The Hyundai Sonata (Korean: 현대 쏘나타) is a mid-size car that has been manufactured by Hyundai since 1985. The first generation Sonata, which was introduced in 1985, was a facelifted version of the Hyundai Stellar with an engine upgrade, and was withdrawn from the market in two years due to poor customer reaction. While the nameplate was originally only sold in South Korea, the second generation of 1988 was widely exported.

The Sonata is currently manufactured in South Korea where their headquarters are located, China and Pakistan. It was named after the musical term, sonata.

First generation (Y1; 1985)

The first Sonata was introduced to compete with the Daewoo Royale series and was a more luxurious version of the Stellar. It included cruise control, power seats, head lamp washers, power brakes, electric operated adjustable side mirrors and chrome bumper trims. The Sonata was available with two trim options in Korea: Luxury and Super (the latter only available with a 2.0-liter engine). In the domestic market Hyundai attempted to sell the Sonata as an executive car using catchphrases like "Luxury car for VIP"; however, as the Sonata was based on the Stellar without any major changes, it was seen by the public as no more than a luxury version of the Stellar. In 1987 Hyundai added two tone color schemes and a trip computer option, but sales soon went down and the car was discontinued in December of that year. The Sonata was sold only in the South Korean domestic market. The vehicle was unveiled in South Korea on 4 November 1985.

Engine choices included 1.6-liter Mitsubishi Saturn (only available outside the domestic market), 1.8- and 2.0-liter Mitsubishi Sirius inline-fours. The latter unit also found its way into the 1987 and later Stellar, and in MPI form the 1986 Hyundai Grandeur. The body was a largely unchanged Hyundai Stellar.

It was sold in New Zealand (right hand drive) with the 1.6-liter Mitsubishi engine with the five-speed manual gearbox; an automatic transmission was an optional extra. The original importer was a unit of the Auckland-based Giltrap Motor Group.

The final version of the Stellar was known as the Stellar 88 and was launched to celebrate the 1988 Summer Olympics in Seoul. Afterwards, Hyundai discontinued the Stellar and replaced it with the all-new Sonata.

Common 2009 Hyundai Sonata problems

The 2009 Hyundai Sonata has been known to experience several common problems that have been reported by owners.

One of the most significant issues is related to the fuel pump. Fuel pump failures are quite common in the 2009 Sonata, especially within the first 100,000 miles. A loss of power and engine stalling are typical signs of a problem with the fuel pump. Replacing the fuel sending unit assembly can cost approximately $1,300.

Another common problem is engine failures, which have been reported around the 100,000-mile mark. Engine knock is a sign of internal damage, which can lead to an engine failure, costing over $5,000 to replace.

The 2009 Sonata also has issues with paint chipping off, especially when the paint is not properly cared for. Repainting affected areas can cost about $1,000 per panel.

In addition to these problems, the 2009 Sonata has experienced recalls related to the stop lamp switch and crossmember corrosion. The stop lamp switch recall affects the vehicle's ability to control, while the crossmember corrosion recall can cause the vehicle to lose control.

The engine and fuel delivery problems in the 2009 Hyundai Sonata can lead to significant expenses, especially when the engine fails. The car's value, which ranges from $5,163 to $8,993, is not worth the potential risks associated with these problems.

Overall, the 2009 Hyundai Sonata has several common problems related to the fuel pump, engine, paint, and recalls. These issues can lead to significant expenses and safety concerns, making the car a less attractive option for potential buyers.

ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,UNKNOWN OR OTHER PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2023-07-20
  • VIN: 5NPET46C99H
  • Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,UNKNOWN OR OTHER
  • Summary: I see that the manufacturer has an "Open Service Campaign" on their Sonata's shark fins. I've taken mine to the local dealership and they want a min. $700 to replace the shark fin. It just came off somewhere (a couple of years ago) and, now, my car has to be jumped off if I let it sit more than two days. I have had it inspected by the dealer and an individual garage. No one would tell me what was draining my battery. I am a senior citizen and fear I will get stranded on the road somewhere. The missing fin lets water into my car, soaking the carpets, etc. Finally, it was suggested that the car cover I keep on it touches the exposed fin components and that's what was draining my battery. It seems that the manufacturer was aware enough of this faulty part to want to prevent complaints by voluntarily replacing problematic parts (thus the service campaign). And, there are a lot of videos on YouTube from DIY folks who've suffered through replacing the shark fins (many different models) themselves. It seems, however, the manufacturer only notified dealers with said "open service campaign," not the public, as in a proper Recall process. That way, they get to make more money off the public when the part falls off? Please advise how one might get the dealers to do the right thing. Thank you.

SERVICE BRAKES PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2021-07-17
  • VIN: 5NPET46C39H
  • Components: SERVICE BRAKES
  • Summary: The problem as reported by so many others that the rear brake system has an inherent failure in the caliper/rotor/brake pads. I have vested nearly $2500.00 on the three for mentioned parts and labor over last 4 years. Between Midas and now a private mechanic have tried better lube on slide pins but the problem still persists. A little research states that the caliper piston doesn't retract from the rotors and in turn heating up the brake components to the point of failure. Some Law firms have stated the problem is a production flaw my problem with a system with this failure rate isn't recognized by the Hyundia. Calipers should simply last 80 to a 100 thousand miles under most driving conditions. Looking forward to your response. Kerry yakel

2013-08-12
  • Manufacturer: Hyundai Motor Company
  • Components: SUSPENSION:REAR
  • Summary: Hyundai is recalling certain model year 2006-2010 Sonata vehicles manufactured March 1, 2005, through January 21, 2010; and model year 2006-2011 Azera vehicles manufactured September 27, 2005, through November 22, 2010 originally sold in, or currently registered in, Connecticut, Delaware, Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Maine, Maryland, Massachusetts, Michigan, Minnesota, Missouri, New Hampshire, New Jersey, New York, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, Vermont, West Virginia, Wisconsin and the District of Columbia. Road salt and water can enter portions of the rear crossmember, leading to corrosion of the crossmember steel. This may lead to detachment of one of the rear control arms.
  • Consequence: Control arm separation may suddenly change the rear wheel alignment, affecting the handling of the vehicle, increasing the risk of a crash.
  • Remedy: Hyundai will notify owners, and dealers will repair or replace the crossmember assembly. The recall began on October 8, 2013. Owners may contact Hyundai Customer Care Center at 1-800-633-5151. Hyundai's recall number is 113.
2013-04-01
  • Manufacturer: Hyundai Motor Company
  • Components: EXTERIOR LIGHTING:BRAKE LIGHTS:SWITCH
  • Summary: Hyundai Motor Company (Hyundai) is recalling certain model year 2006-2009 Accent, model year 2007-2011 Azera, Sonata and Sante Fe,2006-2011 Tucson, 2009-2011 Elantra Touring, 2007-2010 Elantra, 2008-2011 Veracruz, 2009-2011 Genesis, 2010-2011 Genesis Coupe, 2007-2008 Entourage, and 2006-2008 Tiburon vehicles. The total number of vehicles being recalled is now 1,712,336. In the affected vehicles, the stop lamp switch may malfunction. A malfunctioning stop lamp switch may cause the brake lights to not illuminate when the brake pedal is depressed or may cause an inability to deactivate the cruise control by depressing the brake pedal. Additionally, a malfunctioning stop lamp switch may also result in intermittent operation of the push-button start feature, affect the operation of the brake transmission shift interlock feature, preventing the shifter from being moved out of the PARK position and cause the Electronic Stability Control (ESC) malfunction light to illuminate.
  • Consequence: Failure to illuminate the stop lamps during braking or inability to disengage the cruise control could increase the risk of a crash. Additionally, when the ignition is in the 'ON' position, the transmission shifter may be able to be moved out of Park without first applying the brake. This may lead to unintentional movement of the car which may increase the risk of a crash.
  • Remedy: Hyundai will notify owners, and dealers will replace the stop lamp switch, free of charge. The safety recall began on April 22, 2013. Owners may contact Hyundai at 1-800-633-5151. Hyundai's recall campaign number is 110.

Negative 2009 Hyundai Sonata car reviews

  1. Kevon Collins 2024-08-09

I purchased this car a year and a half ago as a second owner. It was in great condition with only 75K miles on it. Unfortunately, after 5 months, the check engine light came on and it took some time to troubleshoot the issue with my mechanic. It turned out to be a complicated problem with over 8 different possibilities indicated by the code. Now, the engine light is back on again, but this time it's for the transmission. The transmission specialist informed me that it would cost at least $1800 to fix, which is quite expensive for a car that is only 6 years old with 100K miles. I wish I had bought a Camry instead.=============Updated: 04/2019Since purchasing it used, I have had to fix a few issues every year that have cost me hundreds of dollars. It's not the most dependable car, unfortunately.

  2. Reyes Moen 2024-06-14

I am writing this review to express my disappointment with the warranty of my Hyundai car. Despite being advertised as a reliable product, my brand new car's AC stopped working after just 3 months. When I took it to the dealer, they claimed that a rock had hit my car and damaged the air conditioning function. As someone who has been driving cars of different brands for the past 20 years, I find it hard to believe that Hyundai's product is so fragile. Despite visiting another Hyundai dealership, I was still unable to get the issue resolved. When I asked why I had never experienced this problem with other cars I had driven for years, they attributed it to Hyundai's design. As a well-informed car buyer, I am disappointed with my experience and will not be purchasing a Hyundai again.

  3. Kolby Glover 2024-05-03

I purchased my Sonata brand new in May 2009. However, from the very beginning, I noticed that it had poor gas mileage and a shifting issue with the transmission at around 38 to 40 mph and 15 to 18 on the RPM gauge. When I brought it back to the dealer for service, I was told that it was how the car was supposed to drive and that there was nothing they could do to fix the problem except to flash the computer and then reset it. I was also told that it was the way I was driving the car. After having the computer reset and the transmission flashed, I now get 15.9 miles per gallon to a full tank of gas. I was told that this was due to the winter gas that is now out on the market. However, I find this hard to believe.

  4. Merritt Lindgren 2024-04-18

After researching the Sonata, I was convinced that it was a reliable car. However, I have had some issues with it lately. Unfortunately, at 70000 miles, the engine started to fall apart from the inside. Of course, I bought the car knowing that I needed a car that would get me well past the payments, and since I still owe $11,000 +, I am more than upset to add over $5000 in engine replacement costs.

Invest your money wisely and avoid the 2009 Sonata Limited. Despite its attractive appearance, this car has proven to be unreliable with multiple breakdowns and transmission issues. It is advisable to consider other options from more reputable brands that offer better quality and performance. Remember, a higher initial investment can save you from costly repairs and inconvenience in the long run.

Positive 2009 Hyundai Sonata car reviews

This is my 4th Hyundai and I must say, they are all great cars! I have put 45,000 miles on my 09 model and have had absolutely no problems. The 4 cylinder engine provides all the performance any normal driver could want, and the gas mileage is excellent, achieving 44 mpg (imperial gallon) on highway trips. It is very well equipped for such an inexpensive car. Move over Toyota!

The car is an excellent value for the money, bar none. I had it for two months and unfortunately was rear-ended by a full-size Chevy pickup. Although there was some damage, the active headrest moved forward for both my wife and me, and despite the impact from the speed of the Chevy, we were both fine. I drive this car 96 miles per day and it is economical, reliable, comfortable, and, most importantly, safe. There is plenty of room for my 6+ ft sons in the back. Although I have been a loyal GM customer for years, Hyundai has won me over with this car. The only thing I don't like is that mine looks a bit outdated compared to the newer models, which are very sharp. I have owned dozens of cars in my life, and this is by far the best value for the money.

I hope you're doing well! I just wanted to share my experience with my car. I bought it back in 2014 with 80K miles on it, and it's been virtually maintenance-free ever since! The only repairs I've had to make were to replace the brakes, tires, and wheel bearings. It's got 190K miles on it now and it's still going strong. Honestly, it's the best car I've ever owned!

I am upgrading from a Kia Sportage to the Sonata. What a difference! I feel like I'm in heaven driving this car. I was a bit hesitant about buying another Korean car, but so far, I have not been let down.

I hope you're doing well! I just wanted to let you know that my car has been running like a dream since I bought it brand new. Even after 211,000 miles, it still runs and drives great with only normal maintenance. Despite living on a dirt road, there are no squeaks or rattles, which is kind of amazing!
