1995 Land rover Discovery problems

land rover logo

The Land Rover Discovery is a series of seven-seater family SUVs, produced under the Land Rover marque, from the British manufacturer Land Rover, and later Jaguar Land Rover. The series is currently in its fifth iteration (or generation, according to the manufacturer), the first of which was introduced in 1989, making the Discovery the first new model series since the launch of the 1970 Range Rover – on which it was based – and only the third new product line since the conception of the Land Rover (vehicle and brand) by Rover in 1948. The model is sometimes called influential, as one of the first to market a true off-road capable family car.

Although the Range Rover had originally been designed as an everyday four wheel drive car that could be used as both a utility vehicle and a family car, it had progressively moved upmarket through its life to evolve into a luxury vehicle sold at a much higher price point. The Discovery was intended to fulfill the role the Range Rover originally was intended for; a segment which was now dominated by Japanese rivals such as the Nissan Patrol, Mitsubishi Pajero and Toyota Land Cruiser. Although positioned below the Range Rover in the company's line-up, the vehicle was both longer and higher, offered more room in the back, and optionally also more seats. Space utilization became more sophisticated in later iterations, but the series keeps offering seats for seven occupants. Despite originally being sold as an affordable alternative to the Range Rover, the Discovery has also progressively moved upmarket through its successive generations to become a bonafide luxury SUV.

The second Discovery (1998) was called the Series II, and though featuring an extended rear body, was otherwise an updated facelift, which carried on the 100 in (2,540 mm) wheelbase frame and rigid, live front and rear axles of the original Range Rover into 2004.

The third iteration – succeeding the series I and II in 2004 - was either titled the Discovery 3 or simply LR3 (in North America and the Middle East). This was the first all-original design for the Discovery. Although it followed the 2002 third generation Range Rover, also switching to fully independent suspension, it still received a separate, but integrated body and frame (IBF) structure. The fourth iteration, as of 2009 – like the series II, was again mainly an update of the new generation – marketed as the Discovery 4, or Land Rover LR4 for North American and Middle Eastern markets.

The fifth iteration of the Discovery, introduced in 2017, no longer sports a numeric suffix. Unlike the previous two generations, it now benefits from a unitized body structure, making it lighter than its predecessor.

Common 1995 Land rover Discovery problems

The Land Rover Discovery, first introduced in 1989, has been praised for its blend of off-road capabilities and on-road comfort:

  1. Door Won't Open Due to Internal Failure of Rear Cargo Door Latch: This issue is common in the Land Rover Discovery, making it difficult for owners to access the cargo area. The problem is often due to the internal failure of the rear cargo door latch, which can be caused by wear and tear or damage from heavy use.
  2. Leaking Head Gaskets May Cause Low Coolant Levels: Leaking head gaskets can lead to low coolant levels, which can cause overheating and damage to the engine. This issue is common in the Land Rover Discovery, particularly in models with high mileage.
  3. Alternator Failure: The alternator is responsible for charging the battery and providing power to the vehicle's electrical systems. In the Land Rover Discovery, alternator failure is a common problem, particularly in models with high mileage. The alternator may need to be replaced to fix this issue.
  4. Water Pump Failure: The water pump is responsible for circulating coolant through the engine to keep it at a safe temperature. In the Land Rover Discovery, water pump failure is a common problem, particularly in models with high mileage. The water pump may need to be replaced to fix this issue.
  5. Coil Failure: The coil is responsible for providing the spark that ignites the fuel in the engine. In the Land Rover Discovery, coil failure is a common problem, particularly in models with high mileage. The coil may need to be replaced to fix this issue.
  6. Front Drive Shaft Breakage: The front drive shaft is responsible for transferring power from the transmission to the front wheels. In the Land Rover Discovery, front drive shaft breakage is a common problem, particularly in models that have been driven hard or off-road.
  7. Radiator Leaks: Radiator leaks are a common problem in the Land Rover Discovery, particularly in models with high mileage. The radiator may need to be repaired or replaced to fix this issue.
  8. Gearbox Problems: Gearbox problems are a common issue in the Land Rover Discovery, with issues ranging from leaking seals to complete failures. These problems can be caused by wear and tear or damage from heavy use.
  9. Electrical Issues: Electrical issues are a common problem in the Land Rover Discovery, with faulty switchgear and dud components being the most common issues. These problems can be caused by wear and tear or damage from heavy use.
  10. Rust and Badly Fitting Doors: Rust and poorly fitting doors are common issues in the Land Rover Discovery, particularly in older models. These problems can be caused by exposure to the elements or poor maintenance.

In summary, the Land Rover Discovery, particularly the 1995 model year, has several common problems that owners should be aware of. These issues include door latch failure, leaking head gaskets, alternator failure, water pump failure, coil failure, front drive shaft breakage, radiator leaks, gearbox problems, electrical issues, and rust and poorly fitting doors. Owners should be vigilant in maintaining their vehicles and addressing these issues as they arise to ensure the longevity and reliability of their Land Rover Discovery.

Negative 1995 Land rover Discovery car reviews

  1. Marcus Johnson 2024-09-29

I would have loved to keep this car for longer, but unfortunately, the parts and labor were too expensive for me to maintain. Although there were some issues with the ABS and brakes, which made it difficult to make turns, and the transfer case never worked, I still found it to be a solid and safe car. It was roomy and comfortable, and I especially loved the dual climate controls and the weather band, which were a must-have for me. However, I did experience some problems with the rear hatch latch and the cup holders were in a bit of a silly spot. Additionally, the gas mileage was not great and it would sometimes stall if the AC was on for too long. Overall, it was a fun car to drive and I enjoyed my time with it.

  2. Rudolph Durgan 2024-09-16

The vehicle has experienced a number of issues, including water in the front parking light assembly, a leaky windshield, multiple ignition lock replacements, transfer case and seal problems, vibration at freeway speeds that has been difficult to diagnose, water pump issues, sun roof and rear door seal problems, a failed power window, and a rear prop shaft coupler issue. Despite these challenges, I have invested over $11K in maintenance costs over the past 12 months. It is clear that the vehicle requires a high level of maintenance.

  3. Randy Funk 2024-08-04

It's unfortunate that the quality of peripheral parts is not up to par, but the overall vehicle design is fantastic. I've had some issues with the ignition lock not releasing my key, but despite that, I've put 135K miles on it. I've had to replace a number of parts, including the transfer case, alternator, catalytic converter, exhaust system, O2 sensors, intake manifold gasket, transmission oil hoses/pipes, water pump, 6 sets of ignition wires, steering column, window gaskets, and coolant expansion tank. The brakes have been squealing since mile 1, and I've noticed that the doors tend to fly open. Additionally, the rear cargo deck is rusted out, so I would advise owners to check under the thick mat. Overall, it's been a bit of a bumpy ride, but I still appreciate the vehicle's design and features.

  4. Zackery Cassin 2024-06-06

The vehicle is fantastic in the snow! Although I do wish it snowed 24 hours a day, my kids absolutely love the jump seats and stadium viewing position. Personally, I adore the driving solidness and clear view of the road. The truck has a great center of gravity, making you feel confident in turns or at higher speeds (if you can ever get to that level). While some may argue that this vehicle requires regular maintenance, it's important to keep up with alternators, oil-radiator-power steering-transmission leaks, rear hatch latches, sunroof motors, rust, multifunction switch (the steering column switch that controls headlights, turn signals, high beams, etc.... try getting stuck with that), and so on. Don't let that discourage you though, as the benefits of this vehicle far outweigh any maintenance concerns!

  5. Erwin Goldner 2024-01-20

If you're considering purchasing a Land Rover, it's important to be aware of the potential costs associated with maintenance. For example, an oil change alone can cost around $60, while replacing the regulator on the rear passenger window could set you back $330. Additionally, the ignition lock assembly may need to be replaced, with parts costing around $415. While it's true that some Land Rovers may experience mechanical issues, it's important to note that these can often be resolved by a skilled mechanic. However, it's worth noting that repairs can be costly, with some issues potentially costing around $1,500. It's also worth noting that some Land Rovers may experience issues such as oil leaks or vibrations at higher speeds. Despite these potential issues, many people find the stylish exterior of Land Rovers to be very appealing. Ultimately, it's up to you to decide whether a Land Rover is the right choice for you and your needs.

I've put 800 miles on it since I bought it and absolutely love it. Enough said.

This SUV is a great choice to have. It's fun to drive and you can rely on it no matter what the situation. If you haven't experienced a Land Rover yet, I highly recommend it.

I absolutely love my Disco, even after driving it for 230,000 miles and counting! I purchased it brand new in 1996 with only 9.3 miles on it. Although I have experienced some of the same issues as other drivers, I have found that they are often minor problems that are easily fixed. For example, when my windows stopped working, I initially thought it was a costly motor issue, but it turned out to be a simple $7 switch. In fact, the only things I have had to replace in all these miles are the tires and brakes, and the rear seat belt buckles, which were broken due to my own carelessness. Overall, I am extremely satisfied with my Disco and would highly recommend it to anyone looking for a reliable and long-lasting vehicle.

  4. Nicola Frami 2024-03-17

This is such a great vehicle to drive! The high seating position provides excellent visibility, and the V-8 motor gives it plenty of power. Plus, the air conditioning is one of the coldest I've ever experienced. The tight turning radius is impressive, especially for a truck, and my kids absolutely adore the jump seats in the rear. The CD changer and remote entry are also super convenient and reliable.

  5. Coty Berge 2024-02-22

With a few modifications, the Disco can be an awesome machine. Adding a new computer (Motec) will give maximum control and efficiency over the engine management system. A stroker kit can take the engine from 3.9 to 4.8 litres, balanced and blueprinted of course. Range Rover viscous couplings, Bilstein steering dampers, high flow injectors, and an active suspension system can also be added to enhance the performance.
