1999 Lincoln Town car problems

The Lincoln Town Car is a model line of full-size luxury sedans that was marketed by the Lincoln division of the American automaker Ford Motor Company. Deriving its name from a limousine body style, Lincoln marketed the Town Car from 1981 to 2011, with the nameplate previously serving as the flagship trim of the Lincoln Continental. Produced across three generations for thirty model years, the Town Car was marketed directly against luxury sedans from Cadillac and Chrysler.

Marketed nearly exclusively as a four-door sedan (a two-door sedan was offered for 1981 only), many examples of the Town Car were used for fleet and livery (limousine) service. From 1983 to its 2011 discontinuation, the Town Car was the longest car produced by Ford worldwide, becoming the longest mass-production car sold in North America from 1997 to 2011. While not a direct successor of the Town Car, the Lincoln MKS would become the longest American sedan until 2016 (overtaken by the Cadillac CT6).

From 1980 until 2007, the Lincoln Town Car was assembled in Wixom, Michigan, (Wixom Assembly) alongside the Lincoln Continental, LS, and Mark VI, VII, and VIII. After Wixom's closure, Town Car production moved to Southwold, Ontario, (St. Thomas Assembly) alongside the similar Ford Crown Victoria and the Mercury Grand Marquis. The final Lincoln Town Car was produced on August 29, 2011.

Within the Lincoln model line, the Town Car was not directly replaced; the nameplate was used from 2012 to 2019 to denote livery/limousine/hearse variants of the Lincoln MKT. For 2017, the revived Continental replaced the MKS, closely matching the Town Car in wheelbase and width.

AT ONE TIME THERE WAS A VERY UNDER-PUBLISHED LAWSUIT ENABLING OWNERS WHO HAD ALREADY FIXED THIS DEFICIENCY A $700+ REBATE BUT THE OFFER WAS ONLY FOR A SHORT PERIOD OF TIME. APPARENTLY THE FORMER OWNER OF MY LINCOLN TOWN CAR KNEW NOTHING ABOUT THIS OPPORTUNITY AND PROBLEM WAS DIAGNOSED 2 YEARS AGO. PREVIOUS OWNER THOUGHT IT WAS NO BIG DEAL. TODAY MANY FORD OWNERS HAVE BEEN LEFT HOLDING THE BAG FOR THIS EXPENSIVE AND SOMETIMES ENGINE DAMAGING REPAIR WHEN THEY REPORTEDLY KNEW ABOUT THE DEFECT AND CONTINUED SELLING THE CARS. COOLANT CONSTANTLY LEAKS OUT CAUSING POSSIBLE ENGINE DAMAGE AS WELL AS RISK OF OVERHEATING IF COOLANT ISN'T CONSTANTLY ADDED. REPAIR IS APPROXIMATELY $800-$1000. MANY FORDS HAVE BEEN AFFECTED.

Negative 1999 Lincoln Town car car reviews

  1. Gust Tromp 2024-08-18

During my first week with this car, I was driving at 80 mph on the highway when one of the front wheels buckled, causing the car to come to a sudden stop. Unfortunately, the dealers had the car for four weeks trying to diagnose the issue, and as soon as it was fixed, the other wheel went out. Overall, I have found this car to be an uncomfortable and unreliable ride. Additionally, I had to pay $400 for a tail light after being backed into one day. Despite these issues, I hope to find a better car in the future.

  2. Cary Stracke 2024-07-28

I have experienced some issues with the service and seating arrangements, which have unfortunately caused me discomfort. Additionally, I have encountered some problems with the car itself.

Since the transmission only lasts about 3 years and 40,000 miles, it can take a good week and a half to have it rebuilt at the dealership. Fortunately, the car is still under factory warranty! Also, the leather-wrapped steering wheel may not last long. It's disappointing that luxury cars come with donut spare tires instead of full-sized ones. While BMW, Mercedes, Lexus, and Volvo may cost a little bit more, they are worth the investment. Please avoid buying a Town Car!

It seemed great at the dealership, but as soon as I got it home, I realized that it was way too small in the front seating areas. The stereo is the worst I've ever had in a car, and the materials used are really cheap. Additionally, the clear coat seems to have rubbed off. Overall, I'm really disappointed with this car. I've owned two Town Cars in the past (1985 and 1992), and they were much better than this one. I can't wait until my lease is up. I'm definitely going for a Caddy DTS next time!

Positive 1999 Lincoln Town car car reviews

  1. Elias Larkin 2024-11-23

This is the most comfortable car we have ever owned. It has a very sharp look with a fake convertible top. We are selling it because my husband passed away.

  2. Dillon Berge 2024-11-18

The car I drove was incredibly relaxing and perfect for long highway trips.

  3. Felipe Batz 2024-11-17

This is the best car I've ever had! I get 30mpg on the highway if I keep my speed around 65-68. Its quick maneuvering has gotten me out of several bad spots, which really surprised me due to its size. I've always felt safe in it, even though I'm starting to have a few problems now due to its age. They're nothing big though. I would have liked sturdier bumpers, and the airflow in the front windows is somewhat odd. But overall, I plan to drive it until it falls apart on the road and then I'll walk away from it. It breaks my heart that I'll never be able to afford another one! I wish I'd gotten two when I had the money and put one up!

I hope you're doing well! I wanted to share my experience with my car. I bought it brand new and only drive about 8000 miles per year. So far, it has 34000 miles and I'm happy to say that it has given me no problems at all. The mileage on the road is excellent and the power is more than adequate. Recently, I took a 1900 mile trip with 4 people and we were all very comfortable. Plus, we got an average gas mileage of 25 mpg, which is 100 passenger mpg (at 75 mph).

  5. Chase Schaden 2024-10-12

This is the first TC I have owned and I really like it. I enjoy the ride over the road, especially with the Touring Pkg. The cabin and trunk are both very roomy, although the low trunk floor can make it difficult to get the luggage out. The stereo is okay, but could be improved. The integrated phone is not great either, especially the hands-free functions.
