2015 Chevrolet Colorado problems

The Chevrolet Colorado (sharing mechanical commonality with the GMC Canyon), is a series of compact pickup trucks (mid-size since second generation) marketed by American automaker General Motors. They were introduced in 2004 to replace the Chevrolet S-10 and GMC S-15/Sonoma compact pickups. The Colorado is named after the U.S. state of Colorado, while the Canyon would be the deep chasm between cliffs.

First generation (2004)

The Chevrolet Colorado and its twin, the GMC Canyon were jointly designed by GM's North American operations, GM's Brazil operations, and Isuzu, which began selling its own version worldwide in 2002. In late 2005, Isuzu offered a version in North America called the Isuzu i-series. This North American model Isuzu shared North American powertrains, styling, and equipment with the Colorado/Canyon twins and differed from Isuzu's worldwide offering. All Chevrolet, GMC, and Isuzu versions worldwide are based on the GMT355, itself the basis for the GMT 345-based Hummer H3. Most vehicles for markets outside North America are manufactured at a GM plant in Rayong, Thailand. All North American-market vehicles were manufactured by Shreveport Operations.

The cooperation between GM and Isuzu to build a light-duty truck and offer it in North America returns to an original arrangement the two companies had in the 1970s with the Chevrolet LUV, a rebadged Isuzu Faster.

STEERING PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2024-08-23
  • VIN: 1GCGTCE33F1
  • Components: STEERING
  • Summary: While driving at highway speeds, our 2015 Chevrolet Colorado suddenly experienced loss of power assisted steering. I was able to steer the vehicle, but there was no power assist. This happened suddenly, with no advance warning lights. At the time of the incident, the driver information center displayed "check power steering". The sudden loss surprised me and although the vehicle was driveable, the steering was very difficult and a large amount of effort was required to park the truck. I am very glad this did not happen while my wife was driving the vehicle. Upon restarting the truck after a key off cycle, the code and the symptom disappeared. We were able to drive the truck home without the failure occurring, only to drive it again the next day and experience the failure a second time. Once again, the symptom disappeared after a key cycle. We researched the issue on line and found a recall N202325410 that described the same issue that we experienced. However, our trucks VIN is not included in the recall. This is disturbing to me, because our truck displayed the exact symptoms described in the recall. I repaired the truck using the GM approved recall repair procedure, which was to replace the steering torque sensor cover. We have safely driven the truck with no further loss of the power assist for 2 weeks. If we had known this could be an issue, we would have addressed it pro-actively. Instead, we experienced a failure on the highway. I am relieved that no accident occurred, but any number of circumstances could have occurred that lead to an accident when you suddenly loose your power assist on steering. The vehicle is available for inspection, and I have saved the torque sensor cover that I removed. My local dealer confirmed the failure and provided information on the recall. My vehicle has not been inspected by GM, the police, insurance representatives, or others besides my GM dealer and myself. Warning lamps as described above.

STEERING PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2024-07-26
  • VIN: 1GCGSBE39F1
  • Components: STEERING
  • Summary: At highway speeds, the Service Power Steering System and the Traction Control light appears on the interment cluster message center and the vehicle becomes difficult to steer safely because the electronic power steering assist is turned off. To make the vehicle operational one must stop, turn off the vehicle and turn it back on. This will allow the power steering electronics to continue to operate normally until the next time when it suddenly cuts the power steering off again. I looked on this website and I see tons of recalls and complaints about this issues. My vehicle has over 200K highway miles and I am not expecting the manufacture to to cover the cost of this repair, but I also don't believe it is a $2K total Power Steering System replacement either. There has to be a few hundred dollar wiring repair that can be completed to make the system reliable again.

STEERING PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2024-05-30
  • VIN: 1GCGTBE32F1
  • Components: STEERING
  • Summary: 2015 Chevy Colorado power steering has been going out while driving, often on the highway. very hard to steer/turn. several times have to try to put truck in neutral, turn off the truck, turn it back on to get it to come back on... all while doing 65-70mph on the highway. I took it to my mechanic last night, and today I'm told, there has been a recall issued for this issue. Call GM and talk to them. I do, and am told after giving VIN, for whatever reasons, my specific truck is not included in the recall - and yet I fight with the wheel trying not to run off the road or slam into someone else as I try to pull over - which is what this safety recall is all about. All out of pocket expense to me and am told, by GM, even if they do later include my truck in this recall for this problem, they could reimburse me but I most likely won't get reimbursed due to age of the truck and now it has 110,000 k miles on it. WHAT?! I'm sure this is a common type of problem with recalls but for those of us who are on tight income, this is highly stressful and a major problem - for dealing with the car itself and feeling screwed over by the company/laws/whatever excuse they want to say. Truck is now in the shop and going to get fixed cause I don't want to freaking die while driving and somehow I have to figure out how to pay the thousands of dollars to fix it.

I had to pull over to turn off the truck, and power steering returned upon turning back on the vehicle. No loss of power steering fluid was noted. This incident repeated itself exactly the same several days later. Upon taking to the mechanic, they confirmed with the following: "We've confirmed an intermittent issue with the power steering, identified by the retrieval of the C0545 code for the steering torque sensor. Upon conducting a thorough data test, we observed erratic signals from the steering wheel torque sensor. We meticulously inspected all connections, finding no issues. Furthermore, our testing revealed that the torque sensor circuits are not shorted to power or ground, and there are no instances of resistance or opens. We recommend replacing and programming the electronic steering gear assembly, as the steering torque sensor is integrated into it." Final repairs and replacement of the steering gear assembly cost approximately $2500.00

  • Consequence: If the driver air bag does not deploy as designed, there is an increased risk of driver injury in the event of a crash necessitating air bag deployment.
  • Remedy: GM will notify owners, and dealers will reprogram the inflatable restraint sensing and diagnostic module (SDM), free of charge. The recall began on October 6, 2014. Owners may contact GM customer service at 1-800-222-1020 (Chevrolet) or 1-800-462-8782 (GMC). GM's number for this recall is 14690.

I've been using this truck for commuting, towing a small camper, back roading in Colorado, and carrying people, and I haven't had a single mechanical issue. Passengers have even commented on how unexpectedly comfortable the ride is, and there's lower wind noise than I expected. Although I've never had infotainment features before, they work perfectly fine, and I love the backup camera - it's a must-have with a cap on the back. I'm still getting used to the length, though. The long wheelbase, long bed crew is just as long as a full-size truck. While the front bumper finish seems a little delicate and has a few nicks from bugs or whatever that have gone through the beautiful red paint and now black is showing, the truck is still running great 10 months and 25,000 miles later. However, I do have a concern with the front air dam, which is awful for a 4WD. I've scraped it several times driving mild 4WD roads, and GM is not interested in addressing the design flaw. According to the owner's manual, you're supposed to remove it if you're going to take it off-road, but you can't do it without disassembling the whole front end. Apparently, the off-road package is for looks only. GM customer service blew me off, and they have no fix for this design flaw. I'm very disappointed with GM.

I'm having some trouble with the GPS system in my Colorado. It was a $495.00 option, but unfortunately, it hasn't been very useful. Firstly, the voice activation is terrible. Secondly, I've found that my portable GPS works much better than the installed GPS. I have a $100 TomTom and a free GPS app on my iPhone that are much more reliable. In fact, I often just set my iPhone on the ledge of the navigation screen. Another issue I've encountered is that I can't just enter a city, I have to enter a specific address. Additionally, when I search for a restaurant as a point of interest, I sometimes get results for a Racetrack gas station instead. I'm currently in the process of trying to get a refund from GMC. Unfortunately, I don't have space to go into more detail about the other issues I've had.

I recently purchased my dream truck after saving up for a long time. I found it at my local dealership with everything I wanted and was excited to finally take it home. However, I have been a bit disappointed with the extra costs for the electronics and the fact that my $500 monthly payment turned into $600. I have also had to take it to the dealership multiple times in just four months. While my friend with a Top of the Line Ford F150 Platinum 4x4 thinks my truck is awesome, I have had some issues and am concerned about its longevity. Despite these problems, I am still a proud Chevy owner. I am considering purchasing the Silverado Z71, but I am not sure if it is off-road worthy. I have also had some issues with the wind dam in the front of the truck. Overall, I am concerned about my truck making it to the 60-month mark, but I am hopeful that it will. This might be my reality, but I'll tell you this: I didn't work my tail off to cheat for some hard-earned steal and muscle that I feel I deserve.

This truck replaced a Nissan Frontier. Sadly, my alma matter, Ford, was out as they killed off the Ranger 3 years ago. However, I have had the truck for a week now and I must say, I like it! We drove a 700 mile trip through the mountains and averaged 23.5 mpg going 70 mph with 4 people and bed full. The Nissan on the same trip averaged 19.3 mpg. The truck is very quiet and comfortable, with first-rate fit and finish inside and out. Although I have not used the 4X4 or towed yet, with 7000 lbs capacity, it should do well. Overall, after a week and 1000 miles, I would definitely recommend it. I was going to wait on the diesel, but after comparing potential costs vs. return, the gas V-6 was the better buy. Update 12/31/2016: The bad news is that I have owned this truck for 2 years now and 27K miles, and sadly it has not been reliable. I just can't recommend the Colorado. It has been in a Chevy dealer for warranty repairs for over 35 days of the 2 years of ownership. Problems include OnStar Module, 4WD electronic transfer case replaced twice, hood vibrating at highway speeds replaced twice and still has minor vibration, poor paint quality on roof, engine spark knocking under light load, transmission has higher pitched hum at 50-60 mph and hard shifting under light load, heater completely went out, A/C went out twice, ignition had to be replaced due to the key getting so hot you could not touch it, brakes squeaking when cold, and the most annoying, a clicking sound in the steering column that GM engineering has yet to come up with a fix for that is related to the airbag, not to mention multiple recalls. However, the bright spot has been the dealer support, Autosport Chevrolet in Hackettstown NJ. They have been very helpful through all these problems and kept in contact with GM engineering to resolve most of the issues. I can't say enough good things about them!I'm glad to hear that you're enjoying your Colorado truck! It's great to know that it gets good gas mileage (averaging 22.5 combined city/highway) and that it's comfortable, roomy, and quiet. The infotainment and navigation systems are also top-notch. If you're considering purchasing a Colorado, I would highly recommend getting the GM extended warranty. While there have been some issues with earlier production models, it's good to know that there are many Colorado's on the road now with improved build quality.

I ordered a 2015 Chevy Colorado back in August 2014 and waited 93 days until it was delivered. I received my 2015 Z71 Extended Cab 3.6L on December 3 2014 and as of October 20, 2015 I currently only have 7,300 miles. Although I am right under 6'3

I needed to get a WT model rather than the base model to get the rear seats that are, at best, for occasional use. I elected to get the 6-cylinder engine because I felt that the 4 would be under powered, and there was just 1 mpg difference in fuel economy between the engines. I don't regret either decision. The Colorado is a great work truck, with adequate power, and it's quiet. I'm looking forward to getting years of use from it. Already, in the first year, I've hauled gravel, mulch, sand, paving stones, wood chips, and cardboard in it. I also have used it on a week-long camping trip, after purchasing an air mattress that fills the truck's bed, a tent that fits over the truck bed, and another tent that attaches to the first and sits on the ground behind the truck bed. I really appreciated the driving position of the truck when I drove for 11 continuous hours to my camping destination. My actual mileage in the truck is around 20 mpg--a bit less around town and as high as 25 mpg for long stretches of Interstate highways.

I have owned a Tacoma and a Frontier. Both were great trucks. The Colorado is also a great truck, and I am very happy with my purchase. It is comfortable, has a smooth ride, and boasts an outstanding interior and awesome exterior. The technology is top rate, and I love driving it. I have received a lot of people checking it out and asking me about it. I would encourage others to buy a Chevy.

First of all, I had some trouble selecting the right truck model - the LT Extended Cab 4x4 Long Bed with the 3.6L V6 and 6-speed auto - but Edmunds was able to help me out. I decided to purchase the 2015 Colorado because I was tired of maneuvering my 2013 Silverado in town and only getting 15.5 MPG. The Colorado still has a 6-foot 2-inch bed, but it's over 15 inches shorter and 6 inches narrower than a full-size pickup, making it much easier to park in normal spaces. The handling and braking are quite good, and the 3.6L engine can make the Colorado move quite well. I drive the truck without babying it and still get very good fuel economy - an average of 21.8 MPG in combined driving and up to 26 MPG on the highway using 89 Octane gas (although MPG dropped a bit after I replaced the OE tires at 30K with a set of Wrangler Adventure W/Kevlar). My single biggest complaint is the front seats, which are built for short, narrow-framed occupants. Also, why does a truck need a console-mounted shifter to take up valuable space? A column shift would be much better. However, I am impressed with the build quality of the body. My Silverado was full of dash rattles and door squeaks at just 15K, while the Colorado has remained tight and noise-free even at 30K. The paint job could be better, as it has some visible tiger striping in the metallic. This seems to be a common defect on GM's robot-painted vehicles. The 4x4 system and Eaton locking rear differential provide very good traction, and the traction/stability control works quite well without being overly intrusive. I removed the nearly useless rear seats to gain more in-cab storage. Only children would fit back there, and I don't have any. If you are planning on hauling more than two people, I would recommend buying the Crew Cab. All things considered, I really like my 2015 Colorado and would buy one again. These trucks are definitely worth a serious look.

I really love my truck! I've had it for over a month now and I'm very happy with my fully loaded z71 package. However, I would like to suggest two improvements. Firstly, it would be great to have heated side mirrors (which seems like a common feature for Chevy trucks). Secondly, I was disappointed to find out that collision and lane departure options are only available for LT trim. When I built the truck online, it was not clear that these safety options were only available for LT trim. I understand that it was my responsibility to confirm this at the dealership, but it would be great if these options were also available for the top trim. It's like making leather seats only available for the base model. Thank you for considering my feedback!

Hi there! I noticed that my valves rattle when shifting, especially when I use Chevron 87 or 91 octane fuel. I have a V6 3.6 engine. Do you have any suggestions on how to fix this issue?
