2017 Land rover Range rover sport problems

The Land Rover Range Rover Sport, generally known as the Range Rover Sport, is a mid-size luxury SUV produced under their Land Rover marque, from the British manufacturer Land Rover, and later Jaguar Land Rover. The first generation (codename: L320) started production in 2005, and was replaced by the second generation Sport (codename: L494) in 2013, replaced by the third generation Sport (codename: L461) in 2022.

Range Stormer concept

The Range Rover Sport was prefigured by the Range Stormer concept car, introduced at the 2004 North American International Auto Show.

This was a low-slung, short wheelbase 3-door coupé that was unusually "sporty" in the context of Land Rover's history. Designed by Richard Woolley, the marque's first complete concept car sported split-folding gullwing doors, one-piece skeletal seats, a "clamshell" bonnet, 22 inch alloys, a 289 km/h (180 mph) top speed, 4WD and a 2,500 kg (5,512 lb) weight. The Range Rover Sport was comparably of much more conservative design featuring five doors and a wheelbase hardly shorter than that of the Range Rover Vogue.

A replica of the Stormer was built by West Coast Customs of Corona, CA for Sheikh Hamdan bin Mohammed Al Maktoum, Crown Prince of Dubai, on the occasion of opening West Coast Customs Dubai; the car is currently registered under the Dubai Traffic And Road Authority.

The Range Stormer is now on display at the Heritage Motor Centre in Gaydon, Warwickshire, UK.

Common 2017 Land rover Range rover sport problems

The Land Rover Range Rover Sport 2017 has been reported to have several common problems based on complaints from owners. Here are some of the issues in detail:

  • Door Lock Problems: Land Rover recalled over 65,000 Range Rover Sport SUVs in 2019 due to door lock problems. These SUVs have a keyless vehicle latching system that may malfunction or refuse to activate. The affected Sport's doors may appear locked even if they aren't, causing the doors to suddenly open while the SUV is moving.
  • Propshaft Problems: The Range Rover Sport's propshaft problems may cause excessive vibrations, which can be felt from its cabin. This is a common issue for all Sport model years, including other Land Rover models, such as the Discovery 3 and 4. The propshaft usually fails because its rubber parts and bearings can easily wear out. Worn-out parts can cause an imbalance, which is frequently accompanied by vibrations and abnormal rumbling noises. Sport owners can prevent this problem by paying extra attention to propshaft care.
  • Air Suspension Faults: The Range Rover Sport's air suspension system is complex and prone to faults. Most air suspension faults have the same symptoms, such as a yellow or red light in the shape of a car with an arrow over the top of it on the dashboard. The vehicle may sit lower, and selecting different height options may be unavailable. The same symptoms and warnings can be caused by issues with the air suspension compressor, height sensors, valves, or reservoir tank. These issues can be diagnosed and repaired by professionals.
  • Front Suspension Arms: The front lower suspension arms are a common issue in the Range Rover Sport. These often go undetected until excess play is found in the lower suspension bushes on an MOT. While replacing the bushing is possible, it is much easier to replace the complete arm that it is part of. Once new arms have been fitted, it is important to perform a 4-wheel alignment to ensure the Range Rover Sport is not pulling to one side, crab walking when turning, or unevenly wearing tyres.
  • Front Wheel Bearing Failure: Due to the weight of the Range Rover Sport and the stresses this causes, bearing failure is common on these vehicles. If you are hearing a grinding or rumbling noise from a corner the front that often gets worse when turning and louder the faster you travel, this often indicates a worn front wheel bearing. To check, jack up the noisy wheel and feel for play by rocking the wheel from top to bottom. If you can feel movement, then the hub and bearing need to be replaced.
  • Brake Discs and Pads: Range Rover Sport vehicles are well known for using up brake discs and pads due to their high power and weight. If low pads are spotted early before any damage is caused to the disc, then just the pads may need to be replaced.

These problems are not uncommon in the Land Rover Range Rover Sport 2017, and potential buyers should be aware of them before making a purchase. Regular maintenance and check-ups can help prevent some of these issues, but others may require professional repair or replacement.

Negative 2017 Land rover Range rover sport car reviews

  1. Geoffrey Watsica 2024-11-05

The car looks great! Just a heads up, you may need to replace the brakes, rotors, and tires more frequently than with other vehicles. The stock tires that come with the car tend to wear out between 30-40,000 miles, and the brake pads (front and back) usually need to be replaced around every 12,000 miles, depending on how much you drive. If you need to have them replaced at the dealership, it can cost between $950-$1500.

  2. Wiley Gleichner 2024-09-29

I ordered a Sport and it was such an enjoyable car, but unfortunately, I had to go to the dealer almost every month to have the DEF fluid system checked. They kept mentioning a software update, but even after the update, the issue persisted. The DEF system was just horrible!

  3. Favian Kuhlman 2024-07-24

Hello! We've had the RRS for around 6 months and driven less than 4800 miles. Unfortunately, it seems like the car is already in need of servicing. According to the dealership, the cost will exceed $800. This is quite a bit below the 16000 miles promised when we originally purchased the car. We're a bit disappointed that the maintenance cost is triple what was advertised. Just a heads up for anyone considering purchasing this car - it may end up being a bit of a money pit. Thanks for reading!

  4. Elton VonRueden 2024-04-16

Firstly, it seems that the voice navigation direction was not included or was not working properly. Unfortunately, the available apps are not very useful and I have had trouble with all of the navigational apps despite spending hours trying to learn them. If I had known that this car did not have a reliable navigation voice assist software, I would have reconsidered my purchase. I would recommend checking that the navigation system works before making a purchase. The manufacturer has promised an update to the software, but so far it has not been released.

This is my first Range Rover and I recently received my 2016 Range Rover Sports SE. Although I did not upgrade the audio system, I was disappointed with the quality of the standard radio. As someone who enjoys listening to music, I found the speakers to be of poor quality. However, I am pleased with the car's driving performance. While the incontrol app system could use some improvement, overall the car is a great choice.

Positive 2017 Land rover Range rover sport car reviews

  1. Pedro Hoeger 2025-07-28

The RRS diesel has been a joy to drive so far. The ride is very comfortable and the seating is also quite comfortable. The diesel engine provides excellent fuel mileage and range, along with good acceleration and torque. While the electronics could use some improvement, the overall experience has been positive. It's disappointing that Land Rover would include such a primitive infotainment system in an $80,000 car. However, the fuel mileage that the diesel provides is still a major plus. The ride, handling, and comfort are all excellent. The cost of service visits is quite high, but that's to be expected with a luxury vehicle. It's possible that the nav/entertainment system has been updated for 2017.

  2. Mortimer Cormier 2025-07-14

I recently received my Autobiography after waiting for five long months. Although the wait was ridiculous, I must say that I am truly impressed with the quality, ride, performance and design of the vehicle. The only minor issues I have are that the rear seats are a bit hard and the front seat caused some discomfort during a six-hour road trip. However, I am hopeful that the seats will break in over time. Additionally, I had to pay $650 for a black Morzine fabric headliner, which I feel should have been included in the price of the car. Despite these minor issues, I absolutely love everything else about this vehicle and it is truly the best vehicle I've ever owned. The Range Rover Sport looks fast standing still and exudes high-end quality that never fails to impress people. I never thought I would love driving another vehicle more than my BMW X5, but the Range Rover Sport has won me over. I was initially concerned about reliability issues, but I purchased the Land Rover extended warranty and feel confident that my experience with this vehicle will be a good one over the next seven years. I highly recommend this car.

  3. Nick Nolan 2025-07-12

What a great ride! I ordered my 2016 RRS and it was delivered in October. I absolutely love this truck. The diesel engine is incredibly efficient, giving me an impressive 26-27 mpg combined. This kind of mileage per gallon is exactly why most SUVs should be diesel. I don't even use the smart on/off technology because I believe that diesel engines should have a minimum of ON/OFF for the engine. To be fully satisfied with this RRS, I recommend getting all possible upgrades. The audio is not great for the money you pay if you don't upgrade to the Meridian system, but this is a small sacrifice that is made up for by the way it drives. Even if you're like me and didn't upgrade to the Meridian System, you'll still be very happy with this SUV. My friends and family love it too, so there will definitely be other RRS purchases in the family :)

  4. Florian Wolff 2025-04-10

The Range Rover Sport is an exceptional vehicle that offers a unique combination of comfort, handling, and off-road capabilities. Its engineering is truly remarkable, as it manages to excel in areas that require very different mechanical elements and design. The luxurious British interior design is also a standout feature, surpassing even the best teutonic designs from Audi. The only downside is fuel consumption, but the diesel variant offers a solution with its impressive 33 MPG on the highway and powerful torque that matches the V8 Supercharged version from 0-40 MPH. For drivers seeking a safe and comfortable ride in any weather or road condition, the Range Rover Sport is the perfect choice. It has proven to be highly reliable, with no incidents even after 52,000 miles. Overall, the Range Rover Sport is a fantastic vehicle that offers a complete driving experience.

  5. Rashawn Kihn 2025-03-09

Stately, elegant, and cushy. The HSE is a trifle underpowered, but a great cruiser. It's ultra comfortable and full of great features, making it a hassle-free ride for three years and 22k miles thus far, with the exception of quickly worn brake pads. I'm looking forward to driving this car for the next 7 years and beyond... Range Rovers always have a timeless, classic quality unlike any other vehicle.
