2004 Chevrolet Ssr problems

chevrolet logo

The Chevrolet SSR (Super Sport Roadster) is a retro-styled retractable hardtop convertible pickup truck manufactured by Chevrolet between 2003 and 2006.

The 2003 and 2004 model years used General Motors' 5.3 L 300 hp Vortec 5300 V8. Performance was 7.7 seconds for 0–60 mph (0–97 km/h) with a 15.9 second 1⁄4 mile (402.3 m) run at 86.4 mph (139.0 km/h). The 2005 SSR used the 390 hp (291 kW) LS2 V8 also found in the C6 Corvette, Trailblazer SS, and Pontiac GTO, and also offered a manual transmission option, the six-speed Tremec, for the first time.

For the 2005 model year, the LS2 engine featured minor modifications that boosted its output to 390 hp (395–400 for 2006), respectively. Performance improved dramatically with the LS2; the 6-speed manual version had an advertised 0–60 mph (97 km/h) time of 5.29 seconds. In addition, GM badges were added to the vehicle.

Common 2004 Chevrolet Ssr problems

The Chevrolet SSR, a unique convertible/hardtop vehicle introduced in 2004, is known for its distinctive design and features. However, like any vehicle, it has its share of problems and issues that potential buyers should be aware of.

One common problem with the SSR is electrical issues. Owners have reported problems with windows leaking and electrical issues related to spark plugs and injectors. These issues can affect the overall functionality and reliability of the vehicle.

Another issue reported by owners is the clutch pedal problem. This problem can make it difficult to shift gears and can affect the overall driving experience.

Additionally, some owners have reported problems with the fuel system and intake leaks. These issues can affect the performance and fuel efficiency of the vehicle and may require costly repairs.

Water leaks are another common problem with the SSR. These leaks can occur in various parts of the vehicle, including the doors and windows, and can affect the comfort and functionality of the vehicle.

Finally, some owners have reported that the SSR has trouble returning above 6000rpm. This problem can affect the performance and power of the vehicle and may require costly repairs.

In summary, the Chevrolet SSR, while a unique and stylish vehicle, has its share of common problems and issues. Potential buyers should be aware of these issues and consider them when making a purchasing decision.

Why did the Chevy SSR fail?

The Chevy SSR was expensive

Because of the expensive price tag, most consumers were not willing to take the risk on an experimental car when they could get better-performing cars with proven track records from competitors at the same price or less.

What is the value of a 2004 SSR?

The value of a used 2004 Chevrolet SSR ranges from $4,698 to $9,270, based on vehicle condition, mileage, and options.

What was the best year for the SSR?

Naturally, the 2005 and 2006 LS2-powered SSR is the most desirable, and factor in an extra 5 grand for the roughly 2,200 SSRs built with a 6-speed.

How many SSR were made in 2004?

Production numbers for the SSR peaked in 2004 with 10,676 SSRs leaving the plant that year. It was the second and last year for the 5.3L Vortec V8 with 300hp.

ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,AIR BAGS PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2019-08-23
  • VIN: 1GCES14P64B
  • Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,AIR BAGS
  • Summary: MY VEHICLE HAS ONLY 11,656 MILES, LESS THAN THAT WHEN I SUBMITTED TO DEALER FOR NON-FUNCTIONING GAUGES DUE TO STEPPER-MOTOR ISSUES. THIS SAME PART HAS BEEN WARRANTED ON OTHER GM VEHICLES, BUT GM REFUSES TO EXTEND THE SAME WARRANTY FOR THE SAME PART ON CHEVY SSR. OTHER SAFETY ISSUE IS THE SERVICE AIR BAG WARNING IS ON AND DEALER REFUSED WARRANTY SERVICE DUE TO AGE OF VEHICLE. BOTH OF THESE ISSUES ARE SAFETY RELATED AND NOT LOOKING FOR WARRANTY OF MAINTENANCE WORK.

STRUCTURE PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2014-09-15
  • VIN: 1GCES14P74B
  • Components: STRUCTURE
  • Summary: THE PASSENGER'S DOOR OF MY SSR WAS BECOMING DIFFICULT TO OPEN AND I WAS CONFIDENT THE ISSUE WAS THE SAME PROBLEM I HAD EXPERIENCED PREVIOUSLY WITH THE DRIVER'S SIDE DOOR. IT IS A KNOWN DEFECT AND RESULTANT TECHNICAL SERVICE BULLETIN (TSB 05-08-64-026) WHICH PREVIOUSLY HAD BEEN FIXED BY KEN DIXON CHEVROLET (JUNE OF 2011). AT THAT TIME, KEN DIXON (NOW MANAGED UNDER WALDORF CHEVY CADILLAC) DECLINED MY REQUEST TO REPLACE PASSENGER'S SIDE DEFECTIVE PART EVEN THOUGH THE TSB HAD INDICATED TO DO SO. WALDORF CHEVY CADILLAC NOW SAYS THE PART REQUIRED TO FIX MY CAR IS DISCONTINUED AND NOT AVAILABLE. I WAS TOLD "IT CANNOT BE FIXED. THE PART IS DISCONTINUED, NOT AVAILABLE FROM GM." I ASKED, "ARE YOU SAYING I HAVE TO LIVE WITH IT AND THERE IS NO FIX? THAT IS, GM ISSUED A TSB AND THEN DISCONTINUED THE PART WITH NO FUTURE PLANS OR OPTIONS FOR CARS THAT ARE LESS THAN 10 YEARS OLD?" THE ANSWER WAS "CORRECT, YOU MAY PICK UP THE CAR". I WAS GIVEN NO INDICATION THAT WALDORF CHEVY CADILLAC OR GM WOULD ATTEMPT TO FIND ANY SOLUTION. WHEN I RECEIVED THE CAR BACK FROM WALDORF CHEVY CADILLAC, THE DOOR IS NO LONGER OPERATIONAL FROM THE INSIDE. I NOW HAVE A CAR WITH A PASSENGER SIDE DOOR THAT CAN NO LONGER BE OPENED FROM THE INSIDE. I HAVE BEEN LEFT TO DRIVE A VEHICLE THAT IS UNSAFE TO DRIVE WITH NO MECHANISM IN PLACE BY GM TO ADDRESS AN ISSUE THAT IS A DOCUMENTED DEFECT IN A CAR THAT IS LESS THAN 10 YEARS OLD AND HAS 30,000 MILES ON IT. I AM CONCERNED WITH HAVING TO DRIVE THIS VEHICLE WITH NO MEANS TO OPEN THE PASSENGER SIDE DOOR FROM THE INSIDE. THIS COULD RESULT IN TRAGIC OUTCOME IN THE CASE OF ACCIDENT, VEHICLE MALFUNCTION OR SOME OTHER INCIDENT REQUIRING IMMEDIATE EXIT FROM THE CAR. I AM AT A COMPLETE LOSS TO UNDERSTAND HOW GM CAN DISCONTINUE A PART IDENTIFIED WITHIN A TSB AS THE FIX FOR A KNOWN PROBLEM AND NOT PROVIDE SOME MEANS TO FIX THE SAFETY ISSUE OF THIS CAR. *TR

  • VIN: 1GCES14PX4B
  • Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM
  • Summary: I BOUGHT A 2004 CHEVROLET SSR IN FEB.11, 2010 WAS A USED VEHICLE NO WARRANTY. TEST DRIVE WAS OK EVERYTHING WORKED AS EXPECTED. I STARTED NOTICING THAT I WAS GOING SLOWER THAN MOST CARS AROUND ME. I CHECKED WITH A FRIEND WHO DROVE BESIDE ME. IT WAS DETERMINED THAT THE SPEEDOMETER WAS OFF 10 TO 15 MPH. I CONTACTED CHEVROLET DEALER ABOUT PROBLEM IN MARCH 2010. I NEEDED TO DROP OFF MY TRUCK FOR A DIAGNOSTIC TESTING. IT WOULD TAKE 24 HOURS & OR 5 TO 7 DAYS AT $150 PER HOUR TO DETERMINE PROBLEM. THE PARTS & REPAIR LABOR TO FIX. I SAID THAT WAS OUTRAGEOUS. PLUS NO TECHNICIANS IN AREA WERE TRAINED ON THE SSR'S ELECTRONICS. I CONTACTED GM FOR HELP. SERVICE REQUEST #71-982295330 THE PROBLEM I WAS EXPERIENCING WAS NOT INCLUDED IN RECALL. NO 2003 THROUGH 2006 SSR'S WERE REPORTED TO BE HAVING ANY PROBLEMS WITH THE INSTRUMENT CLUSTER. THE DEALER FOUND NO PROBLEM & WAS NOT REPAIRED. I HAVE BEEN PUTTING UP WITH THE PROBLEM USING TACHOMETER AS A GUIDE TO SPEED. THE FIRST TIME I START TRUCK IT SEEMS TO BE JUST A FEW MILES PER HOUR OFF. BUT AS I GO THROUGH START CYCLES IT GETS TO BE MORE MPH OFF. IF VEHICLE SITS OVER NIGHT. 12 OR MORE HOURS. IT SEEMS TO RESET ITSELF. I WAS OUT TODAY 4/29/2012 FOR A DRIVE. I WAS PULLED OVER BY A POLICE OFFICER ON RADAR GOING 67 MPH IN A 55 MPH ZONE. I CHECKED MY SPEED AT THE TIME & WAS GOING 55 MPH. THE OFFICER LET ME OFF WITH A WARNING TO PARK VEHICLE TILL IT IS REPAIRED. NOW WHAT DO I DO? CHEVROLET DOES NOT HAVE A RECALL ON THIS VEHICLE & MANY PEOPLE THAT I KNOW ARE SSR OWNERS HAVE HAD THE SAME PROBLEMS WITH INSTRUMENT PANEL GAUGES. IT IS A KNOWN PROBLEM WITH SSR OWNERS. BUT AS I WAS TOLD. MOST HAD IT REPAIRED AT THERE OWN EXPENSE. NOW I HAVE A TRUCK WITH A INACCURATE SPEEDOMETER & NO PLACE TO GET REPAIRS DONE BY EXPERIENCED MECHANICS. I NEED MY SPEEDOMETER FIXED AT GM CHEVROLET EXPENSE. *TR

Negative 2004 Chevrolet Ssr car reviews

  1. Milton Gutkowski 2024-06-04

It's great to see your vehicle sitting by the road while you wait for the tow truck. It looks good in the dealership repair shop, and it would even look good in your garage if you could get it from the dealer to your garage. However, it seems that you have had some issues with this GM product and feel that it has not been stood behind. It's unfortunate that you have had trouble with the three year/36K mile roadside towing assistance, and it's understandable that you feel frustrated. If you're looking for a quality-built vehicle in the $50K range, you may want to consider a foreign brand.

Positive 2004 Chevrolet Ssr car reviews

  1. Antwon Quigley 2024-11-15

This truck is beautiful and in great condition. It drives like a charm and has a lot of get up and go. I absolutely love my SSR. The buying experience was outstanding. The sales person, manager, and financial person were all great and honest. Honesty is hard to come by these days, but they were fantastic. I would highly recommend this dealership to all my friends.

  2. Julio Denesik 2024-11-13

I recently purchased a Tundra pickup truck, and today I added an SSR to my collection. I know it may seem unnecessary, but I couldn't resist the allure of the SSR. The 120-mile drive back home after purchasing it was an absolute joy and probably cured any stress I was feeling. While the SSR may not be for everyone, it could be a great addition to a business promotional campaign. My advice would be to wait patiently until you find a dealer who will sell it to you for MSRP or less, as there are unfortunately too many dealers out there who will try to overcharge you.

  3. Jerod Barton 2024-11-03

I'm so glad to have the opportunity to drive this new type of vehicle.

  4. Saige Rogahn 2024-10-23

I love the attention my SSR gets when I drive it. Everywhere I go, people of all ages ask questions about it. They often assume that I customized it myself, but it's actually a production vehicle made in a factory, and it's an '04 model. I'm proud that it's made in the USA, specifically in Lansing, MI. In fact, I wouldn't have bought it if it wasn't made in the USA.

  5. Uriah Kunze 2024-10-16

Hey there! If you head to the top of town and hit the highway, you'll discover just how much fun driving can be!
