2003 Buick Rendezvous problems
The Buick Rendezvous is a mid-size crossover SUV that was sold by Buick for the 2002–2007 model years. Introduced in the spring of 2001, the Buick Rendezvous and its corporate cousin, the Pontiac Aztek, were GM's first entries into the crossover SUV segment. The Rendezvous featured a four-speed automatic transmission with a V6 engine and optional all-wheel-drive (Versatrak). The SUV used the same platform as GM's short-wheelbase minivans, the Chevrolet Venture and Pontiac Montana. The Rendezvous provided a passenger- and load-carrying capacity not seen in the Buick lineup since the discontinuation of the Buick Roadmaster Estate station wagon in 1996.
Technology and notable features
It was Buick's first truck in its lineup since 1923, and the Rendezvous was billed as a combination of the best attributes of a minivan (large cargo capacity, seating for up to seven), a luxury automobile (ride, handling, smoothness) and a sport utility vehicle (truck styling and available all wheel drive).
The Rendezvous was produced at General Motors' Ramos Arizpe, Mexico assembly plant, where it shared an assembly line with the Pontiac Aztek. Like the Pontiac Aztek, the Buick Rendezvous is based on a shortened version of GM's second generation U platform minivans. In lieu of four-wheel drive, the Rendezvous offered Versatrak, a full-time, fully automatic all-wheel drive system which provided sure-footed traction in inclement weather and could handle moderate off-road surfaces.
Buick benchmarked their Park Avenue sedan as the prototypical target for ride and handling for the Rendezvous. In order to provide a luxurious and responsive car-like ride, all Rendezvous came equipped with a fully independent rear suspension system regardless of optional content or trim level.
The Rendezvous' instrument cluster detailing featured teal illuminated needles and numbers set in a silver face accented by chrome trim rings that was meant to evoke the luxurious look and feel of an expensive watch or designer bracelet. On the uplevel CXL model, a driver information center on the instrument panel provided the outside temperature, compass functions, a trip computer that included readings of fuel economy, range and fuel used. An optional second generation heads-up display was also available. This was also available in the CX model. An optional tire inflation monitoring system provided readings of tire pressure and warned if out of the specified range.
The Rendezvous boasted the ability to carry seven passengers when equipped with a third-row bench, a class-leading feature that Buick brought to market before its competitors, and was able to carry within its interior a standard 4 x 8' sheet of plywood.
In support of the Rendezvous' intended role as a versatile accoutrement for busy people with families, it provided a center console with storage space and power points for a laptop computer as well as a separate spots to hold a purse, a cell phone, pager or other small items that the owner would want to keep organized and readily accessible as well as an optional rear cargo organizer system and rear seat stereo system controls with headsets.

Common 2003 Buick Rendezvous problems
The 2003 Buick Rendezvous has been reported to have several common problems, including issues with cooling fans, fuel problems, and various electrical gadgets and gizmos.
One of the most frequently reported problems is related to the cooling fans on the radiator. The fans will stop working even when the car is hot and needs them, unless the air conditioning is on. This issue might be caused by a bad relay, as there are three relays that operate the two fans in the relay box under the hood. If the fans run in stages controlled by the relays, it is necessary to test the relays to find which one is not functioning properly.
Another common issue reported by owners is a fuel problem. Some have experienced issues with the back windows falling off the track, the rear hatch ajar light staying on, and the fuel gauge not working correctly. These issues might require mechanical repairs, and it is recommended to keep up with recall notices and regular maintenance to avoid such problems.
Additionally, the 2003 Buick Rendezvous may experience problems with electrical gadgets and gizmos, such as ignition switch, door lock control, window controls, sunroof motor, radio/entertainment package, dashboard switches, and other electrical components. These issues might start causing minor problems as the car ages, and it is recommended to replace coolant more often and maintain the car regularly to mitigate these issues.
While the 2003 Buick Rendezvous has been reported to have several common problems, it is still a reliable and comfortable family vehicle with good gas mileage, roomy cargo space, and a comfortable ride. Regular maintenance and keeping up with recall notices can help prevent these issues and ensure the longevity of the vehicle.

AIR BAGS PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2019-05-08
- VIN: 3g5db03e53s
- Components: AIR BAGS
- Summary: The gas gage has been off since I bought it in September 2018. I run out of gas right before 1/4 of a tank and when I fill it it goes about 1/4 over the full line. The passenger seat side airbag went off closing the door May 2019.
FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2021-01-18
- VIN: 3G5DB03E43S
- Components: FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM
- Summary: After filling the fuel tank there is a strong gas odor that is present until the tank is almost empty. When walking around the vehicle or loading/unloading the vehicle, the strong gas odor is always present. This vehicle was at a dealership and they took it to the local personal auction company where i bid on it and bought it along with household items.
FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2015-05-12
- VIN: 3G5DA03E43S
- Components: FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM
- Summary: I purchased this vehicle in 2013, and a few years later, I began smelling gas. After doing my due diligence, I found out that there is a recall for this issue, because the check inlet valve at the top of the tank where the filler neck connects to the tank is cracked. Great, NO, only CERTAIN Rendezvous were covered, and even though mine has the exact same issue, they refuse to cover it and replace the tank. Well, apparently, there were SO MANY complaints by other Rendezvous owners that were also not "included" in the recall, the recall was expanded to ALL Rendezvous', BUT with the stipulation that it had to have less than 150,000 miles on it, which by THAT TIME, my car WAS over that mileage. So now I'm still driving with gas leaking out of my car, A KNOWN AND ADMITTEDLY UNSAFE DEFECT, because just to purchase that gas tank is over $1,000, not including the labor to drop the tank and replace it, approximately 3-4 hours labor. My disability check cannot afford that, so I have been FORCED to continue driving an unsafe car because they are refusing to repair THEIR DEFECT. And I'm not the only one. I've seen NUMEROUS videos of mechanic's shops BEGGING GM to cover this. And I take my grandchildren to school in this car. At least if the car does blow up one day because they wont' fix THEIR OWN SAFETY issue, I'll have ONE more record of trying to get it fixed and the request being ignored. I'm putting all this information in a file that will go to my daughter and attorney, as well as anyone else's attorney that is injured or killed because of not being repaired. All I was is to drive a car with gas not leaking out of my tank as I drive. I cover ALL the other repairs that it needs. I don't think this is too much to ask, especially since it won't cost the dealership anywhere near $1500 to fix, and any price would be far less than it will cost GM in a wrongful death suit.
FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2017-02-07
- VIN: 3G5DA03E43S
- Components: FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM
- Summary: HAVE BEEN TOLD BY SEVERAL DIFFERENT MECHANICS THAT FUEL IS LEAKING WHERE THE FUEL FILLER NECK CONNECTS TO THE PLASTIC GAS TANK AT THE CHECK INLET VALVE. I'VE SEEN MANY, MANY COMPLAINTS OF THIS SAME ISSUE FROM OTHER RENDEZVOUS OWNERS, AS WELL AS THE SAME PROBLEM OF GM AND/OR BUICK REFUSING TO REPAIR THE VEHICLE, EVEN THOUGH IT IS A SAFETY ISSUE, (POSSIBLE FUEL IGNITION OUTSIDE OF THE ENGINE USUALLY IS). I LIVE OFF A VERY MODEST DISABILITY CHECK AND A NEW TANK IS OVER $1,000, NOT INCLUDING ANOTHER 4-5 HOURS OF LABOR. THAT'S MORE THAN I GET IN A MONTH. GM NEEDS TO STEP UP AND HONOR THE RECALL AND FIX THESE VEHICLES. IT'S COMPLETE BS THAT THEY ARE LIMITING IT TO VEHICLES WITH LESS THAN 150,000 MILES ON THEM. AND MY VEHICLE HAD LESS THAN THAT THE FIRST TIME I CONTACTED GM ABOUT THIS, BUT THAT WAS BEFORE THEY SO GRACIOUSLY EXTENDED THE WARRANTY TO ALL RENDEZVOUS' WITH THIS ISSUE, BUT ADDING THE MILEAGE RESTRICTION EFFECTIVELY ELIMINATING ANY OTHER VEHICLES ACTUALLY QUALIFYING TO BE REPAIRED. I BOUGHT THIS VEHICLE IN 2013, AND IT HAS ALWAYS BEEN LEGALLY REGISTERED, BUT I NEVER RECEIVED ANY COMMUNICATIONS FROM GM ABOUT THIS RECALL. THAT, AND THE REFUSAL TO REPAIR A RECALL SAFETY ISSUE, IS, OR SHOULD BE CRIMINALLY NEGLIGENT.I REALLY FEEL LIKE A CLASS ACTION LAWSUIT IS WHAT WILL HAVE TO HAPPEN. MAYBE SINCE I HAVE SO MUCH TIME ON MY HANDS, THAT IS SOMETHING I SHOULD LOOK INTO.
FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2020-11-10
- VIN: 3G5DA03E23S
- Components: FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM
- Summary: OUR RENDEVOUZ PLASTIC FUEL TANK STARTED SEEPING FUEL AT THE FILLER NECK YESTERDAY. AFTER DOING SOME READING, I SAW THERE WAS A RECALL AND THEN A SPECIAL COVERAGE ADJUSTMENT. THE ONE LISTED ON JULY 21, 2008 SAID THE TANK WOULD BE REPLACED REGARDLESS OF AGE AND MILEAGE. THEN, GM CHANGED THEIR MIND ON AUGUST 8, 2008 AND LIMITED MILEAGE AND AGE TO 150,000 MILES AND 10 YEARS. I AM VERY DISTURBED ABOUT THIS AND THINK THAT THIS TANK NEEDS REPLACED FOR SAFETY REASONS AT MINIMUM. THE FUEL TANK IS NOT AVAILABLE FROM ANY AFTERMARKET SOURCE AND PURCHASING IT FROM GM IS $1590. I CANNOT BELIEVE THAT PURCHASING A USED TANK WOULD BE SAFE DUE TO THE ISSUE GM HAS MENTIONED.

THIS IS A SUBJECT OF RECALL BUT DATE OF RECALL IS TOO OLD FOR GM TO HONOR THE RECALL. HAVE BEEN TOLD THAT THE FUEL TANK HAS TO BE REPLACED.

Ideal choice for us. We moved during the past year and Rendevous was excellent for hauling many items, including trailering a golf cart 600 miles. We really enjoy the vehicle. It's comfortable to travel in and handles mountains okay.

I've owned this Rendez-vous for 3 years now, having bought it used with 75000kms on the clock. Unfortunately, it has required frequent visits to the mechanic. In fact, I sometimes joke that he should be making my payments! Two months before the warranty expired, the differential had to be replaced with a used one, which subsequently failed. Needless to say, I was not impressed. Additionally, all four tires wore out within a year, the ABS light is always on, the fuel gauge doesn't work, and the all-wheel drive or traction light is constantly illuminated. With two years left to pay on it, I think it's time to consider trading it in. What do you think?

This vehicle has had some issues, ranging from annoying to downright dangerous. While newer versions have corrected some of these problems, some of the more serious ones still remain, such as premature wheel hub failures, faulty wiring, and bad transmissions. If you are considering purchasing one, it may be wise to invest in an extended warranty and towing insurance, just in case.

In January 07, my husband and I purchased this vehicle. Unfortunately, by July 07, we experienced some serious issues. The Security light kept coming on, and we were initially told it was a battery problem. However, we decided to have the vehicle diagnostics checked out, which turned out to be costly. We then had to replace the battery. Additionally, the window went down and wouldn't go back up, which cost us $430 to get the regulator replaced. After researching the Rendezvous, we discovered that the windows are a common and expensive problem. Furthermore, we found that the driver's seat lacks sufficient room, and the seatbelts are not spacious enough. Lastly, the radio keeps changing stations. We have been extremely disappointed with our experience so far, and we hope that this SUV will not end up costing us a fortune.

We bought this car used at 38,000 miles from someone who was smart enough to sell it before it started having issues. We had to replace the front wheel bearings at 42,000 and 45,000 miles, and the head gasket was replaced last month at 83,000 miles after the dealer misdiagnosed the problem twice. At 75,000 miles, the load leveler wouldn't stop running, so we pulled the fuse and replaced it to stop the noise. The dealer advised us that if we didn't fix it, the rear air-filled shocks would fail. We've already spent too much money replacing things too soon. We recently had to replace the rear wheel bearings (those sealed bearings are not designed well!). Unfortunately, it's currently at the dealer again for other problems. We regret buying this car and won't be buying any more GMs.

I purchased this vehicle with 35,000 miles on it. Although it was satisfactory for the first year, it has since required frequent repairs, with costs ranging from $300 to over $1000 each time. As a result, I have decided to part ways with this car and am unlikely to consider purchasing another Buick in the near future.
