Land rover Discovery problems

The Land Rover Discovery is a series of seven-seater family SUVs, produced under the Land Rover marque, from the British manufacturer Land Rover, and later Jaguar Land Rover. The series is currently in its fifth iteration (or generation, according to the manufacturer), the first of which was introduced in 1989, making the Discovery the first new model series since the launch of the 1970 Range Rover – on which it was based – and only the third new product line since the conception of the Land Rover (vehicle and brand) by Rover in 1948. The model is sometimes called influential, as one of the first to market a true off-road capable family car.
Although the Range Rover had originally been designed as an everyday four wheel drive car that could be used as both a utility vehicle and a family car, it had progressively moved upmarket through its life to evolve into a luxury vehicle sold at a much higher price point. The Discovery was intended to fulfill the role the Range Rover originally was intended for; a segment which was now dominated by Japanese rivals such as the Nissan Patrol, Mitsubishi Pajero and Toyota Land Cruiser. Although positioned below the Range Rover in the company's line-up, the vehicle was both longer and higher, offered more room in the back, and optionally also more seats. Space utilization became more sophisticated in later iterations, but the series keeps offering seats for seven occupants. Despite originally being sold as an affordable alternative to the Range Rover, the Discovery has also progressively moved upmarket through its successive generations to become a bonafide luxury SUV.
The second Discovery (1998) was called the Series II, and though featuring an extended rear body, was otherwise an updated facelift, which carried on the 100 in (2,540 mm) wheelbase frame and rigid, live front and rear axles of the original Range Rover into 2004.
The third iteration – succeeding the series I and II in 2004 - was either titled the Discovery 3 or simply LR3 (in North America and the Middle East). This was the first all-original design for the Discovery. Although it followed the 2002 third generation Range Rover, also switching to fully independent suspension, it still received a separate, but integrated body and frame (IBF) structure. The fourth iteration, as of 2009 – like the series II, was again mainly an update of the new generation – marketed as the Discovery 4, or Land Rover LR4 for North American and Middle Eastern markets.
The fifth iteration of the Discovery, introduced in 2017, no longer sports a numeric suffix. Unlike the previous two generations, it now benefits from a unitized body structure, making it lighter than its predecessor.

Common Land rover Discovery problems
Based on the complaints from owners of Land Rover Discovery cars, here is a list of common problems associated with these vehicles:
- Electric Faults:
- One of the most reported issues involves electronic problems affecting the door central locking system and windows. These electrical faults can impact the overall operation of the vehicle and lead to inconvenience for the owners.
- Front Lower Control Arm Issues:
- Land Rover Discovery 4 drivers have reported that the front lower control arms may require replacement after around 50,000 miles due to wear and tear. This can affect the steering mechanism of the vehicle.
- Faulty Air Suspension:
- Air suspension is crucial for off-road vehicles like the Land Rover Discovery. After approximately 100,000 miles, leaks in the rubber components of the air suspension system can occur, leading to issues with the vehicle's suspension.
- Timing Chain Replacement:
- Despite manufacturer recommendations to change the oil every 15,000 miles, some owners have experienced damage to the timing chain by delaying oil changes. This highlights the importance of regular maintenance to prevent costly repairs.
- Water Pump Leaks:
- A common issue reported by Discovery owners is a leaky water pump. If not addressed promptly, a leak in the water pump can result in engine overheating, potentially causing severe damage to the vehicle.
- Multimedia Infotainment System Problems:
- Owners of the Discovery 5 have complained about issues with the multimedia infotainment system. Problems include slow response, freezing, and difficulties with pairing smartphones. Software updates are recommended to address these glitches.
- Malfunctioning Electric Handbrakes:
- Some Discovery owners have faced issues with electric handbrakes sticking on, which can be a safety concern. Additionally, problems with the Tow Assist system have been reported, impacting the functionality of the vehicle.
- Engine Failures:
- Certain models, like the 3.0 Sd6 V6 diesel, have experienced catastrophic engine failures. Reports of metal fragments found in the engine oil of the Sd4 diesel suggest potential issues with engine components.
- Air Suspension Pump Failures:
- Failures in the air suspension's airbags pumps can lead to the vehicle listing to one side, posing a safety risk while driving. This issue highlights the importance of regular inspections and maintenance of the air suspension system.
These common problems with Land Rover Discovery cars emphasize the importance of regular maintenance, prompt repairs, and thorough inspections to ensure the longevity and reliability of these vehicles.

Land rover Discovery 2019
- Date Of Incident: 2024-05-18
- Date Complaint: 2024-06-16
- VIN: SALRG2RVXK2
- Components: ENGINE
- Summary: On May 18, 2024 at approximately 4pm, my husband turned on my 2019 Land Rover Discovery from a cold start after sitting parked for about 20 minutes. We heard a slight rattle upon start-up, so he turned the car ignition off. He restarted the car after about a minute and we did not hear the rattle. We began driving the car and after about 2-3 miles, the car started shuddering and began slowing down but did not completely stall. My husband turned off the car again and we waited for a couple of minutes and he restarted the car. It drove fine for about a mile and began shuddering/hesitating again as we were driving. Then the car made a loud warning sound, a warning light flickered on the dash and the engine completely turned off as we were driving. We were in the middle of traffic and had we been on the freeway, there would have been catastrophic consequences as the engine completely stopped. We thankfully were able to coast to a side-street on our immediate right and stopped. The engine would not turn over and my husband was unable to restart the car. I immediately made an appointment with my local Land Rover dealership for 3 days later (next available) and had the truck towed there. After inspection, they told me they believed the main bearing in the engine failed due to an oil pump failure and that the engine would need to be replaced. My truck is 5 years old and has less than 100,000 miles (only about 80K). No previous warning lights! A car this expensive and with so few miles with regular maintenance service being performed by either Land Rover or AAA, shouldn’t need a new engine. This is after I’d had the camshaft adjuster/timing chain replaced in this truck by the same dealership only 3 months prior! After speaking to the service person, he informed me that 2 other Land Rovers were sitting in the dealership waiting for the SAME engine and waiting for 4-5 months to be delivered from the manufacturer with NO ETA! Known, dangerous problem! Please help resolve!

- Components: STEERING,LANE DEPARTURE
- Summary: Dear NHTSA, I am writing to report a safety issue with my 2023 Land Rover Discovery Metropolitan that occurred on April [XXX] 2024. VIN: [XXX] The issue involved the steering wheel locking unexpectedly. After parking the car overnight for 15 hours, I returned to find a message indicating lane departure assist wasn't working, and the steering wheel was completely locked and inoperable. I attempted various troubleshooting steps, including changing driving modes, restarting the car, and checking for software updates, but none resolved the problem. While the car functioned normally in terms of forward and backward movement, the locked steering wheel prevented any turning ability. There were also no warning lights or error messages displayed on the dashboard. The only solution I found was to perform a hard reset by disconnecting the negative battery cable for 3 minutes and then reconnecting it. It's concerning that a similar issue appears to be reported by other Land Rover owners online, particularly with Defender models. [XXX] My primary concern is the possibility of this malfunction occurring while driving, which could lead to a serious accident. There seems to be no guarantee that this isn't a potential risk. I will be in contact with the Land Rover dealership locally and urge NHTSA to investigate this potential safety concern with Land Rover vehicles. Thank you for your time and attention to this matter. Sincerely, [XXX] INFORMATION REDACTED PURSUANT TO THE FREEDOM OF INFORMATION ACT (FOIA), 5 U.S.C. 552(B)(6)

- Summary: The vehicle leaks water from the top, middle and top right (passenger) of the windshield. Whenever it's raining water drips down the inside of the windshield and falls on the dash. in the mornings, after heavy rains, water can be found on the drivers and passengers seat, as well as in the cupholders this waterfalls all over the central electronic system and navigation, and seems only a matter of time before these systems will fail as well. When reporting it to the dealer, the dealer mentioned that this has been a common problem for this generation discovery, however, are not willing to replace the windshield under warranty.

- Summary: At the end of 2022 and early last year, I had multiple issues with the roof of my 2018 Land Rover Discovery coming apart/detached from the roof. On [XXX] a piece of my roof came off again that had already been replaced in 2023. There are four separate roof pieces and this is the fourth time one has separated from the vehicle (I believe three of the pieces at this point have detached). Two times, the roof pieces came off while I was driving on the highway, this could have seriously injured someone, luckily neither time hit a car or pedestrian. Land Rover will not accept that this is an issue with the build/body of the vehicle. I found a Land Rover forum where many people are having these same issues: [XXX] I am concerned that this will happen on the highway, cause an accident, and owner's will be held liable. I have attached multiple pictures I have taken reflecting this issue over the last year and a half, I tried to add more but I am receiving an error message. - Summary: To whom it may concern, I am writing to file a complaint about a serious defect in my Land Rover Discovery vehicle. The defect is a roof leakage near the windshield where it attaches to the body. This causes water to seep into the interior of the car and damage the electrical components. The service technician at the dealership informed me that they need to break the windshield in order to fix the leak and then replace the windshield. The estimate for this repair was around $3,500, which is unacceptable for a relatively new vehicle. I bought this pre-inspected vehicle in mid-2022 from the Land Rover dealership. I have learned from online sources that this is a common problem with many Land Rover vehicles, and that it poses a safety hazard as well as a financial burden for the owners. I request that you investigate this issue and issue a recall for all affected vehicles. I also request that you reimburse me for the cost of the repair or provide me with a replacement vehicle. I appreciate your attention to this matter and hope to hear from you soon. Congratulations on your purchase of the car you always wanted back in 11/2008! Although it initially ran well, it seems like you had some major issues with it after about a year of ownership. It can be frustrating when unexpected repairs come up, especially with luxury cars that can be expensive to maintain. It's great to hear that it has never shut down on you, but it's understandable that you wouldn't want to invest any more money into it. Thank you for sharing your experience and hopefully, you'll be able to find a luxury car that is more manageable to maintain in the future.

Hey there! I'm actually the third owner of a 1999 Discovery II. I had a great experience with it and wanted to share some tips with you. I found that investing in genuine LR parts from the beginning was key to avoiding any issues down the line. If you take care of the vehicle, it will definitely reward you with unlimited capability. I know some people have complained about reliability, but I think being proactive instead of reactive is the way to go. Also, just a heads up, I would avoid the ACE system at all costs and get Waxoyl treatment. Hope this helps!

Best value for the money and with manual transmission. It gets 20mpg on the highway and 14mpg in the city, which is not bad for a heavy V8 SUV.

This car was a Parts can be expensive. However, if you are unable to do the work yourself or don't have enough money to pay someone else to do it, it's best to find a local Land Rover specialist mechanic and build a good relationship with them. It's also recommended to get a code reader. As I have 18s, snow tires can be costly, so I'm considering getting some 16s from an S trim level. Although there are some features that my two previous cars had that this car doesn't, such as the wing mirrors not auto-dimming and being too small, and the window switches in the front being located in a strange spot, there are still many features that I really like. For instance, the heated seats work very well, the car has 2 sliding sunroofs and two curved panes over the rear jump seats, and the A/C works really well. The heated windshield is also a godsend, especially when it starts to fog up when the A/C is on. Additionally, the car has Hill descent control and one of the most sophisticated traction control systems at the time. Overall, I think this is the best-looking Land Rover Discovery generation and perhaps the coolest 7-seater car you can buy. Although I haven't been through a winter yet or taken it off-road, I'm excited to take it on many adventures! If you come across a good one, go for it! Just remember to be prepared to maintain it.

Hey there! I bought this truck with 50k miles and it's been quite the adventure. In the past year, I've had to replace the battery, plugs and wires, thermostat, tires, fuel filter, air cleaner, brakes and rotors, muffler, and more. But let me tell you, this truck is unstoppable in the snow! The gas mileage isn't the best at 12-13mpg and the acceleration is a bit slow, but with frequent oil changes, high octane fuel, and fuel additives, you can minimize the engine's known valve problems. It's a great truck if you're able to perform your own maintenance, as dealer prices can be ridiculous. Luckily, there are many suppliers for parts. Thanks for reading!

Hi there! I wanted to share my experience with my wife's disco that we purchased back in '99. It's an SD7 rare model in black non-leather and had 40k on it when we got it. Despite a few minor issues like the power door track for the driver and passenger doors breaking, it's been a reliable SUV with no major problems. The rear windows don't work, but I think it's just a switch issue. It now has 193K on it and still starts every time! Admittedly, it did have an oil leak at 50k, but if you can overlook that, you'll love this SUV. It still rides great after all these years!

The car has great mileage and third row seating, which is a plus. However, I have experienced some issues with the car being in the shop for over 60 days since I owned it. The first windshield leaked and it took about a month to get a replacement that wasn't broken. Currently, the car is in the shop for the fourth time due to the 'Engine Oil Critically Low' warning on the dashboard, even though the oil has never been low when checked. Although the dealership has been terrific in providing great loaners and service, I am tired of dealing with this error. Additionally, the entertainment and navigation systems are slow and not intuitive to use. On the bright side, the rear backup camera is great, but the 360-degree view is not 100% accurate and cannot be displayed simultaneously with the rear view.

I picked up my Disco last August, but unfortunately, it has been nothing but trouble. It has been back to the dealership six times now, and each time it takes 7-10 days to fix. Despite having only 5000 miles on it, I have had non-stop issues, many of which have been featured on here. The infotainment system has been updated seven times, but it is still very much broken. The cameras, sensors, apps, nav, and bluetooth are all faulty, and the car gets stuck off then gets stuck on even when the car is turned completely off and I am out of it. It's been a frustrating experience. Currently, the dealership is trying to fix a few issues, including the hood cable being too long, the infamous infotainment system disaster, no less than three warning lights on, windshield washer fluid spilling everywhere and always showing it empty (even though it has not ever been used), and the car randomly shutting off and going into an idle mode while driving down the road. The service guy today told me that he doesn't know why no one ever called me because it could have been very unsafe and he was sure that it scared me (it did!), and that this

I have replaced the window regulators a few times, but I was able to find a cost-effective solution. I also had a head gasket leak that was repaired under warranty, and I am currently exploring my options for repairing it again. I replaced the failing power steering pump with an aftermarket part, which saved me money compared to the dealer's quote. I had some trouble with the check engine light and emissions, but after a few trips to the dealer and some repairs, the issue was resolved. While there has been some oil leakage since 50K miles, I have been monitoring the situation and taking appropriate action. Although the dealer quoted me $5500 for necessary repairs in May, I am currently evaluating my options and making a plan to address any issues. Overall, I am confident in my ability to maintain and care for my car, and I am committed to ensuring its longevity and reliability.

I've had this car for 2 years and 4 months and it currently has 35K miles on it. Unfortunately, I've had a few issues since my last update. Over the summer, the engine started losing coolant, but thankfully the dealer was able to replace the water pump and resolve the issue. However, after that, the A/C started acting up and wouldn't cool the car. It took three visits to the dealer to determine that the A/C compressor had gone bad. Although it was already fall by the time they figured it out, I'm hopeful that the issue has been resolved. Recently, I experienced a leak in the upper corner of the passenger side windshield during a rainy morning. The dealer informed me that this is a known issue with all 2017 and some 2018 Discoveries, and they are currently waiting for a new windshield to arrive. While I'm not happy with the situation, Land Rover's customer service has been offering me $35/day for a rental car and advising me to park the car in a garage to prevent further damage. Despite these issues, I'm happy to report that the car has been mechanically sound with no other issues to report. In fact, the infotainment system has been working well after 4 software updates in the past 12 months. I even got Apple Carplay installed on my 2017 Discovery during my last visit to the dealership. I have been the owner of my Discovery for four months now and have driven it for exactly 4200 miles. Although I had to wait four months for it to be delivered, I am happy with my purchase. However, I have had some issues with the AEB system. During testing, the system was only able to detect objects with a few feet between the car and the object, and in three out of ten tries, the system did not work at all. The audible warning is almost non-existent, which makes me hesitant to trust the AEB system in this car. Despite these issues, I feel better now compared to the first few months of ownership. I have had some trouble with the dealership support, which has been poor, at least for my local dealership. The same goes for Land Rover's customer service, which does not have much power over the dealer. If you run into an issue with your local dealer, it can be difficult to get any help from Land Rover. I tried to leave a similar post on Land Rover's own website, but they blocked my review twice. However, I am happy to share my experience here. Although the support from Land Rover or the dealership has been non-existent, I still love my car. The TouchPro (infotainment center) has been giving me some issues, and the car has been sitting at the dealership for the past 10 days. However, I am confident that the issues will be resolved soon. Despite the slow boot ups (up to two minutes), entire system locking up, USB ports not connecting or rejecting an iPhone after 30 seconds, poor quality Bluetooth music streaming, connectivity issues, cameras locking up and not being available, front parking sensors only working when you put on reverse, navigation locking up, and not being able to receive text messages on the infotainment system, I am still happy with my purchase. On the 7th day of ownership, a screw fell off the driver's side door, which holds the door latch in place. To my surprise, the other three doors had the same issue. Unfortunately, the AEB (autonomous emergency braking) system did not work as expected. I tried setting up a soft dummy and drove over it at about 10 miles per hour, but the system never kicked in. The dealer suggested that I continue driving and informed me that they don't have a way to physically test the system. Additionally, the Land Rover app is the only way to remotely start the car, but it can be challenging to get it to work due to network congestion or poor cell coverage. Lastly, the steering is quite loose, and it requires constant correction even on straight highway stretches. Overall, my ownership experience has been disappointing, and I am considering offloading the car once it is financially feasible.
