Common 2004 Scion Xa problems

The Scion xA, a compact hatchback introduced in 2004, has been known to have several common problems that owners have reported. Here are some of the most frequently mentioned issues:

  • Charcoal Canister Failure: The charcoal canister, which is part of the evaporative emission control system, has been identified as a common problem in the Scion xA. Moisture can get into the evaporative system, causing the charcoal canister to crack, especially during rainy or very cold weather. This issue triggers the check engine light and requires the replacement of the charcoal canister, filter, filler pipe cover, and the filler pipe cover holder.
  • Rough Idling: Some owners have reported rough idling in their Scion xA, which can be attributed to the I4 engine's inherent characteristics. This issue can be more noticeable in certain driving conditions, such as cold weather or when the engine is first started.
  • Radio Channel Changes: A few owners have mentioned that their car's radio channel changes unexpectedly when they hit a pothole or encounter a rough road surface. This issue is likely due to a loose connection or a problem with the radio's antenna.
  • Shifting Issues: Some Scion xA owners have reported difficulty with shifting, particularly in cold weather. This issue can be more pronounced when the car is first started, and it may improve as the engine warms up. However, it can be an inconvenience, especially during short trips or in colder climates.
  • Weatherstripping Issues: A broken or damaged piece of weatherstripping on the bottom of the driver's side window is another common problem in the Scion xA. This issue can lead to water leaks and potential electrical problems if the car's wiring is affected. It is recommended to have this issue addressed promptly to prevent further damage.

These common problems with the Scion xA are based on complaints from owners and should be taken into consideration when purchasing or maintaining this vehicle. It is essential to address these issues promptly to prevent further damage and ensure the vehicle's longevity.

BEFORE WE WENT MUCH DISTANCE, THE ENGINE STALLED AND WOULD NOT RE-START. WE CALLED THE DEALER, WHO WE ASKED TO SEND A WRECKER. THIS WAS DONE, AND THE CAR WAS TAKEN TO THE DEALER. UNKNOWN OR OTHER PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2005-04-18
  • VIN: JTDKB20U740
  • Components: UNKNOWN OR OTHER
  • Summary: MY CAR IS A 2004 PRIUS PURCHASED AUGUST 2004. ON APRIL 18, I HAD BEEN DRIVING FOR ABOUT 15 MINUTES, THEN STOPPED AT A STOP SIGN. UPON RESUMING DRIVING, A WARNING LIGHT (TRIANGLE/EXCLAMATION MARK) AND THE HYBRID SYSTEM WARNING LIGHT (EXCLAMATION MARK OVER A CAR) CAME ON. THERE WAS NO WARNING SOUND. INITIALLY, THE CAR STILL RAN, SO I CONTINUED AT LOW SPEED (<30MPH) AND HAD MY PASSENGER LOOK UP WHAT TO DO. AS I CONTINUED, I REALIZED THE POWER WAS LESSENING, SO AFTER ABOUT A MILE, I PULLED OFF THE ROAD AND PARKED. AT THAT POINT, I COULD NOT GET THE CAR TO TURN OFF, OR TO DO MUCH OF ANYTHING. THE MANUAL SAID NOT TO DRIVE THE CAR IF THE HYBRID SYSTEM WARNING LIGHT COMES ON, SO I CALLED FOR A TOW. WHEN THE TOW DRIVER GOT THERE, WE REALIZED WE WOULD HAVE TO TURN OFF THE CAR TO GET IT ONTO THE FLATBED TOW TRUCK, SO THE DRIVER KEPT PUSHING BUTTONS UNTIL THE CAR FINALLY TURNED OFF. THEN, WHEN WE TURNED IT ON AGAIN TO PUT IT IN NEUTRAL, IT SEEMED TO BEHAVE NORMALLY. NONETHELESS, I HAD IT TOWED TO THE DEALERSHIP (WORLD TOYOTA, ATLANTA, GA) WHERE THEY KEPT THE CAR FOR 2 DAYS, BUT COULD NOT FIND ANYTHING WRONG, AND DID NO REPAIR. SUBSEQUENTLY, I FOUND A "TOD" SERVICE BULLETIN (HTTP://WWW.ALLDATA.COM/TSB/TOYOTA/1100764800000_1103011200000_EG047R-04/1.HTML ) AND BROUGHT THAT TO THEIR ATTENTION, BUT THEY DID NOT SEEM TO THINK THAT IT FIT MY CIRCUMSTANCE, AND AGAIN DID NO REPAIR.

ENGINE AND ENGINE COOLING PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2003-12-11
  • VIN: JTDKB20U140
  • Components: ENGINE AND ENGINE COOLING
  • Summary: OUR 2004 PRIUS ON FOUR SEPARATE OCCASIONS HAD A COMPLETE ENGINE SHUTDOWN WITH LOTS OF INDICATOR LIGHTS LIT ON THE DASHBOARD. THIS HAPPENED TWICE WHILE WE WERE TRAVELING ON INTERSTATE HIGHWAYS IN TRAFFIC AT HIGHWAY SPEEDS, ONCE IN A TOYOTA DEALERSHIP WHILE THE VEHICLE WAS BEING SERVICED, AND ONCE AS WE PULLED INTO A TOYOTO DEALERSHIP FOR SERVICE. WE WERE NOT AWARE WE COULD SEND A COMPLAINT TO NHTSA UNTIL WE SAY TODAY'S MSNBC ARTICLE. THE FIRST ENGINE SHUTDOWN OCCURRED IN THE HYANNIS TOYOTA DEALERSHIP IN MASSACHUSETTS. THEY TOOK QUITE A WHILE TO FIX THE VEHICLE AND MADE SEVERAL PHONE CALLS TO TOYOTA ENGINEERS FOR HELP. THEY WROTE ON OUR RECEIPT: "NEEDS TRANS REPLACEMENT FOR PERMANENT REPAIR." AFTER WE LEFT MASSACHUSETTS WE DROVE ACROSS COUNTRY TOWARD OUR HOME IN CALIFORNIA. THE OTHER THREE ENGINE SHUTDOWNS HAPPENED DURING THIS TRIP. WE HAD TO BE TOWED (AT TOYOTA'S EXPENSE) TWICE AS A RESULT OF THE INTERSTATE ENGINE SHUTDOWNS AND ENDED UP AT A TOYOTA DEALERSHIP IN JACKSON, MISSISSIPPI. WE HAD TO STAY SEVERAL DAYS AT OUR OWN EXPENSE WHILE THEY REPAIRED THE VEHICLE, AGAIN CONSULTING SEVERAL TIMES WITH TOYOTA ENGINEERS DURING THE REPAIR. AFTER WE REACHED CALIFORNIA WE TOOK THE VEHICLE TO SOUTH BAY TOYOTA AND REQUESTED THE "PERMANENT" REPAIR DESCRIBED ON THE HYANNIS TOYOTA RECEIPT. WE WERE TOLD THEY WOULD DO NOTHING BECAUSE THERE WAS NO INDICATOR SHOWING ANY PROBLEMS AT THAT TIME. WE MADE SEVERAL PHONE CALLS TO TOYOTA BUT WERE UNABLE TO GET THEM TO DO ANYTHING FURTHER TO OUR CAR.

Positive 2004 Scion Xa car reviews

  1. Trenton Halvorson 2024-11-18

While passing by my local Toyota dealer, I was pleasantly surprised to see a Scion in front. Although Scions are not yet being sold in Illinois, I was able to test drive it and found it to be very unique. The car definitely has style and I particularly liked the center-mounted speedometer. The back seat has plenty of space for three of my friends, although taller people may find it a bit cramped. Overall, I think this would make a great first car for someone who values style over speed.

  2. Fidel Hagenes 2024-11-16

What a car! You certainly get a lot of options for your money. It was originally designed for the Gen Y crowd, but Gen G (for geezers like me) will love it too.

  3. Tremaine Beier 2024-11-02

The car has great gas mileage and people love its awesome looks. Overall, it's a great car!

  4. Seamus O'Conner 2024-08-28

The Scion xA is agile, fun, safe, and gets fantastic mileage. You've had yours for almost 2 years and you still love it! It's a great car for someone who wants style but affordability.

  5. Arnold Steuber 2024-08-22

The Scion XA is a fantastic car that is both reliable and fun to drive. It has great fuel economy and is incredibly versatile, making it perfect for transporting passengers or taking dogs and gear to the beach. It's also great for long trips, always providing a comfortable ride. Passersby often take notice of this unique car and ask, 'What kind of car is that?' Despite the high mileage I've put on it, the Scion XA has retained its value remarkably well. Well done, Scion XA (aka MiniCooper on steroids)!
