The Lincoln Town Car is a model line of full-size luxury sedans that was marketed by the Lincoln division of the American automaker Ford Motor Company. Deriving its name from a limousine body style, Lincoln marketed the Town Car from 1981 to 2011, with the nameplate previously serving as the flagship trim of the Lincoln Continental. Produced across three generations for thirty model years, the Town Car was marketed directly against luxury sedans from Cadillac and Chrysler.

Marketed nearly exclusively as a four-door sedan (a two-door sedan was offered for 1981 only), many examples of the Town Car were used for fleet and livery (limousine) service. From 1983 to its 2011 discontinuation, the Town Car was the longest car produced by Ford worldwide, becoming the longest mass-production car sold in North America from 1997 to 2011. While not a direct successor of the Town Car, the Lincoln MKS would become the longest American sedan until 2016 (overtaken by the Cadillac CT6).

From 1980 until 2007, the Lincoln Town Car was assembled in Wixom, Michigan, (Wixom Assembly) alongside the Lincoln Continental, LS, and Mark VI, VII, and VIII. After Wixom's closure, Town Car production moved to Southwold, Ontario, (St. Thomas Assembly) alongside the similar Ford Crown Victoria and the Mercury Grand Marquis. The final Lincoln Town Car was produced on August 29, 2011.

Within the Lincoln model line, the Town Car was not directly replaced; the nameplate was used from 2012 to 2019 to denote livery/limousine/hearse variants of the Lincoln MKT. For 2017, the revived Continental replaced the MKS, closely matching the Town Car in wheelbase and width.

Over the last 12k miles, there have been numerous defects and mechanical problems. These include front end wobble and alignment issues, transmission shudder in third gear and overdrive, catalytic converters going bad, trim pieces falling off, and stalling and dying without warning. Despite the lack of error codes to indicate trouble, I am confident in my ability to diagnose and address these issues.

I purchased my 98 Town Car three years ago with 105,000 miles on the clock. It required a new alternator, which was expected for a 16-year-old car, but it was inexpensive to fix. Since then, I have been performing regular maintenance, including a transmission flush, and it still runs great with 118,000 miles on the clock. It has never left me stranded, and it surprisingly starts even after sitting in freezing weather for a week or more without a jump. The technology, such as heated seats and climate/stereo controls on the steering wheel, is on par with current vehicles. The window regulators are not the best, but they still work. I consider them a maintenance item for an 18-year-old car that most people would think is fairly new. Overall, if you're looking to buy a 15+ year old car, this model is a great choice, as it was manufactured with the idea that some would be used as a livery/service vehicle. If you keep up with maintenance, it will take care of you. These vehicles are inexpensive to maintain, thanks to their platform being shared with the Crown Vic.

I bought the car a year and a half ago and it rides like a dream, but unfortunately, I have experienced many problems. In the past year and a half, the window wiper motor has gone out, and my windows only work half the time (all 4 of them). Additionally, the head gasket blew, and water leaks into the back floor when it rains. There have also been many other minor problems. Let me add that I take very good care of my cars and don't beat them. Despite these issues, I would still recommend this car, but be prepared to spend some money on maintenance.

A big man needs a big car! It's a floater, but it's so comfortable!

  5. Jaydon Ankunding 2024-09-15

I've owned this car for only seven months and so far, I've had very good luck with it. I've only needed to replace normal wear and tear items, but overall it's been a great riding car. I can't complain!
