2019 Lincoln Navigator problems

lincoln logo

The Lincoln Navigator is a full-size luxury SUV marketed and sold by the Lincoln Motor Company brand of Ford Motor Company since the 1998 model year. Sold primarily in North America, the Navigator is the Lincoln counterpart of the Ford Expedition. It is the heaviest production Lincoln ever built, and is also the Lincoln with the greatest cargo capacity and the first non-limousine Lincoln to offer seating for more than six people.

Lincoln Navigator production was sourced from 1997 to 2009 at the Michigan Assembly Plant in Wayne, Michigan. Since 2009, production has also been sourced from the Kentucky Truck Plant in Louisville, Kentucky.

Background

At the end of the 1980s, in the United States, sport-utility vehicles gradually began to transition from dedicated off-road vehicles towards dedicated family vehicles, similar to station wagons. In 1991, the Jeep Grand Wagoneer (SJ) ended its almost unchanged 28-year production run. The vehicle had gained a famous reputation for its high content, featuring the same content as a luxury sedan. A smaller, unibody Grand Cherokee (ZJ) was induced during 1992 that offered new luxury equipment and class-exclusive features. General Motors introduced the Oldsmobile Bravada in 1990 and Ford later introduced the Mercury Mountaineer in 1996, convincing several other manufacturers to introduce mid-size luxury SUVs. As full-size SUVs such as the Chevrolet Suburban and Ford Expedition are highly profitable vehicles, the Lincoln Navigator was positioned by Ford as a full-sized, luxury SUV.

Common 2019 Lincoln Navigator problems

Based on complaints from owners of the Lincoln Navigator 2019, several common problems have been reported:

  • Air Suspension Problems: The Lincoln Navigator has been prone to air suspension issues, especially in models from 1998 to 2010. Problems arise when drivers forget to switch off the air suspension when lifting the vehicle, causing air bags to fail to adjust properly, resulting in drooping and shaking of the vehicle. Repair costs for air suspension issues can be substantial, around $2,350 for parts and service.
  • Electrical System Defects: Corroded battery cable ends have been reported in some 1998-2010 and 2015 Lincoln Navigators, leading to potential damage to the vehicle's electrical system. Corrosion can contaminate cable insulation and necessitate repairs like alternator replacements to resolve electrical problems.
  • EGR System Malfunctions: Some units of the 1998-2010 Lincoln Navigator have experienced issues with their EGR system, particularly in dusty environments. Clogged filters on the EGR solenoid can lead to engine stuttering, rough idling, or stalling. Replacing the dirty EGR solenoid filter has been effective in resolving these issues.
  • Coolant Leaks: Coolant leaks have been a common problem in certain 1999-2014 Lincoln Navigators, with owners reporting strong coolant odors, frequent engine overheating, and activated low engine coolant warning lights. Repairing coolant leaks can be challenging and may require advanced technical knowledge and skills due to the complexity of the components involved.

These issues highlight some of the key concerns faced by owners of the Lincoln Navigator 2019, ranging from mechanical to electrical and system-related problems.

ENGINE PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2024-10-01
  • VIN: 5LMJJ3TT7KE
  • Components: ENGINE
  • Summary: My vehicle fits all criteria for CSP 21B10 and CSP 21N03. The vehicle has 75714 miles whereas 21N03 covers up to 79,999 on this vehicle. The cold start rattle is very bad and drivability due to cam phaser issues has caused the vehicle to be not drivable, at least not safely… this vehicle meets all criteria for the recall, and the issue (confirmed by dealer - at dealership now) is the cam phasers and this recall 21N03 is the repair and they are very surprised our VIN is not listed, citing all of these vehicles require cam phaser replacement to be operable. As this is a known issue with 2018-2020 navigators with the 3.5 this should be covered by the recall.

ENGINE PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2024-08-08
  • VIN: 5LMJJ2TT5KE
  • Components: ENGINE
  • Summary: the engine rattles and knocks with cold start. in reviewing online, this is a very common problem. The dealership told me their service lot is full of navigators needing to have CAM? replaced. The internet confirms mechanics frustrated with spending their entire day replacing the same parts. This issue is listed on your site, but it is not a recalled item. I would suggest auditing how many of these repairs Lincoln is actually doing. I was initially told the repair cost should range between $1,000-$2,500, but after my vehicle waiting over a month in their service lot, they told me the repair cost would be $4,500. To have an issue this common on a car that cost over $100k, seems like they should take more ownership.

Recommend to replace and retest. But there is no safety recall on it so they want to charge $947 to fix it. Yet, the exact same thing happened to our FRONT seat passenger seat belt! But that was fixed because of a recall.

POWER TRAIN PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2023-03-27
  • VIN: 5LMJJ3TT7KE
  • Components: POWER TRAIN
  • Summary: The 10 speed transmission in our car shudders and vibrates badly and gets stuck in very high gears. The problem happens most often between 17-23 miles per hour, and is most noticeable on inclines. instead of downshifting to a lower gear at lowers speeds, the car is stuck in 6-7-8 gear. This causes a long hesitation where we are worried we could get rear ended or hit at an intersection. We have been shifting the car manually with the paddle shifters to drop into a lower gear, but this also takes time and causes a delay. We have been to the dealer at least 5 times for this issue and no luck on a repair. the problem has been ongoing for over a year now. Thank You.

VISIBILITY PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2023-02-03
  • VIN: 5LMJJ2LT5KE
  • Components: VISIBILITY
  • Summary: On 2/3/2023 while driving, there was a loud explosion sound in the vehicle. We immediately pulled over to try to determine the source of the sound as there were no vehicles around us, nothing near us, or over us. We opened the sunroof cover and discovered the glass had shattered. We closed the cover, exited the vehicle to look at the sunroof from the outside. We immediately called the dealership as we just purchased this vehicle used on 1/19/2023. Two weeks owning the vehicle and the sunroof explodes. We are waiting on a call back from the dealer to determine our next steps. This is definitely a safety issue as the noise could cause an accident and if the sunroof cover had been opened, the shattered glass would have been all over our family.

LATCHES/LOCKS/LINKAGES PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2021-12-03
  • Crash: 1
  • VIN: 5LMJJ2LTXKE
  • Components: LATCHES/LOCKS/LINKAGES
  • Summary: The rear trunk latch disconnects from the car during any instance and projects the trunk open in a rapid manner. This issue occurred 3 times. The first time the vehicle was pulling into my garage and the trunk opened without prompting. The trunk smashed against the top of the garage and the facade of my home. Lincoln reviewed the electrical system and determined the event occurred without my involvement and replaced the latch. They did not call it a recall issue but did agree that they have seen it occur more than a few times. Subsequently, the issue occurred again. I was pulling into an indoor garage at a mall, and the trunk opened voluntarily once again. This time no damage occurred as I pulled to the side and remedied the situation. The third occurrence happened a few days ago as I dropped my 10 year old off at home. The trunk once again voluntarily opened. Each time i could've been driving at a faster speed and each time these incidences occurred I had parts of my family in the vehicle. There were never any warning lamps and the manufacturer has gone silent with what the issue is. I am concerned that this can occur at a higher rate of speed with all of my children in the car.
