Land rover Discovery problems

The Land Rover Discovery is a series of seven-seater family SUVs, produced under the Land Rover marque, from the British manufacturer Land Rover, and later Jaguar Land Rover. The series is currently in its fifth iteration (or generation, according to the manufacturer), the first of which was introduced in 1989, making the Discovery the first new model series since the launch of the 1970 Range Rover – on which it was based – and only the third new product line since the conception of the Land Rover (vehicle and brand) by Rover in 1948. The model is sometimes called influential, as one of the first to market a true off-road capable family car.
Although the Range Rover had originally been designed as an everyday four wheel drive car that could be used as both a utility vehicle and a family car, it had progressively moved upmarket through its life to evolve into a luxury vehicle sold at a much higher price point. The Discovery was intended to fulfill the role the Range Rover originally was intended for; a segment which was now dominated by Japanese rivals such as the Nissan Patrol, Mitsubishi Pajero and Toyota Land Cruiser. Although positioned below the Range Rover in the company's line-up, the vehicle was both longer and higher, offered more room in the back, and optionally also more seats. Space utilization became more sophisticated in later iterations, but the series keeps offering seats for seven occupants. Despite originally being sold as an affordable alternative to the Range Rover, the Discovery has also progressively moved upmarket through its successive generations to become a bonafide luxury SUV.
The second Discovery (1998) was called the Series II, and though featuring an extended rear body, was otherwise an updated facelift, which carried on the 100 in (2,540 mm) wheelbase frame and rigid, live front and rear axles of the original Range Rover into 2004.
The third iteration – succeeding the series I and II in 2004 - was either titled the Discovery 3 or simply LR3 (in North America and the Middle East). This was the first all-original design for the Discovery. Although it followed the 2002 third generation Range Rover, also switching to fully independent suspension, it still received a separate, but integrated body and frame (IBF) structure. The fourth iteration, as of 2009 – like the series II, was again mainly an update of the new generation – marketed as the Discovery 4, or Land Rover LR4 for North American and Middle Eastern markets.
The fifth iteration of the Discovery, introduced in 2017, no longer sports a numeric suffix. Unlike the previous two generations, it now benefits from a unitized body structure, making it lighter than its predecessor.

Common Land rover Discovery problems
Based on the complaints from owners of Land Rover Discovery cars, here is a list of common problems associated with these vehicles:
- Electric Faults:
- One of the most reported issues involves electronic problems affecting the door central locking system and windows. These electrical faults can impact the overall operation of the vehicle and lead to inconvenience for the owners.
- Front Lower Control Arm Issues:
- Land Rover Discovery 4 drivers have reported that the front lower control arms may require replacement after around 50,000 miles due to wear and tear. This can affect the steering mechanism of the vehicle.
- Faulty Air Suspension:
- Air suspension is crucial for off-road vehicles like the Land Rover Discovery. After approximately 100,000 miles, leaks in the rubber components of the air suspension system can occur, leading to issues with the vehicle's suspension.
- Timing Chain Replacement:
- Despite manufacturer recommendations to change the oil every 15,000 miles, some owners have experienced damage to the timing chain by delaying oil changes. This highlights the importance of regular maintenance to prevent costly repairs.
- Water Pump Leaks:
- A common issue reported by Discovery owners is a leaky water pump. If not addressed promptly, a leak in the water pump can result in engine overheating, potentially causing severe damage to the vehicle.
- Multimedia Infotainment System Problems:
- Owners of the Discovery 5 have complained about issues with the multimedia infotainment system. Problems include slow response, freezing, and difficulties with pairing smartphones. Software updates are recommended to address these glitches.
- Malfunctioning Electric Handbrakes:
- Some Discovery owners have faced issues with electric handbrakes sticking on, which can be a safety concern. Additionally, problems with the Tow Assist system have been reported, impacting the functionality of the vehicle.
- Engine Failures:
- Certain models, like the 3.0 Sd6 V6 diesel, have experienced catastrophic engine failures. Reports of metal fragments found in the engine oil of the Sd4 diesel suggest potential issues with engine components.
- Air Suspension Pump Failures:
- Failures in the air suspension's airbags pumps can lead to the vehicle listing to one side, posing a safety risk while driving. This issue highlights the importance of regular inspections and maintenance of the air suspension system.
These common problems with Land Rover Discovery cars emphasize the importance of regular maintenance, prompt repairs, and thorough inspections to ensure the longevity and reliability of these vehicles.

Land rover Discovery 2019
- Date Of Incident: 2024-05-18
- Date Complaint: 2024-06-16
- VIN: SALRG2RVXK2
- Components: ENGINE
- Summary: On May 18, 2024 at approximately 4pm, my husband turned on my 2019 Land Rover Discovery from a cold start after sitting parked for about 20 minutes. We heard a slight rattle upon start-up, so he turned the car ignition off. He restarted the car after about a minute and we did not hear the rattle. We began driving the car and after about 2-3 miles, the car started shuddering and began slowing down but did not completely stall. My husband turned off the car again and we waited for a couple of minutes and he restarted the car. It drove fine for about a mile and began shuddering/hesitating again as we were driving. Then the car made a loud warning sound, a warning light flickered on the dash and the engine completely turned off as we were driving. We were in the middle of traffic and had we been on the freeway, there would have been catastrophic consequences as the engine completely stopped. We thankfully were able to coast to a side-street on our immediate right and stopped. The engine would not turn over and my husband was unable to restart the car. I immediately made an appointment with my local Land Rover dealership for 3 days later (next available) and had the truck towed there. After inspection, they told me they believed the main bearing in the engine failed due to an oil pump failure and that the engine would need to be replaced. My truck is 5 years old and has less than 100,000 miles (only about 80K). No previous warning lights! A car this expensive and with so few miles with regular maintenance service being performed by either Land Rover or AAA, shouldn’t need a new engine. This is after I’d had the camshaft adjuster/timing chain replaced in this truck by the same dealership only 3 months prior! After speaking to the service person, he informed me that 2 other Land Rovers were sitting in the dealership waiting for the SAME engine and waiting for 4-5 months to be delivered from the manufacturer with NO ETA! Known, dangerous problem! Please help resolve!

- VIN: SALRW4EU3P2
- Components: STEERING,LANE DEPARTURE
- Summary: Dear NHTSA, I am writing to report a safety issue with my 2023 Land Rover Discovery Metropolitan that occurred on April [XXX] 2024. VIN: [XXX] The issue involved the steering wheel locking unexpectedly. After parking the car overnight for 15 hours, I returned to find a message indicating lane departure assist wasn't working, and the steering wheel was completely locked and inoperable. I attempted various troubleshooting steps, including changing driving modes, restarting the car, and checking for software updates, but none resolved the problem. While the car functioned normally in terms of forward and backward movement, the locked steering wheel prevented any turning ability. There were also no warning lights or error messages displayed on the dashboard. The only solution I found was to perform a hard reset by disconnecting the negative battery cable for 3 minutes and then reconnecting it. It's concerning that a similar issue appears to be reported by other Land Rover owners online, particularly with Defender models. [XXX] My primary concern is the possibility of this malfunction occurring while driving, which could lead to a serious accident. There seems to be no guarantee that this isn't a potential risk. I will be in contact with the Land Rover dealership locally and urge NHTSA to investigate this potential safety concern with Land Rover vehicles. Thank you for your time and attention to this matter. Sincerely, [XXX] INFORMATION REDACTED PURSUANT TO THE FREEDOM OF INFORMATION ACT (FOIA), 5 U.S.C. 552(B)(6)

- Summary: The vehicle leaks water from the top, middle and top right (passenger) of the windshield. Whenever it's raining water drips down the inside of the windshield and falls on the dash. in the mornings, after heavy rains, water can be found on the drivers and passengers seat, as well as in the cupholders this waterfalls all over the central electronic system and navigation, and seems only a matter of time before these systems will fail as well. When reporting it to the dealer, the dealer mentioned that this has been a common problem for this generation discovery, however, are not willing to replace the windshield under warranty.

- Summary: At the end of 2022 and early last year, I had multiple issues with the roof of my 2018 Land Rover Discovery coming apart/detached from the roof. On [XXX] a piece of my roof came off again that had already been replaced in 2023. There are four separate roof pieces and this is the fourth time one has separated from the vehicle (I believe three of the pieces at this point have detached). Two times, the roof pieces came off while I was driving on the highway, this could have seriously injured someone, luckily neither time hit a car or pedestrian. Land Rover will not accept that this is an issue with the build/body of the vehicle. I found a Land Rover forum where many people are having these same issues: [XXX] I am concerned that this will happen on the highway, cause an accident, and owner's will be held liable. I have attached multiple pictures I have taken reflecting this issue over the last year and a half, I tried to add more but I am receiving an error message. - Summary: To whom it may concern, I am writing to file a complaint about a serious defect in my Land Rover Discovery vehicle. The defect is a roof leakage near the windshield where it attaches to the body. This causes water to seep into the interior of the car and damage the electrical components. The service technician at the dealership informed me that they need to break the windshield in order to fix the leak and then replace the windshield. The estimate for this repair was around $3,500, which is unacceptable for a relatively new vehicle. I bought this pre-inspected vehicle in mid-2022 from the Land Rover dealership. I have learned from online sources that this is a common problem with many Land Rover vehicles, and that it poses a safety hazard as well as a financial burden for the owners. I request that you investigate this issue and issue a recall for all affected vehicles. I also request that you reimburse me for the cost of the repair or provide me with a replacement vehicle. I appreciate your attention to this matter and hope to hear from you soon. I've really enjoyed having this SUV! It's a great vehicle in my eyes. I understand that some people may have complaints about the service, but I believe that basic maintenance and upkeep can eliminate these problems. As for the gas mileage, it's important to remember that this is a V8 engine. Thank you for considering my opinion!

Vehicle year: 1998
As I was researching this SUV, I noticed that some people had negative things to say about it. However, I would like to clear up some misconceptions. Firstly, regarding the gas mileage, it's important to keep in mind that it's a large off-road V8, not a Honda. I personally view my Discovery as a tank with leather and sunroofs. Secondly, I've heard complaints about the windows and sunroofs either not rolling up or leaking. While this can be frustrating, it's important to remember that there are many things that can go wrong with any car. In my experience, the window issue was a minor detail. When my rear windows wouldn't roll down, I simply fitted it with a window relay that cost $35.00. Other than that, I've only done basic maintenance. Let me know if you have any questions or concerns!

Great Car!! Most misunderstood car out there. If you're not into having maintenance done then buy one of those look alike disposable cars, do not buy a Landrover. Excellent on-road or off. In 115k miles I certainly have not had any of the nightmarish leaks and electrical problems that I'm reading about, but then, I've owned it since new and maintain it, with much affection I might add. I've never ceased to be amazed with the quality of the switch gear etc. which we have BMW to thank for. The car is as solid as a rock! Stangely enough, for such a tall ride, it also handles rather nicely too. I love my Landy!

I'm thrilled to share that this is my second Land Rover, and I absolutely adore it! The build quality is simply amazing, even when compared to Lexus. The only issue I had was a squeaky seat, but the dealer was quick to repair it. The navigation system is fantastic, and the air ride is top-notch. I must respectfully disagree with Edmund's snob appeal opinion. When compared to the H2/Tahoe/Denali, the Discovery is a better buy with superior resale value and by far better dealer service. Speaking of which, the dealer provides a free loaner and free pickup/delivery for service, even if you're over 90 miles away! How awesome is that? The mileage is on par with the Tahoe I've driven and far better than the Escalade I drove. I would definitely buy another one, but I doubt if this one will wear out anytime soon.

The car is beautiful and has a gorgeous burnt orange color. The inside still smells new. It has great pickup when accelerating through traffic. So far, I love it!

I recently traded my 2021 Atlas for a 2018 Discovery hse after being impressed by my client's new Discovery. I was particularly drawn to the leather, the numerous compartments, and the tailgate guard that raises and lowers. Unfortunately, I experienced some issues with water leakage shortly after purchasing the vehicle. Despite calling Tom Wood Landrover three times, I was unable to speak to a live person and the issue remained unresolved. The mildew smell that followed was quite unpleasant. However, I am grateful that Carmax has offered me a full refund. It's disappointing that a luxury SUV that ticks all the high-end boxes falls short on such basic features. I do regret not keeping my Atlas, but I'm hopeful that I'll find a better fit in the future.

In January 2020, I had a change of heart regarding Land Rover's failure to honor my vehicle warranty in a reasonable timeframe. My 2018 Discovery HSE LUX experienced a failed front windshield seal, which allowed significant rainwater intrusion into the cabin. This caused damage to the headliner, center console, and passenger side floorboard. Despite repeated trips to the dealer, the Vox Navigation software deficiency and other stated warranty issues remain unresolved. However, LR USA acknowledged and corrected all concerns in Spring 2020 and has most recently issued a windshield recall to correct systemic windshield/sealant issues. Despite these issues, I still love my 2018 LR Discovery, which remains a comfortable, versatile, and mechanically reliable ride. I have recently submitted a Lemon complaint to LR USA Customer Relations, and I am awaiting their review and feedback. For the record, the Voice Navigation system has never worked and is the absolute worst of any vehicle I have ever owned. On a positive note, my wife and I enjoyed an enjoyable and informative morning driving through the snow-covered trails during a Land Rover off-road excursion at the Biltmore Estate the winter prior to making the purchase. It's worth the time if you're new to the LR Brand. When we were ready to move into a new SUV, the LR dealer allowed us to test drive our new Discovery over a long weekend before making the decision to buy. The beautiful design and color combo caught our eye right off the showroom floor. We fell in love! It has been a great road trip and weekend getaway SUV - fun to drive, comfortable, and roomy. The HUD is very cool and it handles well, while being quiet on the road. It has plenty of power and a surprisingly smooth transmission. It is functional and has accommodated 7 adults, carried my bikes, and towed my 6500 lb boat all with equal ease. Take time to learn the infotainment system - you won't be disappointed. Overall, we are very pleased with our purchase!

If you want a Rover, I recommend leasing it. While I loved my Rover, after 65000 miles, I experienced a series of issues such as the rear windows, sunroof, fuel injection, starter, speakers, and oxygen sensors failing on a monthly basis. However, leasing a Rover can be a great option for those who desire one.

I've had this car for 2 years and 4 months and it currently has 35K miles on it. Unfortunately, I've had a few issues since my last update. Over the summer, the engine started losing coolant, but thankfully the dealer was able to replace the water pump and resolve the issue. However, after that, the A/C started acting up and wouldn't cool the car. It took three visits to the dealer to determine that the A/C compressor had gone bad. Although it was already fall by the time they figured it out, I'm hopeful that the issue has been resolved. Recently, I experienced a leak in the upper corner of the passenger side windshield during a rainy morning. The dealer informed me that this is a known issue with all 2017 and some 2018 Discoveries, and they are currently waiting for a new windshield to arrive. While I'm not happy with the situation, Land Rover's customer service has been offering me $35/day for a rental car and advising me to park the car in a garage to prevent further damage. Despite these issues, I'm happy to report that the car has been mechanically sound with no other issues to report. In fact, the infotainment system has been working well after 4 software updates in the past 12 months. I even got Apple Carplay installed on my 2017 Discovery during my last visit to the dealership. undefinedOn the 7th day of ownership, a screw fell off the driver's side door, which holds the door latch in place. To my surprise, the other three doors had the same issue. Unfortunately, the AEB (autonomous emergency braking) system did not work as expected. I tried setting up a soft dummy and drove over it at about 10 miles per hour, but the system never kicked in. The dealer suggested that I continue driving and informed me that they don't have a way to physically test the system. Additionally, the Land Rover app is the only way to remotely start the car, but it can be challenging to get it to work due to network congestion or poor cell coverage. Lastly, the steering is quite loose, and it requires constant correction even on straight highway stretches. Overall, my ownership experience has been disappointing, and I am considering offloading the car once it is financially feasible.

The car can be a bit finicky and unpredictable at times, but it's still a treat to drive. Unfortunately, the gas mileage isn't great, especially with the current gas prices. It costs me almost $50 to fill up the tank. Since I bought my LR two years ago, I've had some issues, such as water leaks into the cabin, the power seat working intermittently, and the muffler rattling (which the dealer replaced under warranty). The CHECK ENGINE LIGHT also goes off way too much, which requires a trip to the dealer to reset. The biggest challenge, however, is dealing with the dealership. They can be quite pushy about maintenance, and the costs of repairs are often exorbitant. For example, they wanted $600 just to change my spark plug wires! If you have some experience with light auto work, it's definitely worth doing the jobs yourself to save a few bucks!
