The Lincoln Town Car is a model line of full-size luxury sedans that was marketed by the Lincoln division of the American automaker Ford Motor Company. Deriving its name from a limousine body style, Lincoln marketed the Town Car from 1981 to 2011, with the nameplate previously serving as the flagship trim of the Lincoln Continental. Produced across three generations for thirty model years, the Town Car was marketed directly against luxury sedans from Cadillac and Chrysler.

Marketed nearly exclusively as a four-door sedan (a two-door sedan was offered for 1981 only), many examples of the Town Car were used for fleet and livery (limousine) service. From 1983 to its 2011 discontinuation, the Town Car was the longest car produced by Ford worldwide, becoming the longest mass-production car sold in North America from 1997 to 2011. While not a direct successor of the Town Car, the Lincoln MKS would become the longest American sedan until 2016 (overtaken by the Cadillac CT6).

From 1980 until 2007, the Lincoln Town Car was assembled in Wixom, Michigan, (Wixom Assembly) alongside the Lincoln Continental, LS, and Mark VI, VII, and VIII. After Wixom's closure, Town Car production moved to Southwold, Ontario, (St. Thomas Assembly) alongside the similar Ford Crown Victoria and the Mercury Grand Marquis. The final Lincoln Town Car was produced on August 29, 2011.

Within the Lincoln model line, the Town Car was not directly replaced; the nameplate was used from 2012 to 2019 to denote livery/limousine/hearse variants of the Lincoln MKT. For 2017, the revived Continental replaced the MKS, closely matching the Town Car in wheelbase and width.

Common 2003 Lincoln Town car problems

The Lincoln Town Car, a luxury vehicle produced by Ford, has been known for its spacious interior, smooth ride, and powerful V8 engine. However, the 2003 model year has been associated with several common problems, primarily related to the rear axle, air conditioning system, and engine.

  • Air Conditioning (A/C) Problems: The A/C system in the 2003 Lincoln Town Car can experience issues that may lead to total component failure without warning. Some owners have reported sudden breakdowns, while others have noticed abnormal smells before failure. These problems can be caused by various factors, including faulty components or multiple technical service bulletins (TSBs). If you notice any issues with your Town Car's A/C, it is crucial to address them promptly to avoid further damage and potential health risks.
  • Engine Problems: The 2003 Lincoln Town Car has been reported to have engine problems, with the 1999 model year being the worst for this issue. The most common problem is a cracked intake manifold, which can lead to engine failure and costly repairs. While the 2003 model year does not have as many overall complaints as the 1999 model, engine problems are still a significant concern for owners. Regular maintenance and prompt attention to any engine issues can help prevent more severe problems and costly repairs.

In summary, the 2003 Lincoln Town Car has been associated with several common problems, primarily related to the rear axle, air conditioning system, and engine. While these issues can be frustrating and potentially expensive to address, prompt attention and regular maintenance can help prevent more severe problems and extend the vehicle's lifespan. If you own a 2003 Lincoln Town Car, it is essential to be aware of these common problems and take the necessary steps to address them promptly.

Negative 2003 Lincoln Town car car reviews

  1. Cale Nolan 2024-11-03

Hello potential buyers, I wanted to bring to your attention a couple of things to consider before making your purchase. If possible, please ask to see Special Service Message 16990. It is important to note that the air conditioning may have a significant decrease in cooling capacity at highway speeds, which can be very uncomfortable. I personally experienced sweating at highway speeds. Unfortunately, Lincoln does not have a fix for this issue at the moment. Additionally, there is a mysterious noise behind the dash on the driver's side that Lincoln has been unable to repair in my case. Thank you for taking the time to consider these factors before making your decision.

  2. Garrett Bruen 2024-09-08

With 21 years and 400K miles driving Lincolns, I loved them and bought the '03. More annoying issues with this car than I've had in 20 years. Vibration at idle is built-in and can't be corrected. Compared to older Lincolns, the car has poor acceleration from low RPMs with poorer gas mileage and a smaller gas tank.Contrary to the manual-duplicated pages-doesn't have DSP.Left out an AM filter so the AM reception was a return to the '50s. With a fix, dash now rattles. Gas tank cover wouldn't open. Lincoln won't communicate. Comparing features, Lincoln designers have done next to nothing in 10 years. I take that back--they took the quality out.

  3. Spencer Hintz 2024-07-20

This is my third and last Lincoln. While I have had some issues with the quality, I believe it is still a decent car. However, I have noticed some wind noise around the front windows/doors and engine noise that can be bothersome. Additionally, I have found that the car lacks power for its size and the gas mileage is not great. I have also experienced some difficulty with the A/C keeping occupants cool when the outside temperature is over 80.

  4. Ruben Pollich 2024-05-23

Still underpowered but better than before. Although it does not have the interior conveniences of the Continental, it has plenty of room. Unfortunately, it lacks individual armrests that move with the seats, and the power point is located on the bottom of the dash rather than being hidden. Additionally, there is no handy sunglasses or tissue compartment. However, it is only a week old and has potential. While it may not be as fun to drive as the Continental, it still has a lot to offer. It's worth noting that the 2003 design is better.

  5. Abelardo Beier 2024-04-28

I had a nightmare with one American car and swore I would never own another. Unfortunately, I didn't stick to my word and bought a used car that was only two years old. After three months and 60,000 miles, I had to replace the rear axle for $1250.00. Then, at 65,000 miles, I had to spend $600.00 to replace the hub bearings. Finally, at 70,000 miles, I had to pay $400 to repair the automatic trunk mechanism. The electrical system is failing, and all the fancy gizmos either don't work anymore or only work intermittently. Needless to say, I'm getting rid of this car. However, I'm excited to say goodbye to the Lincoln Towncar and hello to Honda! Our other car, a Honda, has been going strong for 265,000 miles with very little money spent!

Positive 2003 Lincoln Town car car reviews

  1. Brent O'Reilly 2024-11-26

This is my second TC. My first was a 1997 model. Both produced a smooth and comfortable ride, especially on long trips. I also use the car for long work trips each week, sometimes up to 100 miles. Although the style may be considered dated, the car has so many positive features, such as good gas mileage for a large car, a cavernous trunk, an easy-to-read dash display, automatic climate control, a back-up sensor, heated seats, and more. Although small problems may crop up now and then, it is to be expected with so many luxury features available. Additionally, the car has been around for a while, so it is understandable that things may break.

  2. Edison Paucek 2024-11-06

I recently bought a car from a dealer and unfortunately paid more than I should have, as I didn't do my research beforehand. However, I was pleasantly surprised to find a car that was almost identical to my previous Lincoln Town Car, except for the color and the addition of a sunroof. It had 92000 miles on it, and based on my experience with my previous car, I'm confident that this one will last me a long time. Overall, I'm very happy with my purchase, despite the high price. The only issue I've encountered is that the park assist only seems to work when it's raining.

  3. Mohammad Grady 2024-11-02

We've only had our TC for a few weeks, but let me tell you, we love it! We traded in a 2000 Crown Vic, and it has exceeded our expectations. I love everything about the car. I believe it has every available option on the Signature, and I'm glad we didn't buy a Deville. If you want a car that will make your wife happy or just an excellent automobile for your family, you've got to get one of these!

I've been fortunate enough to own 6 S Class MBs during my time living in Asia and Europe. However, my most recent S320 diesel had to be taken back to the dealer 13 times. Since moving to the USA, I've purchased my second Town Car and it's been a great experience. It has good gas mileage and is reasonably reliable. The 2003 redesign is a job well done, as it rides better than an S Class and is just as quiet. It may not be as agile when it comes to corners, but I do appreciate the 2 speedos, especially when I travel to Toronto and need to switch to kmh. Overall, I'm quite pleased with my purchase.
