The Jeep Renegade is a subcompact crossover SUV produced by Stellantis under their Jeep marque. It was first shown to the public in March 2014 at the Geneva Motor Show and production started in late August of that year. The Renegade was the smallest vehicle currently marketed by Jeep, until the arrival of the Avenger. It slots between the Avenger and the Compass. It is based on the FCA Small Wide 4×4 platform which is also shared with other FCA models, including from Fiat and Alfa Romeo brands.

The Renegade came standard with front-wheel drive, with optional four-wheel drive systems Active Drive I and Active Drive Low, both of which are paired with Jeep's Selec-Terrain System.

Overview

The Renegade is the first Jeep product to be produced exclusively outside of North America and has been sold in the North American, European, Brazilian, South African, Australian, Japanese and Chinese markets. The vehicle is built in Melfi, Italy with the designation BU/520, alongside the related Fiat 500X; Goiana, Brazil with the designation B1 (alongside Jeep Compass and Fiat Toro); and in Guangzhou, China codenamed BQ.

Standard Renegade models come with front-wheel drive, with four-wheel drive available on Sport, Latitude and Limited trims. In the US, the lineup consists of Sport, Latitude and Limited trims, all of which come with a choice of front- and four-wheel drive, as well as the Trailhawk trim, which is 4WD only.

The Renegade has an available My Sky dual-panel removable roof. The My Sky can be either retracted like a standard sunroof or removed completely for a more open-air experience, similar to that of the Jeep Wrangler.

Common 2015 Jeep Renegade problems

The Jeep Renegade, introduced in 2014, has had its fair share of issues, particularly with the 2015 model.

Another common problem with the 2015 Jeep Renegade is transmission issues, specifically with the 9-speed automatic transmission. Owners have reported hard shifts, extended shift timings, jerking, unresponsiveness, hesitations, and other related problems.

Excessive emissions have also been a significant issue for the 2015 Jeep Renegade, with many owners failing their emission tests due to excessive emissions. Unfortunately, there is no documented fix for this particular issue.

Random vehicle shutoff is another problem that 2015 Jeep Renegade owners have experienced. Some owners have reported that their vehicle shuts off intermittently, which can be a severe safety concern.

In addition to these issues, the 2015 Jeep Renegade has also had problems with software updates, side airbags, engine mounts, and wiring harnesses, which can affect the vehicle's performance and safety.

The 2015 Jeep Renegade's engine mounts, specifically the right side engine mount, may not have been manufactured correctly, leading to the need for replacement.

The 2015 Jeep Renegade's side airbags of examples made between 30 October and 22 November 2016 could fail to deploy in a collision, requiring replacement of the faulty airbags.

The Renegade finished in a poor 30th place out of 35 cars featured in the small SUV class in the most recent What Car? Reliability Survey, indicating that the vehicle has had significant reliability issues.

In summary, the 2015 Jeep Renegade has had several significant issues, including check engine light problems, transmission issues, excessive emissions, random vehicle shutoff, software updates, side airbags, engine mounts, and wiring harnesses. These issues have affected the vehicle's performance, safety, and reliability, making it a problematic model year for the Jeep Renegade.

I was told it was the thermostat which they replaced. I didn't take it back to Jeep until May,2024 due to it was only shifting hard sometimes and I figured they would not do anything. I took the car in due to hard shift and tire pressure light being on a day after it came on. Jeep fixed, a day later it came back, Jeep fixed. When I got home, TP light on again. Now they tell me the shifting is a different problem because the computer says DTC code went off a month ago saying there was a problem (and claim I have to bring in within a week). No warning lights or messages other than the tire pressure light which is still being fixed. Also see SB#21-025-19

  • VIN: ZACCJBCT0FP
  • Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,ENGINE,FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM
  • Summary: Car randomly stalls in park, when reversing, when in drive but brake is being applied, or when first accelerating after putting into drive. Several times now it has stalled when I'm at stop lights. One time it stalled after just tapping the brake while approaching a stop light. That was terrifying because the car was still in motion. Also, car randomly jerks hard when shifting gears. Recently, car doesn't want to shift while accelerating up hills, and RPM's can get up to 4.5 or 5. No engine light or other warnings lights ever come on. I have brought it to my mechanic two times now about the hard shifting and stalling.Have another appointment this week. They can't figure out what's causing it. Nor can they replicate the problem. This can happen a few times a day, then go weeks without an issue. I've seen the same problems from dozens of people on Jeep forums for 2015 -2017 models. No one had a solution, while seemingly getting brushed off by the dealerships about it.

STEERING,ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,AIR BAGS PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2023-09-08
  • VIN: ZACCJABT4FP
  • Components: STEERING,ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,AIR BAGS
  • Summary: My vehicle recently started showing warning/service lights for no reason; airbag, power steering, park lights, coolant, check engine etc. My engine would also keeps running even after removing the keys.. My battery would also be dead the next day (new battery) if battery is not disconnected . Power door locks , also stops working via fob and manual. While driving the power steering would also stops working (very dangerous) as this will prevent you from turning and can cause collision. Engine will start but dies after 5 seconds. I have looked online in jeep forums and this problems appears to be related to ignition switch. The problems the car is having is very identical to those renegade owners posted on line. Other renegade owners got the ignition switch replaced and fixed the problem. As of now, there is no recall for this particular issue but should be investigated. I will be taking my car for recalls and also to include this problem to get fixed. This is a safety matter as it could cause fatality.

ENGINE PROBLEM

Long story short it just stopped! no Start had it towed fixed $2,592. made it home wouldn’t start towed again next morning fixed it again a valve actuator $1,740 for the part again it failed in 30 miles towed again the part was shipped wrong apparently shipped wet no idea what that means dealer Roberson will warranty the part but it’s sitting there broken again and I’m not sure if they fix it again if it will be dependable? FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2015-05-31
  • VIN: ZACCJABT5FP
  • Components: FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM
  • Summary: Jeep Renegade 2015 . THE CAP LESS FUELSYSTEM. Can't physically put gas nozzle into the tank. I even tried the plastic funnel that comes with the jeep and that won't go in either. There are 3 plastic tabs that must be pushed in by the nozzle before the metal flap will release and allow the pump in. Two smaller ones in the upper left/right and one large one on the bottom. Sometimes these can get gummed(or in my case were kinda defective straight from the factory). In 2019 Renegade redesign the gas tank differently so I'm guessing they know about this issue. There are forum on top of forums about this problem. We really need a recall on this. Eventually, I have to exchange my cap less fuel system since I am dreading every trip to a gas station. I can't drive my car if I can't put gas in it.

ELECTRICAL SYSTEM PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2021-07-07
  • VIN: ZACCJABT1FP
  • Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM
  • Summary: My car turns off at random times while driving. This has happened while going down the highway at high speeds and while turning left into a business and everything in between. I am usually able to start the car after waiting five minutes or so and it may or may not turn off again before I reach my destination. I have taken it to the dealership 3 times for this issue with no resolve. The first time I took my car to the dealership was July 14th, 2021 and they determined it was the battery, that did not solve the issue. On December 29, 2022 I took the vehicle to the dealership and on January 09, 2023 I picked it up. They told me my battery cable was loose, that was not the issue. On January 24 I took it back and on February 7, 2023 I picked it up. The dealership replaced the wiring harness, but the issue still remains. Driving down the road at any speed and having the car shut off is a safety risk to everyone around. When my daughter was turning left into a business she was terrified and blocking traffic going both directions and had to be pushed out of the road. While driving down the road I constantly am looking for a plan of action, a place that I can coast off the road if my car dies. The dealership has not been able to recreate this problem. The vehicle has not been inspected by anyone other than the dealership. 60% of the time all of the warning lamps are on, and the other part of the time just the check engine light and battery lamp are on, but this is not an indication of if the car will safely get me to my destination without turning off. Sometimes it does and sometimes it does not. I am not the only one who has suffered this issue. Numerous similar incidents can be found from other people on various websites.

  • Remedy: Chrysler will notify owners, and dealers will install two additional fasteners per side, free of charge. The recall began on October 13, 2016. Owners may contact Chrysler customer service at 1-800-853-1403. Chrysler's number for this recall is S62.

Optionally, owners may download the update to their own USB drive from http://www.driveuconnect.com/software-update/ or take their vehicle to a Chrysler dealer for immediate installation. In an effort to mitigate the effects of this security vulnerability, Chrysler has had the wireless service provider close the open cellular connection to the vehicle that provided unauthorized access to the vehicle network. This measure may not have been implemented on all vehicles and does not address access by other means that will be remedied by the software update. The recall began on September 30, 2015. Owners may contact Chrysler customer service at 1-800-853-1403. Chrysler's number for this recall is R45.

Negative 2015 Jeep Renegade car reviews

  1. Nick Prosacco 2025-10-25

We recently purchased a 2015 Jeep Renegade with less than 100 miles for our daughter. Although it was cute, we were disappointed to find that the brakes started squeaking before it even reached 1000 miles. We had to replace the front brakes around 1500 miles and the back brakes with only 500 additional miles on the car. Unfortunately, we are now experiencing issues with the electric locks and will need to take it back to the service department. Despite these setbacks, we remain hopeful that the service department will be able to resolve the issue. We appreciate their efforts and hope to have a dependable car soon.

  2. Chaz Macejkovic 2025-10-24

We have driven over 13k miles on our 2015 Renegade Sport 4x4 with the 2.4 liter engine and the 9 speed auto tranny. Although we have had some quality issues from the start, we still enjoy driving it. We also own a 2008 Jeep Commander that has been an excellent vehicle both on and off road. Our Renegade has had some wind noise at the driver's door since new, but we are working with the dealer to resolve it. The transmission can be a bit sluggish at times, but it hasn't affected our overall driving experience. We have had some minor issues with the door locks and brakes, but they have been resolved quickly by the dealer. Since it is built by Fiat in Italy, parts can take some time to get, but we have been able to get what we need. It is a cute little car that we would recommend to someone who is looking for a fun and unique driving experience. While the Renegade is different from other Jeeps, we still feel confident taking it out into the mountains of Colorado. If you want a Jeep, the Wrangler or Cherokee are great options, but we would still recommend the Renegade for those who want something a bit different. Update: Now at 19.5k miles, our Renegade is in the shop for the 4th time with continuing wind noise and window/door trim issues. The dealer appears to finally be taking it seriously now that we have opened a case with FCA and are discussing our options with a lemon law attorney. If they fail to repair it this time, we may file it as a lemon and see if we can force FCA to buy it back. We would trade out of the Renegade into a Wrangler in a heartbeat if the dealer would give us what is owed on it. Unfortunately that is likely going to require legal action. If you are considering the Renegade, we encourage you to do your research and make an informed decision. Update: Now at 27.5k miles. After the latest update, the dealer finally discovered that the driver's side window was malformed/warped, causing all the wind noise/trim issues in the driver's side front door. They replaced the window and solved the wind noise issue. We have no other major issues to report and have upgraded our star rating to a 3. Unfortunately, we don't have a Jeep dealer within 50 miles that knows the definition of customer service. However, our local GMC/Chevy dealer, which is absolutely outstanding, takes care of most of our maintenance needs now. As for the 40k miles update, not much is new to report other than the radio having periodic issues. To reset it, we have to disconnect a battery cable. It's just one more quirky thing on the 2015 Renegade.

We were so excited when we bought our Renegade in May, but unfortunately we've had a few issues since then. Right after we drove it off the lot, a coil burnt up in the motor, which took a month to repair because of some parts mix-ups. We also had a broken window seal that caused a strange noise, but that was fixed after a week. Additionally, the computer has been acting up, giving us notifications for services we don't need. Finally, we had a bit of trouble with the locks, but thankfully we were able to resolve it without too much hassle. Overall, we're a bit disappointed with the car, especially since I've been wanting one since the concept was first announced.

I have experienced multiple issues with my Renegade and have had to bring it in for repairs several times. Despite having the top end of the engine and transmission replaced, as well as dealing with electrical issues, I am still experiencing problems with the engine and transmission. Unfortunately, the dealership (Rockaway Chrysler Dodge Jeep Ram) has not been able to provide satisfactory service, and I have had to deal with multiple service managers during my ownership of this vehicle. I have even reached out to corporate for assistance, but have not received much help. One particularly dangerous incident occurred when the car stalled while I was entering the parkway, but thankfully a truck driver behind me was able to avoid a collision. While the service department has often cited code upgrades as a solution, I have not seen any improvement in the vehicle's performance. It is clear that there are significant issues with this Jeep, and I hope that a resolution can be found soon.

Although I initially enjoyed the car, I have experienced several issues within the first month of ownership. The car has had to be taken to the shop three times due to constant electrical problems, and the door locks and ignition system have both failed and required replacement. The car has been towed twice to the dealership and has spent a total of ten days in the shop. It is important to exercise caution when considering purchasing a Fiat product bearing a Jeep label. However, I am confident that these issues can be resolved and I remain optimistic about the car's potential.

2 months into ownership, here are my thoughts. The good: I took it on some tough terrain and it performed excellently. The short overall length made maneuvering easy and fun. I love the interior look and feel, and have received quite a few compliments from both men and women. There's also plenty of headroom, even with the mySky. The back seat has enough room for 8 and 10 year olds. The bad: Opening the sunroof portion of mySky when there's morning dew will result in getting wet. With both parts of the mySky off and going at highway speeds, you'll need to roll down the windows at least halfway to avoid significant rattling of the center bar. The gas tank is small and the fuel mileage is just okay, so frequent fill-ups are necessary. I had the 4WD out of service light come on once, but turning the vehicle on and off made it go away. Conclusion: This is my first Jeep and I'm still having a lot of fun with it. I would buy it again if I could do it over. I did test drive the Latitude, which has a really different feel. Try both, as they are different animals. However, I would say Trailhawk or bust on this one. The Trailhawk is priced at the upper limit that I think Jeep could pull off, but it's worth it.

After owning a Subaru wagon for many years, my partner and I decided it was time for a change. We were looking for something with more style and personality, and we weren't interested in a CVT. That's when we discovered the Renegade, and we fell in love with it for several reasons. Firstly, the styling is simply posh! The attention to detail is impressive, and the thoughtful touches throughout the car make it stand out. Secondly, the cabin is incredibly spacious, and the leather seats are so comfortable. The suspension is also excellent, making it a smooth ride even on bumpy roads. Finally, the convenience features are top-notch, and we were pleasantly surprised that they didn't come with a premium price tag. The UConnect system is fantastic, and we love the Bluetooth setup and backup camera.

My wife and I, both in our seventies, chose the Renegade Limited as a compromise between the Chrysler 300 and the German Smart car. While I would have preferred the Chrysler 300, I found it difficult to enter and exit, and the Smart car was too small and not easy to enter and exit. The Renegade Limited, on the other hand, was very easy to enter and exit, and it has all the luxury features that I love. Despite having owned sports cars, I appreciate the Renegade's tight and responsive handling. When I hit full throttle on a curving freeway on-ramp, I can feel the g's, but the Renegade gives a secure, no-slip road hug. I have owned it for 16 months now and continue to discover nice features that are usually found only on more expensive vehicles, such as the back-up camera and collision warning system, awesome navigation/entertainment console, remote start, anti-theft features, and more. My wife feels more secure and safe in the Renegade Limited than in any previous car. It has airbags everywhere, seats that hold you surprisingly comfortably, and seat backs that would actually prevent whiplash due to the position of the headrest. I would not limit this model to only young adults. This old fart is really liking his Renegade!

I chose the TrailHawk because it had the 4-wheel drive system I was looking for. I can only speak to my experience with the Trailhawk, but I think it's a great choice. The only issue I've encountered is that the transmission can hesitate and shift gears a bit slowly on the highway.

I had a bit of a rough start with my vehicle, but I'm so glad I stuck with it through those first few months. Unfortunately, it did completely die on me twice, and I had to have it towed to the garage (thankfully, the dealer covered the cost). I was pretty upset, especially since it was a brand new car, but it turned out to be a minor issue with the battery connection. The service supervisor was able to quickly identify and fix the problem, and since then, I haven't had any issues with my Renegade. The dealer covered all expenses, so it was just a minor inconvenience for me. Overall, I highly recommend buying one - they're great!
