1992 Lincoln Town car problems
The Lincoln Town Car is a model line of full-size luxury sedans that was marketed by the Lincoln division of the American automaker Ford Motor Company. Deriving its name from a limousine body style, Lincoln marketed the Town Car from 1981 to 2011, with the nameplate previously serving as the flagship trim of the Lincoln Continental. Produced across three generations for thirty model years, the Town Car was marketed directly against luxury sedans from Cadillac and Chrysler.
Marketed nearly exclusively as a four-door sedan (a two-door sedan was offered for 1981 only), many examples of the Town Car were used for fleet and livery (limousine) service. From 1983 to its 2011 discontinuation, the Town Car was the longest car produced by Ford worldwide, becoming the longest mass-production car sold in North America from 1997 to 2011. While not a direct successor of the Town Car, the Lincoln MKS would become the longest American sedan until 2016 (overtaken by the Cadillac CT6).
From 1980 until 2007, the Lincoln Town Car was assembled in Wixom, Michigan, (Wixom Assembly) alongside the Lincoln Continental, LS, and Mark VI, VII, and VIII. After Wixom's closure, Town Car production moved to Southwold, Ontario, (St. Thomas Assembly) alongside the similar Ford Crown Victoria and the Mercury Grand Marquis. The final Lincoln Town Car was produced on August 29, 2011.
Within the Lincoln model line, the Town Car was not directly replaced; the nameplate was used from 2012 to 2019 to denote livery/limousine/hearse variants of the Lincoln MKT. For 2017, the revived Continental replaced the MKS, closely matching the Town Car in wheelbase and width.

Common 1992 Lincoln Town car problems
The Lincoln Town Car, a large and comfortable American sedan, has been known for its reliability and spaciousness. However, there are certain common problems that have been reported by owners of the 1992 model, based on complaints and reports from various sources.
- Cracked Intake Manifold: The most commonly reported problem with the 1992 Lincoln Town Car is a cracked intake manifold. This issue affects the engine, causing it to overheat and potentially leading to more serious engine damage. The average cost to fix this problem is around $900, with an average mileage of 120,000 miles.
- Vehicle Control Issues: Some owners of the 1992 Lincoln Town Car have reported issues with vehicle control, including unexpected acceleration and braking problems. These issues can increase the risk of accidents, especially if the car suddenly jerks or accelerates when the brakes are applied. If you notice any signs of these problems with your Town Car, it is crucial to consult a mechanic immediately to avoid accidents.
- Air Conditioning (A/C) Problems: A/C problems in the 1992 Lincoln Town Car can become severe, leading to total component failure. Some owners have reported that their A/C suddenly broke down without any warnings. Others have experienced abnormal smells coming from the A/C before failure. These problems may be linked to multiple technical service bulletins (TSBs) and can lead to significant repair costs.
- Poor Handling and Braking: The 1992 Lincoln Town Car has been reported to have poor handling, especially during panic stops. The car's large size and heavy weight can make it difficult to control during sudden braking, even with anti-lock braking system (ABS) assistance. Changing driving habits and being aware of the car's limitations can help mitigate this issue.
- Faulty Components: Various faulty components, such as the fuel filter, throttle position sensor, or catalytic converter, can contribute to poor acceleration and other performance issues in the 1992 Lincoln Town Car. Replacing these faulty components may help resolve some of these problems, but other complications, such as transmission, exhaust, and engine issues, may require more extensive repairs.
By being aware of these common problems and addressing them promptly, 1992 Lincoln Town Car owners can help ensure the safety and longevity of their vehicles. Regular maintenance and inspections can also help prevent these issues from arising in the first place.

Purchased the TC as an extra vehicle and ended up driving it as a primary vehicle for nearly 50k miles. It has been a very reliable and safe car. Additionally, it is extremely comfortable and luxurious, almost like a living room on wheels. I am sad to sell it, but I need a lower mileage primary car. You can find great deals on this vintage TC with low mileage.

I noticed that the paint is peeling along the bottom of the back fenders and around the bumpers, leaving a yellow undercoat showing. I'm hoping that there will be a recall on the paint, similar to what happened with the Ford trucks. Additionally, I've had to replace one set of brake shoes every 4 to 6 months, while the other 3 sets are still in like-new condition. My mechanic informed me that there's a defective design in the brake system that causes this problem. I'm keeping an eye out for a recall on this issue because it's both expensive and dangerous.
-
Great car! It has a smooth ride and plenty of power. The vehicle has never been in an accident and it handles really well.
-
It's great to hear that you're enjoying your car so much!
-
This car is outstanding! It's great to drive and very comfortable. While it does require a fair amount of gas, it keeps its performance for a long time. Additionally, buying an older model can be a great deal. However, it's important to note that maintenance can be expensive.

Hi there! I understand that you were told that this car has a new engine with only 40,000 miles on it, but the odometer reads well over 300,000. I also noticed through Carfax that it's considered a gross polluter and failed the emissions inspection on 2/18/03. Let's work together to find a solution to this issue!
Maxine Pollich 2024-04-13
The paint peeling along the bottom of the back fender/bumper is caused by the friction from the chrome strip and the paint. Additionally, we experienced an issue with the sunroof seal, which had a tendency to shrink at the joint, leaving a gap between 1/2 an inch to a full inch depending on the seal. We had to replace ours 23 times during the first four years of ownership. However, the car is mechanically reliable and does not leak a drop of oil, which is a great advantage over our Cadillac. Unfortunately, the fit and finish, materials used, and dealer service are not superior when compared to our Cadillac.
