Common Saturn Ion 2003 problems
The Saturn Ion, produced in 2003, has been known to have several common problems based on complaints from owners.
Another common issue with the 2003 Saturn Ion is the check engine light coming on due to ignition module/coil failure. This problem is caused by a faulty ignition module or coil that fails to provide the correct spark to the engine's cylinders. The result is a misfire, which can cause a decrease in fuel efficiency, power, and overall performance. The ignition module or coil may need to be replaced to fix this issue.
A third common problem with the Saturn Ion is the check engine light coming on due to a gas cap issue. This problem is caused by a faulty or missing gas cap that fails to seal properly, allowing fuel vapors to escape. This can result in a decrease in fuel efficiency and an increase in emissions. The solution to this problem is to replace the gas cap or ensure that it is properly tightened.
In addition to these common problems, the 2003 Saturn Ion has also been known to have issues with the transmission, power steering, and electrical systems. These problems can range from minor inconveniences to major repairs, and may require the attention of a qualified mechanic.
Overall, the 2003 Saturn Ion has several common problems that can affect its performance and reliability. While some of these issues can be resolved with simple repairs or replacements, others may require more extensive work. It is important for owners of this vehicle to be aware of these common problems and to address them promptly to ensure the safe and reliable operation of their vehicle.
How long will a 2003 Saturn Ion last?
200k miles
These cars are made to have problems and triumph through them. Keep up on the oil changes and it'll last you 200k miles easily.
Is there any recalls on a 2003 Saturn Ion?
Among the 2.5 million cars that General Motors is recalling due to defective ignition switches are thousands of Saturn Ions produced from 2003-2007. The ignition switch in these Saturn Ion models lacks enough torque to keep the key in the “on” position if the driver accidentally bumps it with his or her knee.
Does a 2003 Saturn Ion have a CVT transmission?
The 2003 and 2004 Ion Coupes were available with the VTi continuously variable transmission or a Getrag F23 5-speed manual.
How many miles do Saturn ions last?
Saturn Ion drivers regularly report the car surpassing 200,000 miles on the original engine and transmission. With excellent care there's no reason an Ion can't shoot right past a quarter million miles, but you'll have to be on the lookout for excessive wear and tear from previous owners.

STEERING PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2021-05-27
- VIN: 1G8AJ52F23Z
- Components: STEERING
- Summary: Rack and pinion is going bad, my mechanic said it's a common issue in these vehicles. When going around a corner it will want to float the opposite way, the steering will eventually get tight my mechanic said until I loose all steering. I am a single mother and have already replaced the whole front end on this vehicle pretty much. I know I've read so many others experiencing the same issues with their Saturn Ion, so I wanted to make it aware that this should be a recall and fixed before someone who knows nothing about vehicles ends up in a severe accident due to this big issue. Also the Key don't want to come out most of the time. An there is an issue with the car not wanting to come out of park sometimes. Not to mention it eats ball joints like crazy every other month I'm replacing the ball joints in this car. If I could afford another vehicle trust me I would but I can't even save for a new car due to all the repairs I've made. It's just frustrating that so many people are having this issue and no mechanic wants to do the rack and pinion job with out charging a fortune.

ELECTRICAL SYSTEM PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2018-05-13
- VIN: 1G8AJ52F53Z
- Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM
- Summary: THE IGNITION SWITCH IS NOT WORKING PROPERLY. SOMETIMES, WHEN VEHICLE IS PARKED AND AN ATTEMPT MAKE TO TURN IGNITION TO OFF POSITION, IT WON'T GO. IT SEEMED TO TAKE 10 - 60 SECONDS FOR IT TO RESET AND THEN KEY COULD BE REMOVED. THE LATEST INCIDENT OCCURRED ON 5/12-13/2018. THE VEHICLE WAS PARKED, TRANSMITION IN PARK POSITION, AND AN ATTEMPT MADE TO TURN IGNITION TO THE OFF POSITION. THE KEY COULD NOT BE MOVED. IT DID NOT RESET ITSELF. KEY WAS STUCK IN THE IGNITION, COULD BE TURNED SLIGHTLY TO THE RIGHT, VEHICLE COULD NOT BE RESTARTED. THEN ALL POWER WAS LOST, AS THOUGH THE BATTERY WAS DEAD. THE VEHICLE COULD NOT BE LOCKED OF UNLOCKED WITH THE KEY FOR, HAD TO USE A SECOND KEY TO LOCK AND UNLOCK THE VEHICLE. THIS VEHICLE WAS RECALLED FOR IGNITION SWITCH PROBLEMS IN 2015 AND WAS REPAIRED. THE SAME PROBLEM IS OCCURRING AGAIN. GM TELLS ME THE NEW REPAIR IS NOT GOING TO BE COVERED BY THEM. THE REASON, I'M TOLD, IS BECAUSE THE VEHICLE HAD TO CHECKED INTO THE DEALERSHIP NO LATER THAN 5/17/18. THE VEHICLE WAS TOWED TO THE DEALERSHIP ON THAT DATE. DUE TO SEVERE STORMS IN THE AREA THE TOW TRUCK DRIVER ARRIVED AT THE DEALERS SHIP A FEW MINUTES AFTER THE SERVICE DEPARTMENT CLOSED AND DEPOSITED THE KEY IN THE LOCK BOX. A REP FROM GM WAS SUPPOSED TO HAVE CALLED THE DEALERSHIP ON 5/17/18 BETWEEN 5:45 AND 6:00 TO ALERT THEM THE VEHICLE WAS ON THE WAS AND MIGHT BE A FEW MINUTES LATE AND TO PLEASE ACCEPT THE VEHICLE AND GET IT CHECKED IN. I AM ADVISED BY THE DEALERSHIP THEY RECEIVED NO SUCH CALL. THIS IS GOING TO BE AN EXPENSIVE REPAIR, I DID EVERYTHING THE GM REP ASKED OF ME, I AM 70 YEARS OLD AND HAVE A VERY LIMITED INCOME. I CAN'T BE THE ONLY PERSON THIS HAS HAPPENED TO. PLEASE HELP ME.
Saturn Ion 2003 recalls
The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) has issued 7 recalls for different components of the Saturn Ion 2003.
- Manufacturer: UCI-FRAM Group
- Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM:IGNITION:SWITCH
- Summary: UCI-FRAM Group is recalling certain LS1328 ignition Switches sold as Wells LS1328, Duralast LS1328, Airtex 1S6097, and Carquest 53-27479, and LS1497 Ignition Switches sold as Wells LS1497, Duralast LS1497, Airtex 1S10961, and Carquest 53-27967, for use on various General Motors model and model year vehicles during repair and replacement of the original ignition switch. The weight on the key ring and/or road conditions or some other jarring event may cause the affected ignition switches to move out of the run position, turning off the engine and disabling the air bags.
- Consequence: If the ignition switch moves from the run position to accessory, the car would stall and the air bags will not deploy in the event of a crash, increasing the risk of personal injury to the occupants.
- Remedy: UCI-FRAM Group has notified its purchasers to quarantine and return all inventory. Any switches already installed in vehicles will be replaced by GM dealers as part of NHTSA recall 14V-047, free of charge. UCI-Fram's purchasers should contact UCI-FRAM Group at 1-800-890-2075. GM vehicle owners requiring additional information on that recall campaign should contact GM at 1-800-222-1020 (Chevrolet), 1-800-762-2737 (Pontiac) or 1-800-553-6000 (Saturn).
- Manufacturer: General Motors LLC
- Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM:IGNITION
- Summary: General Motors LLC (GM) is recalling certain model year 2005-2010 Chevrolet Cobalt, 2006-2011 Chevrolet HHR, 2007-2010 Pontiac G5, 2006-2010 Pontiac Solstice, 2003-2007 Saturn Ion, and 2007-2010 Saturn Sky vehicles. In the affected vehicles, the key can be removed from the ignition when the ignition is not in the "Off" position.
- Consequence: If the key can be removed from the ignition when the ignition is not in the "off" position, the vehicle could roll away: (a) for an automatic transmission, if the transmission is not in the "Park" position; or (b) for a manual transmission, if the parking brake is not engaged and the transmission is not in the "Reverse" position. This potential for rollaway increases the risk for a crash and occupant or pedestrian injuries.
- Remedy: General Motors will notify owners, and for vehicles that were built with the defective ignition cylinder and have not previously had the ignition cylinder replaced with the redesigned part, dealers will replace the ignition cylinder and cut and, if necessary, re-learn two ignition/door keys for each vehicle. For vehicles that were built with the redesigned ignition cylinder or had the ignition cylinder replaced with the redesigned part, dealers will cut and, if necessary, re-learn two ignition/door keys for each vehicle. The recall began on April 18, 2014. Chevrolet owners may contact General Motors at 1-800-222-1020, Pontiac owners at 1-800-762-2737, and Saturn owners at 1-800-553-6000. General Motors' number for this recall is 14113 for the ignition lock cylinder and key replacement, and 14133 for only key replacements. Note: Until a vehicle has been remedied, owners and operators are advised that when exiting, to be sure that the vehicle is in "Park," or in the case of a manual transmission, that the vehicle is in the "Reverse" position and the parking brake is engaged.
- Manufacturer: General Motors LLC
- Components: AIR BAGS
- Summary: This defect can affect the safe operation of the airbag system. Until this recall is performed, customers should remove all items from their key rings, leaving only the ignition key. The key fob (if applicable), should also be removed from the key ring. General Motors LLC (GM) notified the agency on February 10, 2014 that they are recalling 619,122 model year 2005-2007 Chevrolet Cobalt, and 2007 Pontiac G5 vehicles. On February 25, 2014, GM increased the recall to include an additional 748,024 model year 2006-2007 Chevrolet HHR and Pontiac Solstice vehicles and 2003-2007 Saturn Ion vehicles and 2007 Saturn Sky vehicles. In these models, the weight on the key ring and/or road conditions or some other jarring event may cause the ignition switch to move out of the run position, turning off the engine. On March 27, 2014, GM notified the agency that the defective ignition switches may have been used as service replacement parts on other vehicles, and as a result GM will be recalling certain model year 2008-2010 Chevrolet Cobalt, Saturn Sky, and Pontiac G5 and Solstice, and 2008-2011 Chevrolet HHR vehicles. The part numbers for the service parts are 10392423 (a/k/a ACDelco D1461F), 10392737, 15857948, 15854953, 15896640, and 25846762. This expansion represents an additional 823,788 vehicles.
- Consequence: If the key is not in the run position, the air bags may not deploy if the vehicle is involved in a crash, increasing the risk of injury.
- Remedy: GM will notify owners, and dealers will replace the ignition switch, free of charge. An interim notification was issued to owners of 2007 and earlier models on March 10, 2014, informing them of the safety defect. Owners of 2008 and later vehicles will be mailed an interim letter on April 21, 2014. All affected owners will receive another letter once parts are available. The recall began on April 18, 2014. Owners may contact Chevrolet at 1-800-222-1020, Pontiac at 1-800-762-2737 or Saturn at 1-800-553-6000. GM's number for the initial recall is 13454 and 14063 for the expansion. GMs recall number for the vehicles that may have received the replacement parts is 14092. Note: Until the recall repairs have been performed, it is very important that customers remove all items from their key rings, leaving only the vehicle key. The key fob (if applicable), should also be removed from the key ring. Always wear your seatbelt.

Congratulations on your first new car purchase! I'm glad to hear that the ride is nice and quiet, making it one of the best you've had in your 15 years on the road. The driver's headroom is impressive, even for someone who is pushing 6-4 like you. I'm sure you could even sport a cowboy style hat and still have plenty of room! While the leg room could be a little more generous, it's great to hear that the power and handling are top-notch. It's understandable that the car may not handle as well in the snow, but the ABS/Traction control could offer better performance. Overall, it sounds like you're enjoying your new car and getting used to the tight turning. Thank you for sharing your experience with us!

For the price, you really can't go wrong. This car is solid and very reliable. The gas mileage is excellent, especially in the high-priced Chicago area.

I really love the drive and handling of this car. Although the gauges took me a while to get used to, they are starting to grow on me. Additionally, the car has plenty of room for a small vehicle.

Hi there! I hope you're doing well. I just wanted to share my experience with my new car. I purchased it at the end of December and so far, everyone who has seen it has complimented its looks. Additionally, those who have ridden in it have praised its performance and smooth ride. I opted for the ABS/traction control, A/C, and CD-Player and I must say, it's been a great investment. The car is quiet, responsive, gets decent mileage, and has plenty of room. I know some reviewers have complained about the seats being uncomfortable, but as a 6'3

Hi there! I'm glad to hear that you're enjoying driving your car! It sounds like you've had a few minor issues, but it's great to hear that Saturn was quick to fix them. The car seems to have a lot of space, both in the back seat and in the trunk, which is always a plus. It's also good to know that the engine has great acceleration and pep. Thanks for sharing your thoughts with us!

Saturn vehicles are known to have issues with their ignition switches, as evidenced by the numerous complaints online. Despite this, dealerships do not acknowledge the issue and only offer a temporary fix by replacing the faulty switch. It is important to be aware of this recurring problem when considering purchasing a Saturn vehicle.

There are many other compact sedans available that offer better value for your money. I had a few issues with my Ion, which I bought new in 2003. I experienced the 'no start' issue, the OEM tires were not great, the back brakes were faulty, and there were numerous issues with the FWD linkage. Additionally, the engine and road noise were terrible, and the mileage was disappointing for this engine (22 HWY in MN winter, 25 HWY in summer). The interior materials were also not of the highest quality. My friend purchased a Corolla for a similar price a few months after I got my Ion, and it was superior in every way. I regretted my decision until I traded it in for a new Mazda6 this year.

Owned since 8/07. Took some time to adjust to. However, the gear shifting can be a bit awkward compared to a Honda or Toyota. On the bright side, it has a great turning radius. Unfortunately, there is a chronic ignition switch problem that shows up in winter. Additionally, the wipers are made of plastic and are very delicate in cold weather with snow or ice. The fabric is also cheap and stains easily. Lastly, the seats are not all that comfortable. Despite these setbacks, I still like the car a lot but have been let down more than once.

When I first bought the car, I was really excited about it, maybe just because it was my first car. However, I've had a few issues with it since then. The locking mechanism fell into the door, and I had to replace the ignition switch, starter, ECU, and battery at 30k miles for no apparent reason. The shift lock solenoid also needs replacing, or the key won't turn all the way back. Even after the signal assembly was replaced, it's still not perfect. While it's been frustrating, I'm hopeful that I can find a solution. I'm considering my options and looking forward to finding a car that better suits my needs. While I may not buy a Saturn again, I'm grateful for the experience and the lessons I've learned.
