Common 2016 Lexus Rx350 problems
The 2016 Lexus RX 350 is known for several common problems, primarily related to transmission, interior, and Bluetooth connectivity.
Transmission issues are one of the most significant problems with the 2016 Lexus RX 350. These issues manifest as noticeable shift delays, which can lead to reduced fuel efficiency and, in some cases, render the vehicle undrivable. Ignoring these problems can exacerbate the situation, leading to more severe consequences.
Interior concerns also plague the 2016 Lexus RX 350. One of the most common issues is unreliable Bluetooth connections, which can be frustrating for drivers who rely on their smartphones for navigation, music, and communication.
Bluetooth connectivity issues are a common complaint on the 2016 Lexus RX, with many owners reporting problems around 1,000 miles. These problems are typically caused by a software glitch in the stereo system, which can be fixed with a software update installed by Lexus dealers for under $50.
Shifting slowly between gears is another issue that affects some 2016 Lexus RX models in the first 5,000 miles. This problem is caused by the transmission adapting to the driver's style, and there are software updates available for the transmission control module that can be installed by dealerships to fix the issue.
An exhaust smell in the cabin has also been reported by some Lexus RX owners at around 30,000 miles. This problem is usually caused by a loose flange on the exhaust, which can be inspected and repaired for around $200, depending on local labor rates.
There are three minor recalls on the 2016 Lexus RX, which is better than other luxury SUVs. The most serious recall covers the brake actuator, which could have a damaged O-ring. Lexus will replace the O-rings on affected models for free. The other recalls cover airbags, which are common on all SUVs.
In summary, the 2016 Lexus RX 350 has several common problems related to transmission, interior, and Bluetooth connectivity. While these issues can be frustrating and require attention, they are generally minor compared to other luxury SUVs from 2016, with average repair costs. Lexus dealers can install software updates to fix many of these problems, and regular annual maintenance costs for the 2016 Lexus RX are similar to other high-end SUVs, according to data from Repair Pal.

- VIN: 2T2BZMCA8GC
- Components: FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM

POWER TRAIN PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2024-07-27
- VIN: 2T2BGMCA9GC
- Components: POWER TRAIN
- Summary: Upon parking after 20-mile drive, severe leak of transmission oil from transmission oil cooler area, no warning messages/lights or fault codes present. No evidence of leak at starting point for drive, was sudden failure internal to transmission cooler with no evidence of impact/vibration damage or corrosion; failure was perhaps at welds of fins to tubing. Leaking oil creates fire and slip hazard, lack of any kind of warning to driver would have allowed continued driving until transmission failed except for luck that this was short trip. Vehicle has never been damaged in a crash, has been carefully inspected and maintained since purchase new. This is not a wear item and should never fail without external damage or corrosion, certainly not at 45,000 miles. Difficult to believe that this anything other than a manufacturing defect on this early production (VIN ending 002034) vehicle. Repaired by Lexus dealer with Lexus covering half of cost as “goodwill” (cost to me at ~$1,050 incl. towing), although dealer attempted to return vehicle without having reinstalled air duct and lower shroud.
STRUCTURE PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2024-08-22
- VIN: 2T2BGMCA0GC
- Components: STRUCTURE
- Summary: The hood latch and cable malfunctioned three times in one year. Once in January 2024 (I replaced the latch); once in July 2024 (the dealer recommended to eventually replace the cable, but was able to fix it); and most recently on [XXX] (the dealer identified the cable was faulty and needed to be replaced). The hood would close but not all the way and the hood release had no tension. There was prior warning or symptoms prior to the hood lock failure. All the records for this is with the service department of Pohanka Lexus in Chantilly, VA. I attached the most recent service visit. I took it to the Lexus dealer service center each time. I am getting it fixed this weekend by another service shop (because Lexus charges too much). This was extremely dangerous because if the hood is not secure, it could open at any time while driving and cause an accident, especially at high speeds. There is the potential that if the hood does not lock when closed after it opens, that it could possibly fly open while the car is in motion. ENGINE PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2024-05-22
- VIN: 2T2BZMCA7GC
- Components: ENGINE
- Summary: Timing chain cover oil leak is a wellknown issue for Lexus/Toyota V6 engine for more than a decade. The company is still reluctant to provide a long term solution. This 2016 Lexus RX350 F Sport was first discovered Timing Cover oil leak at 49166 miles and was resealed on [XXX] 2021. One year later, on [XXX] 2022, valve cover gasket oil leak was found at 57608 miles. Two months later, on [XXX], 2022, Timing Cover oil leak was discovered again at 58821 miles. Then two months later, on [XXX] 2022, oil leak was discovered again at 59864 miles. [All above was repaired by Thompson Lexus in Doylestown, PA under Lexus Powertrain Warranty.] Now, two years and 15000 miles later, the car is currently developing the same oil leak again at 76500 miles. The car is out of warranty, the repair will cost $7000. Toyota/Lexus should provide a longterm sustainable solution for this problem instead of advising repair shop to merely reseal the cover, which will eventually leak again. ENGINE PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2003-10-06
- VIN: 2T2BZMCA3GC
- Components: ENGINE
- Summary: Lexus RX350 has Timing Cover Gasket issue. My car is manufactured in 2016 and had only 59,757 miles on it but late last year the dealership discovered the leak after an oil change. The cost for repair is estimated $6500+ I am an engineer and researched the issue. I noticed that many people reported on Timing Cover Gasket issue in RX350 cars. I even learned that the next design flaw in RX350 is the water pump. I contacted the Lexus company and reported on the issue. They offered me $2000 discount. This means they are aware of the issue. I believe Lexus shall fix this issue since it can turn into a safety hazard. If customers don't notice the leak, or leave engine oil leaks unchecked, the engine could seize up, or even catch on fire. Please make Lexus to recall Lexus RX350 Timing Cover Gasket, (and water pump). Thanks and be safe, [XXX] INFORMATION REDACTED PURSUANT TO THE FREEDOM OF INFORMATION ACT (FOIA), 5 U.S.C. 552(B)(6)
SERVICE BRAKES PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2024-03-12
- VIN: 2T2BZMCA2GC
- Components: SERVICE BRAKES
- Summary: Loss of power brake assist. The Lexus dealer diagnosed a failed vacuum pump. This is common with the 2016/2017 RX 350's. Lexus has admitted a manufacturing problem with the pumps and has a service bulletin (L-SB-0010-18) and a safety recall on the 2017's (JLD J2D). The recall should be extended to the 2016's. There are tons of people posting on the internet about failed vacuum pumps and resultant safety issues.

ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,UNKNOWN OR OTHER PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2023-02-17
- VIN: 2T2BZMCA9GC
- Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,UNKNOWN OR OTHER
- Summary: The vehicle sustained water damage due to Hurricane Ida in September 2021 and was repaired at the dealership. In February 2023, the battery needed replacing for a third time since then and I was told that the front and rear carpeting was soaking wet, again, and it was due to the moonroof rails being clogged. The vehicle is currently at the dealership being assessed and repairs should be borne by the dealer/manufacturer; NOT THE CONSUMER. If this is specific to my vehicle only, then I have a lemon. If it has happened to others, then it should be recalled.
POWER TRAIN PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2016-05-26
- VIN: 2T2BZMCA2GC
- Components: POWER TRAIN
- Summary: Auto transmission frequently jerks and seems to search for a gear when starting from a stop. This problem is noted in other vehicles manufactured by Toyota. Dealerships tell me it is a reported problem but there is no remedy. Problem exists from date of purchase May 2016.
SERVICE BRAKES PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2023-03-07

- VIN: 99999999999
- Components: SERVICE BRAKES
- Summary: 2016 LEXUS RX-360. CONSUMER STATED THAT FAILED TO STOP WHICH RESULTED IN A COLLISION.
ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,STRUCTURE PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2022-08-29
- VIN: 2T2ZZMCA0GC
- Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,STRUCTURE
- Summary: Water may leak from heavy rain, from the sunroof region into a part of the roof, leading to water leaking from the interior microphone above the driver seat. Seems to be a common issue amongst 2016-2017 RX350’s but no recalls. This is a safety issue given that the microphone is where the water leaks to, compromising other electrical systems. In addition, water builds and wets the headliner causing mold/mildew smell, possibly leading to future mold build up which is harmful to health. Lexus in Houston inspected and stated a new sunroof is needed, which is costly, although this is a manufacturer flaw.
POWER TRAIN,ENGINE PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2020-10-20
- VIN: 2T2BZMCA3GC
- Components: POWER TRAIN,ENGINE
- Summary: Around the middle of the month of January of 2022, I discovered that my 2016 Lexus RX350 has massive oil leak from timing chain cover. Thompson Lexus dealership confirmed this oil leak. This leak not just happened, but it has happened long ago at least 6 months prior to the time that I discovered based on old oil dirty debris deposits and paints popped out and rusted caused by prolong oil on the frame. The reason that did not detect the oil leak right away was that I have almost not used the car at all for the past two years due to Covid situation. Second, I have parked my car on my lawn, so that could not see oil drops. Third, I put my trust on Lexus and Toyota products, so I have not inspected for oil leak periodically. This oil leak has soaked many parts of the engine, frame, electrical connections, and possibly other moving parts such pulleys and belts. This can potentially create smoke or fire hazard and belt and pulley slippery which can lead to accidents. At the time of the oil leak, my car was under 54,000 miles and under 6 years, so it was still under powertrain warranty with is 6 years and 70,000 miles. I have contacted Lexus several times regarding this matter. I told them about location of the oil leak and when oil started leaking, my car was still under powertrain warranty but Lexus refused to pay for the timing cover repair. After doing research on RX350 from timing chain cover, I have found out that a lot of Lexus RX350 has developed oil leak from timing chain cover since year 2009 or 2010 model to 2016 year model. Some RX350 developed timing chain cover oil leak from a few thousand miles of first use to 38,000 miles. Lexus was aware of the problem, but completely ignored and failed address the problem and issue a recall.

- Summary: The sunroof exploded while driving at freeway speeds with no apparent reason. Temperature was 75 degrees outside.
TIRES PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2021-09-01
- VIN: 2T2BZMCA9GC
- Components: TIRES
- Summary: I brought my vehicle in for damage sustained due to flooding from hurricane Ida. I was told that part of the damage was to 3 tires. I was later informed that the tires need to be replaced due to wear & tear. This vehicle had 18,969 miles of local driving at the time. I’ve never heard of tires being “worn out” on a vehicle purchased brand new with such low mileage. There has to be some kind of defect!
SERVICE BRAKES PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2021-09-03
- VIN: 2T2ZZMCA8GC

- Summary: “low braking power” message
UNKNOWN OR OTHER PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2021-04-29
- VIN: 2t2zzmca8gc
- Components: UNKNOWN OR OTHER
- Summary: On April 29 while travelling on I185 toward Columbus, GA I heard a loud noise followed by the sound of crumbled glass. When I could find a safe place to pull over, I looked and discovered that my moonroof had shattered. Had the curtain under the moonroof had not been drawn, I would have been hit with the shattered glass, probably resulting in my loss of control over the vehicle at interstate speed, resulting in a serious accident or death. I returned immediately to my dealership, Hennessy Lexus in Duluth, Georgia. They contacted the Lexus regional manager, who denied Lexus' responsibility for the failure. I did, (and needed to) have the moonroof repaired by the dealership. I also contacted Lexus Corporate office by phone, and sent them by email a copy of photos of the broken moonroof and the invoice for the repair. They passed my inquiry down to the regional manager (again) who again denied Lexus responsibility for the failure. The failure occurred in fair weather on a highway with very little traffic, trees or overpasses, and there was no reason to believe that any outside forces caused the failure. I feel that this potentially dangerous failure is a result of poor manufacture or design.
UNKNOWN OR OTHER PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2021-04-06
- VIN: 2T2BZMCA8GC
- Components: UNKNOWN OR OTHER
- Summary: KNOCKING SOUND COMING FROM THE ENGINE AT ~50K MILES. TOOK IT TO A LEXUS SERVICE CENTER AND WAS INFORMED THAT THE SOUND WAS FROM A FAILING BRAKE VACUUM PUMP. IF NOT ADDRESSED, THE FAILING PUMP COULD MAKE BRAKING THE VEHICLE EXTREMELY DIFFICULT AND POTENTIALLY CAUSE AN ACCIDENT. THE 2017 RX350S HAVE A RECALL FOR THIS EXACT ISSUE BUT NOTHING FOR THE 2016 RX350S. DISAPPOINTED THAT A VEHICLE THAT HAS BEEN DILIGENTLY MAINTAINED WITH ONLY ~50K MILES IS ALREADY HAVING ISSUES WITH FAILING PARTS THAT COULD CAUSE A SERIOUS ACCIDENT.
UNKNOWN OR OTHER PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2021-03-20
- VIN: 2T2ZZMCA7GC
- Components: UNKNOWN OR OTHER
- Summary: I WAS DRIVING DOWN HIGHWAY AND HEARD A LOUD EXPLOSION. I WAS VERY SHAKEN UP. IT WAS A SCARY EXPERIENCE. I WAS TRAVELING 220 CROSS LAKE BRIDGE AND AT TIME COULD NOT PULL OVER. I KEPT HEARING CRUNCHING NOISE ABOVE ME. I OPENED SUNROOF INSIDE COVER AND THAT'S WHEN I NOTICED THE SUNROOF WAS SHATTERED AND IT WAS WHAT HAD EXPLODED.

- Summary: RODENT DAMAGE TO THE ELECTRICAL WIRING HARNESS OF MY 2016 LEXUS RX 350 CAUSED BY LEXUS USING A SOY BASE COVERING ON THE WIRES THAT ATTRACT RODENTS. LEXUS TAKES NO RESPONSIBILITY FOR THE REPAIR THAT COST THOUSANDS OF DOLLARS. NOT TO MENTION A SAFETY ISSUE. THIS IS A COMMON PROBLEM BASE ON ALL THE CLASS ACTION LAW SUITS AND SHOULD LED TO A RECALL
VISIBILITY/WIPER PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2020-11-29
- VIN: 2T2BZMCA8GC
- Components: VISIBILITY/WIPER
- Summary: SUNROOF SPONTANEOUSLY SHATTERED
FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2020-09-23
- VIN: 2T2BZMCA7GC
- Components: FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM
- Summary: THE VEHICLE WAS STALLING AND SPUTTERING AFTER DRIVING LESS THAN 0.1 MILE ON A CITY STREET. AFTER CONTACTING THE LEXUS DEALERSHIP REGARDING THE ISSUE, WE HAD THE VEHICLE TOWED INTO THE LEXUS DEALERSHIP. AFTER RUNNING A DIAGNOSTIC CHECK, THEY DETERMINED THE FUEL PUMP NEEDED TO BE REPLACED. THE VEHICLE HAS 51,701 MILES ON IT. THE TOWING CHARGE WAS $101, AND THE REPAIRS WERE $808.96. APPROXIMATELY A MONTH LATER, I SAW THAT TOYOTA AND LEXUS WERE RECALLING VARIOUS MODELS AND YEARS WITH A SIMILAR ISSUE THAT WE EXPERIENCED. ALTHOUGH THE 2016 RX350 IS NOT CURRENTLY INCLUDED, I CONTACTED LEXUS BECAUSE THE COINCIDENCE WAS TOO MUCH TO IGNORE. LEXUS ADVISED THAT OUR VEHICLE IS NOT CURRENTLY INCLUDED IN RECALL NHTSA 20V012000.
VEHICLE SPEED CONTROL PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2020-09-13
- VIN: 2T2BZMCA1GC
- Components: VEHICLE SPEED CONTROL
- Summary: I REPORTED THE SPEEDOMETER ISSUE TO LEXUS CHANTILLY, VA WHEN I DROVE ON HIGHWAY FROM VA TO IN, THE LEXUS SPEEDOMETER SHOWS 83, AND MY WAZE SHOWS 75. ITS 8 MPH DIFFERENCE. I ALSO HAVE NOTICED OF THE MPH DIFFERENCE BETWEEN 6 TO 8 MPH. LEXUS SAID, I REQUIRED TO PAY FOR THE REPAIR, WHEN THIS SPEEDOMETER IS DEFECTED BY LEXUS DESIGN. IT HAS DO NOTHING WITH PERSONAL WEAR, ETC. I DROVE OTHER HONDA PILOT, AND THE SPEEDOMETER SHOWED CORRECTLY AGAINST THE TRAFFIC PATTERN, AND WAZE APP, BUT THE 2016 LEXUS DOESNT SHOW THE CORRECT BASED ON TRAFFIC FLOW, AND WAZE APP. THE TRAVEL FROM LEESBURG, VA TO INDIAOPOLIS, IN SHOULD BE 547, BUT ENDED AT 601 MILES. IM OK IF ITS JUST FEW MILES DIFFERENCES, BUT 50 MILES PER EVERY 500 MILES IS HUGE, 5% ERROR. I THINK ITS BECAUSE OF SPEEDOMETER AND IMPACT ERROR ACTUAL MILES. I WENT TO LEXUS CHANTILLY, VA TO PERFORM RECALL FOR OTHER THING, DOOR HANDLE, BUT THEY SAID, WONT LOOK AT SPEEDOMETER ISSUE, UNLESS I PAY FOR IT. THEN I CALLED LEXUS CORPORATION TO OPEN THE CASE, AND THE LEXUS CASE MANAGER WONT HONOR OR FIX MY ISSUE. THIS IS SERIOUS SAFETY ISSUE, AND SHOULD BE COVERED BY LEXUS DUE TO THEIR DEFECTIVE ISSUE. I HAVE 4 PHOTOS TO ATTACH.. CAN YOU ASSIST ME TO CONTACT LEXUS TO FIX BASED ON PHOTOS. THANK YOU... I CAN BE REACHED VIA [XXX] - [XXX]. It's been a few months since I got it and I've already driven over 2K miles, including some road trips. The ride is extremely quiet and solid on the highway, making me feel very safe. It's also fun to drive with easy handling on roads and parking, good acceleration, and great gas mileage (27-30hwy/26 city). The sound system is great and I love the 12

I recently acquired this SUV after trying out many other makes, and it's the first luxury SUV I've ever owned or leased. I'm impressed by the attention to detail, such as the tilting mirrors, hidden rear wiper, folding door panels, and convenient entry lights. I also appreciate the many options available for the radio, lighting, and sound effects. However, I have noticed some issues with the paint job. Despite having only driven 3,500 miles, I've already noticed several paint pits, mostly on the front but also on the sides and back. I've taken good care of the vehicle, applying a heavy coat of wax and avoiding gravel trucks, so I'm surprised by the quantity of pits. Overall, I'm happy with the SUV and hope to address the paint issue soon.

Don't be deceived by the appearance of this SUV. Unfortunately, the interior is made with low-quality materials, and the dashboard is prone to cracking from heat exposure. Additionally, the buttons used to control the heat setting can melt off due to heat exposure. I was informed that there have been numerous issues with this model, and a recall was issued a year later. Despite this, I am still struggling to get it fixed, and it is now my responsibility. It's truly unbelievable, and I will never purchase a Lexus again.
Mavis Ratke 2024-08-04
The advertised fuel efficiency for the Rx is 20 mpg city and 28 mpg highway. However, I have been experiencing lower fuel efficiency with 13-15 mpg in the city and 21-24 mpg on the highway. I took my car to Lexus for review, and they were also unable to achieve 28 mpg on the highway while driving at 62 mph with cruise control activated. They were able to achieve 20 mpg in the city by gently pressing the gas pedal. Additionally, there is a loud noise coming from the engine area when the AC fan is turned on, and I find the navigation option difficult to use. Personally, I prefer to use my iPhone for navigation.

Hi there! I wanted to share my recent experience with Lexus. I own a 2008 and 2013 RX, and recently had my 2013 serviced. The dealership was kind enough to provide me with a 2016 RX as a loaner. While I appreciate the gesture, I have to say that I was a bit disappointed with some aspects of the car. The black plastic around the wheel wells looked a bit cheap to me, especially for a luxury car. Additionally, I found the front seats to be quite hard and uncomfortable, even after trying to adjust them. The navigation and entertainment systems were also a bit difficult to operate while driving, which was frustrating. However, I will say that the inside of the car looked fantastic! The AC was also very powerful, which was great for the hot Houston weather. Overall, I hope that Lexus takes some of these criticisms into account for the 2017 RX. Thanks for listening!

I was immediately drawn to the new 2016 RX due to its updated design, which no longer resembles a typical soccer mom car. The Mark Harmon Sound system is truly impressive. However, I did notice some engine noise and vibration, which is not typical of a Lexus. I wonder if anyone test drove it before it went into production? My dealer made a big mistake by giving me an Audi Q-5 as a loaner. Although it doesn't have the same luxurious interior as my Lexus RX, the engine and transmission are much smoother and quieter. If you don't mind the engine noise and vibration, then the RX might be the car for you.

It seems like some of CA Curmudgeon's comments are referring to an older model of the RX350. I agree that the voice command feature and optional winter floor mats could use some improvement. If Lexus can't offer functional floor mats, it might be better not to offer them at all. However, my main concern is with the navigation system, which is overpriced and often suggests inefficient routes. Despite the map being accurate, the verbal and text directions are frequently incorrect. When I brought this up with the dealer's service department, they suggested purchasing an update, but with no guarantee that it would fix the issue. This made my wife uneasy, so I ended up buying her a Garmin nuvi 2599 with lifetime updates and traffic, which we now use instead of the built-in system. I'm also unsure about the frontal Pre-Collision System, and unfortunately, the dealer was not willing to perform a dynamic test.
