2021 Gmc Sierra 1500 problems
The Chevrolet Silverado is a range of trucks manufactured by General Motors under the Chevrolet brand. Introduced for the 1999 model year, the Silverado is the successor to the long-running Chevrolet C/K model line. Taking its name from the top trim level from the Chevrolet C/K series, the Silverado is offered as a series of full-size pickup trucks, chassis cab trucks, and medium-duty trucks. The fourth generation of the model line was introduced for the 2019 model year.
The Chevrolet Silverado shares mechanical commonality with the identically related GMC Sierra; GMC ended the use of the C/K nomenclature a model generation prior to Chevrolet. In Mexico, high-trim level versions of the Silverado use the Chevrolet Cheyenne name (not to be confused with the 2003 concept). Competing against the Ford F-Series, Ram Pickup, Toyota Tundra, and Nissan Titan, the Silverado is among the best-selling vehicles in the United States, having sold over 12 million trucks since its introduction in 1998 as a 1999 model year.
History
The Silverado nameplate made its debut for the 1975 model year, becoming the top trim level on all Chevrolet C/K trucks, slotted above Custom Deluxe, Scottsdale, and Cheyenne. For the 1968 model year (seven years before the Silverado), GMC C/K trucks used variations of the Sierra name (Sierra, Sierra Classic, Sierra Grande, and High Sierra). Even after the C/K series officially ended, GM still uses the CK and the CC in their current model codes, to denote a two-wheel drive (CC), and four-wheel drive (CK).
For the 1988 GMT400 model architecture, Chevrolet retained the C/K model nomenclature, with GMC branding its full-size line as Sierras. While sharing the same body and chassis, the model chronology of the Silverado and Sierra are different, with five generations of the Sierra, while four of the Silverado.
In 2018, at the NTEA Work Truck Show in Indianapolis, Indiana, Chevrolet unveiled the first medium-duty Silverado, expanding the model line to a 4500HD, 5500HD, and 6500HD chassis cab. Largely the successor to the 2003–2009 GMT560 chassis, the medium-duty trucks are exclusive to Chevrolet, with no plans for an equivalent GMC version. Instead, Navistar International (now partnering with GM) would sell the medium-duty trucks as a rebadged counterpart, called the CV. This is in fact a very similar nod to how the Avalanche did not have a GMC Yukon–based equivalent, but instead, Cadillac would take its place as the former's rebadged counterpart, the Escalade EXT.

Common 2021 Gmc Sierra 1500 problems
The 2021 GMC Sierra 1500 has been reported to have several common problems by its owners. One of the most widespread issues is creaking noises from the steering system, which is often caused by problems with the main steering gear box. This issue has been reported to occur within the first 5,000 miles of ownership, and some owners have had the steering assembly replaced under warranty, while others have had it fixed by having the steering system realigned.
Another problem that has been reported is a frozen stereo system, which has been found on some Sierra 1500 models in the first 1,500 miles. This issue can be resolved by installing software updates, which are available for the stereo system and can improve its reliability. Most dealerships will install these updates for free, while some charge around $50 to install the latest software.
Lifter failures in the engine are a rare, but serious issue found on some 2021 GMC Sierra 1500 series models at around 4,500 miles. The problems were only reported on the 5.3L V8. The only solution is to replace the damaged lifters, which is usually covered by the warranty. If the truck is out of warranty, new lifters can cost over $2,000 to install.
There are four recalls on the 2021 GMC Sierra 1500 series, which is similar to other full-size trucks. The most serious recall covers seat belts which may not be secured properly. GMC will re-install the belts on affected models for free. Other recalls cover tires which may not be properly cured.
In addition to these issues, some owners have reported low gas mileage, coolant loss, and problems with the 8-speed automatic transmission, fuel pump, and body sensor. These issues have been reported to occur at varying mileages and can result in costly repairs.
Overall, the 2021 GMC Sierra 1500 has several common problems that can affect its reliability and performance. While some of these issues can be resolved with software updates or warranty repairs, others can result in costly repairs and may impact the truck's longevity.

- Date Of Incident: 2024-09-28
- VIN: 1GTU9CET2MZ
- Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,UNKNOWN OR OTHER
- Summary: My vehicle was issued an OTA ( over the air update ) automatically, and the update failed, leaving the screen in my vehicle inoperable, with a message displayed stating " Update failed return to dealer" My vehicles radio/information system is now inoperable. The blue-tooth calling capability is also inoperable. This is a safety issue due to the fact that I am a resident of Minnesota and we have a law that states it is illegal to use your phone while driving. In addition, I am unable to receive severe weather alerts via the radio and do not have the ability to make phone calls in my vehicle in the event of an emergency since it is illegal to use my phone in MN while driving. This is a serious safety hazard The GMC dealer (Mills GMC in Baxter, MN ) that the vehicle is currently at has stated this is not a warrantable repair, even though my vehicle is under warranty. I have also contacted GM service directly and was told they would be willing to offer me "rewards points" There is an active recall for the same issue for other GM models of the same year. Recall # N202319250 Essentially, GM is pushing updates to vehicles without the owners consent, giving the owner no choice but to bring the vehicle to the dealership for a repair which they are calling "wear and tear" This is highly unethical and is making customers vehicles unsafe.

ENGINE PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2024-08-13
- VIN: 3GTP9EEL8MG
- Components: ENGINE
- Summary: The engine locked up on the truck due to bad lifters. It has the 6.2L engine and after talking to several mechanic shops and research online this is a very common issue. GM is having to put lots of new engine in under warranty due to this issue. They need to have a recall to fix a known issue that is costing people thousands of dollars to replace the whole engine in the truck. We was driving down the hey today and with no working at all the truck died and and would not crank back over. We had the truck towed to a repair shop to find out that our truck had the same issue that lots of people are having and now it’s gonna cost us several thousand dollars to have fixed when realistically GM should be paying to fix this problem.
ENGINE PROBLEM

- Summary: On the evening of 5/6/24, my husband was driving home in our 2021 GMC Sierra 1500 when the truck started to run hard, shaking, and the check engine light came on and was blinking. He pulled onto the side of the road immediately and more messages were coming across the dashboard. The truck was towed to a dealership that same night. Once the dealership assessed what was wrong, we were advised by the dealership who confirmed the lifters failed. The truck is currently still sitting at the dealership as we're waiting for the parts because we've been told multiple times that the parts are on backorder. I understand the truck is available for inspection as its been sitting on the lot since 5/6/24. This is the first time this has happened to the truck, zero prior issues. The truck has great service records and has always been properly maintained. We are currently still under the manufacturer warranty. To date, the dealership is still in possession of the truck for 90 days, and we still do not have any ETA on when the parts will arrive/truck will be fixed.

- Summary: On [XXX] at approximately 3 pm I left my house and was traveling on [XXX] in Fort Mohave Arizona I was only traveling 7 miles. When I looked at the temperature in the cab was 121 degrees a few moments after the display system went black and never turned back on. I arrived at the store 4 minutes after the display shut off with no warning lights or any type of notification on my phone, I had rolled down the windows to get air in the cab to see if that would help cool down if needed. I was in the store 20 minutes. I returned to the truck turned it on and everything was normal, from there I drove back home nothing happened on my drive back the display was working. At 8 30pm I was traveling on [XXX] Driving towards a casino called Avi. I had the driver's side window halfway down when I smelled a faint plastic burn thinking it was coming from the outside because I had the window halfway down. That is when the cab of the GMC filled up with smoke that came in thru the air vents and flames started to show coming from the defrost vents and under the hood while I was driving. I had to stick my head out of the window to see where I could pull over without starting a huge brush fire. As I pulled over and the truck within seconds fully ignited into flames. Enough time to grab my belongings that I was able to save. My life was at risk by this vehicle igniting while I was driving. INFORMATION REDACTED PURSUANT TO THE FREEDOM OF INFORMATION ACT (FOIA), 5 U.S.C. 552(B)(6)
ELECTRICAL SYSTEM PROBLEM

- Summary: The inner tailgate continually releases the upper tailgate, which then opens when the vehicle is driven. When latched, the tailgate immediately opens again. This is reproducible. I gather the switch is shorted closed, leading to the release of the tailgate. This poses a risk to items in the bed of the truck leaving the vehicle unexpectedly while in motion. The truck has not been to the dealer yet, there has been no inspection of the vehicle by any authority. The vehicle displays a warning “inner tailgate open.”

The manufacturer was not made aware of the failure. The vehicle was not repaired. The failure mileage was approximately 46,000.
LANE DEPARTURE,BACK OVER PREVENTION,FORWARD COLLISION AVOIDANCE PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2024-05-30
- VIN: 1GTU9DED9MZ
- Components: LANE DEPARTURE,BACK OVER PREVENTION,FORWARD COLLISION AVOIDANCE
- Summary: I am writing to complain about that General Motors has issued a retrofit program for 2022 model vehicles that did not come with safety features due to the microchip shortage. I purchased my vehicle new in 2021 and the vehicle did not have the option of having safety features at the time of purchase. I find not having the safety features in a large vehicle to be a safety concern for those that use the vehicle or around the vehicle. General Motors should add the 2021 model vehicles that also did not have the ability to have those features on them added as a part of their retrofit program.
VISIBILITY/WIPER PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2024-05-25
- VIN: 1GTU9DED9MZ

- VIN: 1GTP8DEDXMZ
- Components: STEERING
- Summary: I just purchased a used 2021 GMC Sierra after having for a month the SERVICE POWER STEERING came on, I took it in for service and was told the part is on back order. Not to worried if the dealership and GM sold it to me that way. I am going to drive it and hope and pray that nothing bad happens. And if it does i will be getting a Lawyer.
SUSPENSION PROBLEM

The contact related the failure to NHTSA Campaign Number: 21V718000 (Suspension); however, the VIN was not included. The dealer was notified of the failure. The vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired. The manufacturer was not notified of the failure. The failure mileage was 37,470.
ENGINE PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2023-10-30
- VIN: 3GTU9CET1MG
- Components: ENGINE
- Summary: The coolant control valve is faulty and needs to be replaced. GMC and the dealership know about the issue (Bulletin No. PIP5791), but are not fixing it in a timely manner. This is a safety concern as the system will automatically reduce engine power, which is a major concern when towing and/or in mountainous terrain.
ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,ENGINE PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2024-05-04
- VIN: 1GTU9DET3MZ
- Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,ENGINE
- Summary: The component that has failed is the engine coolant flow control valve AC Delco part number 55516369. Unfortunately the part is still installed on the vehicle. It has been taken to a dealer and this is a known issue but no recall has been issued. The check engine comes on sometimes but not always, sometimes the pickup has plenty of power to drive and sometime it will barely pull itself, all in the same trip without shutting the ignition off. The symptoms first started in December of 2023, but were sporadic, now it is nearly everytime the pickup is started. It is extremely dangerous to drive this vehicle when it has a problem. You cannot tell if it will accelerate normally or is you will push the pedal and it does nothing. The part to repair the problem is on backorder and no release date is yet available. We have been waiting for 3 months and still no word on when this will be repaired.

The GMC six cylinder diesel is a smooth, fuel-efficient vehicle that's great for towing. However, with diesel prices currently $1.00 to $1.25 more expensive than regular gasoline, it's definitely taking a toll on my wallet.

The GMC Sierra 1500 is such a pleasure to ride! During my recent 200-mile interstate trip, I was able to get an impressive 22 mpg.

Congratulations on your new truck! It's great to hear that you're enjoying it so much. The style both inside and out is fantastic, and it's wonderful to hear that it rides so well. It's great that you're able to use it for camping trips too! While some people may focus on the lack of a large screen, it's clear that you appreciate the luxurious feel and functionality of the truck. The cooled seats sound like a real bonus, especially in Arizona! Thanks for sharing your positive experience with us.

I purchased my AT4 used with 17,000 miles from CarMax in July 2022 and I have had no problems whatsoever with this truck! It is awesome and fun to drive. I just took it in for its first service of my ownership and it is in perfect condition. Only needed a simple oil change. My kudos to GMC and General Motors.

I'm glad to hear that you love it!

Hey there! I heard that 14k Mike's car is having some transmission issues when it's cold. The dealership suggested letting it warm up before driving. Just wanted to pass that along!

I have a 2021 GMC Sierra 1500 Elevation with the 3.0 Duramax. Unfortunately, I have been experiencing some issues with the relay between the engine and transmission. Every time I try to speed up, it throws a code stating low oil pressure and another about timing. Although I have taken it to get looked at, the issue cannot be found and a full diagnostic would take 3-6 months for a diesel mechanic to get to. However, the warranty is still in effect. I understand that this can be frustrating, but I am hopeful that the issue will be resolved soon. I have spoken to several people with the same truck and they have had similar issues, but not as frequently as myself. I would advise caution when considering the 3.0 Duramax. Thank you for your understanding.

I had an issue with my truck where 63500 number 6 lifters failed on the right bank. Fortunately, I had an extended warranty that covered the $3600.00 bill. Unfortunately, two weeks later, the left bank lifters also failed. I'm hoping that my extended warranty will cover this too. It's frustrating to know that GM has been aware of these issues for a while now. To make matters worse, one week later, the right bank lifter went out again. After waiting a week to get my truck back the first time, it's now back in the shop and has been there for a week already. It seems like GM is not taking responsibility for these issues, and there is only a service bulletin but no recall. I hope they take action soon to prevent this from happening to other truck owners.

I visited several dealerships in search of my desired vehicle. Unfortunately, one of the dealerships did not allow me to test drive the car and insisted that I either take it or leave it. Although the other dealerships were friendly, they did not have the specific car I was looking for. On a different note, the recent chip shortage highlights the importance of producing at least 50% of our items domestically. However, it may not be the best time to purchase a vehicle as discounts are hard to come by.

I replaced all the brakes at 30K and noticed that the inside brake pad was worn 90% all the way around, while the outside pad was only worn 10%. Despite this, GMC considers this to be normal wear and will not cover seized calipers. However, I stand by my decision to purchase the Sierra AT4 and enjoy driving it.
