1998 Land rover Discovery problems

The Land Rover Discovery is a series of seven-seater family SUVs, produced under the Land Rover marque, from the British manufacturer Land Rover, and later Jaguar Land Rover. The series is currently in its fifth iteration (or generation, according to the manufacturer), the first of which was introduced in 1989, making the Discovery the first new model series since the launch of the 1970 Range Rover – on which it was based – and only the third new product line since the conception of the Land Rover (vehicle and brand) by Rover in 1948. The model is sometimes called influential, as one of the first to market a true off-road capable family car.

Although the Range Rover had originally been designed as an everyday four wheel drive car that could be used as both a utility vehicle and a family car, it had progressively moved upmarket through its life to evolve into a luxury vehicle sold at a much higher price point. The Discovery was intended to fulfill the role the Range Rover originally was intended for; a segment which was now dominated by Japanese rivals such as the Nissan Patrol, Mitsubishi Pajero and Toyota Land Cruiser. Although positioned below the Range Rover in the company's line-up, the vehicle was both longer and higher, offered more room in the back, and optionally also more seats. Space utilization became more sophisticated in later iterations, but the series keeps offering seats for seven occupants. Despite originally being sold as an affordable alternative to the Range Rover, the Discovery has also progressively moved upmarket through its successive generations to become a bonafide luxury SUV.

The second Discovery (1998) was called the Series II, and though featuring an extended rear body, was otherwise an updated facelift, which carried on the 100 in (2,540 mm) wheelbase frame and rigid, live front and rear axles of the original Range Rover into 2004.

The third iteration – succeeding the series I and II in 2004 - was either titled the Discovery 3 or simply LR3 (in North America and the Middle East). This was the first all-original design for the Discovery. Although it followed the 2002 third generation Range Rover, also switching to fully independent suspension, it still received a separate, but integrated body and frame (IBF) structure. The fourth iteration, as of 2009 – like the series II, was again mainly an update of the new generation – marketed as the Discovery 4, or Land Rover LR4 for North American and Middle Eastern markets.

The fifth iteration of the Discovery, introduced in 2017, no longer sports a numeric suffix. Unlike the previous two generations, it now benefits from a unitized body structure, making it lighter than its predecessor.

Negative 1998 Land rover Discovery car reviews

  1. Ola Quitzon 2024-11-08

I absolutely love the styling and ruggedness of the Land Rover. It's the reason I purchased mine 3 years ago. While I haven't had any major issues with it, the check engine light seems to come on every other month or so, which can be quite frustrating when I have to take it to Land Rover. Additionally, I've noticed that these vehicles tend to depreciate more quickly than any other vehicle I've owned. If you're looking to buy one, I would recommend buying for life or be prepared to lose money.

  2. Judson Macejkovic 2024-10-17

I purchased this vehicle certified from a dealer with 32k miles and have had no problems with it. It does not leak anything and I change the oil every 3500 miles. I use the Disco to tow my 3800# boat 5 miles to the water and have never taken it off-road. I take the Disco to our mountain cabin in deep snow and have never been stuck. The paint is flawless and looks new, although the driver's leather seat is a little worn. It currently has 62k miles on it. A few years ago, I had the transmission, brake, and power steering fluids changed and I will soon have the differential and swivel grease changed as well. I would trust this vehicle anywhere, although it does use gas! I feel very safe on California freeways, although I would never consider ramming a slow driver in front of me!

  3. Josue Frami 2024-10-01

I have had a number of issues with my Rover since day one. However, I am pleased to say that I have recently acquired a Loaded 2003 Sequoia LTD for $45K! While the Rover had some problems, I am confident that the Sequoia will be a much better fit for me. I encountered issues with the plastic film over the gear selector, the cup holders, and numerous electrical problems, including non-functioning brake lights and turn signals. These nagging problems were unexpected for a luxury SUV. I had to have the cruise control fixed five times, and replacing the gear selector plastic every other month for $250 a pop and the cup holders for $180 was frustrating. Overall, I am excited to move on to a more reliable vehicle.

  4. Tracey Schimmel 2024-09-03

I purchased the vehicle with 23K miles 3 years ago and have since driven it for 90K miles. Despite the high mileage, I have not encountered any major issues, except for the electrical failures that seem to occur around 60K miles. The vehicle performs exceptionally well in snowy conditions and has a sturdy design. In fact, I was rear-ended by a Dodge Ram going 35-40 mph and the frame of my Rover remained intact, while their car was totaled. It is important to keep in mind that this is a truck and an import, and therefore may have different expectations compared to other vehicles. Overall, I have found this vehicle to be reliable and it has allowed me to comfortably navigate the harsh winters we experience in Buffalo.

  5. Jocelyn Schmeler 2024-08-02

Although I have mixed emotions about my rover, I am confident in my assessment of its performance. While I love the vehicle's handling and safety features, the expensive repairs have been a challenge since the warranty expired. Although the parts are costly, I am confident in my ability to make informed decisions about the vehicle's maintenance. While I will miss it when we get rid of it, I am confident that I can find a suitable replacement that meets my needs.

Positive 1998 Land rover Discovery car reviews

  1. Brandt Strosin 2024-11-19

This has been one of the best vehicles I have ever driven! While it may not be the fastest, there is simply no equal off-road. I bought this car with 80,000 miles on it, and since then I have put 10,000 miles on it without any problems. It's a real head-turner and I'm proud to say I have the best car in school!

  2. Adam Lemke 2024-11-05

It sounds like you've had some minor issues with the windows and seat buttons, but overall you seem to really enjoy driving your vehicle. It's impressive that you use it for plowing snow and towing, and it's great that you've made upgrades to the cooling system and transmission oil cooler to accommodate those tasks. With 172,358 miles on it, your vehicle is definitely a tank! Although it may not be the most fuel-efficient, it's clear that you love driving it both on and off road. Occasionally, you mention that it has trouble starting up, but it's great that you have a solution for that. Keep on enjoying your awesome vehicle!

  3. Paolo Kessler 2024-11-01

I really appreciate the way it drives, especially in wet weather. Our LSE is a British Racing Green, which I personally think is a fantastic colour that Land Rover should consider bringing back. We've only had to make a few minor repairs, which is to be expected with any car. I feel confident that I can go anywhere in any conditions.

  4. Fidel Schoen 2024-10-11

I have driven this vehicle in the snow, the mountains and the highway. The Land Rover Discovery is an exceptional SUV both on and off road. It handles well, both in poor weather and on sunny highways. However, I do think that Land Rover could improve the quality control, as the Discovery experiences leaks every so often.

  5. Mervin Padberg 2024-03-16

I have only had this vehicle for a short time, but I must say that the ride and quality are exceptional! The gas mileage is fair, about 16 mpg for a V8. Although the Disco is slightly underpowered, it has plenty of torque to handle pulling a substantial load. Overall, I would give it an 8.5.
