Common Lexus Rx350 problems
The Lexus RX 350 is a popular luxury SUV, but like any vehicle, it has its share of common problems. Here are some of the most frequently reported issues based on search results:
- Faulty Camshaft Timing Oil Control Valves: This issue, affecting models produced from 2007 to 2013, results in repeated illumination of the Check Engine Light, traction control, and AWD lights. It is caused by faulty camshaft timing oil control valves, which can lead to engine damage if not addressed.
- AC Issues: Another common problem with the Lexus RX 350 is A/C issues, which can manifest as an error message and A/C vents that fail to blow cold air.
- Dashboard Cracking: The first model year of the Lexus RX 350, 2007, had a plastics issue with the dashboard, causing it to crack. This issue was resolved in subsequent releases but can still be a cosmetic concern.
- Steering Problems: In the early releases of the Lexus RX 350, the rack and pinion sometimes start to fail, which is both a safety concern and a relatively expensive fix.
- Battery Failures: Some Lexus RX 350 owners have reported battery failures, though this is a less expensive problem compared to others.
- Defective Rain Sensors: This issue, affecting the windshield wipers, can cause problems in rainy conditions.
- Illuminated Check Engine Light: This issue can be caused by various problems, including faulty oxygen sensors, catalytic converter failure, or issues with the fuel injection system.
- Transmission Failure: Some Lexus RX 350 owners have reported transmission failure, which can be a costly repair.
- Shift Lag: This issue, affecting the 2008 RX 350, can cause a delay in shifting gears, which can be both inconvenient and potentially dangerous in certain driving situations.
In conclusion, while the Lexus RX 350 is a popular and well-regarded luxury SUV, it is not without its common problems. Owners should be aware of these issues and consider them when purchasing or maintaining their vehicles.

- VIN: 2T2ZZMCA9JC

- Summary: 1. At [XXX] on [XXX], I was pulling into my gym's parking lot, when I stepped on the break to park my car, instead of stopping, the car accelerates rapidly and crashed through the other side of the sidewalk where there were light pole and cement walls, throwing me forward and backward with seat belt on, I was in total shock! 2. My insurance sent a field inspector to the body shop 2X in hope to repair my car but ended up declaring it a Total Loss. 3. Lexus said they would send a field tech to get the EDR (Event Data Recorder) data from my 2018 Lexus RX350 within 30 days, but the results won't be available for 30-45 days after that. Lexus's slow response to this accident concerns and disappoints me b/c it was a serious crash that Lexus should treat it seriously and promptly. 4. The disbelief of a 'young' car with only 12297 miles could have issues like this puzzled me and drove me to do a lot of online research, then I came across this site [XXX] which contains an article titled '10 Common Problems of A Lexus RX350'. Problem #5 described exactly what had happened to me: 'ONE RECURRING PROBLEM THIS CAR HAS IS THAT THE SYSTEM MALFUNCTIONS SEVERELY. THIS TYPICALLY HAPPENES WHEN THE DRIVER IS TRYING TO PARK THE VEHICLE. REPORTS PAINT THE SAME PICTURES REPEATEDLY: THE DRIVER IS PULLING INTO A PARKING LOT, THEY PUSH THE BREAK PEDAL, AND INSTEAD OF STOPPING, THE CAR ACELERATES RAPIDLY, WHICH RESULTS IN A CRASH." Based on this article, it seems that Lexus should have issued a recall, but no! 5. The strange thing was that NO airbags were exploded/activated, yet the vehicle was damaged to beyond repair, it makes me wonder if there was an issue with the airbags too. If this incident had occurred at an intersection, I dare not imagine the outcome...I could have been killed or critically injured along with other innocent people on the road. I am very traumatized by the whole experience and sadly, the feeling seems to have gotten worse as time goes. - Date Of Incident: 2024-10-07
- Date Complaint: 2024-10-08
- VIN: JTJDGKCA9J2
- Components: SERVICE BRAKES
- Summary: I am writing to raise a serious concern regarding a issue with my 2018 Lexus RX450hL involving the brake actuator. Since purchasing the vehicle at 63,000 miles, I have noticed hissing, clicking, and squeaking noises when applying the brakes. As the mileage increased to 83,000, these noises have worsened, becoming unbearable. In addition, I am experiencing a shaky driver-side mirror and a rusting hood latch, both of which present safety concerns. For a vehicle under 5 years old , I believe these problems do not reflect the quality I expected, particularly given the premium price I paid. According to Lexus' Technical Service Bulletin (TSB) #L-SB-0032-23 Rev, issued in October 2023, which addresses squawk or knock noises from the engine compartment when the brake pedal is pressed or released, affecting models like the RX450hL. My vehicle exhibits symptoms similar to those described in the TSB. The vehicle was regularly maintained by the previous owner at Lexus of Thousand Oaks and Woodland Hills. Despite this, the major part like brake actuator has failed prematurely. Given Lexus' reputation as a luxury brand, it is unacceptable that such a critical component would fail before the vehicle is 5 years old or has reached 100,000 miles. The combination of the brake actuator defect, the shaky mirror, and the rusting hood latch is disappointing, especially for a vehicle of this caliber. When I initially contacted Lexus Customer Service, I was also dealing with rusting parts and a failing brake booster. Lexus of Cerritos provided a repair estimate of around $5,000 for brake actuator. I was advised to reach out to Lexus Customer Service after my request for a good faith repair was denied due to the inability to obtain the complete maintenance history. However, I have since confirmed with the previous owner and Lexus that the vehicle was regularly serviced. I am also aware that Lexus has issued brake actuator-related recalls for several models.

- Summary: 2015 Lexus RX450H with less than 60,000 miles Electronic Power Steering Motor needs repair or replacement. The Electronic Steering Motor has an internal 3 piece star-shaped green plastic gear in between two metal pieces used as a bushing/damper. That green plastic gear has become dry, hard, dehydrated, and has crumbled inside the electronic power steering motor. Diagnostic indicators include rattling and vibrations emanating from the steering column that sounds like something is broken inside the steering assembly. Which it apparently is. Moreover, I am particularly concerned about the implications of this denial. The faulty component in the electronic power steering system poses a significant risk, including the potential for complete loss of steering control. This not only jeopardizes my safety but could also lead to further damage to my vehicle or even bodily injury. Given these circumstances, I believe it is imperative that this matter be addressed with urgency.

- Summary: My car has an oil leak from the timing chain cover gasket that was discovered by an independent mechanic at 37,465 miles. The dealer confirmed the leak on June 14, 2024 during a recall replacement of the fuel pump. The repair is very expensive and the car is no longer under warranty. This is the second occurrence of this same issue. The first occurred in April 2021 at 24,192 miles and was repaired by the dealer under warranty. There were no warning lamps or messages of the problem but there was oil on the ground where I park. The car is available for inspection. An internet search confirms that this is a known and common problem with the Lexus RX350 (and specifically the 2017 model) for many owners with some occurring more than once as in my case.

- Summary: I bought this car in March 2020. We took it to the Kingsport, TN Lexus dealer Sept. 14, 2020 for several warranty issues and a recall factory interior front door handle replacement. Today, 9/3/24 the front driver’s side interior door handle broke and the door cannot be opened from inside the car. Called local dealer who said that it was guaranteed for 12 months or 12,000 miles. I find this completely unacceptable. I am [XXX] and have driven cars for over 40 years and I have never had a car handle break. For this handle to basically last four years is unacceptable and unsafe for any Lexus driver. At this point I question as to whether the repair was actually made. If in fact replaced, I am shocked by the lack of quality in a repair that was to have fixed a serious issue. Driving a car when you cannot open the door is not something I recommend to anyone! I have called Lexus National customer service and they have opened a case. I do plan to have this repaired and I do not plan to pay for what I consider to be very low quality part replacement. - VIN: 2T2BGMCAXHC

- Summary: When checking the emergency SOS function in my car I found that it did not work. I called Lexus support and was told that the following safety systems would no longer be operative: Lexus Enform Safety Connect including Automatic Collision Notification; Enhanced Roadside Assistance; Emergency Assistance Button and Stolen Vehicle Locator; Lexus Enform Remote including Remote Engine Start/Stop, Door Lock/Unlock, Vehicle Finder, Guest Driver Monitor, Vehicle Status and Alerts, Key Fob Remote Start, and Integration with Alexa and The Google Assistant; Lexus Enform Destination Assist including 24-hour live response center agent; Lexus Enform Service Connect including Vehicle Health Report, Vehicle Alerts, and Maintenance Alerts; These include safety systems that I rely on, especially when driving on interstate highways, and were included when I purchased my car. I had no warning that the services would cease to function in October of this year. Lexus states that these systems will no longer function because telecommunications providers will no longer support 3G service. This is certainly a safety issue for me and for other drivers and I believe that Lexus should be required to modify the hardware/software in these vehicles to function in a 4G/5G environment. Lexus representatives state that Lexus has no plans to correct these safety issues. I am requesting that NHTSA review this matter as a highway safety issue.
Lexus Rx350 2016
- Date Of Incident: 2024-07-27
- Date Complaint: 2024-09-01
- VIN: 2T2BGMCA9GC
- Components: POWER TRAIN
- Summary: Upon parking after 20-mile drive, severe leak of transmission oil from transmission oil cooler area, no warning messages/lights or fault codes present. No evidence of leak at starting point for drive, was sudden failure internal to transmission cooler with no evidence of impact/vibration damage or corrosion; failure was perhaps at welds of fins to tubing. Leaking oil creates fire and slip hazard, lack of any kind of warning to driver would have allowed continued driving until transmission failed except for luck that this was short trip. Vehicle has never been damaged in a crash, has been carefully inspected and maintained since purchase new. This is not a wear item and should never fail without external damage or corrosion, certainly not at 45,000 miles. Difficult to believe that this anything other than a manufacturing defect on this early production (VIN ending 002034) vehicle. Repaired by Lexus dealer with Lexus covering half of cost as “goodwill” (cost to me at ~$1,050 incl. towing), although dealer attempted to return vehicle without having reinstalled air duct and lower shroud.

- Summary: The hood latch and cable malfunctioned three times in one year. Once in January 2024 (I replaced the latch); once in July 2024 (the dealer recommended to eventually replace the cable, but was able to fix it); and most recently on [XXX] (the dealer identified the cable was faulty and needed to be replaced). The hood would close but not all the way and the hood release had no tension. There was prior warning or symptoms prior to the hood lock failure. All the records for this is with the service department of Pohanka Lexus in Chantilly, VA. I attached the most recent service visit. I took it to the Lexus dealer service center each time. I am getting it fixed this weekend by another service shop (because Lexus charges too much). This was extremely dangerous because if the hood is not secure, it could open at any time while driving and cause an accident, especially at high speeds. There is the potential that if the hood does not lock when closed after it opens, that it could possibly fly open while the car is in motion. - Summary: * Our 2008 Lexus RX 350 dashboard is cracking: areas of safety concern are the cracks around the ignition switch, the air bags, and the instrument panel. * There are cracks all around the ignition switch which places it in jeopardy of malfunctioning to include releasing dangerous fumes and dangerous fragments (scrapnel), and/or falling out. * The air bags are a grave concern as they may not deploy due to the cracks in the dashboard. * The instrument panel has a backup camera that may also be negatively impacted. There was a safety recall on these dashboards, and Lexus claimed that they were waiting on parts and that we would be contacted. We were never contacted by Lexus, and when we contacted them on several occasions, Lexus told us that they were not going to replace the dashboard. The cracks in my dashboard are extremely serious concerns for my family's safety, which is why this vehicle is only used if there's an in an emergency due to the safety concerns. We live in south Georgia, and the dashboard began cracking / melting as a result of heat and humidity. Lexus has refused to honor the agreement that it made in accordance with its "Warranty Enhancement Program." Our last case number with Lexus is [XXX] on [XXX], and we have not heard back from Lexus' vehicle protection. The numbers that we contacted were 800-448-1505 and 800-255-3987. I previously owned two Toyota Highlanders before upgrading to the Lexus RX350 FSPORT. My latest Highlander was an '08 Sport model. I opted for the FSPORT due to its tighter suspension, as the regular RX350 is known to be a little squishy for handling. During my search, I test drove several other SUVs, including the Audi Q7, Porsche Cayenne and Macan, Acura MDX and RDX, BMW X5 and X3, and a Highlander hybrid. While all of them were good SUVs, I found the Lexus to be the best overall package, especially when it comes to reliability. I have already put 5,500 miles on it and have pushed it hard on a very curvy road to my neighborhood, and it handles very well. The seating is comfortable, but as someone who is 6'1Radar cruise can be a bit unpredictable at times, especially when approaching a car stopped at a red light. However, it does automatically trail and stop behind a car in front. When resetting radar cruise to a lower speed, it may slow down the car by braking or downshifting. With a bike rack in a trailer hitch mount behind the car, you may need to disable multiple safety features to back up, but Lexus customer service can assist you with this. The navigation system may take you on back roads to save time, so it's always a good idea to double-check with a map. The A.C. system may struggle to cool the car after it has been sitting in the sun, but it should eventually cool down. The styling is a matter of personal preference, and the panoramic roof does not allow for roof cross bars from Lexus. It's important to read all the footnotes for every option to avoid any surprises. Overall, this car offers great value for its price, with reliable handling, comfortable interior space, and impressive safety features.I purchased my car through Costco's auto buying program from a dealer located 225 miles away. The dealer offered me a price that was $1,700 below the invoice, which was not the MSRP. There were a few additional charges that were added on to get $600 of profit back. Overall, I thought it was a great deal since it gave up all the regular margin and his 2% hold back. The MSRP, including options and delivery, was $61,000.

I researched and test drove virtually every model in this class. Even though I had put a deposit on a 2016 Acura RDX, I ended up leasing the RX350 because of the incentives and Lexus customer service ratings. I'm super pleased with my decision a few months later. The RX350 has a very comfortable and quiet ride, great display on the Nav, good fuel economy (averaging 20 mpg), and room for 2 mountain bikes and a dog in the back with seats folded down. Even my boyfriend, who drives an ML550, is impressed!

The Ford Edge provided a smoother ride than this vehicle, which has a subpar navigation system and overly firm front seats.

I hope you're doing well! I just wanted to share that I've had this car since 2007 and it's been amazing. I haven't had any issues with it and everything has held up beyond my expectations. It's truly been a reliable vehicle.

When I decided to upgrade my 'flawless' 1998 Toyota 4-Runner, the RX 350 was an obvious choice. It's more luxurious, has more class and good looks, and Toyota's solid reputation made the decision easy. Overall, I really like it. The ride, fuel mileage, and luxury are all top-notch. However, the voice-activated Nav System falls short. What really disappoints me is that the 'RX' series doesn't include recognition of any 'Climate Commands', unlike all the other Lexus models. I even called Lexus/USA about this, and they said a 10-second download would fix the problem. But their answer was 'Sorry - No Deal'. It makes me feel like I have less of a Lexus than the other models. Why??

I traded my 2020 Lexus RX 450h for a 2023 RX 350 and I'm disappointed with my decision. The new model has replaced all the convenient controls with difficult-to-find ones. Although Lexus claims a one mpg gain with the 4 cyl over the previous V6, the new engine requires premium gas which costs an additional 60 cents per gallon over regular. This means that the customer ends up losing out.

Although there are some areas that could be improved, such as the engine and wind noise, overall the car has a lot of great features. The heated steering wheel is a nice touch, and the instrumentation, audio, and navigation controls are easy to use once you get the hang of them. While the rear visibility could be better, the car is still a pleasure to drive. Although the tonneau cover can be a bit tricky to remove, it's a small price to pay for the convenience of having a spacious back seat for your furry friend. While it may not be the cheapest option on the market, the car is definitely worth the investment. I highly recommend giving it a try!

Congratulations on your new car! It's great to hear that the V6 engine is more powerful than the previous model. The improved turning circle is also a plus. Although the interior design may not be as nicely appointed as the old one, the stereo is excellent and the ride is very smooth and quiet. It's unfortunate that there is an annoying rattle in the dash, but I'm sure the dealer will be able to help resolve this issue. Thank you for sharing your experience with us!

I recently purchased a 2022 RX350 and it has been an excellent vehicle for me and my wife. However, after test driving the 2023 model, I have some concerns. While driving on the highway, I accidentally bumped the shifter with my arm and it shifted from drive to neutral, which was unexpected and concerning. Additionally, I found it less intuitive to switch between drive and reverse when parking in tight spots. The passenger door opening push button also required multiple attempts to open, unlike the handle on my 2022 model which works great. Lastly, I found the paint on the 2023 model to be less rich than that of my 2022 model. Despite these concerns, the ride quality was similar in both vehicles. Overall, I prefer the look and feel of the dash and controls on my 2022 model over the 2023 model.

I've owned over 30 cars of different makes and models throughout my driving life. With a 20-year career in technology, I consider myself tech-savvy and enjoy exploring new gadgets. However, I must say that the electronics interface of this car is the worst I have ever seen. Although I had read about its poor performance, I was still surprised by how bad it actually is. The lack of preset buttons to change the station and the constant display of the map and other information can be frustrating. Despite this, the car is still great overall.
