Common Lexus Rx350 problems
The Lexus RX 350 is a popular luxury SUV, but like any vehicle, it has its share of common problems. Here are some of the most frequently reported issues based on search results:
- Faulty Camshaft Timing Oil Control Valves: This issue, affecting models produced from 2007 to 2013, results in repeated illumination of the Check Engine Light, traction control, and AWD lights. It is caused by faulty camshaft timing oil control valves, which can lead to engine damage if not addressed.
- AC Issues: Another common problem with the Lexus RX 350 is A/C issues, which can manifest as an error message and A/C vents that fail to blow cold air.
- Dashboard Cracking: The first model year of the Lexus RX 350, 2007, had a plastics issue with the dashboard, causing it to crack. This issue was resolved in subsequent releases but can still be a cosmetic concern.
- Steering Problems: In the early releases of the Lexus RX 350, the rack and pinion sometimes start to fail, which is both a safety concern and a relatively expensive fix.
- Battery Failures: Some Lexus RX 350 owners have reported battery failures, though this is a less expensive problem compared to others.
- Defective Rain Sensors: This issue, affecting the windshield wipers, can cause problems in rainy conditions.
- Illuminated Check Engine Light: This issue can be caused by various problems, including faulty oxygen sensors, catalytic converter failure, or issues with the fuel injection system.
- Transmission Failure: Some Lexus RX 350 owners have reported transmission failure, which can be a costly repair.
- Shift Lag: This issue, affecting the 2008 RX 350, can cause a delay in shifting gears, which can be both inconvenient and potentially dangerous in certain driving situations.
In conclusion, while the Lexus RX 350 is a popular and well-regarded luxury SUV, it is not without its common problems. Owners should be aware of these issues and consider them when purchasing or maintaining their vehicles.

- VIN: 2T2ZZMCA9JC

- Summary: 1. At [XXX] on [XXX], I was pulling into my gym's parking lot, when I stepped on the break to park my car, instead of stopping, the car accelerates rapidly and crashed through the other side of the sidewalk where there were light pole and cement walls, throwing me forward and backward with seat belt on, I was in total shock! 2. My insurance sent a field inspector to the body shop 2X in hope to repair my car but ended up declaring it a Total Loss. 3. Lexus said they would send a field tech to get the EDR (Event Data Recorder) data from my 2018 Lexus RX350 within 30 days, but the results won't be available for 30-45 days after that. Lexus's slow response to this accident concerns and disappoints me b/c it was a serious crash that Lexus should treat it seriously and promptly. 4. The disbelief of a 'young' car with only 12297 miles could have issues like this puzzled me and drove me to do a lot of online research, then I came across this site [XXX] which contains an article titled '10 Common Problems of A Lexus RX350'. Problem #5 described exactly what had happened to me: 'ONE RECURRING PROBLEM THIS CAR HAS IS THAT THE SYSTEM MALFUNCTIONS SEVERELY. THIS TYPICALLY HAPPENES WHEN THE DRIVER IS TRYING TO PARK THE VEHICLE. REPORTS PAINT THE SAME PICTURES REPEATEDLY: THE DRIVER IS PULLING INTO A PARKING LOT, THEY PUSH THE BREAK PEDAL, AND INSTEAD OF STOPPING, THE CAR ACELERATES RAPIDLY, WHICH RESULTS IN A CRASH." Based on this article, it seems that Lexus should have issued a recall, but no! 5. The strange thing was that NO airbags were exploded/activated, yet the vehicle was damaged to beyond repair, it makes me wonder if there was an issue with the airbags too. If this incident had occurred at an intersection, I dare not imagine the outcome...I could have been killed or critically injured along with other innocent people on the road. I am very traumatized by the whole experience and sadly, the feeling seems to have gotten worse as time goes. - Date Of Incident: 2024-10-07
- Date Complaint: 2024-10-08
- VIN: JTJDGKCA9J2
- Components: SERVICE BRAKES
- Summary: I am writing to raise a serious concern regarding a issue with my 2018 Lexus RX450hL involving the brake actuator. Since purchasing the vehicle at 63,000 miles, I have noticed hissing, clicking, and squeaking noises when applying the brakes. As the mileage increased to 83,000, these noises have worsened, becoming unbearable. In addition, I am experiencing a shaky driver-side mirror and a rusting hood latch, both of which present safety concerns. For a vehicle under 5 years old , I believe these problems do not reflect the quality I expected, particularly given the premium price I paid. According to Lexus' Technical Service Bulletin (TSB) #L-SB-0032-23 Rev, issued in October 2023, which addresses squawk or knock noises from the engine compartment when the brake pedal is pressed or released, affecting models like the RX450hL. My vehicle exhibits symptoms similar to those described in the TSB. The vehicle was regularly maintained by the previous owner at Lexus of Thousand Oaks and Woodland Hills. Despite this, the major part like brake actuator has failed prematurely. Given Lexus' reputation as a luxury brand, it is unacceptable that such a critical component would fail before the vehicle is 5 years old or has reached 100,000 miles. The combination of the brake actuator defect, the shaky mirror, and the rusting hood latch is disappointing, especially for a vehicle of this caliber. When I initially contacted Lexus Customer Service, I was also dealing with rusting parts and a failing brake booster. Lexus of Cerritos provided a repair estimate of around $5,000 for brake actuator. I was advised to reach out to Lexus Customer Service after my request for a good faith repair was denied due to the inability to obtain the complete maintenance history. However, I have since confirmed with the previous owner and Lexus that the vehicle was regularly serviced. I am also aware that Lexus has issued brake actuator-related recalls for several models.

- Summary: 2015 Lexus RX450H with less than 60,000 miles Electronic Power Steering Motor needs repair or replacement. The Electronic Steering Motor has an internal 3 piece star-shaped green plastic gear in between two metal pieces used as a bushing/damper. That green plastic gear has become dry, hard, dehydrated, and has crumbled inside the electronic power steering motor. Diagnostic indicators include rattling and vibrations emanating from the steering column that sounds like something is broken inside the steering assembly. Which it apparently is. Moreover, I am particularly concerned about the implications of this denial. The faulty component in the electronic power steering system poses a significant risk, including the potential for complete loss of steering control. This not only jeopardizes my safety but could also lead to further damage to my vehicle or even bodily injury. Given these circumstances, I believe it is imperative that this matter be addressed with urgency.

- Summary: My car has an oil leak from the timing chain cover gasket that was discovered by an independent mechanic at 37,465 miles. The dealer confirmed the leak on June 14, 2024 during a recall replacement of the fuel pump. The repair is very expensive and the car is no longer under warranty. This is the second occurrence of this same issue. The first occurred in April 2021 at 24,192 miles and was repaired by the dealer under warranty. There were no warning lamps or messages of the problem but there was oil on the ground where I park. The car is available for inspection. An internet search confirms that this is a known and common problem with the Lexus RX350 (and specifically the 2017 model) for many owners with some occurring more than once as in my case.

- Summary: I bought this car in March 2020. We took it to the Kingsport, TN Lexus dealer Sept. 14, 2020 for several warranty issues and a recall factory interior front door handle replacement. Today, 9/3/24 the front driver’s side interior door handle broke and the door cannot be opened from inside the car. Called local dealer who said that it was guaranteed for 12 months or 12,000 miles. I find this completely unacceptable. I am [XXX] and have driven cars for over 40 years and I have never had a car handle break. For this handle to basically last four years is unacceptable and unsafe for any Lexus driver. At this point I question as to whether the repair was actually made. If in fact replaced, I am shocked by the lack of quality in a repair that was to have fixed a serious issue. Driving a car when you cannot open the door is not something I recommend to anyone! I have called Lexus National customer service and they have opened a case. I do plan to have this repaired and I do not plan to pay for what I consider to be very low quality part replacement. - VIN: 2T2BGMCAXHC

- Summary: When checking the emergency SOS function in my car I found that it did not work. I called Lexus support and was told that the following safety systems would no longer be operative: Lexus Enform Safety Connect including Automatic Collision Notification; Enhanced Roadside Assistance; Emergency Assistance Button and Stolen Vehicle Locator; Lexus Enform Remote including Remote Engine Start/Stop, Door Lock/Unlock, Vehicle Finder, Guest Driver Monitor, Vehicle Status and Alerts, Key Fob Remote Start, and Integration with Alexa and The Google Assistant; Lexus Enform Destination Assist including 24-hour live response center agent; Lexus Enform Service Connect including Vehicle Health Report, Vehicle Alerts, and Maintenance Alerts; These include safety systems that I rely on, especially when driving on interstate highways, and were included when I purchased my car. I had no warning that the services would cease to function in October of this year. Lexus states that these systems will no longer function because telecommunications providers will no longer support 3G service. This is certainly a safety issue for me and for other drivers and I believe that Lexus should be required to modify the hardware/software in these vehicles to function in a 4G/5G environment. Lexus representatives state that Lexus has no plans to correct these safety issues. I am requesting that NHTSA review this matter as a highway safety issue.
Lexus Rx350 2016
- Date Of Incident: 2024-07-27
- Date Complaint: 2024-09-01
- VIN: 2T2BGMCA9GC
- Components: POWER TRAIN
- Summary: Upon parking after 20-mile drive, severe leak of transmission oil from transmission oil cooler area, no warning messages/lights or fault codes present. No evidence of leak at starting point for drive, was sudden failure internal to transmission cooler with no evidence of impact/vibration damage or corrosion; failure was perhaps at welds of fins to tubing. Leaking oil creates fire and slip hazard, lack of any kind of warning to driver would have allowed continued driving until transmission failed except for luck that this was short trip. Vehicle has never been damaged in a crash, has been carefully inspected and maintained since purchase new. This is not a wear item and should never fail without external damage or corrosion, certainly not at 45,000 miles. Difficult to believe that this anything other than a manufacturing defect on this early production (VIN ending 002034) vehicle. Repaired by Lexus dealer with Lexus covering half of cost as “goodwill” (cost to me at ~$1,050 incl. towing), although dealer attempted to return vehicle without having reinstalled air duct and lower shroud.

- Summary: The hood latch and cable malfunctioned three times in one year. Once in January 2024 (I replaced the latch); once in July 2024 (the dealer recommended to eventually replace the cable, but was able to fix it); and most recently on [XXX] (the dealer identified the cable was faulty and needed to be replaced). The hood would close but not all the way and the hood release had no tension. There was prior warning or symptoms prior to the hood lock failure. All the records for this is with the service department of Pohanka Lexus in Chantilly, VA. I attached the most recent service visit. I took it to the Lexus dealer service center each time. I am getting it fixed this weekend by another service shop (because Lexus charges too much). This was extremely dangerous because if the hood is not secure, it could open at any time while driving and cause an accident, especially at high speeds. There is the potential that if the hood does not lock when closed after it opens, that it could possibly fly open while the car is in motion. - Summary: * Our 2008 Lexus RX 350 dashboard is cracking: areas of safety concern are the cracks around the ignition switch, the air bags, and the instrument panel. * There are cracks all around the ignition switch which places it in jeopardy of malfunctioning to include releasing dangerous fumes and dangerous fragments (scrapnel), and/or falling out. * The air bags are a grave concern as they may not deploy due to the cracks in the dashboard. * The instrument panel has a backup camera that may also be negatively impacted. There was a safety recall on these dashboards, and Lexus claimed that they were waiting on parts and that we would be contacted. We were never contacted by Lexus, and when we contacted them on several occasions, Lexus told us that they were not going to replace the dashboard. The cracks in my dashboard are extremely serious concerns for my family's safety, which is why this vehicle is only used if there's an in an emergency due to the safety concerns. We live in south Georgia, and the dashboard began cracking / melting as a result of heat and humidity. Lexus has refused to honor the agreement that it made in accordance with its "Warranty Enhancement Program." Our last case number with Lexus is [XXX] on [XXX], and we have not heard back from Lexus' vehicle protection. The numbers that we contacted were 800-448-1505 and 800-255-3987. I've had a great experience with Lexus dealerships. They really make an effort to ensure your comfort, even while you're spending money. I love driving my SUV and I often receive compliments on it. Some drivers argue whether a Lexus is comparable to a Mercedes, but in my opinion, they are both high-end cars. However, I prefer Lexus because it requires very little maintenance - just tire rotations and oil changes. Mercedes Benz, on the other hand, tends to spend a lot of time in the shop.

We purchased our 2009 RX when it was three years old with 50,000 miles. Throughout our ownership, we have been diligent with maintenance, performing it religiously every 3000 miles. The only repair issue we encountered was a water pump at a little over 100,000 miles. The RX is incredibly comfortable, reliable, and peppy. Two minor issues arose late in its life (150,000 plus), including the typical deteriorating dash and some paint below the rear window. We ultimately traded it in at 165,000 plus and received a very reasonable trade-in value. Overall, our ownership experience was excellent!

I hope you enjoyed your test drive! While the quality of the car is impressive, I understand your preference for a Turbo version with better gas mileage. It's important to find a car that meets all of your needs. I appreciate your honest feedback on the styling of the Lexus SUVs. It's true that the BMW X3, Acura RDX, Mercedes GLC, and Audi Q5 have more attractive designs. I can see how the front grille on the Lexus may not be to everyone's taste. Thank you for sharing your thoughts with me!

Congratulations on your new Lexus RX 350! It's great to hear that you're enjoying your third one. The 2017 model sounds like a fantastic upgrade with its updated design and additional features. It's impressive that Lexus vehicles are built to last without requiring much maintenance. Regular oil changes and service can keep them running for over 20 years! Not only are they reliable, but they're also cost-effective in the long run. The F Sport model sounds like a lot of fun with its extra safety features and technology. It's no wonder that you're considering getting another one in the future. Thank you for sharing your positive experience with us!

I'm really glad to hear that you're enjoying this vehicle so far. While it may take some time to get used to the turbo charge 4 cyl, it's great to hear that you don't have any major complaints at this point.

Let me start my review by saying that I loved my 2010 RX 350.Why haven't I read that the 2013 RX 350 has a much stiffer suspension and harder seats.Even my husband who doesn't care about comfort in car has noticed that the seats are hard. I leased the 2013 RX 350 non sport model.NON Sport and it has a very harsh bouncy ride. I so wish that I had not turned in my 2010 for this model.

The base model of the car comes with standard seating material, but there is an option to upgrade to leather. However, some customers may find the seating material to be of lower quality. The panoramic moonroof has a limited opening of about 10 inches, which may not meet the expectations of some customers, especially considering the price. The availability of external and interior colors may be limited and confusing. The engine noise may be noticeable from a standstill, which may not be ideal for a luxury vehicle. The car features a large GPS map, but some customers may find it distracting as it sits up high on the dash. Overall, while the car has some nice features, it may not meet everyone's expectations of a luxury vehicle. The writer ultimately decided to purchase a Cadillac XT5 instead, which they found to be of higher quality than the Lexus at a similar price point.

I've had my 2010 RX 350 for about 4 months now and unfortunately, I've had to go back to the dealership 5 times for 3 different defects on the new model. These include Navigation, A/C and Radio problems, which all have TSB's issued by Lexus now. Additionally, I've experienced some exterior defects, such as the driver side bumper popping out of place during long drives due to wind damage. While it's frustrating to have to wait until my next service appointment to have it checked out, I'm hopeful that the dealership will be able to resolve these issues. Despite these setbacks, I still appreciate the quality and luxury that Lexus offers.

The car is great overall, with reliability being a major selling point for me. However, there are a few minor areas where Lexus has missed the mark. For example, the swing-out pockets on each front door are not very practical as the contents tend to spill out when the pocket is opened. Additionally, the dash-mounted cup holder is not very versatile and can only hold cups. The center console lid also doesn't fully open, making it difficult to access items inside. The overhead switches for interior lights and garage door openers are flush, which can make them difficult to locate by touch alone. The voice commands for Bluetooth phone can also be challenging to use. Finally, the climate control system can be a bit confusing to operate. However, despite these minor issues, I still find the car to be a great choice. I do have some concerns about the compact spare tire that comes with the car, as it has a top speed of only 55 mph and can be dangerous on western state freeways. Additionally, the full-sized flat tire will not fit in the space occupied by the compact spare in the trunk, which can be inconvenient. Overall, I would still recommend this car to others.I understand that many other cars may use compact spares, but for a luxury vehicle, I would expect more attention to detail. Additionally, I believe that a premium car should come with a better audio system, and if an optional premium audio system is offered, it should be considered. While the car is comfortable, drives well, and handles nicely, it can be a bit bouncy when going around corners with bumps in the road. Since my last review, I have not warmed up to the interior due to the many little annoyances that add up to my dissatisfaction with owning the car. For example, the door pocket was slightly open and snagged my pants cuff, and the seat pockets on the back of the driver and passenger side barely open and have hard covers that are uncomfortable against the knees of back seat passengers. The rear seat door pockets virtually hold nothing but a small water bottle. My first RX was a 99, and it was the best car I've ever owned, far superior to the 2010 RX. The smooth ride of the 99 RX-300 was a dream, and the A/C system was flawless. The center console did not extend to the dash, but had two roomy slide-out drawers. I am due to buy another car this year, and while the RX is still on my list, I will also take a look at the GX. If it doesn't fit the bill, I will consider other brands of cars. The only selling point for me with another Lexus is that in 20 years of driving Lexus cars, I've only had one significant mechanical failure. Update: I sold my previous car and bought a new RX 350L. While many annoyances have been solved, some still remain, and the spare tire is still a total failure. However, I like it better than the 2010 model.

The vibration issue is most likely caused by the muffler, resulting in a bad transmission. It is unfortunate that Lexus has not taken any action to address this issue. However, it is important to note that Lexus vehicles are known for their exceptional quality and reliability. While some may prefer other brands, it is important to consider all factors before making a purchase decision. It is also worth noting that dealerships may not always disclose potential issues with a vehicle, so it is important to do your own research and ask questions. Overall, Lexus remains a top choice for many discerning drivers.
