2009 Mazda Cx-7 problems
The Mazda CX-7 is a mid-size crossover SUV from Mazda, and is the production version of the MX-Crossport concept car. It was shown publicly for the first time at the 2006 LA Auto Show in January. Production officially began on February 20, 2006 in Mazda's Ujina #2 factory in Hiroshima, and went on sale in April 2006 as a 2007 model. The CX-7 was Mazda's first mid-size SUV since the Navajo was discontinued in 1994, although the CX-7 is considered more of a 'Soft Roader'.
The mid-size CX-7 was positioned below the larger three-row Mazda CX-9; the vehicles did not share platforms. Instead, it used the Ford C1 platform that underpinned the Ford Focus and Mazda3. The CX-7 was discontinued in August 2012 in favor of the new Mazda CX-5; as the compact CX-5 has similar interior space to the mid-size CX-7.
Specifications
Engine and transmission
Power comes from the same 2.3 L inline-4 MZR L3-VDT DISI engine used in the Mazdaspeed3 and Mazdaspeed6 coupled with a six-speed Aisin F21 automatic transmission, and tuned to produce 244 hp or 182 kW (Australian model 175 kW) at 5000 rpm and 258 lb·ft (350 N·m) of torque at a low 2500 rpm, 99% of the maximum torque is available to 5000 rpm.
The MZR 2.3L DISI turbo engine was retuned in the North American specification CX-7 to deliver torque at a lower rpm for less turbo lag off the line, at the cost of power. This was achieved thanks to a redesigned, smaller K04 turbocharger. United Kingdom specification CX-7s featured the same, larger K04 turbocharger and transmission found in the Mazdaspeed line.

Common 2009 Mazda Cx-7 problems
The Mazda CX-7, produced in 2009, has been reported to have several common problems based on complaints from its owners. One of the most frequently cited issues is the failure of the turbocharger.
Another significant problem with the 2009 Mazda CX-7 is the stretched timing chain. This issue has been reported to cause all valves in the engine to fail, leading to expensive repairs. The repair for this issue, which includes a new timing chain, new valves, and an unrelated oil leak fix, can cost up to $8,000. Despite the widespread nature of this problem, Mazda has not issued a recall or service advisory for the timing chain issue, leaving owners to bear the cost of repairs.
The 2009 Mazda CX-7 also struggles with significant engine issues, including problems with the timing chain and the Variable Valve Timing (VVT) system. These engine problems can lead to ticking noises, sludge-like oil, and even the need for a replacement engine. The turbocharger problem from previous years has also persisted in the 2009 CX-7, causing reduced performance and potential engine damage.
In summary, the 2009 Mazda CX-7 has several common problems, including turbocharger failure, stretched timing chain, and engine issues. These problems can lead to expensive repairs, and Mazda has not issued recalls or service advisories for many of these issues, leaving owners to bear the cost of repairs. Potential used car buyers should be wary when considering the 2009 Mazda CX-7 due to these significant problems.
What is the common problem with Mazda CX-7?
Common Problems with the Mazda CX-7
One of the most common problems is automatic transmission failure. If your CX-7's transmission isn't working properly, you won't be able to drive it. This can be a serious issue, but luckily, it's usually easy to fix. Another common problem is engine misfires.
Is a Mazda CX-7 a reliable car?
Both the 2008 and 2010 Mazda CX-7s had problems with turbo failure and premature engine breakage. These can be potentially dangerous or deadly issues on the road. In addition, note that while the 2011 Mazda CX-7 is generally known to be reliable, some users did have issues with transmission problems.
What engine is in a CX-7 2009?
Under the hood, the 2009 Mazda CX-7 boasts a 2.3-liter turbocharged four-cylinder engine borrowed from the previous Mazdaspeed6. With 244 horsepower and 258 pound-feet of torque, the CX-7 goes from 0 to 60 mph in 7.5 seconds. However, all that power takes a toll on fuel economy.
Is the 2008 Mazda CX-7 a good car?
When it comes to handling and brake performance, the 2008 Mazda CX-7 lives up to the "soul of a sports car" hype. The power steering is nicely weighted, and the effort increases in direct proportion to cornering forces. This SUV feels very stable in turns and changes direction quickly.

Hello! I hope you're doing well. I wanted to share my experience with my car that I purchased (leased) back in January of 2009. I spent weeks researching before making my decision and I have to say, it's been a blast to drive! Not to mention, it looks great in black on black. However, I have been experiencing some strange issues with the car lately. At first, I thought it was something I was doing wrong, but it turns out that occasionally when I return to my locked car, the front windows are halfway down and the moon roof is partially opened. Additionally, sometimes after turning off the car, the driver's seat automatically moves back. I took it to the dealership and they replaced the main 'brain modular', but unfortunately, the issue has started happening again. I'm not quite sure what to make of it, but I wanted to share my experience with you. Thank you for listening!

Hey there! I'm glad to hear that you haven't encountered any major issues with your car yet. It sounds like you've only put 900 miles on it so far, which is great!

I highly recommend the 2009 CX-7 Grand Touring FWD. Its wonderful style and overall performance make it a great choice. While the navigation system could benefit from a complete overhaul, this does not detract from the car's many positive features. I am confident in my recommendation and encourage others to experience the joy of driving this car.

It's a great car! The CX5 has options that would have suited this car, like cargo space and good Bluetooth connectivity. It handles well on the curves, with great acceleration and braking systems. It has a turbo engine, so you have to feed it the oil to keep it at maximum performance.

The CX-7 AWD Sport is a great combination of sport and utility. While the interior looks nice, the quality of the materials could be improved. Additionally, there is some wind noise and side mirror vibration when driving over 60 mph, and blind spots can be an issue. The cost of replacing the back lights is also quite high. However, the car is fun to drive, and it's great to have leather seats. I purchased my '09 CX-7 AWD Sport (w/Leather) in July for USD 23000 OTD and enjoyed it until my cousin bought a 2010 model (no leather) with nicer interior and more options for 21,000 OTD from the same dealer. Overall, be prepared for some trips to the gas station, but it's a fun car to drive. Just be careful not to get a ticket!

You traded in a 2007 Mazdaspeed6 Grand Touring which you were leasing for an 09 CX-7 Sport. Although you miss all the bells and whistles, this is still a fun car to drive. The exterior styling is awesome, but the interior is a bit bland. You may experience some torque steer under moderate acceleration. After driving for a few days, you may wish you had spent the cash and upgraded to the Touring model.

For me, having a car that is both fun to drive and practical is a top priority. The CX7 fits the bill perfectly with its excellent handling and good power. It has a sporty look, feel and drive, and the tech package is great with lots of nice features for the money. However, I have been a bit disappointed with the excessive road noise and lackluster Bose stereo. In terms of gas mileage, it gets around 18MPG in the city and 22MPG on the highway. In my opinion, the Rav4 and Forester are the best all-around choices, while the Santa Fe offers the most refinement and bang for the buck. The CX-7 is the best sporty crossover and a great option for those looking for a more affordable alternative to the FX35, X3, and RDX.
