1991 Dodge Dynasty problems

dodge logo

The Dodge Dynasty is a mid-size four-door sedan that was marketed by the Dodge division of Chrysler Corporation from 1988 until 1993 model years. Serving as the direct successor of the Dodge 600 sedan, the Dynasty was slotted between the Dodge Spirit and Dodge Monaco in the Dodge sedan line.

One of the largest Chrysler K-car variants, the Dynasty used the front-wheel drive Chrysler C/AC platform, sharing its body with the 1988–1993 Chrysler New Yorker. The 1990 through 1993 Chrysler New Yorker Fifth Avenue and Chrysler Imperial share the platform with the Dynasty/New Yorker, but use an extended-wheelbase chassis, denoted the Chrysler Y platform (the longest-wheelbase sedan variant of the K-car).

Chrysler assembled the Dodge Dynasty at its Belvidere Assembly Plant facility (Belvidere, Illinois) alongside the Chrysler New Yorker, New Yorker Fifth Avenue, and Imperial. The final vehicle was produced on May 28, 1993. For the 1993 model year, Dodge introduced the Dodge Intrepid as its largest sedan line, replacing both the Dynasty and the Monaco.

FUEL SYSTEM, GASOLINE PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2013-09-11
  • VIN: 1B3XC46R5MD
  • Components: FUEL SYSTEM, GASOLINE
  • Summary: I SMELLED A STRONG ORDER OF GAS WHEN DRIVING, WHEN I CHECKED UNDER THE HOOD THERE WAS A CONSTANT DRIPPING FRO THE FUEL RAIL SUPPLYING THE FUEL INJECTORS...FIRST , IT WAS A SMALL DRIPPING ON THE FRONT VALVE COVER AND AFTER 2-3 MONTHS ITS A STRONG CONTINUOUS DRIPPING FILLING UP THE VALVE COVER SPILLING INTO THE MANIFOLD AREA. I HAVE RESTRICTED DRIVING MY CAR TO 5-7 MILES AT A TIME TO PREVENT POSSIBLE FIRES. MY MECHANIC CALLED THE DEALERSHIP TO SEE HOW MUCH THEY COST AND THIS U-SHAPED ALUMINUM TUBING ABOUT 14" LONG ,8" CONNECTING TUBE WHERE IT IS LEAKING FROM TO ANOTHER PIECE OF ALUMINUM 14" TUBING THAT GOES UNDERNEATH THE MANIFOLD IS $300.00 AND $150 TO INSTALL IT. I THINK IT IS A FACTORY DEFECT THAT THE MANUFACTURING DEALER IS GOUGING ALMOST PUNISHING THEM FOR NEEDING THE PART BY CHARGING 3XS WHAT THE PIPING/TUBING REALLY SHOULD COST. MY MECHANIC AND I HAVE BEEN ALL OVER THE WEB LOOKING FOR THE SAME PART BUT ALL OF THEM SAY ITS A DISCONTINUED PARTS AND CAN ONLY BE BOUGHT BY THE DEALERSHIP. WHAT A RIP OFF THEY KNOW ITS A FACTORY DEFECT AND IN HIGH DEMAND BUT THEY ARE NOT MAKING ANYMORE THAN THAT WANT TO MAKE TO KEEP THE DEMAND HIGH AND TO MAKE A BIG PROFIT ON A DESIGN MISTAKE IN THEIR FUEL SYSTEM DESIGN THAT THEY SOLD TO THE PUBLIC. THEY PROBABLY KNEW IT WAS A DEFECTIVE DESIGN BUT PUSHED IT THROUGH ANYWAY. *TR

ENGINE AND ENGINE COOLING PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2007-03-14
  • VIN: 1B3XC56R4MD
  • Components: ENGINE AND ENGINE COOLING
  • Summary: PURCHASED SAID VEHICLE IN SEPT. 2006 USED. WAS JUST DRIVING AT POSTED SPEED LIMITS IN A COMMUNITY AREA OF PHOENIX, WHEN ALL OF A SUDDEN A LOUD CLACKING NOISE STARTED AS I PULLED UP TO MY DESIGNATION, SO I TURNED OFF THE MOTOR, LIFTED THE HOOD AND IMMEDIATELY NOTICED THAT THE TENSION PULLEY HAD NEARLY COMPLETELY CAME OFF THE MOTOR. IT DID CAUSE THE SERPINTINE BELT TO COME OFF OF ALL THE PULLIES OF THE MOTOR. I HAD TO HAVE THE VEHICLE TOWED HOME, AGAIN FOR THE SECOND TIME SINCE SEPT. 2006. HEN THE VEHICLE WAS AT MY HOME I FINISHED REMOVING THE PULLEY THAT WAS LOOSE, CAUSING IT TO BENT ENOUGH TO THROW IT TOTALLY OFF OF ITS TENSION PURPOSE. UPON REMOVAL A BOLT WAS ALSO BROKEN WHICH MAY HAVE CAUSED THE TOTAL PROBLEM BECAUSE IT WAS NOT TIGHTENED TO TORQUE SPECS. HAD TO REPLACE BOTH PARTS ATTACHED TO THIS PULLEY.*AK

  • Summary: FOR THE THIRD TIME WITHIN A 3 YEAR PERIOD MY CAR WILL START AND RUN FOR ABOUT 2 SECONDS AND TURN OFF, I HAD IT TOWED AND THE MECHANICS WOULD REPLACED THE MAIN COMPUTER, OR SAY THEY DID, AND CHARGE ME A GREAT DEAL OF MONEY. I SEARCHED RECENTLY ON THE INTERNET TO SEE IF OTHERS HAVE HAD THE SAME PROBLEM, AND I FOUND THAT IT IS A DEFECTIVE PART PROBLEM FOUND AT THIS SITE---HTTP://AUTOREPAIR.ABOUT.COM/LIBRARY/A/1F/BL111F.HTM I SHOULD NOT HAVE TO PAY FOR A DEFECTIVE PART WHICH IS TIED IN TO AN ANTI THEFT FEATURE. *JB

FUEL SYSTEM, GASOLINE PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2006-10-14
  • VIN: 1B3XC56R4MD
  • Components: FUEL SYSTEM, GASOLINE
  • Summary: PURCHASED VEHICLE USED OCT. 2006. NEAR MINT CONDITION. POWER EVERYTHING & EVERYTHING FUNCTIONS PERFECT. VEHICLE EMISSIONS PERFECT. APPROX. 4 DAYS AFTER FINAL REGISTRATION WAS SWITCHED, PLATED, & INSURED, I HOPPED ONTO THE FREEWAY, DOING ABOUT 65 MPH. WHEN SUDDENLY IN A MATTER OF SECONDS, I WAS TOTALLY OVERWHELMED BY THE SMELL OF GAS. I BECAME SERIOUSLY NAUSEOUS AND LIGHT HEADED AND HAD TO IMMEDIATELY EXIT THE FREEWAY TO FIND SOMEWHERE TO PULL OVER AS FAST AS I POSSIBLE COULD WITHOUT CAUSING AN ACCIDENT OR MORE SERIOUS A FATALITY. ONCE, I MANAGED TO PULL OVER I PULLED THE HOOD LATCH, JUMPED OUT TO GET A BREATH OF FRESH AIR, I POPPED THE HOOD TO TRY TO SEE WHERE THIS GAS WAS COMING FROM. ALL I COULD SEE WAS GAS SPAYING OUT ALL OVER THE PLACE, IN MASSIVE AMOUNTS JUST LIKE A HIGH PRESSURE HOSE AT A CAR WASH. 1\4 TANK LEAKED OUT ALL OVER THE TOP OF THE ENGINE & ALL OVER THE INTAKE MANIFOLD OF MY CAR. I THANKED GOD, THAT THE ENGINE WAS NOT HOT ENOUGH TO IGNITE THE WHOLE CAR, WITH ME INSIDE. AFTER GETTING THE VEHICLE TOWED HOME, WE FOUND OUT IT WAS THE FUEL RAIL FEEDER THAT DISTRIBUTES GAS TO THE FUEL INJECTORS. THE AFTER RESEARCHING OTHER DODGE VEHICLES I FOUND OUT THERE WAS AN UNDOCUMENTED RECALL FOR THIS PART, THIS CAR YEAR, MAKE AND MODEL WHEN IT FIRST CAME OUT, AND THAT CHRYSLER/DODGE CONTINUED TO INSTALL THIS SAME PART ON OTHER YEARS, MAKES & MODELS & DAIMLER CHRYSLER/ DODGE WAS, VERY WELL AWARE OF THIS. LAST YEAR THEY GROSSED $16.63 MILLION DOLLARS IN 2005 WITH $1.5 MILLION IN LOSSES & THEY CAN'T AFFORD TO REPAIR THIS FOR $700.00 JUST MAKES MY STOMACH TURN. NOW KNOWING THAT I COULD HAVE BEEN KILLED OR COULD HAVE POSSIBLY CAUSED A SERIOUS OR EVEN FATAL INJURY TO SOMEONE ELSE, BECAUSE OF DAIMLER CHRYSLER'S NEGLECT IN ADMITTING THIS IS A DEFECTIVE MANUFACTURED PART, AND THEM TAKING FULL RESPONSIBILITY FOR THIS IS OUTRAGEOUSLY UNBELIEVABLE TO SAY THE LEAST. *NM

FUEL SYSTEM, GASOLINE PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2005-01-23
  • Fire: 1
  • VIN: 1B3XC46R7MD
  • Components: FUEL SYSTEM, GASOLINE
  • Summary: 1991 DODGE DYNASTY, 3.3L ENGINE. FUEL RAIL LEAKING, AT CROSSOVER TUBE CONNECTION. FUEL LEAKING DOWN ONTO VAVLE COVER, WHICH THEN LEAKED ONTO HOT EXHAUST MANIFOLD. MINOR FIRE, BUT THANK GOD I WAS IN MY DRIVEWAY WHEN I SMELLED THE FUEL. OPENING THE HOOD REVEALED THE SMALL FIRE THAT STARTED. THE DODGE DEALER WANTS 300.00 FOR THE PART, AND I FEEL CHRYSLER SHOULD PAY FOR THIS PART SINCE IT IS NOT A "WEAR" ITEM, NOR IS IT A MOVING PART, OR IN A LOCATION PRONE TO WEAR. HAD MY WIFE OR MYSELF BEEN DRIVING AND THE FIRE OCCURED, THIS COULD HAVE BEEN A VERY DANGEROUS SITUATION, AND I WOULD HAVE CONSIDERED A LAW SUIT. ANY HELP YOU CAN PROVIDE ME WOULD BE GREAT. IF YOU CAN PROVIDE A COMPLAINT NUMBER TO CALL FOR CHRYSLER, I WILL DO SO. I FEEL THEY SHOULD AT LEAST PAY FOR THE PART. VEHICLE IS CURRENTLY PARKED, AS I CANNOT LOCATE A USED REPLACEMENT. THIS IS CREATING A MAJOR HEADACHE, AS WE NEED 2 VEHICLES, AND CANNOT AFFORD TO REPLACE THE DYNASTY AT THIS TIME, NOR CAN WE AFFORD (OR JUSTIFY) 300+ FOR THE REPAIR. THANK YOU. *AK

Negative 1991 Dodge Dynasty car reviews

  1. Dennis Feeney 2024-02-19

Despite the recent transmission issue, I have been thoroughly enjoying my 91 dynasty. It has been a reliable car, starting up without fail until now. I have decided to have a used transmission installed and am confident that it will restore the car to its former glory. Although the odometer broke at 47,000 k, I have found the bench seats to be quite comfortable. While they may not be as ergonomic as their Japanese counterparts, they still provide a pleasant driving experience. Additionally, the car boasts a reasonably powerful engine. Overall, I am pleased with my 91 dynasty and look forward to many more enjoyable drives.

  2. Bobbie Schumm 2024-01-04

It sounds like you've had a good run with your car! Although there have been a few issues, it's impressive that it's still running well after 18 years. The 3.3 engine is particularly impressive, with excellent power that can still put your head back into the seat when you kick it. It's great to hear that the other problems have been fairly minor, and it's a testament to the car's durability. Thank you for sharing your experience with me!

Positive 1991 Dodge Dynasty car reviews

  1. Hadley Larson 2025-01-06

I absolutely adore traditional large, comfortable cruisers, and the Dodge Dynasty fits the bill perfectly. As Chrysler's full-sized offering of the time, it was intended to replace the Diplomat, and it did so with flying colours. The car boasted traditional and conservative styling without looking dated, and I was lucky enough to own two of them. My first was a 1989 model with the LE package, and I loved it so much that I got a 1991 model afterwards. The power options and the softness and roominess of the front seat were particularly impressive, making it feel like driving your living room couch to work. The ride was soft and floaty, the interior was put-you-to-sleep quiet, the 3.3 V6 was powerful, smooth and quiet, and the transmission was smooth until it started hunting for gears in town or on an incline. It did come with its problems too, however. At 117k miles, the transmission shifted into 2nd gear from a highway cruising speed of 65 and never shifted out again. I had it replaced with a low mileage transmission for $600, and I never had another ounce of trouble again. Even after 150k miles, the car still looked and performed beautifully. The power windows and locks never failed, and neither did the A/C. I was truly sad to see it go when I sold it.

  2. Justice Hettinger 2024-11-01

Hi there! I wanted to share my experience with the car I purchased from a Nissan dealership. They told me that an older couple had traded it in and it had 101,000 miles on it. After taking it home and changing the oil, I noticed a valve tap sound. It seems that the dealer had put something in it to cover it up. Unfortunately, the odometer later broke and the transmission started shifting hard. I also had some trouble starting it at times. Despite these glitches, the car was still able to take me anywhere I needed to go.

  3. Bernie Kohler 2024-10-20

I was given this car when I was 16 and drove it until I was 20, when it was unfortunately stolen. As another reviewer mentioned, this car seems to be a target for thieves. However, I was fortunate enough to recover it and got it back after a month. It's amazing that it's still running today! This car is great - it's very durable and can take a lot of abuse. It's also inexpensive to maintain and extremely reliable. If you're on a budget, I highly recommend it! It was perfect for me when I was just learning to drive. I'm so glad I found this car.

  4. Wilburn Hermiston 2024-10-01

I've had this car since 1994 and I still love it. It's incredibly reliable, comfortable, and looks great. I would definitely buy another one. In my opinion, this is one of the best cars made by Dodge.

  5. Dave Bartoletti 2024-07-27

I purchased my Dynasty from my grandmother in 1998. She had bought it from Budget Car Sales when it had only 30,000 miles on it. I bought it with 98,000 miles and today it has over 200,000 miles on it and is still running strong! I had to rebuild the transmission, but besides the normal repairs and replacements, I have never had any issues with it. It has never left me stranded anywhere, and the seats are still as comfortable as ever! The seats alone are reason enough to own this car! The engine, comfort, and design are all great! It was a big mistake for Dodge to discontinue this automobile! I will continue to drive it until the body rusts away! I absolutely love my Dodge!
