2010 Ford Explorer problems

ford logo

The Ford Explorer is a range of SUVs manufactured by Ford Motor Company since the 1991 model year. As the first four-door SUV produced by Ford, the Explorer was introduced as a replacement for the two-door Bronco II. Within the current Ford SUV range in North America, the Explorer is slotted between the Ford Edge and Ford Expedition. As with the Ford Ranger, the Explorer derives its name from a trim package previously offered on the Ford F-Series pickup trucks.

The Explorer has been offered in multiple chassis and powertrain layouts. The first two generations were directly derived from the Ford Ranger, switching to a model-specific chassis for the third and fourth generations. The fifth generation was repackaged as a crossover SUV, adopting a variant of the Ford Taurus chassis architecture.

Alongside the five-door Explorer wagon, a three-door Explorer wagon was offered from 1991 to 2003, officially referred to as the Explorer Sport after 1999, serving as the direct replacement of the Bronco II; the 2001–2010 Ford Explorer Sport Trac was a crew-cab pickup derived from the model line. For police use, the Ford Police Interceptor Utility has been derived from the fifth and sixth-generation Explorer to replace the Ford Crown Victoria Police Interceptor (and the later Taurus-based Police Interceptor Sedan). Through rebranding, Mazda, Mercury, and Lincoln have sold versions of the Explorer; Lincoln currently markets the sixth-generation model line as the Lincoln Aviator.

For the North American market, the first four generations of the Explorer were produced by Ford at its Louisville Assembly Plant (Louisville, Kentucky) and at its now-closed St. Louis Assembly Plant (Hazelwood, Missouri); the model line is currently produced at Chicago Assembly Plant (Chicago, Illinois).

In 2020, CNBC reported the Ford Explorer range as the best-selling SUV of all time in America.

Common 2010 Ford Explorer problems

The 2010 Ford Explorer has several common problems that owners have reported. One of the most significant issues is transmission problems, which can cause lunging, jolting, and unstable shifts. These transmission issues can arise due to the transmission cam slamming into gear, leading to the car jerking or accelerating too quickly. Some owners have also reported their cars jumping gears without warning.

Another common problem with the 2010 Ford Explorer is heating issues. The heater can get stuck on the hottest setting due to a broken heater blend door or actuator. This problem can cause the car's interior to become too hot for the driver's comfort. If the heater blend door or actuator has issues, the car owner might hear a clicking sound from the actuator motor. Repairing this issue can cost between $564 and $927, including both labor and parts.

The 2010 Ford Explorer can also experience rough idle and stalling, which can be caused by leaking intake manifold O-ring gaskets or a bad engine computer. If there is a vacuum leak due to leaking O-ring gaskets, air can get into the engine and fuel system, making the system unable to compensate for the high amount of air getting into the engine. This issue can cause misfiring and loss of power.

Other common problems with the 2010 Ford Explorer include a bad rear wiper motor, axle seal leaks, noisy wheel bearings, bad blend door actuators, and some electrical issues.

In summary, the 2010 Ford Explorer has several common problems, including transmission issues, heating problems, rough idle and stalling, and other mechanical and electrical issues. If you are considering purchasing a used 2010 Ford Explorer, it is essential to be aware of these potential problems and have them inspected and addressed by a qualified mechanic before making a purchase.

  • Summary: The air bag light will not go off. I have checked the the wiring, cleared the area, and checked all fuses. All checked out okay. I'm a new buyer and can't register the car until it passes inspection. My only conclusion is that it possibly has a defect or has been previously been deployed. There is no record of a previous collision as of yet, although that may not be factual as the car has had a drivers door panel replaced. Can you help with the air bag information? Also, Is there a financial aid grant or some help in obtaining/repairing the problem for low or no income families? Thank you for your time in this matter. Sincerely, Kelly F. [email protected]

POWER TRAIN,ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,ENGINE PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2021-03-08
  • VIN: 1FMEU6DE2AU
  • Components: POWER TRAIN,ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,ENGINE
  • Summary: While driving on the highway, my Explorer did a sudden jolt and I had no control over the vehicle. It acted as though it was no in gear. I almost crashed going 60 mph on a 4 lane highway. It then did another large jolt and revved high into the red line. I took it to Firestone and they recommended that I take it to the dealership to check the transmission. I called the dealership and they advised me to drive it over. They told me it was "probably the transmission as Explorers are notarious for transmission issues." The dealership inspected the Explorer and confirmed that it was a known transmission issue involving codes P0798 and P098. The dealership advised that there were MULTIPLE pressure code errors [that never did a warning] and that the transmission required replacement. I asked if it was covered under warranty and the dealership advised me that Ford had no issued a recall yet, even though it was a known and serious transmission issue. The dealership recommended that I call Ford Customer Care at 1-800-392-3673 and request that Ford cover the replacement. I called Ford Customer Care and spoke with Bruno who advised me that it was indeed a known issue and that I "was not the only one with this issue" and that "there will be a recall soon so [I] can get reimbursed." Bruno was to have a supervisor call me within 24 hours. It has been almost 2 weeks and there has been no response from Ford. This is a well known issue that Ford knows of. There has been recalls of other Explorers for the same problem but my VIN is not included for some reason. If you go online, there are thousands of complaints. SOMETHING NEEDS TO BE DONE BEFORE SOMEONE DIES OR IS SERIOUSLY INJURED. I have the telephone recordings of Ford but I am unable to upload them here.
