maximum torque is available to 5000 rpm.

The MZR 2.3L DISI turbo engine was retuned in the North American specification CX-7 to deliver torque at a lower rpm for less turbo lag off the line, at the cost of power. This was achieved thanks to a redesigned, smaller K04 turbocharger. United Kingdom specification CX-7s featured the same, larger K04 turbocharger and transmission found in the Mazdaspeed line.

WHEELS PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2018-12-21
  • VIN: JM3ER2W56A0
  • Components: WHEELS
  • Summary: I WAS DRIVING HOME FROM WORK, TAKING A LEFT TURN, WHEN MY CAR JOLTED TO A STOP IN THE INTERSECTION. I WAS UNABLE TO MOVE MY CAR OUT OF THE INTERSECTION, BECAUSE THE WHEEL WASN'T ATTACHED PROPERLY ANYMORE. I CALLED FOR A TOW TRUCK, AND THE VEHICLE WAS TOWED TO A LOCAL AUTO SHOP. AT THE AUTO SHOP THEY DISCOVERED THAT A PREVIOUSLY RECALLED PART (LOWER CONTROL ARM) HAD FAILED, WHICH IS WHAT CAUSED ALL OF THE DAMAGE. I WAS NOT AWARE OF THIS RECALL. I CALLED THE MAZDA DEALERSHIP WHERE I PURCHASED THE VEHICLE TO ASK FOR ADVICE. I WAS ADVISED TO HAVE THE VEHICLE REPAIRED AT MY LOCAL AUTO SHOP, AND THEN TO SEND THE INVOICE TO MAZDA TO BE REIMBURSED FOR THE RECALLED PART/LABOR. I SENT THE INVOICE TO MAZDA, AND THEY SAID THEY COULDN'T PROVIDE REIMBURSEMENT UNTIL THE RECALL WAS CLOSED, AND IN ORDER TO DO THIS I NEEDED TO HAVE EVERYTHING CHECKED OFF/RECALL CLOSED BY A MAZDA DEALERSHIP. I TOOK MY VEHICLE BACK TO THE DEALERSHIP WHERE I PURCHASED IT FROM, THEY DID THE INSPECTION, AND CLOSED THE RECALL. THEN I SENT THE INVOICE AND THE DOCUMENTS STATING THE RECALL HAD BEEN CLOSED, BUT MAZDA STILL DENIED MY REQUEST SAYING THAT I NEEDED TO HAVE HAD THE REPAIRS DONE AT A MAZDA DEALERSHIP. I AM REQUESTING TO STILL BE REIMBURSED FOR THE LOWER CONTROL ARM (AT LEAST THE COST OF THE PART), SINCE I FOLLOWED THE ADVICE I WAS GIVEN FROM BOTH THE MAZDA DEALERSHIP AND MAZDA.

EXTERIOR LIGHTING PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2014-01-01
  • VIN: JM3ER4WL6A0
  • Components: EXTERIOR LIGHTING

THIS CAR IS A PIECE OF CRAP ALL THE WAY AROUND BUT THE HEADLIGHTS ARE REALLY BAD! ALSO THEY ARE SO CLOUDED OVER. I HAVE A HARD TIME DRIVING AT NIGHT AND NOW I JUST CAN'T BECAUSE I AM NOT GOING TO GET STOPPED AGAIN FOR HAVING A HEADLIGHT OUT! I ONLY DRIVE DURING THE DAY. I CAN'T BELIEVE THAT THEY DO NOT HAVE A RECALL FOR THIS PROBLEM, WHEN I SEE SO MANY COMPLAINTS ON THE SAME THING. THIS IS SUCH A STRESS ER FOR ME. I WISH THERE WAS SOMEONE OUT THERE THAT COULD HELP US IN THIS SITUATION.

ENGINE PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2019-01-08
  • VIN: JM3ER4W39A0
  • Components: ENGINE
  • Summary: TOOK CAR IN FOR AIR BAG RECALL (WHICH WAS FIXED). DEALER DID A FULL CIRCLE INSPECTION AND FOUND THE TIMING CHAIN NEEDED REPLACEMENT. WE RECEIVED A LETTER FROM MAZDA JANUARY, 2012 STATING THEY WERE EXTENDING THE WARRANTY TO 7 YRS FROM THE ORIGINAL WARRANTY DATE OR 70,000 MILES WHICHEVER COMES FIRST FOR REPAIRS TO THE TIMING CHAIN. THIS LETTER LEADS ME TO BELIEVE THEY KNEW THERE WERE ISSUES WITH THE TIMING CHAIN. OUR CAR HAS 39,100 MILES (OBVIOUSLY LOW FOR THE AGE OF THE CAR). WE WERE REQUIRED TO PAY FOR THE REPAIR OUT OF POCKET BECAUSE IT WAS OUTSIDE THE WARRANTY PERIOD. IT SEEMS VERY UNFAIR THAT OUR CAR WAS NOT COVERED FOR AN ISSUE MAZDA WAS CLEARLY AWARE OF IN 2012. WHILE IT WAS NOT AN ACTUAL RECALL, SOMETHING WAS WRONG WITH THE TIMING CHAIN AND ALL OWNERS SHOULD BE COMPENSATED FOR FAILURE OF THE CHAIN. I DO NOT KNOW EXACTLY WHAT CAN HAPPEN TO A CAR IF THE CHAIN BREAKS, BUT MY BEST GUESS IS IT WILL STOP RUNNING, WHICH IS A HUGE CONCERN REGARDING SAFETY OF THE VEHICLE.

EXTERIOR LIGHTING PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2018-03-31
  • VIN: JM3ER2W51A0
  • Components: EXTERIOR LIGHTING
  • Summary: HEADLIGHT BULBS HAVE BURNED OUT EVERY 6 MONTHS SINCE WE BOUGHT THE VEHICLE IN 2010. OVER THE PAST FEW YEARS, THE LENSES HAVE FOGGED UP TO THE POINT HEADLIGHTS ARE WORTHLESS. TOOK THE VEHICLE TO THE DEALER, ONE SEAL IS BAD AND THE OTHER SIDE HAS MELTED, COST OF REPAIR IS NEARLY $2,000. THIS IS A SAFETY ISSUE AND LOOKS TO BE A COMMON DEFECT IN THIS MAKE/MODEL OF CAR. WE NOW DRIVE THE CAR ONLY DURING DAYLIGHT. IF WE NEED TO AT NIGHT, WE USE HIGH BEAMS EXCLUSIVELY AS WE CAN'T SEE A THING WITH REGULAR HEADLIGHTS.

Negative 2010 Mazda Cx-7 car reviews

If you're considering purchasing this car, it's important to note that unless major repairs have been made to the engine, it may not be the most reliable option for you. Unfortunately, I experienced serious engine problems at 120k miles, which required costly repairs. However, I can confidently say that my Cx7 is in excellent shape now that I've had the fuel system rebuilt and replaced all the coils, spark plugs, and busted hydraulic engine mounts. If you have any questions about the car's reliability, feel free to ask!

  2. Easton Jacobs 2024-06-27

The 2010 Mazda CX-7 experienced a turbocharger failure at only 5,600 miles, which took over a week to repair. Despite the repairs, the car continued to have issues, leading to concerns for my safety. Unfortunately, this is a common problem with this model, and it also has poor resale value. Due to these issues, I made the decision to trade it in, resulting in a cost of approximately $9,000.

Positive 2010 Mazda Cx-7 car reviews

Hey there! I noticed that my neighbour got the Mazda CX7 Sport and I absolutely love the style and size of it. I decided to get one for myself and so far, I'm really enjoying it! I was a bit worried about switching from a 6 cylinder to a 4, but it's been great. Overall, I'm really happy with my choice. The only thing I've noticed is that there could be less road noise, but that might just be the tires or the road. :)

I love this car! I bought it brand new in November 2010. I got the Stormy Blue color and at night it looks like black. I love my car both inside and out, it's just perfect. I have never had any issues with it, it's very reliable. I have recommended Mazda to all my friends because of how reliable my car is.

  3. Craig Weber 2024-10-01

We love the car for all its positives above. Although there are some cons such as front pillar blind spots and so-so fuel economy, with current fuel prices it's not a big deal. In a November 2017 update, we had to replace the air conditioner for nearly $2,000, despite the vehicle having less than 60,000 miles. However, we still enjoy driving it!

  4. Jules Lang 2024-09-27

Overall, I really like the car! However, I did notice that the windshield tends to get quite foggy, which can cause water droplets to form on the inside of the glass. Additionally, I've experienced some issues with the auto window mode, as sometimes the windows will open halfway on their own (both driver and passenger windows).

  5. Omer Hagenes 2024-09-05

I've been driving the CX7 for 2 months and it has been a fantastic experience. It has handled a foot of snow, iced over roads, and heavy rain with ease thanks to its impressive AWD system. The leather interior is incredibly comfortable, the sound system is great, and the heated seats are a nice touch. With 50/50 city/highway driving, I've been getting a solid 19-20 mpg. The turbo is an absolute blast and provides a quick and exciting driving experience. The handling is just as advertised and has been a pleasure to drive. Overall, I am extremely satisfied with my CX7 so far.
