Land rover Discovery problems

The Land Rover Discovery is a series of seven-seater family SUVs, produced under the Land Rover marque, from the British manufacturer Land Rover, and later Jaguar Land Rover. The series is currently in its fifth iteration (or generation, according to the manufacturer), the first of which was introduced in 1989, making the Discovery the first new model series since the launch of the 1970 Range Rover – on which it was based – and only the third new product line since the conception of the Land Rover (vehicle and brand) by Rover in 1948. The model is sometimes called influential, as one of the first to market a true off-road capable family car.

Although the Range Rover had originally been designed as an everyday four wheel drive car that could be used as both a utility vehicle and a family car, it had progressively moved upmarket through its life to evolve into a luxury vehicle sold at a much higher price point. The Discovery was intended to fulfill the role the Range Rover originally was intended for; a segment which was now dominated by Japanese rivals such as the Nissan Patrol, Mitsubishi Pajero and Toyota Land Cruiser. Although positioned below the Range Rover in the company's line-up, the vehicle was both longer and higher, offered more room in the back, and optionally also more seats. Space utilization became more sophisticated in later iterations, but the series keeps offering seats for seven occupants. Despite originally being sold as an affordable alternative to the Range Rover, the Discovery has also progressively moved upmarket through its successive generations to become a bonafide luxury SUV.

The second Discovery (1998) was called the Series II, and though featuring an extended rear body, was otherwise an updated facelift, which carried on the 100 in (2,540 mm) wheelbase frame and rigid, live front and rear axles of the original Range Rover into 2004.

The third iteration – succeeding the series I and II in 2004 - was either titled the Discovery 3 or simply LR3 (in North America and the Middle East). This was the first all-original design for the Discovery. Although it followed the 2002 third generation Range Rover, also switching to fully independent suspension, it still received a separate, but integrated body and frame (IBF) structure. The fourth iteration, as of 2009 – like the series II, was again mainly an update of the new generation – marketed as the Discovery 4, or Land Rover LR4 for North American and Middle Eastern markets.

The fifth iteration of the Discovery, introduced in 2017, no longer sports a numeric suffix. Unlike the previous two generations, it now benefits from a unitized body structure, making it lighter than its predecessor.

Common Land rover Discovery problems

Based on the complaints from owners of Land Rover Discovery cars, here is a list of common problems associated with these vehicles:

  1. Electric Faults:
    • One of the most reported issues involves electronic problems affecting the door central locking system and windows. These electrical faults can impact the overall operation of the vehicle and lead to inconvenience for the owners.
  2. Front Lower Control Arm Issues:
    • Land Rover Discovery 4 drivers have reported that the front lower control arms may require replacement after around 50,000 miles due to wear and tear. This can affect the steering mechanism of the vehicle.
  3. Faulty Air Suspension:
    • Air suspension is crucial for off-road vehicles like the Land Rover Discovery. After approximately 100,000 miles, leaks in the rubber components of the air suspension system can occur, leading to issues with the vehicle's suspension.
  4. Timing Chain Replacement:
    • Despite manufacturer recommendations to change the oil every 15,000 miles, some owners have experienced damage to the timing chain by delaying oil changes. This highlights the importance of regular maintenance to prevent costly repairs.
  5. Water Pump Leaks:
    • A common issue reported by Discovery owners is a leaky water pump. If not addressed promptly, a leak in the water pump can result in engine overheating, potentially causing severe damage to the vehicle.
  6. Multimedia Infotainment System Problems:
    • Owners of the Discovery 5 have complained about issues with the multimedia infotainment system. Problems include slow response, freezing, and difficulties with pairing smartphones. Software updates are recommended to address these glitches.
  7. Malfunctioning Electric Handbrakes:
    • Some Discovery owners have faced issues with electric handbrakes sticking on, which can be a safety concern. Additionally, problems with the Tow Assist system have been reported, impacting the functionality of the vehicle.
  8. Engine Failures:
    • Certain models, like the 3.0 Sd6 V6 diesel, have experienced catastrophic engine failures. Reports of metal fragments found in the engine oil of the Sd4 diesel suggest potential issues with engine components.
  9. Air Suspension Pump Failures:
    • Failures in the air suspension's airbags pumps can lead to the vehicle listing to one side, posing a safety risk while driving. This issue highlights the importance of regular inspections and maintenance of the air suspension system.

These common problems with Land Rover Discovery cars emphasize the importance of regular maintenance, prompt repairs, and thorough inspections to ensure the longevity and reliability of these vehicles.

  • Date Of Incident: 2024-07-20
  • Date Complaint: 2024-07-20
  • VIN: SALRU2RVXL2
  • Components: UNKNOWN OR OTHER
  • Summary: Driving with my children, right rear door all of a sudden opened without warning. Doors were all locked. Pulled over, closed the door but latch was not catching with door. It's as if nothing was holding the door in place. I had to have my 14 year old daughter hold the car door while we canceled our vacation and drove three hours back home.
Land rover Discovery 2019
  • Date Of Incident: 2024-05-18
  • Date Complaint: 2024-06-16
  • VIN: SALRG2RVXK2
  • Components: ENGINE
  • Summary: On May 18, 2024 at approximately 4pm, my husband turned on my 2019 Land Rover Discovery from a cold start after sitting parked for about 20 minutes. We heard a slight rattle upon start-up, so he turned the car ignition off. He restarted the car after about a minute and we did not hear the rattle. We began driving the car and after about 2-3 miles, the car started shuddering and began slowing down but did not completely stall. My husband turned off the car again and we waited for a couple of minutes and he restarted the car. It drove fine for about a mile and began shuddering/hesitating again as we were driving. Then the car made a loud warning sound, a warning light flickered on the dash and the engine completely turned off as we were driving. We were in the middle of traffic and had we been on the freeway, there would have been catastrophic consequences as the engine completely stopped. We thankfully were able to coast to a side-street on our immediate right and stopped. The engine would not turn over and my husband was unable to restart the car. I immediately made an appointment with my local Land Rover dealership for 3 days later (next available) and had the truck towed there. After inspection, they told me they believed the main bearing in the engine failed due to an oil pump failure and that the engine would need to be replaced. My truck is 5 years old and has less than 100,000 miles (only about 80K). No previous warning lights! A car this expensive and with so few miles with regular maintenance service being performed by either Land Rover or AAA, shouldn’t need a new engine. This is after I’d had the camshaft adjuster/timing chain replaced in this truck by the same dealership only 3 months prior! After speaking to the service person, he informed me that 2 other Land Rovers were sitting in the dealership waiting for the SAME engine and waiting for 4-5 months to be delivered from the manufacturer with NO ETA! Known, dangerous problem! Please help resolve!

  • Date Of Incident: 2024-04-13
  • Date Complaint: 2024-04-20
  • VIN: SALRW4EU3P2
  • Components: STEERING,LANE DEPARTURE
  • Summary: Dear NHTSA, I am writing to report a safety issue with my 2023 Land Rover Discovery Metropolitan that occurred on April [XXX] 2024. VIN: [XXX] The issue involved the steering wheel locking unexpectedly. After parking the car overnight for 15 hours, I returned to find a message indicating lane departure assist wasn't working, and the steering wheel was completely locked and inoperable. I attempted various troubleshooting steps, including changing driving modes, restarting the car, and checking for software updates, but none resolved the problem. While the car functioned normally in terms of forward and backward movement, the locked steering wheel prevented any turning ability. There were also no warning lights or error messages displayed on the dashboard. The only solution I found was to perform a hard reset by disconnecting the negative battery cable for 3 minutes and then reconnecting it. It's concerning that a similar issue appears to be reported by other Land Rover owners online, particularly with Defender models. [XXX] My primary concern is the possibility of this malfunction occurring while driving, which could lead to a serious accident. There seems to be no guarantee that this isn't a potential risk. I will be in contact with the Land Rover dealership locally and urge NHTSA to investigate this potential safety concern with Land Rover vehicles. Thank you for your time and attention to this matter. Sincerely, [XXX] INFORMATION REDACTED PURSUANT TO THE FREEDOM OF INFORMATION ACT (FOIA), 5 U.S.C. 552(B)(6)

  • Summary: The vehicle leaks water from the top, middle and top right (passenger) of the windshield. Whenever it's raining water drips down the inside of the windshield and falls on the dash. in the mornings, after heavy rains, water can be found on the drivers and passengers seat, as well as in the cupholders this waterfalls all over the central electronic system and navigation, and seems only a matter of time before these systems will fail as well. When reporting it to the dealer, the dealer mentioned that this has been a common problem for this generation discovery, however, are not willing to replace the windshield under warranty.

  • Summary: At the end of 2022 and early last year, I had multiple issues with the roof of my 2018 Land Rover Discovery coming apart/detached from the roof. On [XXX] a piece of my roof came off again that had already been replaced in 2023. There are four separate roof pieces and this is the fourth time one has separated from the vehicle (I believe three of the pieces at this point have detached). Two times, the roof pieces came off while I was driving on the highway, this could have seriously injured someone, luckily neither time hit a car or pedestrian. Land Rover will not accept that this is an issue with the build/body of the vehicle. I found a Land Rover forum where many people are having these same issues: [XXX] I am concerned that this will happen on the highway, cause an accident, and owner's will be held liable. I have attached multiple pictures I have taken reflecting this issue over the last year and a half, I tried to add more but I am receiving an error message. • Summary: To whom it may concern, I am writing to file a complaint about a serious defect in my Land Rover Discovery vehicle. The defect is a roof leakage near the windshield where it attaches to the body. This causes water to seep into the interior of the car and damage the electrical components. The service technician at the dealership informed me that they need to break the windshield in order to fix the leak and then replace the windshield. The estimate for this repair was around $3,500, which is unacceptable for a relatively new vehicle. I bought this pre-inspected vehicle in mid-2022 from the Land Rover dealership. I have learned from online sources that this is a common problem with many Land Rover vehicles, and that it poses a safety hazard as well as a financial burden for the owners. I request that you investigate this issue and issue a recall for all affected vehicles. I also request that you reimburse me for the cost of the repair or provide me with a replacement vehicle. I appreciate your attention to this matter and hope to hear from you soon. Latest negative Land rover Discovery car reviews

  1. Niko Grant 2025-03-29

    Vehicle year: 2004

Absolutely! I will never give up my 2004 HSE Land Rover. It does require some research and a significant amount of money to keep it going, but it's worth it. I purchased my Land Rover used in 2008 for $15k with 75k miles on it. I have invested a lot of money into it for repairs, such as the head gasket, suspension airbags, braking system, front drive shaft, tires, steering arm, and more. Currently, I have at least another $2k on the list for repairs, including replacing the valve lifters, door mechanism, and right ABS sensor. With 82k miles on it, I have gotten 7k (82k - 75k) miles out of it and spent $14k ($12k + $2k) on repairs. If you are considering buying this car, you should be prepared emotionally and financially, especially if you are buying it used. However, if you are willing to stay on top of it and invest in all the necessary repairs, you will have a fighting chance of getting some miles out of it before you have to spend thousands on it. As an older guy (54 years old), I just wanted to own a Land Rover and enjoy it as a toy. I anticipated difficulties, but to be honest, it has been worse than I thought. Nonetheless, I am at an age where I don't get worked up about it and just enjoy taking my family on road trips with it. Recently, my sister called me because my nephew (age 18) wanted a Land Rover for his first car. I advised him to read about all the problems and join a forum for Land Rover owners to anticipate all the repairs before they happen. I also suggested that my sister put $15k into an account as a reserve fund for any repairs. Well, that was the end of my nephew getting a Land Rover.

I purchased my 1997 Discovery in February 2007 with 99k miles on it for $3800 from a charity auction on Ebay. Although the rear view mirror has a small burn mark on it, the rear window controls from the front seat aren't working, and the spare tire cover was broken off, I still love my Land Rover Discovery. It allows me to easily navigate through snow and rain, which my rear wheel drive Lexus would struggle with. Additionally, I can bring my bike and all my beach gear to the beach without having to worry about a pickup truck taking up space at home. The Discovery is perfect for my needs! It feels like a truck, and I can tow anything I need to. The vehicle is strong enough to carry anything inside or outside of it, and I know it will last me a good 200k miles.

We recently purchased a 2018 Land Rover, but unfortunately experienced some issues with the vehicle within the first 30 days. Despite having to send it back for repairs 5 more times over the next 90 days due to a factory defect, the customer service team provided us with an old, used, late model Land Rover while they worked on some options for us. Although we were disappointed to hear that we could only accept a lesser vehicle than the one we had originally purchased, we decided to get out of the deal. While there was a fee to do so, we understood that this was company policy. Overall, we had a mixed experience with Land Rover, but we appreciate their efforts to resolve the issue. We encourage anyone considering a Land Rover to do their research and make an informed decision. Thank you for listening to our story. Nn

The 2019 Land Rover Discovery HSE has a lot of great features. The interior is modern and upscale with beautiful light grey leather seats, dash, console, and headliner that are surprisingly easy to clean. The vehicle has lots of safety features and drives well in bad weather. The third row is a nice size and there are abundant and clever storage spaces throughout. The stereo sounds great, but can be frustrating to get working. The heated windshield and auto high beam headlights are fantastic. However, there have been some issues with the infotainment system and the vehicle has had to be serviced several times. Despite these issues, the Land Rover Discovery HSE is a great vehicle overall. The sunroof cover on the third row was rattling, but the dealership fixed it when we took it back. We had to take the car in three times for various issues, including a missing clip on one of the side panel covers in the cargo area. It was frustrating to have to go back multiple times, but the dealership eventually ordered the part and fixed the issue. After purchasing the vehicle, I noticed that the steering wheel felt heavy and the car was difficult to keep centered in the lane. Despite asking the Land Rover dealer to check the alignment and steering multiple times, they said there was nothing wrong. It was only after a year of driving that I was told the tires needed to be replaced due to uneven wear caused by misalignment. Although it was frustrating to have to pay $1300 out of pocket to replace the tires and align the vehicle, I did not have it done at the dealership. Additionally, the second row center headrest makes visibility through the rear window difficult and is hard for kids to fold down. It would be helpful if Land Rover had a control for the driver to lower the headrest. Overall, while the concept of the vehicle is good, the quality of the build and parts are unreliable and not up to par for a $70k vehicle. I have decided to trade it in for a BMW X5 and will not be purchasing another Land Rover in the future.

We have been Land Rover owners for almost 20 years. However, five years ago, we switched to Toyota (we bought a 4Runner and a Lexus SUV) because owning a Land Rover was causing too many interruptions in our lives. The service manager and I used to joke that I should park my cars at the dealership because they spent more time in the shop than in my garage. After four years of owning Toyota and Lexus, we decided to give Land Rover another chance and purchased a 2018 Discovery and a 2018 Range Rover Sport, both brand new and paid in cash. Unfortunately, after only 7,000 miles and 5 months, the Discovery has been in the shop for 18 days due to major brake, software, and AEB issues. The Range Rover Sport is also experiencing brake and software issues and has been in the shop for about 8 days. Although Land Rover products are great for snow, off-road, and daily use, we are disappointed that we are once again dealing with vehicles that have lost a significant amount of their value and require frequent visits to the service facility. The dealership has been very responsive and helpful, but we are considering trading in the Discovery for a Ford, Toyota (Lexus), or Jeep. Our recommendation is not to buy a Land Rover product. We plan to drive these vehicles for another three years before trading them in.

I think Land Rover products are great and I'm not sure why some people have negative opinions about them. My wife and I bought an '04 LR Discovery SE7 as our daily driver because we needed a vehicle that could comfortably seat our three children and handle off-road conditions, since we love the outdoors. We definitely made the right choice! Although it can be expensive to purchase and maintain, if you take care of it properly (just like any other vehicle), you shouldn't have any issues. We've never been stranded or experienced any catastrophic failures. My Disco is almost at 100K miles and I plan to put many more miles on it. It's amazing off-road and just as amazing on the highway.

We took a leap of faith and went for a great deal on a 2018 leftover lease for the Disco, despite potential reliability issues. I absolutely love the Diesel! The drivetrain is excellent and shared with the big dog Range Rover, making it smooth, powerful, and quiet. With an overall 25 MPG in mixed driving, this 5000lb tank is more than enough for me. The interior is beautiful and obviously spacious, with excellent LED headlights and super comfortable seats that provide a commanding seating position. At this point, we haven't had any issues, except for the less than bright interior lights and having to use an exterior EZ pass due to the heated windshield. I even enjoy using the in control app, which has worked perfectly for us!

This vehicle is a joy to drive, providing excellent visibility of the road ahead and around you. While the fuel economy may not be the best, it's a small price to pay for such a fantastic driving experience. I've had a great experience with the customer service at my dealer, who are both professional and attentive. I'm looking forward to testing out the vehicle's off-road capabilities at the Land Rover Dealer Sponsored 'Wheels event' this winter.

Hi there! We bought this Discovery used with 104k on it and have taken it on numerous trips and 4 wheeling. It's been amazing so far, as we have yet to get stuck. Our Disco has jump seats in the back, which is perfect for transporting extra kids or just putting some distance between the front seats. With the second row seats and jump seats folded up, this vehicle can haul quite a bit. The only downside is the MPG, but let's be honest, most SUVs aren't that great on gas anyway.

This is my third Land Rover purchase and I am thrilled with my new Discovery LUX. The latest technology is excellent, and the safety and parking features are a huge plus. The dealership went above and beyond when we had an issue with the windshield washer jets, providing us with a loaner and fixing the issue promptly. Although the activity key is not working, the dealer has ordered us a new one and we are excited to try it out. I love the convenience of being able to open and close the back hatch by waving my foot under it, especially when my hands are full. The smart cruise control is a game changer, making driving so much easier and stress-free. The changeable ambient lighting in the car is also a fun feature. Overall, I am extremely satisfied with my purchase and the exceptional service provided by the dealership.
