Lincoln Town car 1991 problems
The Lincoln Town Car is a model line of full-size luxury sedans that was marketed by the Lincoln division of the American automaker Ford Motor Company. Deriving its name from a limousine body style, Lincoln marketed the Town Car from 1981 to 2011, with the nameplate previously serving as the flagship trim of the Lincoln Continental. Produced across three generations for thirty model years, the Town Car was marketed directly against luxury sedans from Cadillac and Chrysler.
Marketed nearly exclusively as a four-door sedan (a two-door sedan was offered for 1981 only), many examples of the Town Car were used for fleet and livery (limousine) service. From 1983 to its 2011 discontinuation, the Town Car was the longest car produced by Ford worldwide, becoming the longest mass-production car sold in North America from 1997 to 2011. While not a direct successor of the Town Car, the Lincoln MKS would become the longest American sedan until 2016 (overtaken by the Cadillac CT6).
From 1980 until 2007, the Lincoln Town Car was assembled in Wixom, Michigan, (Wixom Assembly) alongside the Lincoln Continental, LS, and Mark VI, VII, and VIII. After Wixom's closure, Town Car production moved to Southwold, Ontario, (St. Thomas Assembly) alongside the similar Ford Crown Victoria and the Mercury Grand Marquis. The final Lincoln Town Car was produced on August 29, 2011.
Within the Lincoln model line, the Town Car was not directly replaced; the nameplate was used from 2012 to 2019 to denote livery/limousine/hearse variants of the Lincoln MKT. For 2017, the revived Continental replaced the MKS, closely matching the Town Car in wheelbase and width.

Common Lincoln Town car 1991 problems
The 1991 Lincoln Town Car is known for several common problems, including air leaks, coolant leaks, blown-out spark plugs, and vehicle control issues.
Air leaks are a prevalent issue in the Lincoln Town Car, particularly in the air suspension struts. These leaks can lead to compressor failure, causing the car to sag or ride low. The air suspension system is designed to provide a smooth and comfortable ride, but when it fails, it can result in a bumpy and unpleasant driving experience.
Coolant leaks are another common problem in the Lincoln Town Car. These leaks can occur in various parts of the car's cooling system, such as the radiator, water pump, or hoses. Coolant leaks can cause the engine to overheat, potentially leading to severe damage if left unaddressed. It is essential to regularly check the coolant level and look for any signs of leaks, such as puddles under the car or a sweet smell of antifreeze.
Blown-out spark plugs are also a common issue in the Lincoln Town Car. This problem can be caused by various factors, such as engine misfires, faulty ignition coils, or worn-out spark plugs. Blown-out spark plugs can cause a decrease in engine performance, reduced fuel efficiency, and increased emissions. It is essential to regularly check the spark plugs and replace them as needed to ensure optimal engine performance.
Vehicle control issues are one of the most dangerous problems in the Lincoln Town Car, particularly in the 2003 model. These issues can cause the car to unexpectedly jerk or accelerate, potentially leading to accidents. Some owners have reported that their Town Cars sped up when they stepped on the brakes, and in some cases, the brakes failed to stop the car, resulting in crashes. These vehicle control problems usually occur around 54,400 miles, and if you notice any signs of these issues, it is crucial to consult a mechanic immediately to avoid accidents.
In summary, the 1991 Lincoln Town Car is known for several common problems, including air leaks, coolant leaks, blown-out spark plugs, and vehicle control issues. Regular maintenance and checks can help prevent these problems and ensure a safe and comfortable driving experience.

Although remaining Lincoln's top-selling model, calendar-year sales declined each year for the Town Car between 1986 and 1989. This decline was mostly blamed on its aging design and the increased popularity of the Continental which had been fully redesigned for 1988.

THE DAMAGES AND SERVICE CHARGES ARE ESTIMATED TO BE MORE THAN SIX HUNDRED DOLLARS. INITIALLY, THE SERVICE REPAIRMAN AT THE TIRE STORE (WHERE ALL OF THE TIRES WERE PURCHASED AND MOUNTED) INDICATED THAT ALL FOUR TIRES NEEDED TO BE REPLACED BECAUSE THEY SHOWED SIGNS OF "DRY-ROT." - VIN: 1LNCM81WXMY
- Components: SERVICE BRAKES, HYDRAULIC
- Summary: DT: THE CONTACT STATED 1991 LINCOLN TOWN CAR HAD ONLY 17,000 MILES ON IT. ON 8-25-05 HE FELT LIKE HIS BRAKES WERE LOW. HE WENT TO HAVE THEM INSPECTED AND THE CAR PASSED THE INSPECTION, BUT HE HAD THE BRAKES CHANGED ANYWAY. HE SMELLED THE BRAKES BURNING THAT DAY AS HE WAS DRIVING HOME FROM THE GARAGE. HE PARKED THE CAR IN THE GARAGE ,AND DID NOT DRIVE THE CAR UNTIL ABOUT A MONTH LATER WHEN HE SMELLED WHAT HE THOUGHT WAS THE BRAKES BURNING AGAIN. WHEN HE GOT IN TO DRIVEWAY, HE SAW FIRE UNDER THE WHEELS. HE PUT THE FIRE OUT WITH A FIRE EXTINGUISHER. HAD HE NOT HAD THE FIRE EXTINGUISHER THE CAR WOULD HAVE BLOWN UP. THE GARAGE THAT FIXED THE BRAKES SAID THE CALIPER HUNG UP AND THAT WAS WHY THE FIRE HAPPENED. ALSO, THE CONSUMER THOUGHT THIS MAY BE A DEFECT IN THE DESIGN OF THE BRAKES THAT WOULD CAUSE THE CAR TO CATCH ON FIRE OR DID NOT FIX THE BRAKES PROPERLY. HE CALLED FORD, AND THEY TOLD HIM THAT WITHOUT A WARRANTY THEY DID NOT KNOW WHAT THEY COULD DO, AND THEN THEY TOLD HIM THEY WOULD SUBMIT HIS COMPLAINT TO THE ENGINEERING DEPARTMENT. THE CONTACT WAS NOT SURE IF THE CAR HAD ABS BRAKES BECAUSE THE CAR WAS A 1991 MODEL. HE THOUGHT IT DID BUT WAS NOT SURE. HE WAS THE ORIGINAL OWNER OF THE CAR. *AK

ENGINE AND ENGINE COOLING PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2005-06-06
- VIN: 1LNCM81WXMY
- Components: ENGINE AND ENGINE COOLING
- Summary: I HAVE HAD PROBLEMS WITH GETTING THIS CAR (1991 LINCOLN TOWN CAR) THROUGH INSPECTION OVER THE LAST 3 YEARS, DUE TO SMOKING BECAUSE OF EMISSIONS PROBLEMS. THE CAR HAD LESS THAN 100,000 MILES ON IT WHEN THIS PROBLEM STARTED, AND NOW HAS APPROXIMATELY 119,000 MILES ON IT. THIS YEAR, I HAVE MADE 4 ATTEMPTS TO GET THE CAR TO PASS THE INSPECTION, HOWEVER IT HAS FAILED DUE TO THE SAME PROBLEM EACH TIME. I HAVE TAKEN THE CAR TO MECHANICS, AND HAVE BEEN TOLD THAT THIS IS A MANUFACTURERS' DEFECT WITH THESE PARTICULAR CARS. THEY STATE THAT THE VALVE SEALS GET HARD BECAUSE OF A FACTORY DEFECT AND NEED TO BE REPLACED. HARDENED VALVE SEALS ALLOW OIL TO BY-PASS THE VALVE SEALS AND CAUSE THE CARS TO SMOKE. I FEEL THAT THE MANUFACTURER SHOULD REPLACE THE VALVE SEALS IN MY CAR, AND CORRECT THIS PROBLEM. I WOULD LIKE TO KEEP THIS CAR, IF YOU CAN PLEASE STOP THE SMOKING, IT IS A GOOD CAR! THANK YOU VERY MUCH.

142800 miles runs like 20,000. The 5.0 engine is great.
-
It's great to hear that your car is still running well! You're so close to hitting 300,000 miles by next year, that's amazing! The engine sounds like it's in great shape and it's impressive that you're still getting 21 miles per gallon despite the engine size. I understand your hesitation in buying another used car due to uncertainty about maintenance, but it's great that this one is still worth keeping around until it dies.

I really adore this car! I purchased it from my mother-in-law who was looking to upgrade to a new Honda Pilot. Although she didn't like the Pilot, I absolutely love the TC. It provides a smooth ride and even my 6'6

I've had this car for a year and a half now. When I bought it, it had 140K on it and cost me around $2300. Since then, I've put 34K on it and invested around $3K in maintenance. Unfortunately, the air suspension and fuel pump needed replacing right after I bought it, and the dealer charged me a lot for the repairs. However, I've found a small shop that I go to now. Over time, I've had to replace the AC clutch, water pump, evaporator core, and condenser on the AC, and I even converted it to R134 coolant. Just last week, the driver's power window and the AC (probably the compressor) stopped working. I really love this car and don't want to give it up, but with all these repairs adding up, it's becoming difficult. Nonetheless, it's still been more affordable than buying even the cheapest new car.

I found the perfect car that met all my requirements - roomy enough for my grandkids, great ride, and fuel efficient. This car has it all! The air bags provide a super smooth ride and the car returns an impressive 22 mpg. Although it's not a sports car, it's a luxurious ride that's perfect for me. I absolutely love the retro interior and the leather-cloth combo is a nice touch. As someone who knows Ford products well, I'm not worried about repairs when they come up. Plus, the air springs are affordable to replace at around $100 a pair. This car is incredibly quiet and an all-around great buy. If you're looking to treat yourself without breaking the bank, I highly recommend this car. However, if you're looking for maximum fuel economy, you may want to consider a micro car with less comfort.

I have driven this car all over Canada and other places. I recently installed new airbags for the shocks, which can be a recurring issue to replace at a cost of $500. The bags tend to rub and eventually need replacement, with the frequency depending on conditions, ranging from 45k-80k. Unfortunately, the airbag motor now needs to be replaced. The starter went out before 80k, and the power windows can be slow or unresponsive. The battery is positioned differently than most cars. The paint job fades quickly, which is disappointing. The interior ceiling and speaker covers are also showing signs of wear. However, the engine itself is reliable and durable. While there have been some issues, with proper maintenance, this car can still be a great investment. It is important to keep in mind that some repairs may be necessary, but the low initial price makes it a worthwhile consideration.
