Common 2012 Mini Cooper s countryman problems
Based on complaints from owners of the 2012 Mini Cooper S Countryman, several common problems have been reported:
- Transmission Issues: Numerous Countryman models, including the 2012 version, are prone to transmission problems. Common symptoms include abnormal noises, delayed shifting, excessive vibrations, and acceleration jumps. Regular transmission checks are recommended to address these issues.
- Shattering/Exploding Sunroof: The 2013 Mini Countryman has been reported to have problems with the sunroof shattering or exploding, leading to safety concerns. Replacing the sunroof with shatterproof glass is advised to resolve this issue.
- Oil Leaks: Internal oil leaks have been identified as a significant problem with the 2012 Countryman. These leaks are hard to detect externally and may lead to oil dripping through the wiring sheath, potentially causing a short circuit and severe damage, including to the electronic control unit (ECU).
- Turbo Issues: The N18 engine in the 2012 Mini Cooper S Countryman is known to have potential turbo issues, with reports of turbos needing replacement around every 80,000 miles. Regular maintenance, including using quality plugs and wires, and keeping the oil changed and clean, can help prevent these turbo-related problems.
- Clutch Wear: Early all-wheel drive ALL4 models of the Mini Countryman can experience premature clutch wear. Models from November 2012 onwards used a stronger clutch to address this issue.
- Chrome Trim Peeling: The exterior chrome trim on the Mini Countryman is actually plastic, and over time, the coating can peel, affecting the car's appearance. While this doesn't impact the car mechanically, it can make the vehicle look worn.
These common problems reported by owners highlight the importance of regular maintenance and thorough inspections to address potential issues with the 2012 Mini Cooper S Countryman.

ENGINE PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2023-03-27
- VIN: WMWSV3C59CT
- Components: ENGINE
- Summary: Nothing has failed yet, however, the oil stick is completely illegible. On a car that fails to have an electronic dipstick and likes to burn oil, as well as has a very small oil capacity (Around 5 liters or less) this design is going to cause the engine to run out of oil without the driver knowing. It is a seriously bad design, especially combined with BMW recommending a 10,000 mile oil change, the car will burn off all the oil it has and operator will have no idea due to the faulty design of the dipstick. I generally like BMWS engineering and designs, but this one is just atrocious and I have no idea how it got approved. Running a car out of oil usually causes the engine seize unless you shut it off at the right time, which, most people will not do. Imagine if your engine seizes on the highway? No it hasn't been inspected, I can send pictures of it, if you want? Or a video? I have not had this problem yet (knock on wood) but I have read the only warning sign, is the sound of an engine without oil and the oil pressure light comes on (which at that point you have maybe 3s to pull over and shut off the engine before it toasts the engine) I have also read about the engines consuming the entire oil capacity if you follow the BMW recommended schedule. It all just seems like a huge oversight for a company that usually has few issues.
ELECTRICAL SYSTEM PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2022-02-22
- Fire: 1

The purpose of the auxiliary water pump is to continue to pump coolant through the turbocharger even after the engine was shut off. The vehicle was totaled by the insurance company after the inspection by the dealer created an estimate too high for the repairs to be made. Report of this incident to the phone no of BMW/MiniCooper customer service had no favorable response. They blamed the US Government for not including this VIN in the recalls for this fire caused by the auxiliary water pump.
