2002 Lincoln Town car problems
The Lincoln Town Car is a model line of full-size luxury sedans that was marketed by the Lincoln division of the American automaker Ford Motor Company. Deriving its name from a limousine body style, Lincoln marketed the Town Car from 1981 to 2011, with the nameplate previously serving as the flagship trim of the Lincoln Continental. Produced across three generations for thirty model years, the Town Car was marketed directly against luxury sedans from Cadillac and Chrysler.
Marketed nearly exclusively as a four-door sedan (a two-door sedan was offered for 1981 only), many examples of the Town Car were used for fleet and livery (limousine) service. From 1983 to its 2011 discontinuation, the Town Car was the longest car produced by Ford worldwide, becoming the longest mass-production car sold in North America from 1997 to 2011. While not a direct successor of the Town Car, the Lincoln MKS would become the longest American sedan until 2016 (overtaken by the Cadillac CT6).
From 1980 until 2007, the Lincoln Town Car was assembled in Wixom, Michigan, (Wixom Assembly) alongside the Lincoln Continental, LS, and Mark VI, VII, and VIII. After Wixom's closure, Town Car production moved to Southwold, Ontario, (St. Thomas Assembly) alongside the similar Ford Crown Victoria and the Mercury Grand Marquis. The final Lincoln Town Car was produced on August 29, 2011.
Within the Lincoln model line, the Town Car was not directly replaced; the nameplate was used from 2012 to 2019 to denote livery/limousine/hearse variants of the Lincoln MKT. For 2017, the revived Continental replaced the MKS, closely matching the Town Car in wheelbase and width.

AIR BAGS PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2006-06-01
- Number Of Injuries: 1
- Components: AIR BAGS
- Summary: TRAVELING AT 65 OR 70 MPH ON A CALIFORNIA HIGHWAY LAST SUMMER, THE FRONT PASSENGER SIDE AIR BAG DEPLOYED (CAUSING PAIN, BRUISING, ETC. BUT NOTHING APPARENTLY PERMANENT - NO PERSONAL INJURY CLAIM HAS EVER BEEN CONTEMPLATED). IT WAS SHOCKING IN THAT THERE WAS NO CRASH OF ANY KIND. THE PASSENGER THOUGHT THE BAG DEPLOYED FOR NO REASON. THE DRIVER, NOT BEING CERTAIN, HAD THE IMPRESSION THAT SOME OBJECT (E.G., A SMALL PIECE OF TIRE RUBBER) WAS KICKED UP AGAINST THE CAR FROM THE ROADWAY. THERE ARE NO SIGNS OF ANY IMPACT WITH ANYTHING. THE BAG TORE PART OF THE LEATHER SEAT (BEYOND THE SEAM). THIS OCCURRED NEAR THE 5 YEAR POINT RE: WARRANTY. THE MANUFACTURER, FORD MOTOR COMPANY, SEEMED RESPONSIVE AT FIRST AND ASKED THAT WE TAKE THE CAR TO THE DEALER. I DID SO, AND WAS INFORMED BY THE SERVICE DEPARTMENT THAT FORD INFORMED THEM IT WAS REFERRED TO THEIR LEGAL DEPARTMENT AND, THUS, THEY COULD NOT EVEN LOOK AT, LET ALONE REPAIR IT. THE LEGAL DEPARTMENT TOOK SEVERAL WEEKS TO ULTIMATELY SEND A LETTER STATING THEY HAD NO RESPONSIBILITY. OUR INSURANCE CARRIER IS UNCERTAIN AS TO HOW TO HANDLE THE CLAIM. THE AIR BAG SYSTEM IN THIS LINCOLN TOWN CAR IS OBVIOUSLY DEFECTIVE. IS THIS A KNOWN DEFECT WITH THIS MODEL, ETC.? WHAT RECOURSE DO WE HAVE AGAINST FORD MOTOR COMPANY FOR FAILURE TO FULFILL ITS MORAL AND LEGAL RESPONSIBILITY TO REPLACE THE AIR BAG AND REPAIR THE SEAT? IS THERE NOT A FEDERAL AGENCY THAT CAN BE HELPFUL IN SUCH MATTERS? NOTE: THE DAMAGE OCCURRED IN EARLY JUNE, 2006 (ENTERED 1ST BELOW TO ALLOW FOR TRANSMISSION OF CLAIM). *JB

I completely agree that the Town Cars are fantastic! They offer the smoothest ride on the road, have a quality interior, and boast torquey v8 power. Although fuel economy is generally about 17 in the city, it can go as high as 27 at a steady 60 MPH on the highway. Additionally, these cars are tanks and are one of the safest cars on the road. The car drives like a car from the 1960s, and has a robust, quality feel that is lacking from American cars today. In terms of reliability, I have heard that they are stellar, with only ball joints needing replacement at 121K and regular oil changes and tire replacements. It's a shame that they don't make them like this anymore!
-
This Town Car replaced a Grand Marquis and drives and rides somewhat better. It also seems to be a lot more quiet on the inside. The road noise is greatly reduced compared to the Crown Vic & Marquis. The handling, even on rough roads, is very good. Additionally, the fuel economy is great, achieving 25/20 (hwy/city) with the Ford V8. I haven't owned a Lincoln for several years, but this one is worlds ahead of the 1980's models.
-
The car is as smooth as silk and met all of my expectations. I noticed an improvement from my previous car, a 1992 Lincoln Town Car.
-
The car magazines may not fully understand this car, but it excels at a few key things: carrying people and their belongings in comfort and quietness. It may not be a Porsche, but it's a fantastic American cruiser.
-
This car became the company plane after 9/11. It has been driven for 60,000 miles, with 95% of those miles being high speed highway miles, and it has performed perfectly. The car is very comfortable, and its fuel mileage is exceptional. We selected this car after renting various makes and models for business trips to determine their comfort and suitability for long business trips. The Town Car beat all the others, and we purchased one. It proved the value of our selection process, as it was every bit as good as we expected.

Our Towncar has been with us for 3 years and it will be my retirement car. Despite our overall satisfaction with the car, we have a few concerns. We believe that a luxury car like the Lincoln should have a softer leather, as the current one is quite hard and uncomfortable on long trips. Additionally, we have noticed that the car has a mushy ride and tends to float on corners, which can be disconcerting. In comparison, my previous Thunderbird with 258K miles had a handling package that made me feel in control of the car. I drive a pickup for 35000 miles a year and feel safer with its handling than the Lincoln's. We have also experienced some intermittent electrical issues. Nonetheless, we still hold the car in high regard.

The car has been in the shop five times in a year for the same issue, but unfortunately, the problem has not yet been identified. Due to this, our vacation plans have been postponed. The car tends to float on the road and is difficult to control, especially at speeds above 60 mph. However, it drives well at speeds of 59 mph or below.

Hi there! I hope you're doing well. I wanted to share my experience with my 3rd TC. I've driven my last two ('84 & '92) for over 150,000 miles each! On highway trips, I get great gas mileage of 27-28MPG, which is fantastic. However, I do miss the power that I get from my '95 Crown Vic with the performance and handling package (3.27 rear end and dual exhaust on the same 4.6 engine-- that I am still driving with 184,000 miles on the original engine and trans!). I have noticed that the steering can be a bit numb on the highway, and the car tends to wander a bit on Michelin Symmetry radials. Personally, I preferred the ride on my '92 TC and my '95 Crown Vic. That being said, the local dealerships have been great at fixing any problems that I've had, and it is a nice looking car. However, I don't think I'll be driving it as long as my other two, or my Ford. Thanks for listening!
