2005 Pontiac G6 problems

pontiac logo

The Pontiac G6 is a mid-size car that was produced by General Motors under the Pontiac brand. It was introduced in 2004 for the 2005 model year to replace the Grand Am.

The G6 shared the GM Epsilon platform with the Chevrolet Malibu, Saab 9-3 and other General Motors vehicles. Features included a remote starting system (standard on GT, optional on base model), traction control/ABS, electronic stability control, automatic headlights as well as a panoramic sunroof option. A retractable hardtop convertible was offered for model years 2006-2009. Production ended in 2010 with the discontinuation of the Pontiac line.

With the G6, Pontiac introduced a two-digit naming convention, with the Pontiac G8 a class above the G6 and the Pontiac G5 a class below. In the case of the G6, the nameplate designated it as the sixth generation of its predecessor, the Pontiac Grand Am.

STEERING,ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,SERVICE BRAKES PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2023-10-01
  • VIN: 1G2ZG528154
  • Components: STEERING,ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,SERVICE BRAKES
  • Summary: A few months ago, I was pulling out of a parking lot and started to brake , but my car was not stopping. I quickly pumped my brakes and then my brakes worked. All my brake lights came on; ABS, BRAKE, TC, Check engine; and car maintenance light all came on. They periodically would go away but would return when it rained, or if the brakes gave out. Brakes have gone out twice, once while driving on freeway. Before this issue, I had taken it to a mechanic as the brake light was on, and the ‘brake fluid’ message was on my dash- the mechanic scanned it and said the BCM was malfunctioning, to take it to the dealership. I knew who bought the car originally off the lot, so I knew the specific dealership it was bought from (gmc dealership). When I called and told them the issue, they said they will not touch my car (exact words). It’s no longer under warranty and that they would not work on the car regardless. I took it to the main GMC dealership in my city, where they said it would cost thousands to diagnose and fix the car properly, even though I told them I knew what the issue was and what part needed replacing. They confirmed my cars issue was what I said it was, but said it would be VERY expensive to replace and fix, so I decided not to repair it (as the price was not what they originally told me). Now that the brakes fail periodically, I started looking around and saw others had similar issues.

STEERING PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2022-06-01
  • VIN: 1G2ZG528454
  • Components: STEERING
  • Summary: I have a 2005 Pontiac G6 that we purchased for our daughter about 4 or 5 years ago. The car has been a great first car and an emergency spare for our family, until recently. I was driving in Oklahoma City in 5 pm rush hour and without any type of warning I had zero and I mean zero power steering, I could not get the car off the highway at all, the steering wheel started shaking rapidly, and jearking from left to right. And as quick as it happened it stopped, I was able to pull over and call my husband back home 5 hours away to come get me and the car. Once I was pulled off the highway, I turned the car off and let it set for about 5 minutes then strated it back up, to witch the steering wheel went back to jerking and shaking, I thought well I have to get this thing off the major interstate worse case it goes crazy and I go down the ditch. I put it in drive and the steering wheel stopped shaking and jerking. I was able to get to a parking lot that was safe to wait the 6 hours for my husband and son to get there. When we got it back home, I had been doing research on this issue and discovered this NHTSA Recall 102442, butt for some reason my Vin number is not included in this recall. So I opted to replace. Number 41 in the fuse box under the hood. At first it seemed to help. So we allowed our son to drive the G6 to a friend's house about 5 miles away, he was on his way home and called saying come get me and the G6, it done it's steering wheel craziness again and I had an accident. With no clue how bad it was we went racing to him. Thankfully our sone was not hurt nor was there any damage to the vehicle. We hauled the car home and it sat for about 6 months. When we found our family needing to have it running. We pulled it out put a new battery in it, changed all the fluids and filters. Car yet again ran like it was new. Then we hit a pot hot in the road at about 4 miles an hour and boom there goes the steering wheel and it's craziness again. Please Help Us

STEERING PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2022-05-08
  • VIN: 1G2ZH528X54
  • Components: STEERING
  • Summary: I was driving with my kids from Ohio to wv. Halfway there my steering got super stiff and it was very hard to turn the wheel. Then a light on dashboard of a car with wrench in it came on then the car made ding noise and across radio message center said power steering. I read there was a recall in 2014 for my year make and model of car a 2005 Pontiac G6 but since it's been so long I can't check to see if my vehicle was ever fixed or not. If it was fixed and now has failed again what do I do. When I check Vin it says 0 unfixed I think. I'm at a loss. We could have caused an accident or wrecked ourselves because it just suddenly went out and it took everything I had in me to turn the steering wheel and to get off the road.

STEERING PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2022-05-08
  • VIN: 1G2ZH528X54
  • Components: STEERING
  • Summary: On 5-8-22, I, along with my 3 children, were driving from Ohio to west Virginia to visit my mother for mother's day. We were about 5 minutes away from getting on the highway where speed limit would've been 70 mph and multiple vehicles. The road we were on the speed limit was 55 mph but I was coming up to a sharp left turn so I was slowed down to about 35 mph. Before I started to go into the sharp left turn, my steering wheel became very hard to turn and I was like what the heck just happened. As I said that out loud a car symbol with a wrench inside of it popped up on my dash and directly after that light came on there was a ding (like when your trunk is open and you try to drive) and my radio message center said power steering. Luckily I was slowed down to 35 mph for the turn and through all my strength I was able to go through the turn and make it into a little parking lot and also luckily traffic wasn't bad on this road at this time. Had I have been going regular speed limit or had I have been on highway when this happened the results could've been worse. Had I not have had experience driving a vehicle with no power steering ( we own a 75 Chevy Nova I've driven quite a bit and of course there's no power steering in it. Also there's big difference in the nova and when this just happened in my G6. The G6 was way more difficult to steer than our old Nova) if I wouldn't have some experience in that and also been going faster than what I was, I don't think I would've been able to make the turn and would've crashed into a hillside. If I'd have made it to the highway when it happened it could have been a very bad car accident involving more than just my vehicle. I seen a while back there was a recall for this same problem on 2005 Pontiac G6 but when I type in vin number it says 0 unfinished recalls or something like that. Well obviously there's a problem with it and I feel it should be taken care of considering years back there was a recall

ENGINE AND ENGINE COOLING PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2021-11-21
  • VIN: 1G2ZG528854
  • Components: ENGINE AND ENGINE COOLING
  • Summary: The contact owns a 2005 Pontiac G6. The contact stated while driving at 70-75 MPH, the vehicle started misfiring. The check engine warning light illuminated. The contact continued to drive. The vehicle was taken to an independent mechanic to be diagnosed and repaired; however, the failure reoccurred while driving. The vehicle was taken back to the independent mechanic and the failure was associated with the emissions and cooling system. The contact stated that the vehicle was repaired; however, the check engine warning light illuminated two days later. The contact stated that the failure had been reoccurring while driving. The dealer and the manufacturer were not notified of the failure. The vehicle was not repaired. The failure mileage was approximately 174,000.

STEERING,UNKNOWN OR OTHER PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2022-03-13
  • VIN: 1G2ZG528954
  • Components: STEERING,UNKNOWN OR OTHER
  • Summary: The problem hasn't been happening nearly as much in the cold temperatures. I'm experiencing the same issue that was supposed to be recalled. The power steering goes out while I'm driving. I can pull over, restart it and it usually goes away the first start (sometimes more "restarts" are necessary). The steering wheel also twitches or shakes while the car is just idle. I don't move it... just moves while in park. There was a recall for my car for this issue (power steering torque sensor I believe?) and I'm curious why my car is experiencing it now.

A FEW MILES LATER DOWN THE ROAD I COULD BARELY MOVE MY STEERING WHEEL AT ALL AND THEN THE MESSAGE POWER STEERING POPPED UP ON MY INFORMATION CENTER AS MY STEERING WHEEL LOCKED UP AS I ATTEMPTED TO MAKE A TURN. UNFORTUNATELY I HAD TO GO OVER A CURB AND INTO A PARKING LOT BECAUSE OF THE MISHAP. I TURNED THE CAR OFF AND BACK ON AND MY STEERING WAS OKAY FOR A WHILE BUT THEN IT WOULD LOCK UP LATER AGAIN. I DID THIS PROCESS TWICE PAYING ATTENTION TO STEERING TO MAKE IT HOME SINCE I WAS ONLY A MILE AND A HALF AWAY.

STEERING PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2020-05-21
  • VIN: 1G2ZG528554
  • Components: STEERING
  • Summary: MY 2005 PONTIAC G6 POWER STEERING DANGEROUSLY STOPS WORKING WHILE DRIVING THE CAR, IT DOES SO AT RANDOM AND WITHOUT NOTICE. I WAS WITH MY HUSBAND, DRIVING ON I-5 AT HIGH SPEEDS, WHEN THE POWER STEERING IMMEDIATELY GOES OFF, WE ALMOST DIED IN THAT HIGHWAY AS I WAS NOT ABLE TO PROPERLY USE THE WHEEL DUE TO THE HIGH ENERGY IT REQUIRES TO TURN. AFTER THE INCIDENT I URGENTLY CALLED PONTIAC RIGHT WHEN I SAFELY PULLED OVER SOMEWHERE, AND EXPLAINED WHAT JUST HAPPENED. BUT THEY TOLD ME THERE WERE NO RECALLS ON THIS, AND I COULD NOT BELIEVE IT. GM TOLD ME TO GO TO THE CLOSEST DEALERSHIP TO HAVE IT REPAIRED AT MY OWN COST. I CALLED THE DEALERSHIP THEY REFERRED ME TO (IN ALBANY, OR) BUT THEY TOLD ME THEY WERE NOT A PONTIAC DEALERSHIP AND THEY MADE ME WAIT ON THE PHONE ONLY TO HANG UP ON ME AFTER 15 MINUTES. TO GIVE MORE DETAIL ON HOW THIS ISSUE HAPPENS, WHILE I DRIVE THE CAR AT SOME POINT THE POWER GOES OFF, THE SIGNAL TURNS ON AND I HEAR 3 SOUNDS SIMILAR TO THE ONES THE CAR DOES WHEN A SEAT BELT IS NOT PROPERLY PLUGGED IN. IT DOES THIS AT RANDOM, AND IN THE MOST DANGEROUS MOMENTS, SUCH AS WHILE NEEDING TO TURN, OR WHILE DRIVING FAST ON A HIGHWAY. STILL TO THIS DAY I HAVE NOT BEEN ABLE TO GET MY CAR FIXED, OR EVEN LOOKED AT BY A GM DEALERSHIP SINCE I CANNOT DRIVE THE CAR AT ALL WITHOUT RISKING MY LIFE. I JUST FOUND OUT ABOUT NHTSA AND I STRONGLY URGE YOU TO PUT AN IMMEDIATE RECALL ON THIS LIFE THREATENING TRANSPORTATION VEHICLE. I AM CONSIDERING PRESSING CHARGES IF MY LAWYER DEEMS IT TO BE THE BEST NEXT STEP FOR MY CASE. BUT PLEASE, IN ORDER TO PROTECT AMERICANS THAT OWN MY SAME CAR NEED TO BE ALERTED IMMEDIATELY, THEIR CARS NEED TO BE RECALLED AND PROPERLY FIXED BY THE AUTOMAKER. PLEASE TAKE THIS INTO SERIOUS CONSIDERATION AS LIVES WILL BE LOST IF NO ONE DOES ANYTHING. I WOULD BE HAPPY TO PROVIDE YOU WITH ALL DETAILS YOU NEED. THANK YOU VERY MUCH FOR YOUR WORK. -[XXX] INFORMATION REDACTED PURSUANT TO THE FREEDOM OF INFORMATION ACT (FOIA), 5 U.S.C. 552(B)(6). *CC *TR

2005 Pontiac G6 recalls

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) has issued 6 recalls for different components of the 2005 Pontiac G6.

2014-07-21
  • Manufacturer: Dorman Products, Inc.
  • Components: STEERING
  • Summary: Dorman Products, Inc. (Dorman) is recalling certain replacement intermediate steering shafts sold under the Dorman, OE Solutions, and Solutions brand names, part numbers 425-167, 2425167, and 7-3074, for installation on 2004-2012 Chevrolet Malibu, 2005-2010 Pontiac G6, and 2007-2009 Saturn Aura vehicles. The affected steering shafts may have a yoke that inadequately supports the u-joint bearing resulting in a premature failure.
  • Consequence: A joint bearing that fails prematurely may cause separation of the u-joint resulting in a complete loss of steering control, increasing the risk of a crash.
  • Remedy: Dorman will notify owners, and dealers will refund the purchase price or replace the steering shafts, free of charge. The recall began in September 2014. Owners may contact Dorman customer service at 1-800-523-2492.

  • Manufacturer: General Motors LLC
  • Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM:WIRING
  • Summary: General Motors LLC (GM) is recalling certain model year 2004-2012 Chevrolet Malibu vehicles manufactured May 16, 2003, through October 11, 2012, 2004-2007 Malibu Maxx vehicles manufactured June 25, 2003, through April 5, 2007, 2005-2010 Pontiac G6 vehicles manufactured May 26, 2004, through January 4, 2010, and 2007-2010 Saturn Aura vehicles manufactured April 24, 2006, through May 26, 2009. In the affected vehicles, increased resistance in the Body Control Module (BCM) connection may result in voltage fluctuations in the Brake Apply Sensor (BAS) circuit. These fluctuations can cause one or more of these conditions: the brake lights to illuminate without the brake pedal being pushed; the brake lights to not illuminate when the pedal is pushed; difficulty disengaging the cruise control; moving the gear shifter out of the 'PARK' position without pushing the brake; and disablement of crash avoidance features such as traction control, electronic stability control, and panic braking assist features.
  • Consequence: Any of the above failure conditions increases the risk of a crash.
  • Remedy: GM will notify owners, and dealers will attach the wiring harness to the BCM with a spacer, apply dielectric lubricant to both the BCM and harness connector and the BAS and harness connector, and will relearn the brake pedal home position, free of charge. The manufacturer distributed an Interim letter to customers on July 14, 2014. The recall began on August 18, 2014. Owners may contact General Motors customer service at 1-800-222-1020 (Chevrolet), 1-800-762-2737 (Pontiac), 1-800-553-6000 (Saturn). GM's number for this recall is 13036.

  • Components: POWER TRAIN:AUTOMATIC TRANSMISSION
  • Summary: General Motors LLC (GM) notified the agency on April 29, 2014, that they are recalling 56,214 model year 2007 and 2008 Saturn Aura vehicles. On May 22, 2014, GM increased the recall to include an additional 1,074,899 model year 2004-2008 Chevrolet Malibu vehicles manufactured from May 16, 2003, through October 5, 2007, model year 2004-2007 Malibu Maxx vehicles manufactured from June 25, 2003, through April 5, 2007, and model year 2005-2008 Pontiac G6 vehicles manufactured from May 26, 2004, through September 28, 2007, and equipped with 4-speed transmissions. The total number vehicles being recalled is now 1,131,113.
  • Consequence: If the transmission shift cable fractures while the vehicle is being driven, the transmission gear selection may not match the indicated gear and the vehicle may move in an unintended or unexpected direction, increasing the risk of a crash. Furthermore, when the driver goes to stop and park the vehicle, despite selecting the ‘PARK’ position, the transmission may not be in ‘PARK.’ If the vehicle is not in the "PARK" position there is a risk the vehicle will roll away as the driver and other occupants exit the vehicle or anytime thereafter. A vehicle rollaway increases the risk of injury to exiting occupants and bystanders.
  • Remedy: GM will notify owners, and GM dealers will replace the shift cable assembly and mounting bracket, free of charge. The manufacturer has not yet provided a notification schedule. Owners may contact General Motors at 1-800-553-6000. GM's number for this recall is 14152.

  • Manufacturer: General Motors LLC
  • Components: STEERING:ELECTRIC POWER ASSIST SYSTEM
  • Summary: General Motors LLC (GM) is recalling certain model year 2004-2006 and 2008-2009 Chevrolet Malibu, 2004-2006 Malibu Maxx, 2009-2010 HHR (non-turbo), 2010 Cobalt, 2008-2009 Saturn Aura and 2004-2007 Ion, and 2005-2009 Pontiac G6. In the affected vehicles, there may be a sudden loss of electric power steering (EPS) assist that could occur at any time while driving.
  • Consequence: If power steering assist is lost, greater driver effort would be required to steer the vehicle at low speeds, increasing the risk of a crash.
  • Remedy: GM will notify owners, and dealers will perform one of four bulletins. Parts are not currently available. GM expects to send an interim notification around May 28, 2014. When parts are available, owners will be mailed a second letter to come in to have the applicable bulletin applied. Bulletin 14115 covers model year 2004-2007 Saturn Ion, 2009-2010 Chevrolet HHR and 2010 Chevrolet Cobalts. Dealers will replace the EPS motor. Bulletin 14116 covers model year 2004-2006 Chevrolet Malibu and Malibu Maxx, 2005-2006 Pontiac G6 and 2008-2009 Chevrolet Malibu, Pontiac G6 and Saturn Aura built from March 1, 2008, through June 27, 2008. Dealers will replace the torque sensor assembly. Bulletin 14117 covers model year 2008 Chevrolet Malibu, Pontiac G6 and Saturn Aura built from February 1, 2008, through February 28, 2008. Dealers will replace the torque sensor assembly and EPS motor controller unit. Bulletin 14118 covers model year 2008 Chevrolet Malibu, Pontiac G6 and Saturn Aura built from October 1, 2007, through January 31, 2008. Dealers will replace the EPS motor controller unit. The recall began on July 17, 2014. Owners may contact Chevrolet at 1-800-630-2438, Saturn at 1-800-553-6000, and Pontiac at 1-800-620-7668. GM's number for this recall is N140115. Note: GM bulletin number 14119 will be implemented for model year 2006-2008 and early production of 2009 Chevrolet HHR (non-turbo) and model year 2003 Saturn ION to provide EPS Motor replacement for the life of the vehicle.

Negative 2005 Pontiac G6 car reviews

I bought this car in October '21 with 180K miles. Solid driving car on both highway and city drives. I have had to replace some wheel bearings on the front driver wheel, replace the electric window motor on the driver side, and replace the water pump (Autozone is a godsend for parts, and I got lucky to find a solid and fair mechanic). Sadly as of 6/2022, the EVAP issues and the transmission issues got to be too much and the car stalled out multiple times, even after a purge valve, a shifter cable, and the starter were all replaced. Pros- Comfortable RideGood maneuveringHas moon roof.Heated seatsCan fit tall people inside.Cons-Hard to see behind the car when backing up due to the elevated rear.Bumpy ride sometimes (namely potholes and unpaved roads).TRANS ISSUES.EVAP issues that make the gas mileage horrible (15 mpg? Nah).

I purchased this car almost 2 years ago and have experienced some issues. Despite replacing the brakes twice, the car still has trouble driving through snow. Additionally, the air conditioning has stopped working and the tires, although new, do not hold air. The brake system has also been problematic and has been diagnosed by two different shops without success. The panoramic sunroof, which is a factory feature, leaks and the drain is located on the driver's side floor. The doors also have some leakage issues. There is a faulty oxygen sensor that we have been unable to locate. The flat piece with the speakers in the back window rattles and the 6-disc CD player skips. Finally, the roof supports that frame the windows are quite large and create some blind spots. Despite these issues, I am confident that with proper maintenance and care, this car can still provide reliable transportation.

Since you bought your car in December 2007, it has unfortunately been in the shop multiple times for almost every reason possible. It is understandable that you do not believe that Pontiac took the time to ensure the quality was up to par before putting it on the market. Your seat has broken, causing you to sit sideways while driving, and your fuel pump has gone out, requiring new smart start software and other replacements or fixes. We are sorry to hear about these issues and hope that they have been resolved to your satisfaction.

I'm coming to the end of a 3-year lease on my G6. While the car has been fun to drive at times, it has also been quite frustrating. Unfortunately, I've had to replace the rack & pinion and the 6 CD changer, and the brakes have been problematic from the start, causing squeals and shudders. Additionally, I've been experiencing some electrical issues lately, despite having only driven 27k miles. Although replacing the stock tires helped, the car still handles like a dump truck. I've taken it to the dealer several times, but unfortunately, nobody has been able to identify the root cause of the suspension/brake issues. As a lifelong fan of GM, I'm disappointed and won't be purchasing from them for a while.

Although I initially loved my Pontiac G6, I have unfortunately experienced several issues with it. Despite my loyalty to GM vehicles and my extended warranty, I have had to make multiple trips to the dealership for various repairs, including new struts, a squeaky driver seat, and issues with the lower control arm, ball joint, and swaybar. As a confident consumer, I expect reliable and high-quality products, and unfortunately, this car did not meet my expectations. Regrettably, I will not be purchasing a GM vehicle again in the future, despite my family's history with the company.

Positive 2005 Pontiac G6 car reviews

  1. Jonathan King 2024-11-26

I did a lot of research before purchasing this car. I actually gave up a Cadillac DHS for it and I'm glad I did. This car looks great and is pure fun to drive. The stereo is even better than what I had in the Cadillac, but my favorite feature is the panoramic sunroof. It moves quickly and easily. The acceleration is great and the trunk room is unbelievable. I just took my first trip in my new G6 and got an impressive 30.2 MPG. The stereo is loud and crisp and beats the Bose I had. It's clear that a lot of thought went into designing this car. This car is all about fun, fun, fun!

  2. Davonte Schuster 2024-11-15

This car is an absolute blast to own! The performance is awesome and the looks are great. I've owned mustangs, toyotas, and big trucks, but this one takes the cake. The handling is simply wonderful, and even at 110 it felt like 60 with plenty of room to spare. I opted for the GT with all the extras, and it's like stepping into a dream world every time I get behind the wheel. The car stops on a dime when needed, corners like a dream, and accelerates quickly. I would gladly pay the 25K for this car again in a heartbeat!

  3. Kadin Will 2024-11-10

My husband and I began considering this car before it was available, and we finally got to purchase it in November. Unfortunately, dealerships in our area didn't receive it until then. However, I can confidently say that it was well worth the wait! We've already driven almost 4000 miles, and I still feel excited to go anywhere and everywhere in it.

  4. Caden Hegmann 2024-10-17

So far, everything is going well. I chose the GT mainly for the wheels and the nicer cloth. My previous car, a '97 GrandAm, was a great car since new. However, I found that the 6-way seat with leather doesn't offer much more angle/height adjustability than the 2-way with cloth. I wish there was a steeper seat angle adjustment and lower tiltability for the steering wheel, but I understand that both are designed to prevent the driver from being launched OVER the airbag! Fortunately, there is much less interior chrome (taupe interior) than most supposedly nicer cars. Everyone has their own preferences, but I personally prefer the looks of both the interior and exterior of this car over the GTO or Grand Prix.

  5. Deven Torphy 2024-10-11

This is the most enjoyable car I have driven in a long time, and we lease two new cars every 2-1/2 to 3 years. I traded in a 2004 Grand Prix GTP (it was totaled in a wreck) with the supercharger, and this G6 is just as fast except for high-speed passing. Everyone who sees it says they love it, regardless of age. I am 62 and I absolutely adore it. I have seen pictures of the hard-top convertible they are going to make, and when my lease is up on this one, I intend to lease a loaded one of them. Everyone who sees it just loves it. Those who see the sunroof open ask to see how it looks in different positions.
