1991 Mercury Cougar problems
The Mercury Cougar is a series of automobiles that was sold by Mercury from 1967 to 2002. The model line is a diverse series of vehicles; though the Cougar nameplate is most commonly associated with two-door coupes, at various stages in its production, the model also was offered as a convertible and a hatchback. During its production as the mid-size Mercury line, the Cougar was also offered as a four-door sedan and five-door station wagon.
In production for 34 years across eight generations (skipping the 1998 model year), the Cougar is second only to the Grand Marquis (36 years) in the Mercury line for production longevity. 2,972,784 examples were produced, making it the highest-selling Mercury vehicle. During the 1970s and 1980s, the marketing of the Mercury division was closely associated with the Cougar, with promotional materials advertising Mercury dealers as "The Sign of the Cat" with big cats atop Lincoln-Mercury dealer signs. Cat-related nameplates were adopted by other Mercury lines, including the Bobcat and Lynx.
During its production, the Cougar was assembled at the Dearborn Assembly Plant (part of the Ford River Rouge Complex) in Dearborn, Michigan from 1967 until 1973, San Jose Assembly (Milpitas, California) from 1968 into early 1969, Lorain Assembly (Lorain, Ohio) from 1974 until 1997, and at Flat Rock Assembly (Flat Rock, Michigan) from 1999 through 2002.

Common 1991 Mercury Cougar problems
The Mercury Cougar, a popular car from the 1990s, has had its fair share of issues. This article will explore some of the most common problems with the 1991 Mercury Cougar based on complaints from owners.
One common issue with the 1991 Mercury Cougar is the charging system, specifically with the alternator. Owners have reported that their alternators will charge for a couple of minutes or half an hour, but then suddenly stop charging, causing the headlights to dim and the wipers to become sluggish. In some cases, replacing the alternator has temporarily solved the problem, but it often reoccurs. The cause of this issue could be a bad ground connection, corrosion in the battery or alternator cables, or a faulty internal voltage regulator.
Another issue is related to the battery light, which can be caused by a damaged alternator wire harness connector. This problem can lead to the battery light staying on, even when the alternator is working properly.
The 1991 Mercury Cougar has also been known to have problems with its fuel system. Some owners have reported experiencing issues with their fuel pumps, which can lead to the car stalling or having difficulty starting. In some cases, the fuel pump relay may need to be replaced.
The car's electrical system has also caused problems for some owners. Issues with the car's anti-theft system have been reported, which can prevent the car from starting if the battery voltage is low. In some cases, the car's wiring may also be faulty, leading to issues with the electrical system.
The car's brakes have also been a source of frustration for some owners. Issues with the brake lights not working, the brake switch failing, and the power steering leaking have all been reported.
The car's air conditioning system has also caused problems for some owners. Issues with the air conditioning relay, the air conditioning compressor, and the air conditioning system not blowing cold air have all been reported.
Finally, the car's transmission has also been a source of frustration for some owners. Issues with the transmission not shifting properly, the transmission not knowing what gear to be in, and the transmission just quitting while driving have all been reported.
In conclusion, the 1991 Mercury Cougar has had its fair share of issues, ranging from problems with the charging system to issues with the transmission. While some of these issues can be resolved with simple repairs, others may require more extensive work. It is important for owners to stay vigilant and address any issues as soon as they arise to prevent further damage to the car.

ENGINE AND ENGINE COOLING,SEAT BELTS PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 1999-08-18
- VIN: 1MEPM6049MH
- Components: ENGINE AND ENGINE COOLING,SEAT BELTS
- Summary: THE HEAD GASKET WENT BAD EVEN AFTER ROUTINE REGULAR MAINTENANCE AND ONLY 80,000 MILES ON THE VEHICLE. ACCORDING TO A LOCAL DEALERSHIP AND SEVERAL MECHANICS THIS IS EXTREMELY COMMON. I WAS FORTUNATE BECAUSE THE HEADS AND BLOCK WERE NOT CRACKED UNLIKE THE MAJORITY OF THE ONES THAT ARE SERVICED. IT SEEMS THAT IF THE 3.8 LITER HAS THIS PROBLEM THEN MAYBE THERE IS A DESIGN FLAW OR QUALITY PROBLEM WITH THE GASKET. THE OTHER PROBLEM IS WHEN HAVING THIS FIXED, THE STEERING PUMP FRONT GASKET USUALLY BREAKS WHEN THE BELT IS REMOVED, THIS SHOULD NOT HAPPEN. IF I HAD KNOWN ABOUT THIS DESIGN FLAW IN THIS ENGINE I WOULD HAVE NEVER PURCHASED THIS OR ANY FORD VEHICLES WITH A 3.8 LITER ENGINE. ALSO WHY DON'T THE SEAT BELTS LOCK? *AK

I absolutely adore my antique 31-year-old '1991' Mercury Cougar! Living in Philadelphia, I've had to have the rust repaired and repainted three times in its lifespan (so far), but it's still an incredibly reliable car. It's amazing how much this car can hold - I've used it to move things many times, and it's like a stunt clown car with the amount of space it has. I just love the way it looks and drives. I can't say enough good things about it! I would love to restore the whole car and make it new again, especially since the engine is still in great condition. It's a shame that cars like this aren't made anymore.

Hi there! I just wanted to share my experience with this car. I bought it from my grandpa with 108k and now have 168k. The only things I have replaced besides normal maintenance are the fuel pump and starter. While it may not be the fastest car out there with only 140 hp, the low end torque makes normal driving quite easy. City mileage is not the best, but if you drive conservatively on the highway, you can get 27-28 mpg. Winter driving can be tricky, but I found that adding one or two sandbags makes a world of difference! I have heard that the 3.8 had some head gasket issues, but luckily I haven't experienced them (although I may still have a leak because my temp gauge can be fidgety sometimes, even after changing the thermostat). Regardless, I wouldn't hesitate to drive it long distances. Let me know if you have any questions!

This car had several issues that arose after we purchased it, including problems with the stereo, power window, starting, alternator, fan, battery, spark plugs, and heater vents. Additionally, the digital display for the radio was completely burnt out. Despite the frequent oil changes, we ended up spending more money on maintenance than the initial purchase price. It is clear that this car was not in decent condition as we initially thought.

Hi there! I hope you're doing well. I wanted to ask if you could help me out with something. I recently sold my car and I was wondering if you could tell me if I got a good price for it. When I bought it, it seemed like a great vehicle, but I'm not sure if I made a good deal. Thank you so much for your help!
