The Lexus ES (Japanese: レクサス・ES, Hepburn: Rekusasu ES) is a series of mid-size executive cars marketed since 1989 by Lexus, the luxury division of Toyota, across multiple generations, each offering V6 engines and a front-engine, front-wheel-drive layout. The first five generations of the ES used the Toyota Camry platform, while the latter generations are more closely related to both the Camry and the Avalon. Manual transmissions were offered until 1993, a lower-displacement inline-four engine became an option in Asian markets in 2010, and a gasoline-electric hybrid version was introduced in 2012. The ES was Lexus's only front-wheel drive vehicle until 1998, when the related RX was introduced, and the sedan occupied the entry-level luxury car segment of the Lexus lineup in North America and other regions until the debut of the IS in 1999. The ES name stands for "Executive Sedan". However, some Lexus importers use the name, "Elegant Sedan".

Introduced in 1989, the first generation ES 250 was one of two vehicles in Lexus's debut range, along with the LS 400. The second generation ES 300 debuted in 1991, followed by the third generation ES 300 in 1996, and the fourth generation ES 300/330 in 2001. The first- through fourth generation sedans shared body styling elements with Japan-market Toyota sedans, and a domestic market equivalent, the Toyota Windom (Japanese: トヨタ・ウィンダム, Toyota Windamu), was sold until the launch of the fifth generation ES in 2006. The word "Windom" is a combination of "win" and the suffix "dom" expresses a state of perpetual victory. The fifth generation ES used body styling marketed by Lexus as L-finesse and debuted in early 2006 as a 2007 model. The sixth generation ES debuted in the first half of 2012 as a 2013 model, and features increased cabin dimensions due to a longer wheelbase which is shared with the full-size XX40 series Avalon.

Lexus has positioned the ES in the comfort luxury segment, with an emphasis on interior amenities, quietness, and ride quality, in contrast with more firm-riding sport sedans. Buyers seeking more performance-focused models are targeted by the Lexus IS and rival makes, with such models offering a sportier drive with differently tuned suspensions. In Europe, Japan and other markets where it was not available until the seventh generation model, the GS sport sedans occupy the mid-size category in the Lexus lineup until it was cancelled August 2020. In the United States, the ES has been the best-selling Lexus sedan for over fifteen years.

  • Date Of Incident: 2024-07-19
  • Date Complaint: 2024-08-10
  • VIN: JTHBK1EG0B2
  • Components: FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM
  • Summary: I started my vehicle and drove about 1/2 mile when the car started acting like it was running out of gas. I pulled over and got about 1gallon of gas in a gas can and put it in the vehicle. I turned the car back on and drove about 2 blocks when the vehicle started jumping like it was going to run out of gas again. The vehicle then shut down while I was driving it. I made it to the side of the road and put the vehicle in park and turned off the ignition with the push start button. I tried to start the vehicle again with the push start button and the vehicle would just try to start but just crank and not turn on. This ended up being a fault fuel pump. After some research I was able to find out Lexus had several thousand vehicles of the same year make and model recalled due to a faulty fuel pump that goes out while driving causing a dangerous driving condition which is exactly what occurred in my vehicle. I contacted Lexus and was told my vehicle was not included in the recall which I don’t understand due to the fact that my fuel pump went out while was driving. I am requesting this issue be investigated and the vehicle be added to the list of recalled vehicles with faulty fuel pumps

The light fixtures also is an issue I'm not sure if they're supposed to go down no matter how many lights and replacements you do they still become dim which is dangerous at night while driving in the woods or on dark paths 4 the fuel system they tell to use premium gas which is 91 but then the dealers take to use 87 which causes a stalling on the I believe transmission which is also another faulty issue cuz no matter how many times you replace everything is still very faulty I ran into a lot of people and Friends who have the same issue and again I'm a person who take care of my car and 5 last but not least all the windows and sunroof keep opening which I didn't know was that supposed to be a feature.

  • Date Of Incident: 2019-07-05
  • Date Complaint: 2024-07-05
  • VIN: JTHBJ46G682
  • Components: UNKNOWN OR OTHER
  • Summary: The dashboard of the vehicle has deteriorated causing an extreme shiny surface all over. This can be seen at even given time of inspection. A recall was released to do this issue but when the LEXUS Newport News, VA dealership was contacted, the response was this vehicle was not included. During this time the vehicle was already in the need of the dashbpard being replaced due to the reasons stated in the recall letter. The vehicle was later taken to the same dealership whom denied the recall action, for a different service. The representative that was spoken with for the recall was present and seen the condition of the dashboad. the representative then stated that there was a recall for this issue. I reminded them of the call and the rep replied, if we would have known it was this bad, then we would have added your vehicle to the list for repair. I was told since the original recall date had expired for that repair issue that they were not going to honor the repair, even after acknowledging the damage and agreeing that it should have been included. The representative proceeded to suggest me to pay them as the dealer for a dashboard replacement. I asked to speak with another asociate which in turn advised the same information. The suggested service and charge, was declined. This dashboard has caused a mirror like glare in the windshield. It obtructs the view of objects while driving. Eye apparrel has been applied along with, seat position adjustments, and a towel placed to cover the dashboard while operating the vehicle. This is unsafe and as time goes on this issue continues to get worse. I have not had an auto insurance representative inspect the issue. I was unaware that this maybe an option.

  • VIN: JTHBK1EG7A2
  • Components: UNKNOWN OR OTHER,VISIBILITY/WIPER
  • Summary: I have been driving with a shiny sticky dashboard that reflects light directly into my eyes when I'm driving creating a dangerous driving condition. I was just made aware that there was a Lexus Customer Support Program ZLZ to replace this defective dashboard but I never received a recall notice. I have asked Lexus corporate and the dealership to help me resolve this dangerous defect but they said the program has expired and is no longer willing to help. I am a senior citizen and cannot afford to pay for this out of pocket or buy a new car. This defect is a widely known issue and Lexus has acknowledged that this is causing a dangerous condition while driving. I cannot understand why they would not resolve this matter regardless the program expired or not especially if owners did not received the notice. Please help. Lexus is unwilling to resolve this matter even though they know this defect is causing dangerous driving conditions which may lead to accidents.

  • VIN: JTHBJ46G082
  • Components: TIRES
  • Summary: I purchased and had installed 4 - Nokian Tyres One 215/55/17 on [XXX]. I brought my car to my Lexus dealer on [XXX] for routine car maintenance. When inspected, all four tires had a circumferential crack on the interior side wall. They were deep and went virtually around the entire tire. I was told not to drive the car and replace the tires immediately. At that point, we had put 30,000 miles on the tires and there was still plenty of tread. We returned to our tire dealer, and when he contacted Nokian, they said that this had been a problem with this group of tires, and although there wasn't a recall, they were replacing the tires for free on an "as-needed" basis. Our dealer replaced the tires, although I must say I am leery of this brand. In any event, there should be a formal recall on these tires. The 2020 ES 350 that I purchased had some issues with the front brakes and safety system, which were promptly addressed by the dealership. However, I did experience some shaking at high speeds when turning. While the car looks great, I believe that the Audi A6 outperforms it in terms of both performance and reliability. As a proud owner of four Audi A6s, I can confidently say that they are a better choice. Thank you for considering my experience.

I was really looking forward to getting this car, but unfortunately, it didn't meet my expectations. While the ride was luxurious and comfortable, and the car handled well on the road, I found the front interior to be clumsy and lacking in storage space. Additionally, the cumbersome knob used for navigation and the small recessed screen felt outdated and detracted from the overall experience. Ultimately, I decided to return the car. Instead, I invested in a brand new 2021 Hyundai Sonata limited edition, which was more expensive but much more satisfying, with all the latest technology.

My wife recently upgraded from an Infiniti G20 to a Lexus ES 350, which has added a lot of new features and is definitely an upgrade in most dimensions. However, the G20 felt like a well-designed car that did everything exactly as you wanted it to, whereas the ES 350 feels like a list of features that are not well integrated. The navigation is still on summer time, even though the rest of the car has moved to daylight saving time, and the voice command is not very user-friendly. Additionally, the radio is designed to make listening to plain old FM stations as inconvenient as possible, which can be frustrating. However, the car does have some great features, such as radar cruise control that works perfectly on long stretches of straight highway. Overall, while there are some issues with the ES 350, it is still a great car with many impressive features. When driving in the mountains and encountering a sharp turn, it can be frustrating when other drivers slow down and the radar loses sight of the car in front, causing it to think the road ahead is clear and allowing the car to accelerate. It would be helpful if the radar could use the signal from the steering wheel to understand when it is not a good time to accelerate. However, it seems that some car manufacturers simply slap on features designed by third parties without integrating them with other systems. While this car's radar is supposed to stop the car in case of a potential frontal collision, government data shows that it is not very efficient in doing so. This seems to be a problem with many cars, but some, like Honda, do much better. Additionally, the radar does not work in heavy rain due to the wipers blocking it. Despite having many features, some of them are not very usable or comfortable. However, the car drives well and strikes a good balance between comfort and drivability, with great traction control. With some investment in usability engineering and ensuring that features work well, rather than just stuffing in as many as possible, this car could be truly great.

There are many great features on the ES 350! However, I noticed that you gave it only 3 stars. I wanted to mention that I experienced a bit of intrusive wind noise that sounded like a rear window was open. This occurred not only at highway speeds, but also at 35 to 40 mph. Additionally, I have the 18in Bridgestone tires that Tire Rack rates at 26th out of 29, which may contribute to poor tire grip. Overall, I hope this information helps and please let me know if you have any questions!

In March 2013, I purchased a new ES350 from Sewell Lexus because I prioritize reliability and typically drive my cars for 8-10 years. Maury Erbay, Sewell's salesman, assured me that I was buying the most reliable car on the road. He even shared a story about how Sewell made things right for another buyer who was unsatisfied with the maintenance history of their Lexus. However, I experienced some issues with the car. On several occasions, the car died after being left at the airport for a few days. Despite Sewell's opinion that nothing was wrong with the car, I had to rely on co-workers to jump-start it. Additionally, I was surprised to learn that the tires needed replacing after only 31,000 miles. After experiencing these issues, I took the car to Sewell and was informed that Lexus had just discovered a problem with the Gateway ECU, which was subsequently replaced. Although I was frustrated with the car's unreliability, Sewell and Lexus were able to address the issue. I have often wondered why there was no recall for this issue. It seems that fixing an issue that causes customers to be stranded is not a priority for Lexus. I find it inconceivable that Sewell prides itself on service, yet they were aware of this problem and did nothing to fix it until I had been stranded again and brought the car to Sewell. Due to the multiple unnecessary drains on my battery, I insisted that the battery be replaced. Sewell initially resisted, but eventually agreed to the replacement after a lengthy argument. At 45,828 miles in April 2016, the car's locking system failed, and the driver's door actuator was replaced under warranty. The warranty expired at 50,000 miles in July 2016. At 50,200 miles in July 2016, the back seat began to squeak loudly when no passengers were riding in the seat. At 50,756 miles in August 2016, the air conditioning failed. Although lights illuminated, no sound from the air conditioner was present, and no air came from the vents. As a courtesy, Sewell picked up the car but found nothing wrong with the air conditioner as it started for them. However, the fan was noisy and needed a new bearing, which was replaced at no charge. At 52,900 miles in November 2016, the car's locking system failed again, and the passenger's door actuator was replaced at my cost ($500 parts and labor). By now, it appears that the other two doors are likely to fail soon as the quality of the actuators in the Lexus ES 350 is poor. At 53,400 miles in December 2016, a dull thumping noise quickly progressed from infrequent to extreme. Although it sounded like a suspension issue, the real issue was the sunroof rattling. This repair was projected to be a 3-4 hour repair job and was not covered under warranty. As is clear from the above, the car has been a maintenance nightmare. The reliability factor that was conveyed to me at the time of purchase has been completely non-existent. Never in my years of car ownership have I been stranded (and stranded multiple times) by any vehicle other than a Lexus. It seems like the maintenance issues are happening more frequently. I can't help but wonder when the last two door actuators will fail, since two already have. When I discovered the problem at 52,900 miles, I sent an email to Sewell's business manager (Cecily McClarin), service manager (Mason Kessner), and general manager (Dudley Haralson) expressing my dissatisfaction with the car's poor reliability. I was hoping to hear from upper-level management at Sewell, based on the Sewell promise Maury made at the time of purchase. Unfortunately, I didn't hear back from anyone. I'm disappointed that no one from Lexus made an effort to retain me as a customer by offering a trade on another Lexus at a discount to win me back. I'm now considering other car brands, as I'm prematurely nearing the end of my Lexus journey due to poor service and reliability. As an unhappy customer, I'm determined to share my experience with others.

I'm glad to hear that you've had experience with both the 17 and 19 ES 350's, but I must say that my ultra lux version surpasses them both. It's incredibly quiet and handles bumps with ease, even with the larger/wider 18

This car provides the best ride I have ever experienced, and that's saying something considering I've been driving for over 50 years. I may be an 'old guy', but I'm not looking for a car with the performance of a hearse. This vehicle is both stylish and elegant, with the perfect 'grip and go' to navigate through freeway traffic with ease. It also provides an incredibly quiet ride. According to my wife, it's like riding around in a musical sound room. Despite being two years old, it is completely free of any squeaks or rattles that usually come with age.

The current ES350 is not your father's car, unfortunately. I have owned five of these cars and this one does not meet my previous expectations. It drives like a Rav4 and the road performance could be better. The ride is not as soft and cushiony as previous cars, so you will feel every bump on back roads and roads that are not perfectly paved. For these reasons, I am disappointed. However, overall it is quiet and has plenty of power, although there is a slight delay. It's important to remember that this is not the inline six as before. My guess is that the IS engineers got ahold of this car instead of the LS engineers and did it their way. I finally gave up on the car's ride and tried the 2017 model, but it drove the same. I then drove a Buick LaCrosse and it drives just like the old ES350 did. I bought it and don't think I will go back to Lexus.

I love my Lexus! It's amazing how long these cars last. My current car, a 2012 ES, is not only beautiful but also quick and quiet. It does everything well and the standard audio system with Bluetooth and navigation are very functional and easy to use. The seating is also great for long hauls. I did a 1,600 mile trip in a week and had no problems. The only thing I miss is the handling of my old GS on twisty country roads. But overall, I'm very happy with my ES and would highly recommend it. Although, I must admit, the new GS is pretty impressive too, but it's quite expensive!

Congratulations on your new Lexus ES 350 F sport with the adaptive suspension! It's great to hear that you're enjoying the comfortable seats, smooth ride, and sleek, sporty look of the car with its 19 inch wheels. It's also impressive to hear that the car still has plenty of torque even in Eco mode. While the mouse pad may take some getting used to, the beautiful information screen makes up for it. If you're in the market for a luxury car that's both sporty and reasonably priced, I highly recommend giving the Lexus ES 350 F sport a test drive.
