Common Lexus Rx350 problems

The Lexus RX 350 is a popular luxury SUV, but like any vehicle, it has its share of common problems. Here are some of the most frequently reported issues based on search results:

  • Faulty Camshaft Timing Oil Control Valves: This issue, affecting models produced from 2007 to 2013, results in repeated illumination of the Check Engine Light, traction control, and AWD lights. It is caused by faulty camshaft timing oil control valves, which can lead to engine damage if not addressed.
  • AC Issues: Another common problem with the Lexus RX 350 is A/C issues, which can manifest as an error message and A/C vents that fail to blow cold air.
  • Dashboard Cracking: The first model year of the Lexus RX 350, 2007, had a plastics issue with the dashboard, causing it to crack. This issue was resolved in subsequent releases but can still be a cosmetic concern.
  • Steering Problems: In the early releases of the Lexus RX 350, the rack and pinion sometimes start to fail, which is both a safety concern and a relatively expensive fix.
  • Battery Failures: Some Lexus RX 350 owners have reported battery failures, though this is a less expensive problem compared to others.
  • Defective Rain Sensors: This issue, affecting the windshield wipers, can cause problems in rainy conditions.
  • Illuminated Check Engine Light: This issue can be caused by various problems, including faulty oxygen sensors, catalytic converter failure, or issues with the fuel injection system.
  • Transmission Failure: Some Lexus RX 350 owners have reported transmission failure, which can be a costly repair.
  • Shift Lag: This issue, affecting the 2008 RX 350, can cause a delay in shifting gears, which can be both inconvenient and potentially dangerous in certain driving situations.

In conclusion, while the Lexus RX 350 is a popular and well-regarded luxury SUV, it is not without its common problems. Owners should be aware of these issues and consider them when purchasing or maintaining their vehicles.

  • Date Complaint: 2024-10-23
  • Crash: 1
  • VIN: 2T2ZZMCA9JC
  • Components: VEHICLE SPEED CONTROL,SERVICE BRAKES
  • Summary: 1. At [XXX] on [XXX], I was pulling into my gym's parking lot, when I stepped on the break to park my car, instead of stopping, the car accelerates rapidly and crashed through the other side of the sidewalk where there were light pole and cement walls, throwing me forward and backward with seat belt on, I was in total shock! 2. My insurance sent a field inspector to the body shop 2X in hope to repair my car but ended up declaring it a Total Loss. 3. Lexus said they would send a field tech to get the EDR (Event Data Recorder) data from my 2018 Lexus RX350 within 30 days, but the results won't be available for 30-45 days after that. Lexus's slow response to this accident concerns and disappoints me b/c it was a serious crash that Lexus should treat it seriously and promptly. 4. The disbelief of a 'young' car with only 12297 miles could have issues like this puzzled me and drove me to do a lot of online research, then I came across this site [XXX] which contains an article titled '10 Common Problems of A Lexus RX350'. Problem #5 described exactly what had happened to me: 'ONE RECURRING PROBLEM THIS CAR HAS IS THAT THE SYSTEM MALFUNCTIONS SEVERELY. THIS TYPICALLY HAPPENES WHEN THE DRIVER IS TRYING TO PARK THE VEHICLE. REPORTS PAINT THE SAME PICTURES REPEATEDLY: THE DRIVER IS PULLING INTO A PARKING LOT, THEY PUSH THE BREAK PEDAL, AND INSTEAD OF STOPPING, THE CAR ACELERATES RAPIDLY, WHICH RESULTS IN A CRASH." Based on this article, it seems that Lexus should have issued a recall, but no! 5. The strange thing was that NO airbags were exploded/activated, yet the vehicle was damaged to beyond repair, it makes me wonder if there was an issue with the airbags too. If this incident had occurred at an intersection, I dare not imagine the outcome...I could have been killed or critically injured along with other innocent people on the road. I am very traumatized by the whole experience and sadly, the feeling seems to have gotten worse as time goes. • Date Of Incident: 2024-10-07
  • Date Complaint: 2024-10-08
  • VIN: JTJDGKCA9J2
  • Components: SERVICE BRAKES
  • Summary: I am writing to raise a serious concern regarding a issue with my 2018 Lexus RX450hL involving the brake actuator. Since purchasing the vehicle at 63,000 miles, I have noticed hissing, clicking, and squeaking noises when applying the brakes. As the mileage increased to 83,000, these noises have worsened, becoming unbearable. In addition, I am experiencing a shaky driver-side mirror and a rusting hood latch, both of which present safety concerns. For a vehicle under 5 years old , I believe these problems do not reflect the quality I expected, particularly given the premium price I paid. According to Lexus' Technical Service Bulletin (TSB) #L-SB-0032-23 Rev, issued in October 2023, which addresses squawk or knock noises from the engine compartment when the brake pedal is pressed or released, affecting models like the RX450hL. My vehicle exhibits symptoms similar to those described in the TSB. The vehicle was regularly maintained by the previous owner at Lexus of Thousand Oaks and Woodland Hills. Despite this, the major part like brake actuator has failed prematurely. Given Lexus' reputation as a luxury brand, it is unacceptable that such a critical component would fail before the vehicle is 5 years old or has reached 100,000 miles. The combination of the brake actuator defect, the shaky mirror, and the rusting hood latch is disappointing, especially for a vehicle of this caliber. When I initially contacted Lexus Customer Service, I was also dealing with rusting parts and a failing brake booster. Lexus of Cerritos provided a repair estimate of around $5,000 for brake actuator. I was advised to reach out to Lexus Customer Service after my request for a good faith repair was denied due to the inability to obtain the complete maintenance history. However, I have since confirmed with the previous owner and Lexus that the vehicle was regularly serviced. I am also aware that Lexus has issued brake actuator-related recalls for several models.

  • Date Of Incident: 2024-08-05
  • Date Complaint: 2024-10-05
  • VIN: 2T2BC1BA3FC
  • Components: STEERING
  • Summary: 2015 Lexus RX450H with less than 60,000 miles Electronic Power Steering Motor needs repair or replacement. The Electronic Steering Motor has an internal 3 piece star-shaped green plastic gear in between two metal pieces used as a bushing/damper. That green plastic gear has become dry, hard, dehydrated, and has crumbled inside the electronic power steering motor. Diagnostic indicators include rattling and vibrations emanating from the steering column that sounds like something is broken inside the steering assembly. Which it apparently is. Moreover, I am particularly concerned about the implications of this denial. The faulty component in the electronic power steering system poses a significant risk, including the potential for complete loss of steering control. This not only jeopardizes my safety but could also lead to further damage to my vehicle or even bodily injury. Given these circumstances, I believe it is imperative that this matter be addressed with urgency.

After stopping and exiting the vehicle the fire department was called to the scene and extinguished the flames. During the incident, the vehicle was destroyed and later towed away by the insurance company. No injuries were reported and no police or fire reports were taken. • Date Of Incident: 2024-06-13
  • Date Complaint: 2024-09-08
  • VIN: 2T2ZZMCA5HC

  • Summary: My car has an oil leak from the timing chain cover gasket that was discovered by an independent mechanic at 37,465 miles. The dealer confirmed the leak on June 14, 2024 during a recall replacement of the fuel pump. The repair is very expensive and the car is no longer under warranty. This is the second occurrence of this same issue. The first occurred in April 2021 at 24,192 miles and was repaired by the dealer under warranty. There were no warning lamps or messages of the problem but there was oil on the ground where I park. The car is available for inspection. An internet search confirms that this is a known and common problem with the Lexus RX350 (and specifically the 2017 model) for many owners with some occurring more than once as in my case.

  • Date Complaint: 2024-09-03
  • VIN: 2T2BZMCA1HC
  • Components: UNKNOWN OR OTHER
  • Summary: I bought this car in March 2020. We took it to the Kingsport, TN Lexus dealer Sept. 14, 2020 for several warranty issues and a recall factory interior front door handle replacement. Today, 9/3/24 the front driver’s side interior door handle broke and the door cannot be opened from inside the car. Called local dealer who said that it was guaranteed for 12 months or 12,000 miles. I find this completely unacceptable. I am [XXX] and have driven cars for over 40 years and I have never had a car handle break. For this handle to basically last four years is unacceptable and unsafe for any Lexus driver. At this point I question as to whether the repair was actually made. If in fact replaced, I am shocked by the lack of quality in a repair that was to have fixed a serious issue. Driving a car when you cannot open the door is not something I recommend to anyone! I have called Lexus National customer service and they have opened a case. I do plan to have this repaired and I do not plan to pay for what I consider to be very low quality part replacement. • Date Of Incident: 2024-09-01
  • Date Complaint: 2024-09-01
  • VIN: 2T2BGMCAXHC
  • Components: UNKNOWN OR OTHER
  • Summary: When checking the emergency SOS function in my car I found that it did not work. I called Lexus support and was told that the following safety systems would no longer be operative: Lexus Enform Safety Connect including Automatic Collision Notification; Enhanced Roadside Assistance; Emergency Assistance Button and Stolen Vehicle Locator; Lexus Enform Remote including Remote Engine Start/Stop, Door Lock/Unlock, Vehicle Finder, Guest Driver Monitor, Vehicle Status and Alerts, Key Fob Remote Start, and Integration with Alexa and The Google Assistant; Lexus Enform Destination Assist including 24-hour live response center agent; Lexus Enform Service Connect including Vehicle Health Report, Vehicle Alerts, and Maintenance Alerts; These include safety systems that I rely on, especially when driving on interstate highways, and were included when I purchased my car. I had no warning that the services would cease to function in October of this year. Lexus states that these systems will no longer function because telecommunications providers will no longer support 3G service. This is certainly a safety issue for me and for other drivers and I believe that Lexus should be required to modify the hardware/software in these vehicles to function in a 4G/5G environment. Lexus representatives state that Lexus has no plans to correct these safety issues. I am requesting that NHTSA review this matter as a highway safety issue.
Lexus Rx350 2016
  • Date Of Incident: 2024-07-27
  • Date Complaint: 2024-09-01
  • VIN: 2T2BGMCA9GC
  • Components: POWER TRAIN
  • Summary: Upon parking after 20-mile drive, severe leak of transmission oil from transmission oil cooler area, no warning messages/lights or fault codes present. No evidence of leak at starting point for drive, was sudden failure internal to transmission cooler with no evidence of impact/vibration damage or corrosion; failure was perhaps at welds of fins to tubing. Leaking oil creates fire and slip hazard, lack of any kind of warning to driver would have allowed continued driving until transmission failed except for luck that this was short trip. Vehicle has never been damaged in a crash, has been carefully inspected and maintained since purchase new. This is not a wear item and should never fail without external damage or corrosion, certainly not at 45,000 miles. Difficult to believe that this anything other than a manufacturing defect on this early production (VIN ending 002034) vehicle. Repaired by Lexus dealer with Lexus covering half of cost as “goodwill” (cost to me at ~$1,050 incl. towing), although dealer attempted to return vehicle without having reinstalled air duct and lower shroud.

  • Components: STRUCTURE
  • Summary: The hood latch and cable malfunctioned three times in one year. Once in January 2024 (I replaced the latch); once in July 2024 (the dealer recommended to eventually replace the cable, but was able to fix it); and most recently on [XXX] (the dealer identified the cable was faulty and needed to be replaced). The hood would close but not all the way and the hood release had no tension. There was prior warning or symptoms prior to the hood lock failure. All the records for this is with the service department of Pohanka Lexus in Chantilly, VA. I attached the most recent service visit. I took it to the Lexus dealer service center each time. I am getting it fixed this weekend by another service shop (because Lexus charges too much). This was extremely dangerous because if the hood is not secure, it could open at any time while driving and cause an accident, especially at high speeds. There is the potential that if the hood does not lock when closed after it opens, that it could possibly fly open while the car is in motion. • Summary: * Our 2008 Lexus RX 350 dashboard is cracking: areas of safety concern are the cracks around the ignition switch, the air bags, and the instrument panel. * There are cracks all around the ignition switch which places it in jeopardy of malfunctioning to include releasing dangerous fumes and dangerous fragments (scrapnel), and/or falling out. * The air bags are a grave concern as they may not deploy due to the cracks in the dashboard. * The instrument panel has a backup camera that may also be negatively impacted. There was a safety recall on these dashboards, and Lexus claimed that they were waiting on parts and that we would be contacted. We were never contacted by Lexus, and when we contacted them on several occasions, Lexus told us that they were not going to replace the dashboard. The cracks in my dashboard are extremely serious concerns for my family's safety, which is why this vehicle is only used if there's an in an emergency due to the safety concerns. We live in south Georgia, and the dashboard began cracking / melting as a result of heat and humidity. Lexus has refused to honor the agreement that it made in accordance with its "Warranty Enhancement Program." Our last case number with Lexus is [XXX] on [XXX], and we have not heard back from Lexus' vehicle protection. The numbers that we contacted were 800-448-1505 and 800-255-3987. 1) While the navigation system, adaptive headlights, and rear camera may not meet everyone's needs, there are alternative options available such as Garmin and Jawbone. It's important to find the technology that works best for you. 2) The reliability of Lexus is a major factor in the decision to purchase or lease, and the appointments that come with the automobile are certainly a nice touch. 3) Additionally, the outstanding service provided by Lexus, including loaner cars, is a definite plus.

I have owned three Lexus vehicles in the past and have never encountered any issues. However, my new 2021 Lexus RX350 AWD purchased in June has been experiencing hesitation during acceleration, which has almost led to several crashes. If this issue persists, I may have to consider trading it in for a different vehicle. I am disappointed with the current performance of my Lexus.

If you are someone who is sensitive to noise, vibration, or buzzing, then it may be best to consider other options. I recommend taking an extended test drive of this Lexus to experience these factors firsthand before making a purchase decision. Personally, I am disappointed and frustrated that I did not do so, as I had trusted in the quality of Lexus. Unfortunately, the service department has been unable to address this issue and is denying its existence. The constant noise and vibration have been a daily challenge for me.

Firstly, I want to make it clear that I have nothing against the Lexus brand. They make great cars and my family loves their vehicles. However, I have been hesitant to write anything negative about Lexus due to a past experience. Here's what happened: I replaced my two-year-old BMW 3 Series with a 2013 Lexus RX350. I loved the vehicle and still do, but I started hearing a very hard-to-notice noise (unless you're sitting in the driver's seat) coming from the left driver's side seat belt column. On long and short trips, even a tiny bump or gust of wind would make the noise more constant and annoying. Long story short, I have taken the vehicle to Lexus service three times as of June 1st.

I drove a Lexus RX 350 for 17 years and one NX. Although it is a great quality SUV with a quiet ride, I must say that the Navigation System is the worst on the market. It was so bad that I had to carry a Garmin to put on the Dash in case it couldn’t find where I wanted to go, which was most of the time. I switched to a Jaguar F Pace for the Touchscreen and now I am looking at a BMW x5 for the Nav System. Even though it is a touchscreen, you can’t use it once you start driving. However, I believe that the passenger should have access to it at least so that you can change your destination or look for something. Even at a standstill, you can't search for anything outside of 5 miles (8 km). When I asked the salesperson to find me a certain golf course, he couldn’t do it unless he typed in the whole address, but it gave him all the courses within 5 miles. How useless is that? Sure, you might use Apple CarPlay if you have data, but some of us retirees don’t need data anymore. Plus, if you use it on the fly, it’s illegal in many states and provinces in North America. Lexus dealers say it's a safety thing, but they are the only ones doing it. If you use Apple or Android CarPlay on the fly, then you are breaking the law and safety concerns as well. So, where is the safety? Lexus, if you can’t do it right, then don’t do it. I suggest having a look at Mercedes' new MBUX or BMW Nav’s. You are years behind everyone else. Sorry, but I still can’t come back to you. I have a 2020 Mercedes GLE on order now.

Hi there! I hope you're doing well. I wanted to share my experience with this car that I bought used with 25K on the odometer. It was actually a dealer loaner, but I couldn't be happier with it! I've put 50K more miles on it since then and it's only been back to the dealer once, and that was just to put in an aftermarket battery in the key fob. The car has been flawless and has only needed maintenance like oil changes every 5K and brakes at 70K. It's amazing to think that the car will be 8 years old in June and it's still running like new! The leather seats are showing some wear and tear, but that's to be expected with age. The tires don't last as long as I'd like, but that's a minor issue. It's not the best in the snow, but it's still a great car. It's sneaky fast and very quiet, and it rides as solid as the first day I bought it. Overall, I think this car is amazing and it's definitely not past half of its expected life!

I've only had the car for a week, but I'm already impressed with the RX. It's a significant upgrade from my 2018 Volvo XC60, with a smoother, quieter, and more comfortable ride. The little features that come with the RX, like the electrically adjustable steering wheel and the memory seating position, really appeal to me. The Mark Levenson sound system is the best I've ever heard in any car, and the trackpad is surprisingly easy to use. The RX is everything I expected it to be - quiet, smooth, and comfortable. Even when I drove over a badly patched section of road, the ride was still like a pillow top mattress thanks to the 20” Michelin tires. My RX came with the luxury package, heads up display, heated and cooled seats, triple beam LED headlights, panoramic moonroof and leather upholstery. It's a well put together package with all the luxury features I wanted, without the high price tag of German cars. As someone who has owned four Lexuses over the years, I always seem to come back to this brand.

We purchased our 2018 RX350 in June of last year, so we've had it for almost four months and have driven it for 3000 miles. While my wife is the primary driver, I drive it about twice a week. I want to emphasize that we both had to like the car, so we test drove the 2019 RDX with SH-AWD and the 2018 Q5 with Quattro. Ultimately, we chose the RX because of its exceptional interior design and quality. This is my second new Lexus, and I have also owned new Acuras, BMWs, and Audis. So far, Lexus has provided us with the best ownership experience, and we are thrilled with the interior of the RX. Although Audi offers better exterior design, their reliability is poor in my experience, and we want to keep this car past its initial warranty, where Audi just falls apart. The RDX had the best drivetrain and handling, but I couldn't get over the interior and center stack. Our RX comes with the premium sound, premium interior (I forgot the name of the packages), but it does have the wood accents and nicer leather, as well as the Navigation package. It's a FWD, which is perfect for us living in sunny California. The AWD system of the RX is a snooze compared to Quattro and/or SH-AWD and only activates upon slipping, so it's not much use for us that justified the premium pay.

Merry Christmas! I was pleasantly surprised by my husband with this wonderful vehicle. I've been driving it for a week now and I absolutely love it! The vehicle is beautiful and the drive is smooth. However, I do think that for the price, the sound system and leather seats could be softer. Additionally, it would be great if the rear backing feature, which is standard in the Nissan Murano, was included without having to purchase the standard navigational system. This is our first SUV and our third Lexus vehicle. I wouldn't trade it for anything else though the new Acura MDX did catch my eye! Thank you for reading.

I love coming back to Lexus because of their dependable quality and luxurious interior. It's amazing that your car still drives great even after 87,000 miles!
