The Lexus ES (Japanese: レクサス・ES, Hepburn: Rekusasu ES) is a series of mid-size executive cars marketed since 1989 by Lexus, the luxury division of Toyota, across multiple generations, each offering V6 engines and a front-engine, front-wheel-drive layout. The first five generations of the ES used the Toyota Camry platform, while the latter generations are more closely related to both the Camry and the Avalon. Manual transmissions were offered until 1993, a lower-displacement inline-four engine became an option in Asian markets in 2010, and a gasoline-electric hybrid version was introduced in 2012. The ES was Lexus's only front-wheel drive vehicle until 1998, when the related RX was introduced, and the sedan occupied the entry-level luxury car segment of the Lexus lineup in North America and other regions until the debut of the IS in 1999. The ES name stands for "Executive Sedan". However, some Lexus importers use the name, "Elegant Sedan".

Introduced in 1989, the first generation ES 250 was one of two vehicles in Lexus's debut range, along with the LS 400. The second generation ES 300 debuted in 1991, followed by the third generation ES 300 in 1996, and the fourth generation ES 300/330 in 2001. The first- through fourth generation sedans shared body styling elements with Japan-market Toyota sedans, and a domestic market equivalent, the Toyota Windom (Japanese: トヨタ・ウィンダム, Toyota Windamu), was sold until the launch of the fifth generation ES in 2006. The word "Windom" is a combination of "win" and the suffix "dom" expresses a state of perpetual victory. The fifth generation ES used body styling marketed by Lexus as L-finesse and debuted in early 2006 as a 2007 model. The sixth generation ES debuted in the first half of 2012 as a 2013 model, and features increased cabin dimensions due to a longer wheelbase which is shared with the full-size XX40 series Avalon.

Lexus has positioned the ES in the comfort luxury segment, with an emphasis on interior amenities, quietness, and ride quality, in contrast with more firm-riding sport sedans. Buyers seeking more performance-focused models are targeted by the Lexus IS and rival makes, with such models offering a sportier drive with differently tuned suspensions. In Europe, Japan and other markets where it was not available until the seventh generation model, the GS sport sedans occupy the mid-size category in the Lexus lineup until it was cancelled August 2020. In the United States, the ES has been the best-selling Lexus sedan for over fifteen years.

Common 2020 Lexus Es350 problems

The Lexus ES350 is a popular luxury sedan known for its comfort, reliability, and performance. However, like any vehicle, it can experience certain issues that owners have reported. Here are some of the most common problems with the 2020 Lexus ES350 based on complaints from owners:

  • Starting Problems: Some owners of the 2020 ES350 have reported issues with starting the vehicle. In some cases, the car would only start when the start button was held down for an extended period. This issue was initially suspected to be a low battery problem, but the dealership couldn't find any issues with the battery or electrical system after extensive checks.
  • Intermittent Electrical Issues: Some owners have reported intermittent electrical issues, such as windows and moonroof opening on their own. While this issue can be startling, it is generally not considered a significant safety concern, as the windows and moonroof can still be closed manually. However, it can be an annoyance and may indicate a problem with the vehicle's electrical system.
  • Miscellaneous Engine Problems: Some owners have reported various engine issues, including gasket and seal problems, ticking and knocking sounds, and other signs that something is wrong with the engine internally. These problems can range in severity and may require immediate and costly repairs. However, it's worth noting that these issues are not unique to the 2020 ES350 and can occur in any vehicle.

It's important to note that while these issues have been reported by some owners, they are not necessarily common or widespread. The 2020 Lexus ES350 is still considered a reliable and high-quality vehicle, and these issues should not be taken as indicative of the overall quality of the vehicle. If you're considering purchasing a 2020 ES350, it's always a good idea to have the vehicle inspected by a qualified mechanic before making a purchase, to ensure that it is in good condition and free of any underlying issues.

Negative 2020 Lexus Es350 car reviews

  1. Derick Blanda 2025-01-08

The 2020 ES 350 that I purchased had some issues with the front brakes and safety system, which were promptly addressed by the dealership. However, I did experience some shaking at high speeds when turning. While the car looks great, I believe that the Audi A6 outperforms it in terms of both performance and reliability. As a proud owner of four Audi A6s, I can confidently say that they are a better choice. Thank you for considering my experience.

  2. Casimir Larson 2024-10-12

You are purchasing a Lexus. While the quality may not be up to your expectations, it is important to note that the outside door skin may vibrate when closing the door. This could be due to a missing brace inside the door. I purchased my Lexus with 150 miles on it, and it was supposed to be trucked to me. Unfortunately, I have not received any communication from the dealer or Lexus since the day of purchase, which is disappointing. Overall, the customer care has been extremely poor.

  3. Ray Botsford 2024-01-06

I recently had my 2012 Lexus LS 460 in for repairs and was given a 2020 ES350 as a loaner. While it's not a bad car, I don't think I would purchase a new one as it feels like a more nicely appointed Toyota Camry/Avalon. Compared to my Lexus LS 460, I noticed a few differences: 1) The switches and buttons felt lighter and of lower quality. 2) The doors rattled a bit when closed hard. 3) The driver's seat was flat, narrow, and hard, with a short bottom cushion and disappointing two-way adjustable lumbar support. I wouldn't want to take this car on long trips. 4) The base stereo was atrocious, which is inexcusable in a car of this price range. 5) Backseat space was surprisingly close to my short wheel-base LS. As for the drive, apart from the seats themselves, it was smooth but unremarkable. This car definitely corners better than my LS, and the V6 engine is peppy but coarse, with an unrefined transmission. It's quiet and the suspension is well-dampened until you hit an expansion joint or something similar with the eco run-flats. The steering is tighter than in my LS but not particularly linear. I found the front wheels jerking a bit more than I expected when turning moderately hard. However, I do like the size of the steering wheel (smaller) here better than the LS. Overall, I'm glad I got this as a loaner, but I wouldn't consider buying a used one without the Ultra Luxury package and the Mark Levinson stereo upgrades.

Positive 2020 Lexus Es350 car reviews

  1. Ariel Harris 2025-01-05

Congratulations on your new Lexus ES 350 F sport with the adaptive suspension! It's great to hear that you're enjoying the comfortable seats, smooth ride, and sleek, sporty look of the car with its 19 inch wheels. It's also impressive to hear that the car still has plenty of torque even in Eco mode. While the mouse pad may take some getting used to, the beautiful information screen makes up for it. If you're in the market for a luxury car that's both sporty and reasonably priced, I highly recommend giving the Lexus ES 350 F sport a test drive.

  2. Micah Bergnaum 2024-11-27

Hello! Thank you for considering this automobile. It's a great choice for a comfortable and luxurious ride. The front and rear seats are both very comfortable. While the console and glove box are spacious, there is a bit of a lack of space for storing smaller items like phones and sunglasses. The standard stereo, called premium audio, sounds very good, but it may not be up to par with high-end audio systems. However, if you're willing to invest in the MarkLevinson system, I'm sure you'll be more than pleased with the sound quality. After owning the car for a year now, I personally would have chosen the luxury model instead of the sportier F Sport. I've ridden in both, and the regular suspension definitely provides a smoother ride. Thank you again for considering this automobile!

  3. Wilhelm Frami 2024-10-24

I've been lucky enough to own and drive Lexus 350 ES sedans since 1998. Toyota has outpaced all competitors in terms of technology, safety, reliability, luxury, comfort, and price - giving you a lot of value for your dollar. The 2020 model is the best one I've owned yet! What a great feeling!

  4. Alec Welch 2024-10-13

    Great vehicle!

  5. Johnnie Jacobs 2024-07-26

This car drive is very smooth. It handles well with great pick up. The inside interior is beautiful.
