Common 2000 Volkswagen Gti problems

The Volkswagen GTI, particularly the 2000 model, is known for several common problems based on complaints from owners. These problems span across different categories, including engine, transmission, and electrical issues.

  • Transmission Problems: The 2011 Volkswagen GTI has been reported to have engine and transmission problems, with almost 70 reports of difficult shifting. This issue can lead to inconvenience and additional costs for car owners.
  • Window Regulator Failures: The window regulators are a common pain point for MK4 owners, including the GTI. This issue is generally fixed under warranty, but it can still cause problems for car owners. The plastic clips that hold the window glass on its track can break or crack, causing the window to not function properly. The regulator cable itself is also known to bind and tangle, causing the regulator to fail completely.
  • Brake Light Switch Failures: The brake light switch is another inconvenience for MK4 owners, including the GTI. This switch tells the brake lights when to illuminate once the brake pedal is pressed. There were so many instances of brake light switch failures in the MK4 that multiple switches were introduced, including a purple switch and a green switch. If the brake lights either won't come on or won't turn off, or if the automatic MK4 can't get out of park, it's likely the brake light switch that's causing the problem.
  • Catalytic Converter Failures: Catalytic converter failure is a common issue in the MK4, including the GTI. This issue can lead to a CEL illuminated and a P0420 code, indicating that the catalyst efficiency is below the threshold. Replacing the catalytic converter can be expensive, but it's necessary to clear the CEL and meet emission standards.
  • Coolant Temp Sensor Failures: The Coolant Temp Sensor, or Engine Temperature Control sensor, is a regular failure point in the MK4, including the GTI. The early versions of this sensor, which were black in color, failed so frequently that they were the first thing technicians would replace when MK4s came in with funky drivability issues. The symptoms of a failed CTS range from a CEL to misfires to no-start issues to intermittent temperature gauge failure.
  • Suspension Bushing Failures: As the MK4s on the road continue to age, their suspension bushings can fail, leading to clunking, squeaking, or play in the suspension. This issue can be caused by a variety of factors, including wear and tear and lack of maintenance.

In conclusion, while the Volkswagen GTI is a popular car among enthusiasts, it has several common problems that car owners should be aware of. These issues can lead to inconvenience, additional costs, and even safety concerns. It's essential to stay informed about these problems and take preventive measures to avoid them.

Is GTI high maintenance?

VW GTI is robust, simple and well-built car. Being used with sense, maintenance is not more expensive, than any other mini. Once driver starts to push his GTI over the limit, maintenance costs will skyrocket.

What are the disadvantages of GTI?

Cons

  • Infotainment system can be frustrating to use.
  • Not as much power as some rival hot hatches.

How good is the GTI engine?

Power for the standard Mk8 Golf GTI is a solid if unspectacular 242bhp, but there is a degree of tech wizardry under the skin which helps to sharpen up the iconic hatch.

ENGINE AND ENGINE COOLING,UNKNOWN OR OTHER PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2006-03-04
  • VIN: WVWDE21J5YW
  • Components: ENGINE AND ENGINE COOLING,UNKNOWN OR OTHER
  • Summary: ON MARCH 3, 2006, I WENT TO THE METRO VOLKSWAGEN TO HAVE MY INSPECTION AND AN OIL CHANGE DONE. THE SERVICE REP TOLD ME I HAD A SMALL HOLE IN MY OIL PAN, SO I AGREED TO REPLACE THE PAN. THE NEXT MORNING WHEN I STARTED MY CAR IT SHUT OFF THREE TIMES. SINCE THEN, MY CAR HAS SHUT OFF EVERY TIME I START IT. IF I PULL OFF BEFORE THE CAR COMPLETELY HEATS UP, THE CAR SHUTS OFF IN MID DRIVE. THIS CAUSES ME TO PULL OVER AND RESTART THE CAR AND HOLD MY FOOT ON THE GAS IN ORDER TO KEEP THE CAR FROM SHUTTING DOWN. I HAVE NOTICED WATER IN MY CAR ON THE DRIVER'S SIDE FLOOR (BACK), BUT I THOUGHT IT WAS CONDENSATION CAUSED FROM THE PLASTIC MAT I KEEP UNDER THE DRIVERS SIDE RUG. I RECEIVED A RECALL NOTICE IN THE MAIL AND TOOK THE CAR IN ON MAY 25, 2006 FOR A FUEL LINE, AND HAZARD SWITCH REPLACEMENT. AS OF FRIDAY, JUNE 2, 2006, I'VE SMELLED GASOLINE WHEN I TURNED MY CAR ON, AND THE RUG IN THE BACK (DRIVERS SIDE) WAS SOAKED WITH WATER. IT HAD NOT RAINED UNTIL 3:45 PM, AND I HAD NOT DRIVEN THE CALL ALL DAY EXCEPT FOR THAT MORNING. SATURDAY JUNE 3, 2006, I OPENED MY DRIVER SIDE DOOR TO DISCOVER A HUGE PUDDLE ON THE REAR FLOOR OF THE DRIVER'S SIDE AND THE FRONT RUG AND MAT SOAKED WITH BROWN WATER. IT WAS RAINING SLIGHTLY BUT THERE WAS NO LEAK COMING FROM THE WINDOWS, OR THE MOON ROOF, AND THE TOP OF THE CAR (INSIDE) WAS COMPLETELY DRY. I ALSO SMELLED GASOLINE AGAIN WHICH PROMPTED MY DECISION TO CALL VOLKSWAGEN. I WAS TOLD BY A SERVICE REP TO BRING THE CAR BACK IN ON JUNE 5 2006. *JB

POWER TRAIN PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2003-04-13
  • Crash: 1
  • VIN: WVWDH21J0YW
  • Components: POWER TRAIN
  • Summary: MY 2000 VW GTI 1.8T MANUAL TRANSMISSION'S CLUTCH KEEPS FAILING. I ADMIT I DROVE IT AGGRESSIVELY WHEN I FIRST BOUGHT IT... AFTER ALL, THAT'S HOW THEY ADVERTISE THE VEHICLE, AS A SPORTY, FAST CAR. WELL, I'VE REPLACED IT THREE TIMES (YES, I'M ON MY FOURTH CLUTCH IN FOUR YEARS!!!) AND EVEN THOUGH AFTER EACH REPAIR I'VE REDUCED THE AGGRESSIVENESS OF MY DRIVING TO THE POINT WHERE I'M PRACTICALLY A LITTLE OLD GRANNY NOW, THE DURN THING KEEPS WEARING OUT AFTER ABOUT A YEAR, AND I CAN FEEL MY CURRENT ONE GETTING MUSHY, SEEMING TO SLIP, LIKE IT'S ABOUT TO GO OUT AGAIN. ONE INCIDENT IT HAPPENED ON THE HIGHWAY, AND I WAS LUCKY I WASN'T KILLED. BECAUSE I HAD TO COAST TO GET OFF THE FREEWAY, I FELT I NEEDED TO BE AS FAR TO THE RIGHT IN THE 'VEHICLE BREAKDOWN LANE' AS I COULD. WELL, THERE WAS A LARGE CHUNK OF METAL, A LARGE WATER SPIGOT OR SOMETHING, LYING IN THE MIDDLE OF THE EMERGENCY LANE AND, SINCE I COULDN'T VERY WELL SWERVE BACK INTO THE TRAFFIC SPEEDING NEXT TO ME AT WELL OVER TWICE MY OWN VELOCITY, I ENDED UP HITTING IT AND TEARING UP MY TRANSMISSION CASING (THE 'CRASH' I INDICATED). THIS IS GETTING RIDICULOUS. SOMETHING NEEDS TO BE DONE. *AK

SHE HAD LEFT THE CAR IN GEAR WITH THE BRAKE ON. THIS IS THE SECOND TIME THIS TYPE INCIDENT HAS OCCURRED WITH THIS VEHICLE. WE REPORTED IT TO VW CUSTOMER CARE AND THEY SAID THEY DO NOT HAVE AN ACTIVE CAMPAIGN ON INVOLVING THIS TYPE OF PROBLEM. THEY SAID I COULD TAKE IT TO A VW DEALER AT MY EXPENSE TO DIAGNOSE IF THERE WAS A PROBLEM. THIS IS A RIDICULOUS SOLUTION. *JB

FORTUNATELY, I WAS IN A PARKING LOT AND THE CAR WASN'T MOVING. I HATE TO THINK WHAT WOULD HAVE HAPPENED IF I HAD BEEN ON THE EXPRESSWAY. AFTER DOING SOME RESEARCH ON THE INTERNET, I DISCOVERED THAT I AM NOT THE ONLY VW OWNER WHO HAS EXPERIENCED THIS PROBLEM, AND I UNDERSTAND THAT VOLKSWAGEN HAS REDESIGNED THE WINDOW MECHANISM ON SUBSEQUENT MODELS. (MY PASSENGER-SIDE WINDOW HAS BEEN STUCK CLOSED FOR SEVERAL MONTHS.)LAST YEAR, VOLKSWAGEN OFFERED A SEVEN-YEAR-FROM-PURCHASE EXTENDED WARRANTY FOR PROBLEMS WITH THE WINDOWS ON MY CAR. THEY DID NOT SPECIFY WHAT THE PROBLEMS WERE. I THINK THEY SHOULD HAVE ISSUED A RECALL. THIS IS A SAFETY ISSUE! PLEASE INVESTIVATE.*AK

Negative 2000 Volkswagen Gti car reviews

  1. Webster Rowe 2024-09-07

The console controls could use some improvement as they are difficult to read. Additionally, the suspension is quite soft and may require an upgrade to fully meet the car's advertised capabilities. Lastly, there seems to be some road noise that comes through.

  2. Jairo Bergnaum 2024-07-06

I recently sold my VW after driving it for over 30K miles. Unfortunately, the car had some issues such as rusting, worn-out suspension, and repeated problems with the side windows that the dealership failed to fix. Additionally, there were some rattling noises when driving that were quite annoying. It's a shame because I really wanted to like the car, but these issues made it difficult to enjoy. Plus, the trunk was too small to fit a golf bag, which was a bit disappointing.

  3. Bernhard Runolfsson 2024-01-13

Although the 2000 GTI has a comfortable and stylish design, I cannot recommend it due to its poor reliability. The vehicle experienced constant breakdowns, including issues with the power window retainer clip, glove box hinge, and exterior bulbs. Additionally, the engine valve and clutch required expensive repairs, and the CD changer malfunctioned. Instead, I suggest considering other options such as the Impreza, RSX, or Sentra, which offer better quality and reliability.

Positive 2000 Volkswagen Gti car reviews

  1. William Cormier 2024-11-22

I've never owned a VR6, but I was really impressed by its performance, luxurious looks, and comfort. I've read a lot of reviews on this car, and while some people have reported issues with things like rattling and windows, I've been lucky so far (knock on wood) with over 40k miles and only one problem with the side airbag. As for the tape player, I think it's actually a good thing, not a bad thing, and I don't understand why some people complain about it. Overall, the car handles great for what it is, and the brakes are good enough.

  2. Jaime Wyman 2024-10-25

As someone who is particular about cars, I must say that I am really impressed with this vehicle. Its European design is simply stunning and the acceleration is incredibly smooth. I think this car is a real gem and I hope it serves me well.

  3. Brad Stracke 2024-10-21

The 2000 GTI is an amazing car in many ways. The finish is beyond what one would expect from a car of this price range. The drive is an absolute blast, especially the high-end torque. I love the feeling of moving the car from 60 to 80 mph. However, it's important to note that maintenance can be costly. I have had to pay over $8,000 for maintenance alone, excluding oil changes and the like, and I haven't even reached 40,000 miles yet. So, if you're considering buying a used car, be aware of the potential costs. I have had to replace everything from the oil pan to wheel bearings to ignition coils, all in less than 40,000 miles. It's worth noting that I take good care of the car and I'm not a crazy or aggressive driver.

  4. Dillan Hegmann 2024-10-21

This car is great! Even after 71000 miles, I still enjoy opening up on some deserted back road. Although she has lost a step or two since she was new, the windows gave her a lot of trouble. Finally, they got it right with the new regulator clip and there have been no problems since. We'll see after another 70000.

  5. Thurman White 2024-10-13

I really appreciate this car. If the new GTI offered a 6-cylinder engine, I would definitely consider getting a brand new one. This car is impressively fast and also very affordable. It has never let me down on the side of the road, nor has it ever required any major repairs. I only need to do regular maintenance such as oil changes, tire rotations, wiper replacements, and new tires. I also added a K&N air filter which made it even faster. I really enjoy driving it!
