2015 Toyota Camry hybrid problems

The Toyota Camry (/ˈkæmri/; Japanese: トヨタ・カムリ Toyota Kamuri) is an automobile sold internationally by the Japanese auto manufacturer Toyota since 1982, spanning multiple generations. Originally compact in size (narrow-body), the Camry has grown since the 1990s to fit the mid-size classification (wide-body)—although the two widths co-existed in that decade. Since the release of the wide-bodied versions, Camry has been extolled by Toyota as the firm's second "world car" after the Corolla. As of 2022, the Camry is positioned above the Corolla and below the Avalon or Crown in several markets.

In Japan, Camry was once exclusive to Toyota Corolla Store retail dealerships. Narrow-body cars also spawned a rebadged sibling in Japan, the Toyota Vista (トヨタ・ビスタ)—also introduced in 1982 and sold at Toyota Vista Store locations. Diesel fuel versions have previously retailed at Toyota Diesel Store. The Vista Ardeo was a wagon version of the Vista V50.

Etymology

The name "Camry" derives from the Japanese word kanmuri (ja:冠, かんむり), meaning "crown". This follows Toyota's naming tradition of using the crown name for primary models starting with the Toyota Crown (1955), continuing with the Toyota Corona (1957) and Corolla (1966); the Latin words for "crown" and "small crown", respectively. Maintaining this theme was the Toyota Tiara (1960) named after the "tiara" form of crown. The Atara trim level name used on the Camry in Australia since 2011 means "crown" in Hebrew. The rebadged Camry variant for Japan, the Toyota Scepter (1991)—took its name from "scepter", a royal accessory to a crown.

Common 2015 Toyota Camry hybrid problems

The 2015 Toyota Camry Hybrid is a popular midsize sedan known for its fuel efficiency and safety features. However, like any vehicle, it has its share of common problems based on complaints from owners. Here are some of the issues that have been reported:

  • Accessories and interior problems: Some accessories in the 2015 Toyota Camry Hybrid frequently malfunction, including the lighter socket, speedometer, clock, car seats, and CD player. Owners have also reported device connectivity issues and instances where the Blindspot Monitoring System stops working. A failing battery can lead to problems with the Camry's electric systems, so it is essential to replace the battery if it is failing.
  • Transmission issues: Some owners of the 2015 Toyota Camry Hybrid have reported transmission problems, such as hesitation during acceleration. This delay can last anywhere between 5 to 10 seconds and is more common in models with high mileage or those that have transmission issues. Before replacing the transmission system, it is recommended to have a certified professional check if the onboard computer system is causing the problem.
  • Heating problems: Heating problems are common in the Camry, and as a result, you may have problems heating the seats or controlling the air conditioning (AC). The touchscreen LCD for controlling the infotainment system sometimes malfunctions, making controlling music playback to the audio system tedious.
  • Brake problems: Braking problems are common in cars that have been in use for an extended period due to wear and tear. Individuals who own the 2015 Toyota Camry Hybrid claim that they can feel noticeable vibrations on the steering wheel when slowing down or bringing the sedan to a stop from a speed of over 60mph. These vibrations become intense when bringing the car to a stop from high speeds. This is due to warped brake rotors, which reduce the effectiveness of the car's braking system.
  • Ground clearance: The 2015 Toyota Camry Hybrid's ground clearance is not adjustable, and it can take a toll on the underbody of the car due to exit ramps, speed bumps, potholes, and poorly designed roads. While there are ways to improve the ground clearance of the 2015 Toyota Camry Hybrid, such as using stiffer suspension kits, it is essential to ensure that any modifications do not compromise the car's safety features.

In summary, the 2015 Toyota Camry Hybrid is a reliable and fuel-efficient midsize sedan, but like any vehicle, it has its share of common problems. Owners have reported issues with the car's battery, accessories, transmission, heating system, brakes, and ground clearance. It is essential to address these issues promptly to ensure the car's safety and longevity.

After turning the car off and then back on again these issues clear initially, but will intermittently happen at random durations of time anywhere from an additional 1 to 3 hours of driving. I've been discussing with Toyota Customer Service, who has known issues with the 2015 Toyota Camry under NHTSA Campaign ID: 15V144000, but they are trying to tell me that it only applies to V6 and Hybrid 2015 Camry's. I feel that this is also applicable to my vehicle VIN: [XXX] . I feel Toyota is refusing to acknowledge this critical safety issue affecting more 2015 Toyota Camry vehicles. I've never had an issue like this with 5 other previously owned vehicles. When asked if I could pay for the fix myself they informed me that it is not possible without a recall! My Toyota dealer is refusing to fix the issue and Toyota Customer Service hasn't responded in over 3 weeks to my inquiry. • Components: STEERING
  • Summary: To the esteemed officials of the US Department of Transportation, My name is [XXX] and I am the owner of a 2015 Toyota Camry SE. I recently had my car repaired for a completely separate issue and while I addressed a problem with the steering, my mechanic made me aware of a 2015 recall for the Electrical Power Steering electronic control unit. I was provided with information regarding it. While my VIN number was not listed as an automobile affected by this issue, it is evident that this is what's occurring. My days have been spent on the phone with the manufacturer and was told numerous times that my VIN number was not identified in said recall. As a result, I was told not to drive my car due to it being a safety concern, meaning I could lose overall control of the car, and I am now lacking transportation. Please advise on how to proceed, I would like to get this matter resolved in a reasonable time. Sincerely, [XXX] INFORMATION REDACTED PURSUANT TO THE FREEDOM OF INFORMATION ACT (FOIA), 5 U.S.C. 552(B)(6)

POWER TRAIN,UNKNOWN OR OTHER,ENGINE PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2022-05-01
  • VIN: 4T1BF1FK9FU
  • Components: POWER TRAIN,UNKNOWN OR OTHER,ENGINE
  • Summary: I had no problems with my 2015 Toyota Camry SE that does not even have 90,000 miles on it, and then I started experiencing a shutter when driving between 25 and 50mph. It feels like you are driving over rumble sticks in the roadway, or an abnormal shaking. There is no warning light illuminated on my dashboard ex: engine light. If I take my foot of the accelerator pedal the shutter/shaking would stop or if I pushed on the accelerator to go faster, it will come out of the shutter/shaking also. While I was getting an oil change at the Toyota dealership, I spoke with the Toyota customer service representative about the closed recall (T-SB-0312-17) for this issue on 2012-2014 Toyota Camry's while doing research on this issue and I was told that Toyota has no plans on doing another recall because they have fixed the problem and I would have to have the car fixed myself which could cost upwards of $3,000.00 out of pocket. Why should a customer have to pay hundreds of dollars to have their car diagnosed for a known problem based on internet forums and other Toyota complaints. The engine light is not on, so a code may not even show up. I cannot afford to pay that, and Toyota should stand by their vehicles, stop giving customers the run around and do another recall as this is a big safety issue of faulty parts which can cause a major accident if the car loses power and stalls.

POWER TRAIN PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2023-06-15
  • VIN: 4T1BF1FK8FU
  • Components: POWER TRAIN
  • Summary: The torque converted on the 2015 Camry is failing. This was a known defect on the 2012-2014 models. Toyota offered a recall on those models but not the 2015. Many other owners are also reporting a faulty torque converter on their cars. The is the exact same issue as the previous model year but Toyota is not covering the defect. This poses a major safety risk as acceleration is inconsistent and compromised while driving the vehicle. Eventually this will lead to complete transmission failure while driving the vehicle which again poses a major safety risk.

POWER TRAIN PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2023-01-08
  • VIN: 4T4BF1FK2FR
  • Components: POWER TRAIN
  • Summary: My 2015 Toyota Camry has been experiencing a shudder between the speeds of 30-40 MPH. I am now experiencing it between 50-60 MPR and it's a heavier shudder. I am learning from research that is the torque converter which was covered under warranty for Camrys made in 2012 to 2014 but NOT 2015. My car was purchased in January of 2015 so I consider this made under that recall time frame. My vehicle is starting to get worse and I don't know what will happen when it gets even worse. I have had my vehicle looked at by two mechanics who have told me this is what it is and to call Toyota about it. I am in that process right now. No warning lights have come on for this issue. This is very concerning and I am super disappointed so far seeing that Toyota has not warrantied the 2015 model year. I love my Camry minus this HUGE problem.

Negative 2015 Toyota Camry hybrid car reviews

  1. Jeff Dooley 2024-07-22

I have owned four Toyota Camrys, two of which were XLE hybrids. The 2014 model has shown significant improvement in terms of reduced vibration when at rest, quicker acceleration, and better handling. However, there are some areas where Toyota has made the car less desirable, such as the insufficient padding on the driver's seat, which is uncomfortable and rock hard in the middle. Additionally, the side pockets on the doors can no longer accommodate my umbrella, and the glove compartment on the passenger side is prone to everything falling out. The center glove compartment no longer has the basket that held my pen. Despite these issues, the Toyota Camry XLE hybrid remains a reliable and efficient car.

  2. Brandon Ward 2024-05-04

I experienced a sudden drop in mpg from 40s to low 30s. Despite taking it to two different dealers, who found nothing wrong, I remain confident that there is an issue with my vehicle. As these hybrids require specialized knowledge, I will seek out a qualified mechanic to address the problem. While I am disappointed with my current situation, I am encouraged by the advancements in cold weather batteries in newer Toyota hybrids. I am confident that Toyota values its customers and will continue to improve their products.

  3. Akeem Spinka 2024-04-24

My wife and I have been experiencing a lower MPG than the advertised 38hwy/43city in our Toyota hybrid. Despite our efforts to drive slower, we only get a range of 28 to 34.5 MPG. Although the computer indicates that we are achieving the proper MPG, the amount of fuel we fill up with at the pump proves otherwise. We are disappointed that we spent extra money on the hybrid model and feel misled. Unfortunately, Toyota corporate has not been helpful in resolving this issue. We hope that they will improve their customer service in the future. If you are considering purchasing this car, be aware that the MPG rating may not be accurate. We have decided to switch to a Tesla and will not be purchasing another Toyota in the future.

  4. Harry Labadie 2024-04-04

This is a great vehicle! However, some Toyota cars have a common issue with smelly vents. I recommend turning off the recycle air and cleaning the vents with a few products to get rid of the smell. Don't worry, it's an easy fix!

Positive 2015 Toyota Camry hybrid car reviews

  1. Hunter McClure 2024-11-09

I did a lot of research on different car models, including the new Fusion, Sonata/Optima, new Accord, and Toyota's own Lexus/Avalon. While I would have preferred a cooler and sportier Fusion, the slow and unproven hybrid system turned me off. The Sonata/Optima models lacked in mileage, reliability, build quality, and more, which was disappointing since my last car was a 2011 Sonata SE. The Avalon/Lexus charged too much for the exact same engine, and although they had better styling, more standard features, and a roomier interior, the Camry was already plenty big enough. This left only the new Accord, which has quite a few new features never before tried on a hybrid, and although it had a price tag about 5K more, it was worth it. If I had more to spend, I probably would have gone this route...

  2. Aurelio Baumbach 2024-11-02

This is a dependable and classy car with plenty of storage and space! My kids and I love this car!

  3. Ward Jones 2024-10-13

Fuel economy, excellent battery life, safety, comfort space, and a quiet ride are all important features to consider when choosing a vehicle.

  4. Reynold Jakubowski 2024-09-04

I highly recommend this vehicle! The hybrid has already gone through a week of being everywhere around town, even back and forth to clients 30 miles away from home, and only used a half tank of gas. I love the comfort and the leather and suede seats, which are not in the newer models. Additionally, my kids feel the air from dual climate, which is only in the EXL model. I am so happy with this purchase! I purchased it from Mercedes Benz Ft Myers, and Kris Wasakowski, the wonderful sales person, was so helpful and gracious. The purchase date was in February 2019.

  5. Hipolito Bartoletti 2024-08-20

Still love this car...continue to get great mileage, trouble free, low maintenance. Toyota certainly knows how to build cars!
