The Mazda CX-7 is a mid-size crossover SUV from Mazda, and is the production version of the MX-Crossport concept car. It was shown publicly for the first time at the 2006 LA Auto Show in January. Production officially began on February 20, 2006 in Mazda's Ujina #2 factory in Hiroshima, and went on sale in April 2006 as a 2007 model. The CX-7 was Mazda's first mid-size SUV since the Navajo was discontinued in 1994, although the CX-7 is considered more of a 'Soft Roader'.

The mid-size CX-7 was positioned below the larger three-row Mazda CX-9; the vehicles did not share platforms. Instead, it used the Ford C1 platform that underpinned the Ford Focus and Mazda3. The CX-7 was discontinued in August 2012 in favor of the new Mazda CX-5; as the compact CX-5 has similar interior space to the mid-size CX-7.

Engine and transmission

Power comes from the same 2.3 L inline-4 MZR L3-VDT DISI engine used in the Mazdaspeed3 and Mazdaspeed6 coupled with a six-speed Aisin F21 automatic transmission, and tuned to produce 244 hp or 182 kW (Australian model 175 kW) at 5000 rpm and 258 lb·ft (350 N·m) of torque at a low 2500 rpm, 99% of the maximum torque is available to 5000 rpm.

The MZR 2.3L DISI turbo engine was retuned in the North American specification CX-7 to deliver torque at a lower rpm for less turbo lag off the line, at the cost of power. This was achieved thanks to a redesigned, smaller K04 turbocharger. United Kingdom specification CX-7s featured the same, larger K04 turbocharger and transmission found in the Mazdaspeed line.

  • Summary: Mazda North American Operations (Mazda) is recalling certain model year 2007-2012 Mazda CX-7 vehicles manufactured February 14, 2006, to May 9, 2012. In the affected vehicles, water may enter the front suspension ball joint fittings. If the water is contaminated with salt, such as from driving on snowy roads that have been treated, the ball joint may corrode and separate from the lower control arm, resulting in a loss of steering control.
  • Consequence: A loss of steering control can increase the risk of a crash.
  • Remedy: Mazda will notify owners, and dealers will replace both front lower control arms, free of charge. As a priority, Mazda will first address all affected 2007-2008 vehicles as well as 2009-2011 vehicles currently registered in Connecticut, Delaware, Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Kentucky, Maine, Maryland, Massachusetts, Michigan, Minnesota, Missouri, New Hampshire, New Jersey, New York, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, Vermont, Virginia.     In April 2012, we purchased a 2008 CX 7 with 62,000 miles on it. At that time, the vvt adjuster and chain were replaced. Unfortunately, in March 2013, only 14,000 miles later, the vvt is out again and the turbo is also out. After receiving a $3000 quote to repair it, my dealer called back and informed me that the car would need a new engine, which would cost $6,000. Mazda has not been very helpful in resolving this issue and it has been pushed up the chain of command. The dealer claims that the problem was caused by 'sludge', which they say is normal in this engine. I am curious to see how this situation will be resolved.

    I initially loved the CX-7, but unfortunately, after owning it for over a year, my opinion has changed. While the engine produces excellent power, it is held back by the automatic transmission. In auto mode, it's okay, but manual mode is a bit of a joke. Shifting takes so long that without perfect timing, optimal acceleration is impossible. A manual version, which is available overseas, would really improve the driving experience. We've had some issues, the biggest being the A/C failing. I've noticed that others have had the same A/C issues, and unfortunately, dealerships don't seem to be covering them under warranty. Additionally, it seems to wear out tires quickly. There are more issues I could mention, but I don't have enough space to list them all. I won't be purchasing a new Mazda again.

    I was really excited about driving a Mazda, as I love foreign cars and their reputation for longevity. Unfortunately, my experience did not live up to my expectations. I purchased the car with only 16k miles, but at 70k miles, the engine failed. Initially, I thought it was a timing chain issue, but it turned out to be something else. Unfortunately, Mazda did not stand by their product and their warranty was not helpful. After researching, I discovered that there are known engine problems with cars like mine. It's disappointing that a well-maintained car would have such issues at such low mileage. In contrast, I had a VW that lasted 10 years and 144k miles without any problems. I hope Mazda takes responsibility for these issues and improves their cars. For anyone considering a 2007 or 2008 CX-7, I would advise caution and recommend researching the engine problems before making a purchase.

    I have been driving Hondas for 30 years and purchased a Mazda 2 years ago. Despite regular maintenance and the use of synthetic oil, the turbo recently failed. However, the Mazda dealership is refusing to honor the warranty due to the presence of 'sludge' in the engine. They have suggested replacing the entire engine at a cost of $9000. Despite not having my oil changes done at the dealership, I am confident that I have taken good care of my car. Unfortunately, I did not think to ask for copies of the oil changes from the previous owner, which would have helped me prove that the oil was changed every 3,000 miles.

    This was my second car ever and I was completely in love until the car's issues began. It was disheartening to see my beloved car break down so frequently. The turbo failed twice, the tires needed to be changed at 20000 miles, the navigation system only works intermittently, the engine makes a very loud ticking noise, the car squeaks like a 30-year-old car, the battery just went due to a bad starter (I am still fighting with the dealership over that), the gas mileage is terrible, the paint scratches very easily, and the ABS has failed more than once. This car could be an awesome car if the problems were fixed. I loved it so much when I bought it!

    I purchased this car brand new on December 31st, 2007 and have driven it for just over 55,000 miles. I have taken it to the dealer for regular maintenance and oil changes. Recently, I had a bearing start to go around 54,500 miles, but the dealer replaced it under warranty at no charge. Overall, it's a great car. The Grand Touring package, which includes leather seats, makes it just as luxurious as a Lexus. It's also a great car for driving in the snow, as long as you change out the factory tires. The gas mileage is okay, averaging around 20-21 miles per gallon. I think it would also make a great used car purchase, as it has a lot of features and is not your typical boxy SUV.
