2001 Audi A8 problems

audi logo

The Audi A8 is a full-size luxury sedan manufactured and marketed by the German automaker Audi since 1994. Succeeding the Audi V8, and now in its fourth generation, the A8 has been offered with both front- or permanent all-wheel drive—and in short- and long-wheelbase variants. The first two generations employed the Volkswagen Group D platform, with the current generation deriving from the MLB platform. After the original model's 1994 release, Audi released the second generation in late 2002, the third in late 2009, and the fourth and current iteration in 2017. Noted as the first mass-market car with an aluminium chassis, all A8 models have used this construction method co-developed with Alcoa and marketed as the Audi Space Frame.

A mechanically upgraded, high-performance version of the A8 debuted in 1996 as the Audi S8. Produced exclusively at Audi's Neckarsulm plant, the S8 is fitted standard with Audi's quattro all-wheel drive system. The S8 was only offered with a short-wheelbase for the first three generations, being joined by a long-wheelbase variant for the fourth generation.

D2 (Typ 4D; 1994–2002)

Development

In 1982, Ferdinand Piëch signed an agreement with Aluminum Company of America. The objective was to design and develop a car that would be substantially lighter than any other vehicles in its class (to compensate for the fact that standard all-wheel drive was around 100 kg (220 lb) heavier than competitors' rear-wheel drive). In the late 1980s, it was decided that the target vehicle would be a successor to the V8 (Typ 4C) flagship introduced in 1988. By 1990, a final design by Chris Bird and Dirk van Braeckel was chosen and frozen for series production in mid-1991. In September 1993, the Audi Space Frame (ASF) Concept was unveiled at the 1993 Frankfurt Motor Show (IAA) as a D2 Typ 4D prototype in polished aluminum. Pilot production began in December 1993 and development ended in early 1994, at a total cost of $700 million (£418.1 million).

WHEELS PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2018-12-01
  • Crash: 1
  • Components: WHEELS
  • Summary: A8L [QUATTRO, ALL WHEEL DRIVE] IN EARLY DECEMBER OF 2018, I ORDERED 4 TIRES FROM WALMART ONLINE FOR MY 2001 AUDI . THEY WERE 245/45/18 SUPERMAX 100V TM-1. THE TIRE SIZE WAS EXACTLY AS RECOMMENDED ON THE B-PILLAR AND EXACTLY THE SAME SIZE AS THE TIRES THAT WERE ON THE CAR WHEN THESE NEW TIRES WERE ORDERED. THE ONLINE AD FOR THE TIRES SPECIFICALLY STATED "ASK US TO INSTALL" [THE TIRES]. I HAD THEM SHIPPED TO THE WALMART ON QUEBEC AND E-470 IN ENGLEWOOD, COLORADO. WHEN THEY ARRIVED, "TED" THE ASSISTANT TIRE DEPARTMENT MANAGER, REFUSED TO MOUNT THEM AND REFUSED TO SELL ME ROAD HAZARD INSURANCE. I WENT TO THE MANAGER "SAMANTHA" TO COMPLAIN, BUT SHE BACK UP TED SAYING THE COMPANY HAD A WRITTEN POLICY NOT TO INSTALL THE TIRES OR SELL ROAD HAZARD INSURANCE FOR THEM. WHEN I ASKED TO SEE THE POLICY SHE SAID THAT AT THE BOTTOM OF THE WRITTEN POLICY WAS SPECIFIC LANGUAGE THAT IT WAS NOT FOR THE PUBLIC TO VIEW. I HAD TWO OF THE TIRES PUT ON BY AN INDEPENDENT TIRE COMPANY AND THE OTHER TWO BY ANOTHER WALMART WHO INDICATED THEY WOULD INSTALL THEM BUT THEY WOULD NOT PROVIDE ROAD HAZARD INSURANCE. ALMOST IMMEDIATLY, ONE OF THE TIRES WENT FLAT WHILE I WAS DRIVING ON A CURVY ROAD [HWY 74 BETWEEN MORRISON AND EVERGREEN] AND RUINED THE TIRE. I DIDN'T SEE ANY NAILS OR PUNCTURES IN THE TIRE. PRETTY SOON TWO MORE OF THE TIRES DID THE SAME THING WHEN GOING AROUND A CORNER. FINALLY, I WAS DRIVING ON I-70 AT ABOUT 50 MILES PER HOUR BY THE CHIEF HOSA EXIT DRIVING WESTBOUND. THE ROADS WERE NOT SNOW PACKED BUT WERE ICY. ALL OF A SUDDEN THE RIGHT REAR TIRE LOST AIR, THE CAR DID A 360 AND ENDED UP IN A SLIGHT DITCH ON THE EXIT. IT DID $7000 PLUS DAMAGE TO THE FRONT END. I BELIEVE EITHER THE SIDEWALLS OR THE BEAD ARE FAULTY AND WHEN GOING ON A CURVE, THE BEAD SEPARATES FROM THE WHEEL CAUSING IT TO LEAK AND THEN QUICKLY DEFLATE.

VEHICLE SPEED CONTROL PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2024-11-24
  • VIN: WAUYP64B61N
  • Components: VEHICLE SPEED CONTROL
  • Summary: THIS IS AN INTERMITTENT PROBLEM THAT HAPPENS WHEN THE CAR IS DRIVEN FOR AT LEAST 15 MINUTES AND IS BROUGHT TO A FULL STOP. WHEN THE GAS PEDAL IS DEPRESSED, THE ENGINE REMAINS AT IDLE FROM BETWEEN 1 TO 3 SECONDS AND THE CAR DOES NOT MOVE. DURING THIS TIME FRAME, THE FOOT REMAINS DEPRESSING THE GAS PEDAL AND NOT ON THE BRAKE PEDAL. ONCE THE ENGINE RPMS DO INCREASE, THE CAR WILL ACCELERATE HARD (JUMP). SEVERAL INSTANCES HAVE OCCURRED WERE THE CAR JUMPED INTO A BUSY INTERSECTION, NEARLY CAUSING AN ACCIDENT EACH TIME. MY CHILDREN WERE IN THE CAR DURING THOSE TIMES. THIS PROBLEM WAS NOT ONLY EXPERIENCE BY MYSELF, BUT WITH MY WIFE AND A FRIEND (WHO USED TO PERFORM SAFETY TESTS FOR PORSCHE) AND BOTH HAVE DRIVEN THE CAR. THE CAR HAS BEEN BROUGHT IN SEVERAL TIMES FOR THIS SPECIFIC PROBLEM BUT IT COULD NOT BE REPRODUCED AT THAT TIME AND NOTHING DONE TO IT OTHER THAN A SOFTWARE PATCH APPLIED TO THE TIPTRONIC CONTROL MODULE (TCM). THIS DID NOT FIX THE PROBLEM AS IT STILL EXISTS.*AK

Negative 2001 Audi A8 car reviews

  1. Sean Borer 2024-11-20

The car has had multiple issues, including rattling and electronic failures. Despite attempts to fix the problems, they persist. Audi has not provided any assistance in resolving these issues, even after speaking with high-level customer service personnel. Overall, I would not recommend purchasing this car.

  2. Easter Russel 2024-06-20

Your vehicle has been a constant source of satisfaction from both a design and function point of view. The Quattro is simply amazing, especially when you live on top of a mountain in NE. Your car gets many looks and is both classy and understated, yet luxurious, especially with the rear and side shades up. The formula shifting and 310 HP make it a powerful and luxurious vehicle. It's a shame that Audi can't engineer a car that's as reliable as it is enjoyable.

Positive 2001 Audi A8 car reviews

  1. Rowan Cartwright 2024-10-25

Over the past three years, my A8L has spent almost as much time in the shop as it has in the garage. Thankfully, it was Certified, so aside from the $50 deductible and inconvenience, the repairs have been relatively painless. Here is a list of the issues that have been addressed: Thermostat (replaced along with timing belt @ 50K miles), vacuum hoses/connectors, Torque converter/Transmission (required replacement), peeling console material, etc. etc. etc....

  2. Laron Satterfield 2024-09-20

This is a great vehicle for a full size sedan. It has plenty of power and drives like a sports car.

  3. Wendell Hartmann 2024-09-19

The car drives like a dream! It may be a little slow off the line, but once it gets going, wow! There's plenty of room and many upgrades. When looking in the large sedan category, this is definitely a must-consider.

  4. Christop Stiedemann 2024-08-05

Congratulations on your new A8! It sounds like you made an excellent choice. I appreciate your detailed comparison to other luxury cars and your positive feedback on the gas mileage, interior, acceleration, ride & handling, and all-time 4WD. The Bose sound system and navigation system also sound impressive. While the exterior design may be conservative, it still exudes understated affluence. Thank you for sharing your experience with us!

  5. Amparo Treutel 2024-07-10

What a fantastic car! After owning an Audi 5000, I never thought I would buy another Audi. However, renting an A4 in Europe convinced me that Audi has come a long way. The first thing that attracted me to the A8 was its superbly understated styling. Once I drove it, I was hooked! It is the finest car I have ever driven. It is luxurious in a subtle way which perfectly suits my style. I like that it is relatively scarce, but I am surprised it isn't a bigger seller. I especially love the light, agile, but confident feeling I get from this aluminum-bodied all-wheel driver.
