1996 Lincoln Town car problems

The Lincoln Town Car is a model line of full-size luxury sedans that was marketed by the Lincoln division of the American automaker Ford Motor Company. Deriving its name from a limousine body style, Lincoln marketed the Town Car from 1981 to 2011, with the nameplate previously serving as the flagship trim of the Lincoln Continental. Produced across three generations for thirty model years, the Town Car was marketed directly against luxury sedans from Cadillac and Chrysler.

Marketed nearly exclusively as a four-door sedan (a two-door sedan was offered for 1981 only), many examples of the Town Car were used for fleet and livery (limousine) service. From 1983 to its 2011 discontinuation, the Town Car was the longest car produced by Ford worldwide, becoming the longest mass-production car sold in North America from 1997 to 2011. While not a direct successor of the Town Car, the Lincoln MKS would become the longest American sedan until 2016 (overtaken by the Cadillac CT6).

From 1980 until 2007, the Lincoln Town Car was assembled in Wixom, Michigan, (Wixom Assembly) alongside the Lincoln Continental, LS, and Mark VI, VII, and VIII. After Wixom's closure, Town Car production moved to Southwold, Ontario, (St. Thomas Assembly) alongside the similar Ford Crown Victoria and the Mercury Grand Marquis. The final Lincoln Town Car was produced on August 29, 2011.

Within the Lincoln model line, the Town Car was not directly replaced; the nameplate was used from 2012 to 2019 to denote livery/limousine/hearse variants of the Lincoln MKT. For 2017, the revived Continental replaced the MKS, closely matching the Town Car in wheelbase and width.

Common 1996 Lincoln Town car problems

The 1996 Lincoln Town Car is known for several common problems that affect its reliability and performance. One of the most prevalent issues is with the air conditioning (A/C) system, which can fail completely without warning. Some owners have reported smelling strange odors from their A/C before it fails, which could indicate a problem with the system's components. Multiple Technical Service Bulletins (TSBs) have been issued for the 1996 Lincoln Town Car's A/C, including TSB #99195, #00213, and #9735, among others. However, A/C failure may also be linked to a faulty A/C compressor clutch air gap, which can cause the A/C to intermittently shut down. Some owners have reported fixing their A/Cs by getting their A/C compressor clutch air gaps adjusted, which costs around $60. This issue is common in the 1990-2010 Lincoln Town Car models.

Another significant problem with the 1996 Lincoln Town Car is vehicle control issues, which can cause the car to unexpectedly jerk or accelerate. Some owners have reported that their cars sped up instead of stopping when they stepped on the brakes. In some cases, the brakes failed to stop the car, resulting in crashes. These issues can increase the risk of accidents and have been linked to multiple confirmed injuries and crashes. These problems usually occur at around 54,400 miles. If you notice any signs of these issues with your Town Car, it's crucial to consult a mechanic immediately to avoid accidents.

The 1996 Lincoln Town Car's acceleration problems can also become very annoying. Some owners have reported that their cars wouldn't speed up no matter how much they stepped on the gas pedal. This issue may be linked to faulty components, such as the fuel filter, throttle position sensor, or catalytic converter. Some owners were able to resolve these problems by replacing their faulty components. However, there are other complications that may reduce your Town Car's acceleration, such as transmission, exhaust, and engine issues, which may be more complicated to resolve.

The Lincoln Town Car is equipped with a high-tech air suspension that provides excellent ride and impeccable comfort when driving on any road. However, the air suspension is prone to breakdowns, which can cause the car to drag like a dog. When the air suspension blows, the ride becomes harsh and uncomfortable, especially on bumpy roads. Additionally, the Lincoln Town Car is notorious for being horrible in the rain, with the car slipping and sliding like it's on ice.

The Lincoln Town Car's climate control system can also give issues, with buttons cracking and crumbling easily. The blend doors can also give problems, leaving you sweating in the middle of summer because the heat won't turn off. The windows are also known to fail, with the motors costing around $150 to replace. The automatic trunk lid is another luxury item that is often broken, with the trunk not shutting anymore after being slammed by a grocery bag or similar item.

In conclusion, while the 1996 Lincoln Town Car is an extremely reliable vehicle, it is essential to be aware of its potential problems to manage them effectively. Regular maintenance and timely repairs can help ensure the car's longevity and performance.

Why did they stop making Lincoln Town Car?

Although remaining Lincoln's top-selling model, calendar-year sales declined each year for the Town Car between 1986 and 1989. This decline was mostly blamed on its aging design and the increased popularity of the Continental which had been fully redesigned for 1988.

ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,EXTERIOR LIGHTING PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2011-08-04
  • VIN: 1LNLM82W5TY
  • Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,EXTERIOR LIGHTING
  • Summary: HEADLIGHTS AND DASH PANEL CUT OFF INTERMITTENTLY WHILE DRIVING ON SMOOTH PAVEMENT FOR PAST 10 YEARS. I HAVE HAD DEALERSHIP EXPERIENCE THIS BUT THEY COULD NOT FIND ANY PROBLEM. ALSO, THE SPEEDOMETER SHOWS CAR SPEED AT 100 OR MORE MPH WHEN STARTING CAR BUT GOES TO NORMAL WHEN MOVING. I JUST REPLACED THE MOTORCRAFT ALTERNATOR WITH A REBUILD VERSION AND THE SPEEDOMETER PROBLEM IS GONE. CAN'T BE SURE THAT THE HEADLIGHT ISSUE IS GONE TOO, BUT THIS SEEMS TO BE THE MAGIC FIX. I'M WONDERING IF A BATCH OF INTERMITTENTLY DEFECTIVE MOTORCRAFT ALTERNATORS WERE OEM SINCE THIS SEEMS TO BE A PROBLEM FOR OTHERS. IT IS VERY SCARY TO BE DRIVING 55 MPH AND HAVE THE HEADLIGHTS CUT OFF FOR A SHORT TIME. MONTHS GO BY AND NOTHING HAPPENS; THEN THERE IT IS AGAIN. I WAS THINKING THAT THE CAR WAS HAUNTED. I STILL HAVE THE OLD MOTORCRAFT ALTERNATOR BUT I WILL RETURN IT TO AUTOZONE TO GET MY CORE BACK UNLESS IT CAN BE USED TO DETERMINE IT IS DEFECTIVE. OVER THE YEARS I HAVE SPENT A LOT AT REPAIR SHOPS AND THE DEALERSHIP TRYING TO LOCATE THE CAUSE OF THIS. AT THE SUGGESTION OF THE DEALER SERVICE MANAGER, I REPLACED THE SPEED SENSOR TWICE OVER THE YEARS TO "FIX" THE ERRATIC SPEED AT STARTUP BUT WITHOUT ANY CHANGE. *KB

I TOOK THE CAR TO SEARS AUTOMOTIVE AND DISCOVERED THAT THE LOWER BALL JOINT ARE DEFECTIVE AND CONTROL ARMS. THE PROBLEM MATCHES EXACTLY YOUR RECALL BELOW: NHTSA CAMPAIGN ID NUMBER: 98V322000 SUMMARY: VEHICLE DESCRIPTION: CERTAIN 1996-1999 FORD CROWN VICTORIA POLICE, FLEET, NATURAL GAS, AND 1996-1999 LINCOLN TOWN CAR LIMOUSINE VEHICLES THAT WERE PRODUCED WITH A LOWER CONTROL ARM BALL JOINT CONTAINING A ONE PIECE BEARING; AND 1990-1996 FORD CROWN VICTORIA POLICE, FLEET, AND NGV VEHICLES AND 1990-1996 LINCOLN TOWN CAR LIMOUSINE VEHICLES THAT HAVE BEEN SERVICED WITH EITHER A BALL JOINT CONTAINING THE ONE-PIECE BEARING OR A FRONT LOWER CONTROL ARM CONTAINING A BALL JOINT WITH A ONE-PIECE BEARING. THE ONE-PIECE BEARING WITHIN THE LOWER CONTROL ARM BALL JOINT CAN WEAKEN SLOWLY DURING USE AND EVENTUALLY CRACK. 1996 Lincoln Town car recalls

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) has issued 10 recalls for different components of the 1996 Lincoln Town car.

2015-10-06
  • Manufacturer: Dorman Products, Inc.
  • Components: STEERING
  • Summary: Dorman Products, Inc. (Dorman) is recalling certain model Dorman Steering Shafts, part number 425-359, Solutions Steering Shafts, part number 7-0359, and OE Solutions Steering Shafts, part number 425-359, manufactured April 17, 2014, to September 28, 2015. These aftermarket replacement steering shafts are sold for use in 1995-2002 Ford Crown Victoria, Mercury Grand Marquis, and Lincoln Town Car vehicles. These steering shafts may separate during operation if the integral fastener is loose or missing and if the interfacing vehicle shaft is compressed in length.

  • Remedy: Dorman will notify owners, and dealers will replace the steering shaft, free of charge. The recall began on October 28, 2015. Owners may contact Dorman customer service at 1-800-523-2492, option 5.

I strongly dislike the plastic parts in cars. This particular car does not meet my expectations and I regret purchasing it. I do not recommend buying a Lincoln.

Positive 1996 Lincoln Town car car reviews

  1. Fausto Grady 2025-01-08

I'm so glad to hear that you're enjoying your Cartier! It sounds like it's been a reliable and comfortable car for you, even with the high mileage. The leather seating and dashboard design sound like they really add to the luxurious feel of the car. It's great to hear that you've had no major issues with it and that routine maintenance has kept it running smoothly. Plus, the gas mileage is impressive for a car of its size. It's no wonder you prefer driving it over your Scion! Thanks for sharing your positive experience with the Cartier.

  2. Unique Bins 2024-11-25

I really enjoyed driving the car. It felt very powerful and capable, and I was pleasantly surprised by how good the gas mileage was (18-24 mpg). Despite its size, the TC was very agile and composed, even when I pushed it to its limits. And of course, I loved the car's looks!

  3. Gonzalo Wiza 2024-11-22

I love the smooth ride and luxury provided with this car. It accelerates effortlessly while still being quiet as a mouse.

  4. Edison Reichel 2024-11-21

You've got yourself an excellent riding car that almost drives itself!

  5. Gaston Brakus 2024-10-26

This vehicle is really comfortable to ride in. It's smooth on the road and the gas mileage has been very reasonable. I love the huge trunk space and the leather seats are very enjoyable in extreme weather conditions. I've kept up with the suggested oil changes during the time I've owned the car. The car has good tires and the suspension was just recently repaired.
