2006 Volkswagen New beetle problems
The Volkswagen New Beetle is a compact car, introduced by Volkswagen in 1997, drawing heavy inspiration from the exterior design of the original Beetle. Unlike the original Beetle, the New Beetle has its engine in the front, driving the front wheels, with luggage storage in the rear. It was revised in 2005 and was in production until 2011, almost fourteen years since introduction.
In 2011 for the 2012 model year, a new Beetle model, the Beetle (A5), replaced the New Beetle. It is often referred to as the New Beetle as well. Various versions of this model continued to be made in Puebla, Mexico, until the final car left the assembly line on 10 July 2019.
History
At the 1994 North American International Auto Show, Volkswagen unveiled the Concept One, a "retro"-themed concept car with a resemblance to the original Volkswagen Beetle. Designed by J Mays and Freeman Thomas at the company's California design studio, the concept car was based on the platform of the Volkswagen Polo. A red cabriolet concept was featured at the Geneva Motor Show, also in 1994.
Production design approval was reached in mid-1995, with a design freeze resulting in 22 months of development time for production. In October 1995, the Volkswagen Concept Two was shown at the Tokyo Motor Show, essentially an early preview of the production model due in early 1998.
Strong public reaction to the Concept One convinced the company that it should develop a production version which was launched as the New Beetle in 1997 for the 1998 model-year, based on the Golf IV's larger PQ34 platform. The New Beetle is related to the original only in name and appearance (including the absence of a car emblem script with the exception of the VW logo). For the 1998 model year, only the TDI compression-ignition engine was turbocharged; the spark-ignition engines were only naturally aspirated. In June 1999, Volkswagen introduced the 1.8T, which was the first turbocharged spark-ignition engine offered for the New Beetle. Volkswagen created a web site dedicated specifically to the 1.8T. A convertible was added for the 2003 model-year to replace the Volkswagen Cabrio. However, the New Beetle Convertible was never offered with a compression-ignition engine in North America. The third-generation Beetle Convertible, the successor to the New Beetle Convertible, was offered with the TDI compression-ignition engine in the USA but not in Canada, though, making it possibly the only diesel convertible car offered in North America.
The New Beetle carries many design similarities with the original VW Beetle: separate fenders, vestigial running boards, sloping headlamps, and large round taillights, as well as a high rounded roofline. It was assembled in VW's Puebla factory in Mexico.
In June 2005, Volkswagen announced a facelift of the New Beetle featuring revised bumpers, wheels, lamps, VW emblems, sharper lines and a different interior. In the USA it went on sale for the 2006 model year.

- Summary: PURCHASED VEHICLE FROM USED CAR DEALER 5/2014. WITHIN 6 WEEKS A NOTICEABLE ODOR OF GAS BOTH IN THE PASSENGER COMPARTMENT AND OUTSIDE THE CAR.WHEN STANDING WITHIN 5 FEET OF IT. REGULAR MAINTENANCE WAS PERFORMED BUT LICENSED REPAIR SHOPS WERE UNABLE/UNWILLING TO FIND A CAUSE. THE CAR WAS DRIVEN APPROXIMATELY 8 MILES WITHIN THE CITY OF TUCSON, AZ ON PUBLIC ROADWAYS TODAVIS-MONTHAN AFB FOR SERVICE AGAIN. THE TECHNICIAN IMMEDIATELY EVACUATED MY CAR'S DRIVER AWAY FROM IT AS HE SAW FUEL HAD SPILLED INTO THE TRUNK SPACE, TRAVELED THROUGH THE ACCESS PANEL, SPILLED INTO THE BACKSEAT PASSENGER COMPARTMENT UNDER THE BACK SEAT, SATURATED THE CARPET AND FLOOR MATS, AND HAD BEGUN REACHING BENEATH THE FRONT SEATS. THE FUEL WAS HOSED UNTIL IT COULD SAFELY BE DRIVEN OFF THE MILITARY BASE THEN TOWED TO A VW DEALERSHIP. PER THE DEALERSHIP'S SERVICE MANAGER, THE FUEL PUMP HAD CRACKED AND CAUSED SEVERAL GALLONS OF GAS INTO THE CAR. NEITHER VW OF AMERICA OR IT'S AUTHORIZED DEALER ARE ABLE TO GIVE ME A DETAILED DESCRIPTION OF WHAT HAD BEEN ADDRESSED IN 2011, PRIOR TO MY OWNERSHIP, REGARDING THE FUEL SYSTEM RECALL REFERENCE NHTSA #10V621000, AND VW WILL NOT FUND THE REPAIR OF THE FUEL SYSTEM. VW OF AMERICA REPORTS TO NHTSA THAT NO RECALL REPAIRS REMAIN TO BE DONE. ALL REPAIRS TO THE FUEL SYSTEM; GASOLINE DELIVERY HOSES, LINES/PIPING, AND FITTINGS HAVE BEEN COMPLETED ON 2006-2010 CERTAIN MODELS JETTA, NEW. BEETLE, BEETLE CONVERTIBLES, JETTA SPORTWAGON, AND RABBIT VEHICLES. WITHOUT VW PROVIDING ME A RECALL REPAIR RECORD AND ACCEPTING NO RESPONSIBILITY TO PROVIDE ME SUCH, I AM SCREWED!! AS A SINGLE, HARD WORKING MOTHER, I CAN NEITHER AFFORD 1K TO FIX IT OR A MONTHLY PAYMENT ON A CAR THAT CAN'T BE DRIVEN. VW ONCE AGAIN REVEALS IT'S REPREHENSIBLE PRACTICE OF DECEIVING AMERICAN CONSUMERS.

- Summary: WHILE DRIVING ON HIGHWAY, ABOUT 70 MPH, CAR BUCKED AND SEEMED TO BEGIN TO LOSE POWER. TACHOMETER DROPPED TO 0 THEN SWUNG BACK UP TO 2-3. EPC LIGHT CAME ON. I COULDN'T ACCELERATE BEYOND 65 MPH. DURING SLOWED TRAFFIC, CAR BEGAN IDLING EXTREMELY HIGH. HAD TO CONTROL IT WITH CLUTCH. (IT'S A MANUAL.) CAR IS DRIVABLE, BUT CONTINUES TO BUCK AND EPC CONTINUES ON. DEALERSHIP SUGGESTED REPLACE THROTTLE BOARD, BUT ALL MY RESEARCH SUGGESTS THAT MOST DRIVERS WHO HAVE DONE SO SAY THIS DID NOT SOLVE THE PROBLEM. THERE ARE HUGE DISCUSSIONS ABOUT THIS PROBLEM ON MULTIPLE MESSAGE BOARDS, SO IT SEEMS TO BE AN ONGOING, RECOGNIZED, CONSISTENT PROBLEM, AND PROBABLY A SAFETY HAZARD, AS A CAR STALLING ON THE HIGHWAY, OR IDLING TOO HIGH IN TRAFFIC IS NOT A GOOD SITUATION.

I grew up in a VW family, where everyone drove them. Over the years, I have owned more than 15 VWs. Unfortunately, I had some issues with my transmission, which was defective from day one. Despite my attempts to get help from VW, they were unable to assist me. When it broke around 10,000 miles, they suggested that I might be 'riding the clutch.' I also experienced some problems with the flywheel, which was a common issue with many of these vehicles. Unfortunately, VW did nothing to address this problem. In addition, my car overheated in traffic, struggled on hills, and shook all over, eventually becoming disabled. I also had some issues with the lights, windows, and A/C compressor. As a long-time VW customer, I was disappointed that the company did not stand behind their product. Despite these issues, I still find VWs cute and responsive. However, the manufacturing defect that VW failed to address has caused me to lose faith in the brand. I hope that VW will take responsibility for their mistakes and work to regain the trust of their loyal customers.

I'm patiently waiting for my lease to end. This is actually my second VW, having previously leased a Jetta, and unfortunately, I've experienced similar issues. I've decided to avoid taking it to the dealership for oil changes as it would cost me over $80 per change. Unfortunately, this car has spent a lot of time in the shop due to constant electrical problems, such as the traction light staying on, the seatbelt light coming on randomly, and the back latch not working. It's been frustrating dealing with these issues, and I'm disappointed with VW in general. I've also had some challenges with customer service, as they don't offer a free rental car despite the numerous repairs. The only reason I was able to get by during my last repair was because the driver who takes you home was unavailable.
-
I love my bug! However, I have one constant problem: the headliner pops out from the back window every time I put the top down. It has been to the shop numerous times.
-
Congratulations on your purchase! It sounds like you found a great deal on a well-maintained 06 TDI with low mileage. Heinz (love the name!) seems to be the perfect vehicle for your gig work, even during times of high diesel prices. It's impressive that you've been able to fit comfortably in the spacious front seat, despite being a 6'4

I love my 2006 Volkswagen Beetle! It's amazing how much money I'm saving on gas compared to my old Ford Explorer. Even though it has one less cylinder, I can't even tell the difference. Plus, the new lights and lines make it look so unique and stylish. I highly recommend taking it for a test drive - it's so much fun to drive! And if you end up getting the harvest beige color, I've found that Mr. Clean magic erasers work wonders for removing any leftover adhesive or small scuff marks :)

Although this car has presented some challenges, I am confident in my ability to address them. I have taken care of all necessary repairs and replacements, ensuring that the car is in top condition. While it has required some attention, I am proud to have taken on the task of maintaining this vehicle. I am committed to resolving any issues that may arise and ensuring that this car continues to serve me well.

I have experienced several issues with this vehicle in the short time that I have owned it. Specifically, I have had to replace the driver's side headlight twice and the exterior mirror has cracked down the middle without any apparent cause. Additionally, I have encountered problems with the power windows, which seems to be a common issue among other owners. Based on my experiences, I do not find this vehicle to be reliable and I am considering trading it in for a more dependable option.
Alford Ernser 2024-06-11
The car is definitely a blast to drive, but unfortunately, it has had some consistent reliability and quality control issues. Additionally, the cost of servicing and repairing the car is quite high. We experienced some trouble with the theft control system, which was eventually resolved through a recall, but it did leave us stranded a few times. We also had to deal with issues related to the headlights, window motor, and convertible top, which required multiple trips to the dealership and resulted in the car being off the road for several days. It's worth noting that the car is quite susceptible to dings. Overall, while the car is fun, the reliability issues and high service costs do detract from the overall satisfaction with the vehicle.
Bernardo Murray 2024-04-10
I purchased this car brand new, but unfortunately experienced some issues with the wiper blade motor failing during a rainy night on fwy 101. Over the first two years of ownership, I had to have 13 warranties done. Since then, I have had to visit the dealership 20 times for various reasons such as oil changes, recalls, and warranties, so I am quite familiar with the staff. Recently, I had an oil change done at 50k mileage and noticed some oil leaks. I took it back to the dealer and they changed the drain plug, but unfortunately the issue persisted and I had to bring it back again. Although it was frustrating to have to leave the car overnight, the dealership staff were very helpful in trying to locate the source of the leak. I have spent a lot of money on regular maintenance, all of which has been done through dealers, but I feel that the issues I have experienced are not reflective of the quality of the VW brand. I hope that these issues can be resolved in the future.
Reymundo Robel 2024-03-18
Like many other VW owners, we are unfortunately filing for lemon law this year. We have had several issues with our car, including the windows randomly going down, the front logo peeling off, the starter not working all the time, the radio quitting, the top breaking twice, a metallic sound from the front, and only getting 20 mpg at best despite the window sticker claiming better. Although the dealership has fixed the issues each time, more problems seem to arise after a couple of weeks. It has been frustrating, to say the least.
