Jeep Renegade problems

The Jeep Renegade is a subcompact crossover SUV produced by Stellantis under their Jeep marque. It was first shown to the public in March 2014 at the Geneva Motor Show and production started in late August of that year. The Renegade was the smallest vehicle currently marketed by Jeep, until the arrival of the Avenger. It slots between the Avenger and the Compass. It is based on the FCA Small Wide 4×4 platform which is also shared with other FCA models, including from Fiat and Alfa Romeo brands.
The Renegade came standard with front-wheel drive, with optional four-wheel drive systems Active Drive I and Active Drive Low, both of which are paired with Jeep's Selec-Terrain System.
Overview
The Renegade is the first Jeep product to be produced exclusively outside of North America and has been sold in the North American, European, Brazilian, South African, Australian, Japanese and Chinese markets. The vehicle is built in Melfi, Italy with the designation BU/520, alongside the related Fiat 500X; Goiana, Brazil with the designation B1 (alongside Jeep Compass and Fiat Toro); and in Guangzhou, China codenamed BQ.
Standard Renegade models come with front-wheel drive, with four-wheel drive available on Sport, Latitude and Limited trims. In the US, the lineup consists of Sport, Latitude and Limited trims, all of which come with a choice of front- and four-wheel drive, as well as the Trailhawk trim, which is 4WD only.
The Renegade has an available My Sky dual-panel removable roof. The My Sky can be either retracted like a standard sunroof or removed completely for a more open-air experience, similar to that of the Jeep Wrangler.

The contact's head and face struck the steering wheel, causing a nosebleed. The vehicle spun and collided with two to three other occupied vehicles; however, the contact did not know if anyone was injured. The air bags did not deploy, and the seat belts failed to restrain the contact and her two minor children, seated in the rear passenger's and driver's side seats. The contact's child, who was sitting in the rear passenger's seat, was thrown into the trunk upon impact. The doors failed to unlock until the fire department arrived. The firefighters opened the door to evacuate the contact and her children. The contact and her children were transported to the hospital by ambulance, where police informed her that the vehicle that rear-ended her was driving at 90-95 MPH. The contact was unaware that police and fire department reports had been filed. The contact had body aches, and bruises on her stomach, legs, and back, and her left pinky was fractured. One of the contact's sons suffered from back and leg pain, while the other had headaches. The vehicle was towed to a tow yard and deemed totaled by the insurance company. - Date Complaint: 2024-10-22
- VIN: ZACCJBDT6GP
- Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,EXTERIOR LIGHTING
- Summary: While driving around I suddenly got an alert from the car that the driver's side back up light, left turn signal light/rear tail light was no longer functioning. I had to drive around without people driving behind me knowing of any intent to turn left, which was a safety issue. I took it to an independent mechanic who replaced the bulbs and everything was back to normal, but only for 30 minutes. The same thing happened again on my drive home and I had to turn around to take it back to the mechanic. Upon further investigation, the mechanic noted that the connector for the light was burnt out and thus, causing a faulty connection, that had nothing to do with the lights themselves, and that could fail at any time. In trying to get a new connector, the mechanic found that they are on backorder, presumably because this is an issue being faced by numerous jeep renegade owners. So now, even if I wanted to fix the problem, I can't, which again, is a safety issue.

Update 12/21/2016: Hi there! Just wanted to share my experience with the Renegade so far. I'm still absolutely thrilled with it! I purchased it new in May 2016 and it now has 6000 miles on it. The only issue I've had was a loose wire to a running light, which caused an intermittent dash warning over 6 months of driving. But I took it to the dealer yesterday and they fixed it - no more warnings on the drive home! The Renegade has been my daily driver and I'm happy to report that it has exceeded both the manufacturer's estimate and my own expectations for fuel efficiency. In mixed driving, it reliably gets about 33 mpg, and on a recent strictly highway trip, it averaged an impressive 43 mpg! Even when we crawled home in bumper-to-bumper Los Angeles traffic on the return trip, it still averaged 39 mpg for the round trip! I was initially concerned that I would be spending more on gas driving the Renegade instead of the VW Beetle it replaced, but that hasn't been the case at all. My husband is also a big fan of the Renegade - he loves that it can Fast forward about 18 months, I decided to look up the Renegade online out of curiosity to check reviews. To my surprise, I found huge manufacturer and dealer incentives on the remaining 2015s in stock. I thought to myself, 'Oh my, I can get a brand new Jeep (actually a Fiat) for about the same price I paid for a new 2001 VW Beetle years ago!' Another big plus for me was the availability of a manual transmission. I was sorely tempted at this point despite the VW's reliability, and headed for the Jeep dealer. Let me assure you that going to an American car dealer was quite a step for me! The first dealer did not have what I was looking for, but the second dealer did. I had been doing all the shopping and research, and was quite sure we were going home with the Renegade, so I asked my husband to come along to look at the Renegade and drive the VW home. He was amazed at the good value and quality of the Renegade! The Renegade continues to please with 30+mpg in combined driving, and the car is very willing to move. The engine and manual transmission are smooth! It is very quiet and roomy inside, good sized adults will fit in the back seat, and it is simply easy to deal with. It actually is a utility vehicle. It does not rattle or have wind noise. It has some nice touches inside like soft lighting, the seats are comfortable, and I'm really enjoying the SiriusXM radio trial. I am thrilled to not have to drive a 50 mile round trip for service since I have two Jeep dealers close by. I have not owned the vehicle long enough to comment on durability, but I believe the build quality is good. A family member who worked at a high level job for another car manufacturer looked at it and was impressed by the quality. At this point, I am very satisfied with the Renegade. I keep my vehicles for a long time, drive them carefully, and have them maintained on schedule. I expect that this vehicle will last.

Vehicle year: 2022
I recently test drove the Renegade and I must say, I was thoroughly impressed. The vehicle was sleek and stylish, with a beautiful all-black interior and exterior. It had almost every option I was looking for, and the engine was incredibly responsive. The transmission shifted quickly, although it did take a mile or two to get used to. Once I hit the freeway, I opened the sunroof and was met with a rush of fresh air. However, it did let in quite a bit of outside noise, so be prepared to turn up the volume on the sound system. The infotainment system was easy to use and had a fast response time, with a large 8.4 inch uConnect screen. The power leather seats were incredibly comfortable and easy to adjust to the perfect position. Despite the black headliner, the interior felt spacious and roomy. Even during a record-breaking heatwave in Las Vegas, the A/C worked perfectly. Moving to the rear seating area, I was pleasantly surprised to find that I had plenty of legroom, even with the driver's seat pushed back. There was also ample headroom for everyone, front and back. The cargo area was more than adequate, with a compartment under the floor to store the removable sunroof panels. The exterior of the Renegade was just as impressive, with beautiful 19-inch wheels painted in a sleek granite color. Overall, I highly recommend the Renegade for anyone in the market for a stylish and comfortable vehicle. What prevented me from purchasing? It was the dealership. The car was discounted by $5K, but that was only due to the rebate. Unfortunately, they didn't even bother to negotiate with me. Even though I was upside down on my current vehicle, I wasn't willing to pay over thirty grand ($34K to be exact) for a Renegade that had been sitting on their lot for six months. This was even with their rebate. As a result, Jim Marsh Chrysler/Jeep/Dodge/Ram lost a customer. However, I was able to find the exact same Renegade with the exact same options at a dealer 250 miles away (Lake Elsinore Chrysler/Jeep/Dodge/Ram) for four grand less. They gave me a better rebate and took an additional $4500 discount. Oh, and I used TrueCar to get an additional thousand dollars off the price. With my less than perfect credit, I was still able to buy the Renegade for significantly less than what Jim Marsh tried to shackle me into. I'll be driving my new black Jeep Renegade home in the coming days. When shopping around, take your time. Do your research. Know the pros and cons of the make and model you want, read the reviews, take the car/truck for a real test drive and shop around dealers in the area. By being patient and sticking to my guns, I saved over $8K off MSRP. I hope this review was helpful to you. Thank you for reading!

This Renegade is a great ride. It sits a little higher than your average sedan, but it's easy to see over the hood and easy to park.

Vehicle year: 2015
I had never considered owning a domestic vehicle until I came across the Renegade. After taking it for a test ride, I was sold. In the past 11 years, I have owned 2 Hondas, 1 Toyota, and 1 VW, all brand new. Living in the Northeast, I needed a vehicle that could handle the nasty winter commute and occasional camping trips, so I was looking for an AWD/4x4 with good fuel mileage and mild off-road capability. Only a few small SUVs fit the bill, and my choices were between the Subaru XV Crosstrek and the Jeep Renegade. While I won't say much about the Subaru, I will say that it was under-powered and lacked details compared to the Renegade. The Renegade's interior is impressive, with illuminated cup holders and center console, comfortable and supportive seats, and great forward visibility. The instrument panel with built-in LCD screen is very informative with an intuitive layout, and the infotainment system with touch screen is easy to navigate while driving. I love how the car can stream music from my phone via Bluetooth without me having to touch it, and the sound quality is impressive for an entry-level vehicle. The exterior design is also impressive, with plenty of design details and good paint quality. The engine is relatively quiet for a domestic vehicle, and it has plenty of power to pass other vehicles on the interstate. The only let-down is the transmission. There is a slight lag and hesitation in gear change under spirited acceleration, but it's smooth enough and tolerable. The Renegade's performance is agile and the steering is accurate and nicely weighed, although it lacks the feedback of a sport sedan or luxury crossover. Body-roll under spirited driving is well controlled, especially considering it's a JEEP! I have not yet driven in snow, but I did drive it off the dealership lot in pouring rain. I got the chance to push it a little bit through some back roads in heavy rain. Not once did I feel the traction control or ABS kick in, and the vehicle didn't slide during sharp turns. The body panels did not make any rattling noise on rough road surfaces. In the past 300 miles, I was able to achieve an average of 27 miles per gallon. I was getting 30mpg on the interstate around 65mph. I would expect gas mileage to slightly improve as the engine breaks in. Overall, I am very impressed with how Jeep has come out with such a great product. It's a perfect blend of ruggedness, performance, comfort, and style. Let's face it, we all want a Wrangler at some point in life but can't justify the fuel efficiency, comfort, or practicality for everyday commute. And Jeep has finally given us a perfect compromise. Trade-in value and reliability are the only two concerns I have at this point, and only time will tell.

The comfort level and features of my Renegade Trailhawk were excellent. However, I am currently going through a buy-back process due to some reliability issues. Additionally, the engine has a tendency to cut power at inopportune times, such as when pulling out with cross traffic coming. The gas tank is also quite small and the gas mileage is worse than advertised. Furthermore, the 9 speed transmission paired with a 4-cylinder engine and a few other small items have been a bit of a disappointment. Despite these issues, I am hopeful that the buy-back process will be smooth and I can find a vehicle that better suits my needs.

The car has had a few issues, including some trouble with the transmission and brakes. However, the dealership has been very helpful in providing loaner cars and making repairs. While there have been some delays, the team has been working hard to get everything fixed. We are currently pursuing the lemon law, but remain optimistic that a resolution can be reached. Thank you for your understanding and support throughout this process.

I recently purchased a 2020 Jeep Renegade with only 11 miles on it. Unfortunately, I was not informed that the vehicle required a software upgrade at the time of purchase. During the first 30 days of owning the vehicle, I experienced some issues such as difficulty turning off the car and malfunctioning windows. Additionally, the car consumes a lot of gas and drives roughly. When I brought the car in for service, I was advised to disconnect the battery for 5 minutes to restart the car. Although the software upgrade was eventually completed, I am still not completely satisfied with the vehicle's performance. Despite my attempts to request a buyback, Chrysler refused to comply. As a result, I am currently driving a car that I am not comfortable with and making large payments. I hope that Chrysler can address these issues and improve their customer service. I will also be cautious about purchasing another Chrysler, Jeep, Dodge, or Fiat vehicle in the future. Thank you for your attention to this matter.

I have owned my Jeep Renegade for three months and 4200 miles. Unfortunately, it stalled out on me three times recently. I immediately contacted the dealership's service department, but no engine light came on. They informed me that there have been similar issues and suggested that I check my oil. Shockingly, the dipstick was dry, and it had already burned through 5+ quarts of oil. It appears that I have been driving with less than one quart of oil, which is a major concern. I am surprised that no low oil dash light came on. After reading other complaints, it seems that this is not an isolated issue. I am now considering going through the lemon law, which could be a challenging process. It is imperative that something is done to address this problem.

I purchased a 2017 Jeep Renegade Trailhawk from a Jeep, Chrysler, Dodge dealership five months ago. It had 49,000 miles on it and they gave me a bumper-to-bumper warranty for 160,000 miles. Unfortunately, within a month, I had to have the rotors and brake pads replaced. After two trips back to the dealership and threatening to take it to my mechanic, the service manager finally acknowledged the issue. I have always taken my cars to an auto shop, told them the problem, and they figure it out and fix it. However, this dealership will only report the issue if it doesn't do it to me, and I can fix it. This week, my Jeep died on a bridge over the river during rush hour without any warning lights coming on. The Jeep would start and all interior lights were on, but nothing would happen when I pressed on the accelerator. I had it towed home to empty my work supplies and 600 lbs of animal feed, and then towed it to the dealership the next morning where I had purchased it. Both tow truck drivers had tried to start the Jeep to get it on their trucks without success. At the dealership, the service tech got it started and told me that the jostling around from the tow truck must have knocked something loose. Since I drive 100-200 miles a day for work as a home health care therapist in very rural areas without cell phone service, I insisted that they find out why it happened and fix it. The service department charged me $110 for 'reprogramming the transmission,' which they state is considered routine maintenance not covered by my bumper-to-bumper warranty. I have also had warning lights come on stating my rear lights were out when they were not. Since doing this research, I have found out that these are all issues that have been brought to the manufacturer's attention, and no recall has been issued. My fear is the Jeep stalling on a two-lane blacktop on hills or a blind curve and being rear-ended, causing an accident or being stranded in a rural area without cell service in bad weather. The dealership in Jefferson City, MO, from whom I purchased the vehicle, keeps telling me they can't fix a problem they can't replicate. It's frustrating to hear that, especially when I found out that these issues are common problems with Jeep Renegades just by doing a quick Google search. It's concerning that it might take a tragic accident and a class action suit to get the manufacturer to remedy these issues.
