2000 Land rover Discovery problems
The Land Rover Discovery is a series of seven-seater family SUVs, produced under the Land Rover marque, from the British manufacturer Land Rover, and later Jaguar Land Rover. The series is currently in its fifth iteration (or generation, according to the manufacturer), the first of which was introduced in 1989, making the Discovery the first new model series since the launch of the 1970 Range Rover – on which it was based – and only the third new product line since the conception of the Land Rover (vehicle and brand) by Rover in 1948. The model is sometimes called influential, as one of the first to market a true off-road capable family car.
Although the Range Rover had originally been designed as an everyday four wheel drive car that could be used as both a utility vehicle and a family car, it had progressively moved upmarket through its life to evolve into a luxury vehicle sold at a much higher price point. The Discovery was intended to fulfill the role the Range Rover originally was intended for; a segment which was now dominated by Japanese rivals such as the Nissan Patrol, Mitsubishi Pajero and Toyota Land Cruiser. Although positioned below the Range Rover in the company's line-up, the vehicle was both longer and higher, offered more room in the back, and optionally also more seats. Space utilization became more sophisticated in later iterations, but the series keeps offering seats for seven occupants. Despite originally being sold as an affordable alternative to the Range Rover, the Discovery has also progressively moved upmarket through its successive generations to become a bonafide luxury SUV.
The second Discovery (1998) was called the Series II, and though featuring an extended rear body, was otherwise an updated facelift, which carried on the 100 in (2,540 mm) wheelbase frame and rigid, live front and rear axles of the original Range Rover into 2004.
The third iteration – succeeding the series I and II in 2004 - was either titled the Discovery 3 or simply LR3 (in North America and the Middle East). This was the first all-original design for the Discovery. Although it followed the 2002 third generation Range Rover, also switching to fully independent suspension, it still received a separate, but integrated body and frame (IBF) structure. The fourth iteration, as of 2009 – like the series II, was again mainly an update of the new generation – marketed as the Discovery 4, or Land Rover LR4 for North American and Middle Eastern markets.
The fifth iteration of the Discovery, introduced in 2017, no longer sports a numeric suffix. Unlike the previous two generations, it now benefits from a unitized body structure, making it lighter than its predecessor.

Common 2000 Land rover Discovery problems
Based on the complaints from owners of the Land Rover Discovery 2000, several common problems have been identified:
- Oil Pump Failure:
- Rover V8 engines are prone to oil pump failures, leading to symptoms like low oil pressure, especially at idle. Prompt replacement is crucial to prevent engine damage. In some cases, a casting problem in 2003 Discoveries caused low oil pressure, but this issue is mostly resolved in current models. If wear is detected on the front housing, it may need replacement, which can be challenging to find and costly.
- Camshaft Issues:
- Older Rover V8 engines can experience camshaft problems, including worn camshaft lobes affecting engine power. Replacement and higher-performance camshafts are options, but the labor-intensive process involves removing various components. In severe cases, cam bearings may need replacement, leading to a complete engine rebuild.
- Suspension, Transmission, and Electrics:
- While the engines in the Land Rover Discovery 2000 are generally reliable, common complaints revolve around issues with the suspension, transmission, and electrics. These components are responsible for over 60% of all claims, with the car scoring poorly in mechanical reliability and exterior build quality. The model has been subject to numerous recalls, covering areas like airbags, brakes, engine, and transmission, highlighting the need for thorough inspection before purchase.
These problems highlight the importance of thorough maintenance and inspection when considering the purchase of a Land Rover Discovery 2000, especially focusing on the engine components, suspension, transmission, and electrics to ensure a reliable ownership experience.

Is the Land Rover Discovery reliable?
The Discovery is notorious for being one of the least reliable models in Land Rover's lineup. As such, we can't recommend a model that is almost three decades old, even with good mileage and price. CarComplaints.com have listed 68 complaints and four recalls for the 1995 Discovery.
Are old Land Rovers reliable?
Very early Land Rovers, made during the 1960's through the 1980's, were pretty simple and reliable machines. They were rugged and were capable off-road vehicles on-par with many Jeeps and Toyota FJ40 Land Cruisers.

SEATS PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2002-07-27
- Fire: 1
- VIN: SALTY1548YA
- Components: SEATS
- Summary: MY VEHICLE WAS PARKED WITH THE ENGINE OFF AND THE IGNITION SET IN THE FULL "OFF" POSITION. MY WIFE AND I WERE IN THE VEHICLE PREPARING TO DEPART. THE CONTROL CONSOLE BETWEEN THE FRONT SEATS BEGAN TO EMIT SMOKE AND A BURNING SMELL IN THE PASSENGER COMPARTMENT. WITHIN 30 SECONDS, THE CONSOLE CAUGHT FIRE AND EMITTED A NOXIOUS CLOUD OF SMOKE IN THE PASSENGER COMPARTMENT. MY WIFE AND I EVACUATED THE VEHICLE, AND I OBTAINED A FIRE EXTINGUISHER FROM A NEARBY BUSINESS AND EXTINGUISHED THE FIRE. I SUSPECTED THAT AN ELECTRICAL SHORT CAUSED THE FIRE, AND I DISCONNECTED THE BATTERY. THE ENTIRE INCIDENT OCCURED WHILE THE ENGINE WAS OFF AND THE IGNITION SET IN THE FULL "OFF" POSITION. I BELIEVE THAT THE ELECTRICAL FIRE IN MY VEHICLE WAS CAUSED BY A MANUFACTURING DEFECT AND/OR DESIGN DEFECT. GIVEN THE SPEED AND THE LOCATION OF THE FIRE THAT IT CAUSED, THE MANUFACTURING AND/OR DESIGN DEFECT IN THIS VEHICLE PRESENTS A SUBSTANTIAL RISK OF DEATH OR SERIOUS HARM TO DRIVERS AND PASSENGERS. IN THE INTERESTS OF PUBLIC SAFETY, THIS PROBLEM SHOULD BE INVESTIGATED AND REDRESSED AS SOON AS POSSIBLE.*AK

TIRES PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2000-08-01
- VIN: SALTY1240YA
- Components: TIRES
- Summary: OEM GODYEAR WRANGLER TIRES STARTED DEMONSTRATING UNEVEN CUPPING THAT CAUSED NOISE AND HANDELING ISSUES. AFTER BRINGING THE ISSUE TO MY DEALER'S ATTENTION AT MY FIRST OIL CHANGE (7,500 MILES) THEY INFORMED ME THAT MANY ROVERS WITH THE SAME TIRES HAD DEMONSTRATED THE SAME ISSUES DURING THE PAST FEW MONTHS. THEY EXPLAINED TO ME THAT GOODYEAR AND ROVER WERE RESERACHING THE PROBLEM AND TO HANG TIGHT UNTIL A SOLUTION AND RECALL WERE ANNOUNCED. THE TIRES CONTINUED TO DEGRADE WITH THE HANDELING AND NOISE FACTORS BECOMING WORSE AND WORSE OVER THE NEXT YEAR. AT THE 15K OIL CHANGE I ASKED THE DEALER TO ROTATE THE TIRES HOPING THAT THE ISSUE WAS ONLY RELATED TO THE FRONT END. WIHTIN A COUPLE OF WEEKS THE NEW FRONT TIRES (WHICH WERE ORIGINALLY BACK TIRES) STARTED SHOWING THE SAME INSIDE AND OUTSIDE EDGE CUPPING. THE PREVIOUS FRONT TIRES ON THE BACK END CONTINUED TO GET WORSE. I BEGAN WORKING CLOSELY WITH MY DEALER TO ADDRESS THE ISSUE AND EVEN MET WITH THE REGIONAL ROVER SERICE MANAGER WHO ACKNOWLEDGED THE ISSUE WAS PREVIOUSLY KNOWN AND LIMITED TO WRANGLER TIRES ON ROVERS. SINCE MY ROVER HAD BEEN ALIGNED ON TWO SEPERATE JIGS THE DEALER SERVICE MANAGER ASSURED ME THAT MY VEHICLE WAS UP TO SPEC. THE REGIONAL REP AND LATER THE LAND ROVER NORTH AMERICA OFFICE REFUSED TO HELP ME NEGOTIATE WITH GOODYEAR TO OBTAIN MY MONEY BACK. THE PARTY LINE AT LAND ROVER WAS 'IT'S NOT A PROBLEM WITH OUR VEHICLE BUT INSTEAD AN ISSUE WITH THEIR TIRES. WE CAN'T GET INVOLVED WITH THIS DISPUTE SINCE WE DO NOT WARRANTY THE OEM TIRES'. AFTER MUCH FRUSTRATION I CONTACTED GOODYEAR AND MANAGED TO GET IN TOUCH WITH A VP OF CUSTOMER SATISFACTION. THE GOODYEAR VP FINALLY ADMITTED THAT A REPLACEMENT WRANGLER SPECIFIC TIRE WAS BEING RELEASED IN THE FUTURE AND HE PAID ME FULL RETAIL VALUE FOR MY GOODYEARS SINCE I DOCUMENTED THAT THE ISSUE BEGAN BEFORE 20% TREADLIFE HAD EXPIRED. I PURCHASED NEW MICHELIN CROSS COUNTRY'S (XPC REPLACEMENT TIRES) AND AT 4,000 MILES I DON'T SEE OR FEEL ANY TREAD LIFE ISSUES.*AK

- VIN: SALTY124XYA
- Components: STEERING,POWER TRAIN
- Summary: 2000 DISCOVERY II PURCHASED OFF THE SHOW ROOM FLOOR FROM MAIN LINE LAND ROVER IN HAVERFORD PA IN APRIL 00. JUNE 25, 2000 I WAS TRAVELING 60 MPH ON THE NJ TURNPIKE WHEN THE VEHICLE WENT OUT OF CONTROL , SHOOTING OFF TO THE RIGHT SIDEWAYS WITHOUT STEERING CONTROL. VEHICLE TURNED 180 DEGREES IN THE MIDDLE OF THE HIGHWAY AND WAS STOPPED BY THE STEEL GUARD RAIL. THE VEHICLE WAS, AT THAT POINT, FACING IN THE OPPOSITE DIRECTION OF THE TRAFFIC. THE VEHICLE WAS KEPT BY THE BODY SHOP AND THE DEALER (BOTH IN CHERRY HILL, NJ) FOR NEARLY 4 MONTHS. THE BODY SHOP COULD NOT GET THE VEHICLE TO DRIVE STRAIGHT. THE DEALER EVENTUALLY REPLACED THE STEERING BOX. AT THE NEXT SERVICING, MAIN LINE LAND ROVER REPLACED THE RECALLED PULLEY AND BELTS. I AHVE ALSO HAD CONTINUING PROBLEMS WITH THE TRANSMISSION. IT ALWAYS SEEMS TO DRAG. I HAVE RETURNED THE VEHICLE TO THE DEALER 3 TIMES FOR CONTINUED PROBLEMS WITH THE STEERING AND THE TRANSMISSION. THEY CONTINUALLY CLAIM THE VEHICLE IS OK.*AK
SERVICE BRAKES, HYDRAULIC PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2000-06-07
- VIN: SALTY1544YA
- Components: SERVICE BRAKES, HYDRAULIC
- Summary: THE BRAKES IN THIS VEHICLE DO NOT WORK PROPERLY. THEY REQUIRE EXCESSIVE PEDAL DEPRESSION BEFORE BRAKES ENGAGE AND BRAKE ACTION IS FINE IF BRAKE PEDAL IS PUMPED. THE DEALER HAS BEEN UNABLE TO FIX THIS PROBLEM, DESPITE HAVING REPLACED THE MASTER CYLINDER AND OTHER ATTEMPTED REPAIRS. I BELIEVE THIS IS A HAZARD, AS STOPPING DISTANCE IS PROLONGED BECAUSE OF THE PROBLEM. I'VE BEEN UNABLE TO FIND SOMEONE LOCALLY WHO CAN TEST THE BRAKING DISTANCE, BUT WOULD APPRECIATE ANY SUGGESTIONS YOU HAVE ABOUT HAVING THIS DONE.*AK
