The Hyundai Veloster (Korean: 현대 벨로스터, romanized: Hyeondae Belloseuteo) is a compact car first produced in 2011 by Hyundai, with sales beginning in South Korea on March 10, 2011, and in Canada and the United States since the fall of 2011. In South Korea, it was marketed under Hyundai's 'Premium Youth Lab'. It was unveiled on January 10, 2011, at the Detroit Auto Show, and fills the void left when Hyundai discontinued the Hyundai Tiburon after the 2008 model year.

The car differs from most other hatchbacks with its asymmetrical door configuration, featuring one large door on the driver side and two smaller doors on the passenger side. This configuration is more common on commercial vehicles and minivans. In North America, the Veloster was equipped with Blue Link, a new telematics system which will eventually be standard on all Hyundai models. The system is comparable to OnStar in General Motors vehicles, and provides customers with automatic crash notification, vehicle diagnostics, and remote control of vehicle features, among others.

Development and early concepts

HND-3 concept (2007)

The Hyundai HND-3 concept was the third sport compact concept car styled at Hyundai's Design and Technical Center. It included 2.0-liter DOHC Theta inline four-cylinder engine and five-speed automatic transmission. The concept car became a Veloster Coupe in 2011.

The car concept was unveiled at the 2007 Seoul Motor Show, with the final production version released on January 11 at the Detroit Auto Show. The Veloster is developed under the codename FS, and is built on a modified version of the Cee'd's front-wheel drive platform.

ENGINE,FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2024-08-01
  • VIN: KMHTC6AE0GU
  • Components: ENGINE,FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM
  • Summary: Shortly after finishing major repairs at my local dealer, I started to expirience, what I believe, now, to be a "low-end engine knock". Engine knock can usually occur due to oil starvation, where the connecting rod bearings are worn and debris enters the engine. So, I brought my car back to the dealer to ask them what this strange noise was I was hearing; I asked them if it could be the brand new clutch, or their equipment they left in the engine bay for me. They gave me an answer and it was to not drive the car anymore. One employee of the dealer even suggested "wrapping it around a telephone pole"... They told me what the repairs would cost and I had not qualified for a warranty extention so I left. I acquired a definitive diagnostic elsewhere and was shown the gravity of the situation. My oil filter had caught pieces of the engine and it was dubbed an engine knock. This incident took me completely by surprise. I regularly changed my oil and never saw my levels get so low that they would be considered empty. I have only owned the car for 5 years and it being only 8 years old, I was hoping to enjoy the driving expirience for years to come. That sensation has been replaced with apprehension and possible engine fire... how do I afford to buy a new car every 5 years if I can't drive the one I have now??

The dealer informed the contact that 2 quarts of oil was added to the vehicle. The vehicle was then taken to an independent mechanic, where the contact was informed that the engine was overfilled with oil. The mechanic diagnosed the vehicle and determined that the failure was related to the knock sensor. The vehicle was then taken to another dealer, Great Lakes Hyundai of Dublin (2441 Billingsley Rd, Columbus, OH 43235), where it was diagnosed. The dealer informed the contact that no engine failure was found; however, the catalytic convertor needed to be replaced. The vehicle was not repaired. ENGINE PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2024-07-28
  • VIN: KMHTC6AD6GU
  • Components: ENGINE
  • Summary: On May 13, 2024 my car had it's motor replaced. This was done at no charge by Hyundai of Wesley Chapel (Not where I bought it). The motor was replaced because of a recall (Product Improvement Campaign 966/ Knock Sensor Detection System). On July 28, 2024 my car engine ( the new one they had given me 10 weeks earlier) overheated and broke down. We had the car towed back to Hyundai of Wesley Chapel. They were unable to determine the cause of the engine breaking down, other than that is was leaking coolant. Hyundai is asking me to pay for a diagnostic test, estimated at between $3,000 and $4,000 to determine the cause. We do not want to do that and don't believe we should be held responsible for this cost. We have not been provided with a loaner car. This is a big inconvenience that we need resolved.

ENGINE PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2024-04-03
  • VIN: KMHTC6AE5GU
  • Components: ENGINE
  • Summary: After noticing a significant shortage of oil, I took my 2016 HYUNDAI Veloster Turbo to get an oil change. There continued to be persistent low oil in my vehicle even after an oil change. I put things under my car to make sure there was no leak and the vehicle maintenance advisor informed me there is no external leak present when getting the oil change. I drove a week and my oil dipstick was already showing significantly low oil in the engine. After contacting Hyundai about this issue, they said I would need to go through the same process with them and they would not be held responsible for billing. This comes at a time where Technical Service Bulletin #23-EM-007H was recently released in December 2023 applying to 4-Cylinder Gasoline Engines. I’m concerned about the safety of myself and others due to the probability of a fire, however I have already paid out of pocket for maintenance that had diagnosed the issue.

ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,ENGINE PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2023-12-07
  • VIN: KMHTC6AD0GU
  • Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,ENGINE
  • Summary: 02/??/22 immediately after purchase, the vehicle’s alternator died and had to be replaced. 12/06/22 catalytic converter blew with no warning while driving. Car was towed to mechanic. 12/07/22 repairs were approved, costing $1,748.66. Shop informed us this repair was due to a recall (campaign 22-01-023H-2) From 12/22 through 07-23 I opened many cases with Hyundai, who closed cases without explanation. During this time I am required to refill vehicle’s oil every month to stop engine knocking and prevent break down. 06/23 I was finally able to set an appointment to start the first step of the recall. 07/10/23 I arrived for my appointment to start oil monitoring, but was told to reschedule and come back later. 07/19/23 I arrived for my rescheduled appointment. Dealer made me pay for oil that was used and instructed me to return in 1,000 miles. After 1,000 miles I returned and left my car at the dealer for a few days. When I returned Hyundai staff told me the recall was “only for the original owner.” I was also told the recall was “already fixed” and there was “nothing wrong” with the car. I self advocated, stating again that the oil was depleting rapidly and what I had gone through. Staff told me to “drive the car until it breaks down, then Hyundai will cover the costs of repair.” I mentioned how that is unsafe, but was sent away. 11/24/23 vehicle completely broke down out of state in a dark and unfamiliar area at nighttime. Vehicle was towed, requiring engine repairs. 11/27/23 I opened a case with Hyundai regarding these issues. A few weeks later I was told the case was closed since they “had to believe the dealer and not the client.” 02/05/24 alternator died, vehicle required a tow to the mechanic. 02/06/24 repairs were approved for almost $1,000. I do not feel safe driving this vehicle as it is unreliable, breaks down without warning lights- which only appear after break down, and the manufacturer refuses to take accountability for these issues.

ELECTRICAL SYSTEM PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2021-04-13
  • VIN: KMHTC6AD7GU
  • Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM
  • Summary: I have done a lot of research on my car when it started having issues with major oil burning/consumption (I took it in because I had an engine recall and they did their testing and said no recall for my car). And since 2021, I haven't had a consistent working heater and a/c because a wiring issue. Which I have spoke to hyundai on a few occasions and told me "you just need a new hvac control head unit" which I had already replaced. The harness connector was fried, had that replaced by someone I know. May be not to standards, but it would usually work with most vehicles. I have replaced the head unit 3 times now, and the wiring harness 3 times. And it eventually fries the knob control for my blower speed. I have an 16 month old child and its a safety issue. The wires keep frying (my resistor has been replaced a few times thinking that was the issue), telling me the wires are not capable of the output for something so simple. In my research, this has happened to thousands of other velosters around the year of mine. And one was a mechanic and said it is a safety issue. It can catch on fire, and this should be a recall on all cars. I've also read how hyundai has told people with recalls, their cars were fine (after testing) then the engine blows and they're incompetent and so not care to help its consumers. Please help me somehow?

ENGINE PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2023-10-17
  • VIN: KMHTC6ADXGU
  • Components: ENGINE
  • Summary: After previous complaint I filed, my engine continued to decline. Began burning a quart of oil approximately every 240 miles and has now almost completely lost power. It will not go above 25 miles per hour. I can not drive it anywhere except within two miles of my house where the speed limit is 25mph. EXCEEDINGLY DANGEROUS! It will die while driving and crank right back up but then die again. As contained in my previous complaint - Check engine light has been flashing since last December, Oil light comes on approximately every 240 miles. Other model years of this car have been recalled due to oil issues - but not this one. Yes the engine has been inspected and everyone agrees the engine is bad but Hyundai refuses to do anything about it due to the car not being included in the previous recall years. PLEASE inspect it. Anytime you want. It's not like I can drive it anywhere. I would drive it straight to a junk yard, but am still paying on it. You should know, if you don't already, that Hyundai is regularly giving owners of cars that have been included in the recall, the runaround on repairing anything. There are multiple facebook groups with literally THOUSANDS of people complaining about the same or similar issues with their Hyundai vehicles and nothing is being done. The MOST disreputable company I have ever dealt with - from the dealer all the way up to corporate. READ SOME OF THESE STORIES TO GET A TRUE UNDERSTANDING OF THE PROBLEM... POWER TRAIN,ENGINE PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2023-09-08

  • Components: POWER TRAIN,ENGINE
  • Summary: Unknown Regular oil changes, cranked my car up one morning and it started knocking, I have been in a rental for 2 weeks now and paying out pocket as a single mother in grad school. The dealers excuse of not diagnosing the car sooner, is that their schedule is busy after arguing with the extended warranty company about my coverage. I booked their next soonest appointment to be told we'll see if we can get it looked at that day. I believe they're hiding the fact that my bricks falls under recall 198 and do not want to admit it.

Negative 2016 Hyundai Veloster car reviews

  1. Lukas Kihn 2024-11-24

The car was a bit difficult to handle, and I had to push the pedal hard to move forward, which caused some discomfort in my knee after a 12-minute drive. The car's visibility to the back and sides was poor due to the narrow windows, and I had to look out half through the sloping skylight. The door-locking system was primitive, but the brakes were very good. Although the car looks cool, I personally would not buy it, and I am looking forward to returning it to the rental agency. If you have driven a smoother and better car in the past, you may find this car unacceptable. However, if you are young and have no experience with a better car, you may not notice the difference.

  2. Dereck Aufderhar 2024-11-18

Hyundai must address the known transmission issue with the 7-speed DCT. As a car owner, I have experienced significant problems with this vehicle. It is imperative that Hyundai takes responsibility and resolves this issue promptly.

  3. Braeden White 2024-09-05

I own a 2016 Veloster Turbo with the 7-speed DCT transmission. Although I adore my car and find it incredibly enjoyable to drive when the transmission is functioning properly, I have been experiencing some issues with it lately. Specifically, the car fails to accelerate despite the RPMs increasing. I have reached out to Hyundai multiple times regarding this matter and am currently awaiting their response. The transmission issues have caused the car to stall and have nearly resulted in a few accidents. On the other hand, my fiance owns a VT of a different year with a 6-speed DCT and has had no issues with it whatsoever.

  4. Rashad Leuschke 2024-08-07

The Veloster has been experiencing issues with surging and hesitation, particularly when accelerating or merging onto the freeway. Despite my attempts to have the issue resolved, Hyundai has informed me that this is a normal occurrence and cannot be fixed. Additionally, I have noticed some interior problems such as carpet coming up, floor mats falling apart, leather peeling off the steering wheel and shifter, and a few loose plastic roof parts. Due to these issues, I requested to return the car after only 3 weeks of ownership. It is clear that the Veloster and Hyundai have not met my expectations in terms of quality and reliability.

  5. Roger Johnston 2024-06-11

undefinedI'm a huge fan of the Hyundai product, especially considering the warranty they share with Kia, which is second-best in the entire auto industry, only behind the 72 thousand mile warranty Volkswagen provides. However, I do hope that Hyundai will redesign the Veloster turbo and the Veloster N with a much nicer interior, better seats, and quality materials and craftsmanship. By the way, did you know that you can buy a Veloster N for 22 or 23 thousand dollars on autotrader.com? This is a great opportunity to get a good deal on a car that was previously priced at 28, 29, or even 30 thousand dollars. It seems that they aren't selling as well as they thought they would, but I still believe in the quality of the product.

I'm glad to hear that you're enjoying the car so far!

I'm already close to 11000 on the odometer in this white jewel! Last time, I complained about the transmission, which was a 7-speed DCT, and they had a recall on it! I went to the shop 2 hours later and they updated the transmission, and wow!!! It's awesome!! The shifts are quick and non-hesitant! The car is great, folks, roomy enough and still has great handling! The steering feel could be better, but it's not a deal breaker! The snow in Utah was bad this year, but it handled it just fine! The fuel economy is better than average, even with my lead foot! However, the interior bits scratch easily, which is a shame. But overall, it's been a great buy and choice so far!!

While I only had the 4 cylinder base model, this car was so much fun to drive! I had a manual and it hugged the road, hung low to the ground... and turned heads. Unfortunately, a tree fell on her and crushed the sunroof, top, and part of the passenger side door. Our insurance totaled her out. She will definitely be missed.

I recently test drove a range of cars including the Mustang EcoBoost, Camaro V6, and Honda Accord Coupe with CVT Paddle shifting. While I was looking for a car that was fun, exciting, fast, quick, and had tons of mods available, I found that the Veloster Turbo 2014 was the perfect fit for me. The last customer had modified it with BOV & Intake, which gave it an amazing sound and quickness. After doing some research, I found that the Veloster had everything I wanted and more, and at a great price. I purchased a 2016 Veloster Ultra Black with 7k on it, and it was by far the best choice. The car is incredibly fast and small, making it a joy to drive. I love the fact that Hyundai will cover the engine and transmission for 10 years and 100k miles. The gas mileage is also great, and I now spend less than $20 a week on gas. The car has made my commute to work much more enjoyable, taking only 15 to 20 minutes instead of the previous 30 to 40 minutes. Although I have since traded it in for a Lexus ES350 F Sport, I still have fond memories of my Veloster and would recommend it to anyone looking for a fun and reliable car.

The ride is a bit rough, but it handles very well.
