The Hyundai Santa Fe (Korean: 현대 싼타페) is an automobile produced by the South Korean manufacturer Hyundai since 2000. It is a five-door crossover SUV that either has front-wheel drive or four-wheel drive. It is named after the city of Santa Fe, New Mexico, and was introduced for the 2001 model year as Hyundai's first SUV. The Santa Fe was a milestone in the company's restructuring program of the late 1990s because the SUV was a hit with American buyers. Between 2006 and 2012, the Santa Fe was positioned between the smaller Tucson compact crossover and the larger Veracruz.

The third-generation Santa Fe introduced in 2012 was available in two versions, which are regular (short) and extended long-wheelbase version. The short model was sold as the Santa Fe Sport in North America (three-row seating was not available) and simply Santa Fe in global markets (three-row seating was standard or optional), while the extended long-wheelbase model is called the Santa Fe in the US, Santa Fe XL in Canada and called the Hyundai Maxcruz in South Korea. The fifth and current generation was released in 2023 and omits diesel engines in favor of petrol hybrid powertrains.

As of 2022, the Santa Fe is positioned between the smaller Tucson – which the Santa Fe shares platform with – and the larger Palisade in Hyundai's global crossover SUV line-up.

Common 2004 Hyundai Santa fe problems

The Hyundai Santa Fe, a popular midsize SUV, has had its fair share of issues and complaints from owners over the years. While the model has generally been considered reliable, certain model years have had more problems than others. Here are some of the most common problems with the Hyundai Santa Fe, specifically the 2004 model, based on complaints from owners.

  • Engine Issues: Engine problems are a common issue with many vehicles, and the Hyundai Santa Fe is no exception. In earlier models, such as the 2007 and 2008 Santa Fe, drivers reported engine failure around 80,000 miles, which ultimately led to the full replacement of the engine. Drivers of other model years have reported that their engine stalls or comes to a complete stop without warning, which could lead to a dangerous situation.
  • Transmission Problems: Transmission issues are another common problem with the Hyundai Santa Fe. Some drivers have reported difficulties with shifting and rough rides, which could affect the driving experience significantly. The 2017 Hyundai Santa Fe, in particular, has been reported to have issues with its transmission and suspension system, which could lead to difficulties with shifting and a rough ride.
  • Suspension Problems: Suspension problems are also a common issue with the Hyundai Santa Fe. Drivers have reported weak support from the front struts, which could lead to damage to the cups. The Springs are also expectedly weak and cannot withstand overloads, which could lead to the rods breaking off. The front levers are sturdy, but the ball tab is replaceable, and weak rubber elements require replacement even with runs up to 60,000 miles .
  • Electrical Problems: Electrical issues are also a common problem with the Hyundai Santa Fe. Some drivers have reported problems with the power steering, such as abrasion of the installation side of the central oil seal and the flimsy structure. The rail is also not happy with the abrasion of the installation side of the central oil seal and the flimsy structure, which could lead to knocking due to the wear of the side bushings .

While these are some of the most common problems with the 2004 Hyundai Santa Fe, it's important to note that not all Santa Fe models will experience these issues. Additionally, many of these problems can be addressed with proper maintenance and repairs. If you do own a Santa Fe that needs to be serviced, or if you have questions about any other vehicle, it's always best to consult with a trusted auto repair shop or dealer.

SUSPENSION PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2017-03-10
  • VIN: KM8SC73E54U
  • Components: SUSPENSION
  • Summary: THIS WAS COVERED BY HYUNDIA RECALL CAMPAIGN 124. I FILLED UNDER CASE # 9878948. SPRING REPAIR 2/12/14, SOLD CAR 4/5/14, RECALL 2/4/15. THEY ONLY WOULD PAY FOR $318 OF THE $917 TOTAL REPAIR AND SAID IT HAS TO GO TO A HYUNDIA DEALERSHIP. THEY REFUSED TO PAY FOR THE SENSERS, STRUT MOUNTS , SWAY BAR LINK ETC PER THE INVOICE. I CONTACTED THE PERSON I SOLD IT TO AND MADE A DEALER APPMT BUT THEY DIDN'T SHOW. HYUNDIA CONSUMER AFFAIRS 800-633-5151 TOLD ME TO FILE A DISPUTE WITH BBB AUTOLINE WHICH I DID UNDER CASE # HYU1713624. THEY NEVER RESPONDED. BBB AUTOLINE NOW SAYS THAT THEY DON'T HANDLE RECALLS DISPUTES BUT YOU DO. I JUST TALKED TO THEM AND THEY REFERRED ME TO YOU. WITHOUT EVER TALKING TO ME, WHILE I WAS TRYING TO GET THE CAR INTO A DEALER AND WAITING FOR THE BBB AUTOLINE RESPONSE HYUNDIA CLOSED OUT THE CASE. IRONICALLY HYUNDIA WOULD HAVE REPLACED BOTH SPRINGS WITH OEM, ALL OTHER DAMAGED PARTS AND ANY DAMAGED TIRES PER THEIR RECALL. IT WOULD HAVE COST THEM 2X AS MUCH AS THE $917. THEY WOULDN'T EVEN CALL MY MECHANIC WHO THE LOCAL HYUNDIA DEALER ACKNOWLEDGED AS REPUTABLE. IN OUR CASE, THE BROKEN SPRING BENT THE STRUT, DAMAGED THE SWAY BAR AND TORE THE ABS SENSOR WIRE. THE LANGUAGE IN THE RECALL INFORMATION ACTUALLY CALLS FOR THE DEALER TO REPLACE INSTALLED NON-OEM STRUTS WITH OEM STRUTS SO THE NEW BRACKET WILL FIT PROPERLY. GIVEN THIS, I AM SURPRISED THAT YOU CHOSE NOT TO PAY FOR THE COST OF THE ONE STRUT AND MOUNT ($62.1 6 +$135.88) & REPAIR ($37.20) AND THE SPRING REPAIR ($37.20). LIKEWISE HYUNDIA CHOSE NOT TO PAY FOR THE DAMAGED ABS SENSOR ($175.94) AND ITS REPAIR ($55.80). IN MINNESOTA, LIKE MOST STATES, PARTS ARE SUBJECT TO SALES TAX OF 7.125%. IN THIS CASE IT ADDED UP TO ($45.25) WHICH HYUNDIA CHOSE NOT TO PAY. LIKEWISE HYUNDIA CHOOSE NOT TO PAY THE SHOP SUPPLIES ($13.18) AND THE ENVIRONMENTAL FEE ($4.93) WHICH ARE PRETTY TYPICAL.

2004 Hyundai Santa fe recalls

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) has issued 3 recalls for different components of the 2004 Hyundai Santa fe.

2014-07-18
  • Manufacturer: Hyundai Motor Company
  • Components: SUSPENSION:FRONT:SPRINGS:COIL SPRINGS
  • Summary: Hyundai Motor Company (Hyundai) is recalling certain model Year 2001-2006 Santa Fe vehicles manufactured from March 31, 2000, through February 15, 2006, that are registered and operated, or which were originally sold and registered, in the following 20 “salt belt" states and the District of Columbia: Connecticut, Delaware, Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Maine, Maryland, Massachusetts, Michigan, Minnesota, Missouri, New Hampshire, New Jersey, New York, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, Vermont, West Virginia, and Wisconsin. The affected vehicles may experience front coil spring corrosion from road salt, causing the coil spring to fracture and make contact with the tire.
  • Consequence: If the front coil spring fractures due to corrosion it could cause the coil spring to make contact with the tire, possibly puncturing the tire and increasing the risk of a vehicle crash.
  • Remedy: Hyundai will notify owners, and dealers will inspect and if necessary replace the coil spring, free of charge. The recall began on October 24, 2014. Owners may contact Hyundai customer service at 1-800-633-5151. Hyundai's number for this recall is 124.
2004-03-16
  • Manufacturer: HYUNDAI MOTOR COMPANY
  • Components: SERVICE BRAKES, HYDRAULIC:ANTILOCK/TRACTION CONTROL/ELECTRONIC LIMITED SLIP:CONTROL UNIT/MODULE
  • Summary: ON CERTAIN SPORT UTILITY VEHICLES EQUIPPED WITH 3.5 LITER V-6 ENGINES, 4-WHEEL DRIVE AND ANTILOCK BRAKING SYSTEMS (ABS), IF THE BRAKE PEDAL IS DEPRESSED AT SPEEDS BETWEEN 3 AND 12 MPH WHEN THE BRAKE PAD FRICTION SURFACES ARE WET, A VIBRATION MAY OCCUR BETWEEN THE BRAKE DISCS AND PADS CAUSING ABS SENSOR ELECTRONIC SIGNAL NOISE TO DEVELOP. AT SPEEDS BELOW 5 MPH, THE ABS SENSOR SIGNAL NOISE MAY CAUSE THE ABS ELECTRONIC CONTROL UNIT (ECU) TO ACTIVATE THE ABS, EXTENDING THE STOPPING DISTANCE.
  • Consequence: IF AN EXTENDED STOPPING DISTANCE OCCURS, IT COULD RESULT IN A CRASH.
  • Remedy: DEALERS WILL REPROGRAM THE ABS ECU. OWNER NOTIFICATION BEGAN ON MARCH 24, 2004. OWNERS SHOULD CONTACT HYUNDAI AT 1-800-633-5151.
2003-12-18

  • Consequence: THE TIRE PRESSURE LABELS DO NOT CONTAIN THE INFORMATION REQUIRED BY THE STANDARD.
  • Remedy: OWNERS WILL BE PROVIDED WITH A CORRECT LABEL AND INSTALLATION INSTRUCTIONS. OWNER NOTIFICATION BEGAN ON OCTOBER 29, 2003. OWNERS SHOULD CONTACT HYUNDAI AT 1-800-633-5151.

Negative 2004 Hyundai Santa fe car reviews

  1. Lewis Wilkinson 2024-10-09

I researched all the available SUVs that I could get for less than $30k and found that the Santa Fe is a solid car with many features that I like. Although I did have to take it into the dealer four times for emission problems, I have had no major issues with it at 17,000 miles. I appreciate the good power, solid handling, and many features such as heated seats and sunroof. However, I do find the door armrests to be hard as a rock and very uncomfortable. Additionally, the horizontal buttons on the console are too easy to push accidentally, which can be very irritating. Lastly, the rear seats do not fold down flat, reducing its utility. Overall, I still think the Santa Fe is a great car for the price point.

  2. Woodrow Schmitt 2024-09-17

Although I have had a negative experience with my vehicle, I am confident that the issues will be resolved. Despite the fact that it has been in the shop twice in less than two months and some parts have already malfunctioned, I trust that the manufacturer will address the problems. While I may not purchase this particular make and model again, I am confident that the company will continue to improve their products.

  3. Moises Bogisich 2024-06-01

Sorry to hear about your car troubles! It sounds like you've had a bit of a rough time with it. However, it's great to hear that the roadside service was helpful and that you were able to get the car fixed. It's understandable to feel a bit nervous about future breakdowns, but hopefully, with the new engine module, your car will be running smoothly for a long time. It's also good to know that the dealership was able to fix the torn seat. Thanks for sharing your experience, and I hope your car serves you well in the future!

  4. Micheal Okuneva 2024-04-16

Hi there! I hope you're doing well. I wanted to share my experience with my car. I've had it for 18 months now, and although I bought it used with 20,500 miles on it, it has now clocked 49,000 miles. Recently, I had to take it to the dealership to have the transmission replaced. Unfortunately, the check engine light is always on, and even after the dealership fixed a vacuum problem to correct the CEL, it came back on again just 8 miles from the dealership. I must admit, I had high hopes for this car, but after having to take it to the dealership at least 8 times in 18 months for CEL and tranny issues, I no longer have any hopes for it. Although I love the style and size, and it gets fairly decent gas mileage and rides nice, those things just do not make up for the mechanical problems and being without my car. Thanks for listening to my experience!

I've owned 2 Santa Fe's (2001 & 2004) and unfortunately, both had engine failures at around 60,000 miles. Despite having all their regularly scheduled maintenance performed by the book, both failed on the freeway, placing me in very serious safety conditions. The 2004 failure was particularly scary as it happened at night in the middle of the Arizona Desert while I was driving at 70 mph. However, I was able to get towed over 150 miles to a Hyundai Dealer. Although the small block failed just 68 miles past the warranty, Hyundai initially refused to pay for the repair. After a tremendous amount of effort on my part, they finally covered 30%.

Built solid, I loved my Santa Fe. The engine purred like a kitten from mile zero all the way up to 142000 miles when I traded it in. I bought it in 2004 and traded it in 2008. I still regret trading it in to this day. There are so many practical reasons to own a Santa Fe.

In the 4 months since you bought it with 59 miles, you've logged almost 12,000 miles! That's amazing! I'm glad to hear that it's easy to maneuver and has great braking response even in wet weather conditions.

This Sante Fe is a great deal for the price and comes well-equipped. With the 3.5 V6 engine, it has plenty of power for hills and interstate driving. I personally test drove the smaller engines and found that the 3.5 V6 is the way to go. During my initial check of gas mileage, I was pleased to find that it gets 21mpg @ 75mph on interstate driving. We purchased the Sante Fe for my wife to drive to work in northern Minnesota and it handles bad weather like a champ, easily handling 6 inches of fresh snow with no trouble.

I've owned my Santa Fe for four years now and it has been a great experience overall. The vehicle has been very reliable and I haven't had to do any major maintenance work on it. It's a lot of fun to drive and looks just as stylish as some of the more expensive SUVs on the road. I always had a great ownership experience when dealing with Arnold Hyundai and never had any problems. However, after Arnold Hyundai moved far from my home, I went to Suburban Hyundai in Troy, MI and unfortunately didn't have a good experience there. So, I decided to go back to Arnold (Victory) Hyundai!
