2017 Jeep Patriot problems

The Jeep Patriot (MK74) is a front-engine five-door compact crossover SUV manufactured and marketed by Jeep, having debuted with the Jeep Compass in April 2006 at the New York Auto Show for the 2007 model year. Both cars, as well as Dodge Caliber shared the GS platform, differentiated by their styling and marketing, with the Patriot exclusively offering a four-wheel drive system, marketed as Freedom Drive II.

The Patriot was manufactured at Chrysler's Belvidere, Illinois assembly plant alongside the Compass. Although the model was still selling well even as it was essentially unchanged as it entered its 11th model year, production ended with the 2017 model year.

Design

In the U.S. the Patriot uses either the 2.0 L or 2.4 L World gasoline I4 engine. Both front-wheel drive and four-wheel drive are available. The Patriot features two four-wheel drive systems both of which are electronically controlled.

The standard four-wheel drive system is called Freedom Drive I. This is a full-time Automatic 4WD that directly drives the front differential carrier from the transmission output and is exclusively front-wheel drive whenever 4WD is not commanded by the powertrain control module or the driver. The transaxle supplies power to the rear drive unit via a driveshaft that is in constant mesh with the front carrier. The driveshaft joins the front transaxle through a small, fixed ratio gearbox which Jeep refers to as the Power Transfer Unit. The driveshaft is suspended by a centrally mounted carrier bearing and delivers torque to an assembly at the rear of the vehicle Jeep refers to as the Rear Drive Unit. An electronically controlled multi-plate wet clutch located inside the rear drive unit variably couples this driveshaft with a pinion gear that drives an open differential carrier and delivers power to the rear wheels. The clutch coupling force is sufficient to supply up to 100% of available engine torque to the rear axle. A driver accessible control located between the front seats allows the driver to command a locked 4wd mode that simulates the behavior of a fixed center coupling on a conventional 4WD vehicle. In both the default operating mode and the driver selected 4WD mode, the operation of this clutch is computer controlled and it will disconnect and revert to automatic operation above 35 miles per hour. To prevent static driveline windup the powertrain controller will vary the force of clutch engagement while the vehicle is traveling on a curved path, using input from a steering angle sensor.

An optional four-wheel drive system called Freedom Drive II is based on Freedom Drive I and operates similarly, however in combination with a unique CVT transmission it is capable of a 19:1 gear reduction simulating a low range usually found in vehicles with dedicated transfer cases. This 19:1 "crawl" ratio is achieved with a much lower (numerically higher) ring and pinion ratio compared to non Freedom Drive II vehicles and permits the driver to optionally hold this initial ratio for enhanced control at very low speeds.

Freedom Drive II is part of an equipment package including several other enhancements intended for use on more difficult terrain and Jeep Patriots with this package bear Jeep's "Trail Rated" badging.

All Jeep Patriots include an enhanced traction control system that operates on both driven axles (4WD models) or on the front axle only (2WD models) to supply torque to all four wheels effectively and without a locking or limited slip differential. This system is branded BLD by Jeep and operates by applying braking force to a wheel on either (driven) axle if that wheel is measured spinning faster than the other wheel on the same axle. BLD remains in effect even if the driver selects the traction control off option.

The 2.4 L GEMA I4 is an option for the 4X2 model Patriot.

For Europe and Australia, a 2.0 L (1968 cc; 120 cid; 140ps) Volkswagen-manufactured diesel engine is fitted along with a 6-speed manual gearbox. All EU cars are fitted as standard with four wheel drive and a version of the Freedom Drive System that tuned differently from the U.S. versions, but with similar capability to FDII with brake traction control and three switchable electronic stability control and traction control settings for on or off-road use.

The Patriot won the 2007 Green 4x4 Award and the 2008 4x4 of the Year in the UK.

Common 2017 Jeep Patriot problems

The Jeep Patriot, introduced in 2007, has been a popular choice for those seeking a compact SUV with distinctive Jeep styling and off-road capability. However, like any vehicle, the 2017 Jeep Patriot has its fair share of common problems reported by owners.

One of the most prevalent issues with the 2017 Jeep Patriot is the premature failure of its Continuous Variable Transmission (CVT).

Another common problem with the 2017 Jeep Patriot is water leaking into the cabin, which can lead to electrical issues and mold growth. This problem can be a significant inconvenience and may require costly repairs to rectify.

The 2017 Jeep Patriot's base engine has also been criticized for being unrefined and sluggish, particularly when paired with the droning CVT. This can make for an uncomfortable driving experience, especially on long trips or in heavy traffic.

The steering wheel in the 2017 Jeep Patriot does not telescope, which can make it difficult for some drivers to find a comfortable driving position. This issue can be particularly problematic for taller drivers, who may find it challenging to maintain a comfortable and safe driving position.

Finally, the 2017 Jeep Patriot has subpar crash test scores, which can be a significant concern for safety-conscious drivers. This issue, combined with the vehicle's unsophisticated ride quality and minimal cargo space, can make it a less appealing choice for some buyers.

In summary, the 2017 Jeep Patriot has several common problems, including premature CVT failure, water leaking into the cabin, an unrefined and sluggish base engine, a non-telescoping steering wheel, and subpar crash test scores. These issues can make for an uncomfortable and potentially hazardous driving experience, and may require costly repairs to rectify.

POWER TRAIN,ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,ENGINE PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2020-11-02
  • VIN: 1C4NJRBB6HD
  • Components: POWER TRAIN,ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,ENGINE
  • Summary: On 10/27/2020, I financed a Jeep Patriot with 43K miles from Quality Chevrolet. Exactly 6 days later 11/02/2020, while I was on the way home from work in the evening; three sensor lights came on causing the vehicle to jolt / jerk / accelerate and become unsafe to drive. There were cars behind me, I turned on the hazard lights and my car went from 25 MPH to 2 MPH instantly. The lights were ABS, Traction and check engine. I immediately contacted the dealership since I had the Jeep for less than a week. I had to take the risk of driving the car in this condition for 6 miles on a highway back to the dealership, stopping every few minutes to shut off the Jeep and restart to try to reset the sensors, which seemed to work 2 minutes at a time. A drive that would normally take about 15 minutes took over an hour. My Jeep was being paid for weekly and still being serviced at the dealership- On 11/17/2020, I received a call from the dealership that they cleaned out the throttle body as recommended by Jeep and since that was the only sensor active at the time; they told me that no other lights were on so they were driving the Jeep to try to activate them. I was told by Quality Chevrolet that Jeep recommended to clean out the throttle and return to me, if the lights come back on, to go back to the dealer and replace the part. After weeks at Quality Chevrolet, my jeep was returned to me, however 5 days later on 12/07/2020 the same sensors came on in the middle of a highway when I was going about 55 MPH and it was raining I had to find a way to get my vehicle to safety and this caused a lot of anxiety as my kids were in the Jeep this time. I did not get into an accident by a miracle but now I was stranded on the highway. Til this day, Quality Chevrolet nor the 3 other places I have been to have been able to properly diagnose this problem that continues to happen without warning. My jeep will not go over 20 MPH, RPM stays on 2 and all sensors are active.

Negative 2017 Jeep Patriot car reviews

  1. Thad Ward 2024-10-12

I recently purchased a 2011 Jeep, but unfortunately, I have experienced some issues with it. I have had to replace the front lower control arms, the front passenger 'half shaft', and the front wheel bearings. Additionally, I have had to replace the passenger side one again. During rain storms, water pours in through the front top inside ceiling lights onto the dash and the light just behind the front seats, causing the ceiling fabric to get soaked. Although this seems to be a common issue with this Jeep model, I still enjoy using it on snowy roads. While I have had some challenges with this vehicle, I believe that it is still a reliable option. I have found that Chrysler offers affordable vehicles that are accessible to many people.

If you're looking for an SUV that's good on gas, this might not be the best option for you. However, the exterior design is nice and the Bluetooth system inside is of good quality. It may not be the most fuel-efficient, but it is still a great choice for those who prioritize other features.

  3. Gene Rogahn 2024-10-02

Hi there! I recently rented a few cars after my own car was totaled in an accident. I've had a lot of experience with different cars, having owned a '97 Audi A4 for 5 years. I've driven everything from Buick LeSabres to Geo Metros and everything in between, including lots of Tauruses, and I've never had to return a car early. However, my recent experience with a Camry and a Jeep left me feeling a bit uneasy. The Camry had some front-end issues, so I swapped it for the Jeep, but unfortunately, the torque steer was so bad that I felt unsafe driving it. The interior seemed cheaply built, the stereo was subpar, and the rear mirror was difficult to adjust. I ended up swapping the Jeep for a Hyundai, which was a much better fit for me. I was surprised that a 2017 car could have such issues, but I'm glad I found a car that I felt comfortable driving. Thanks for listening!

Hello, I hope this message finds you well. I wanted to share my experience with the rear seat belts in my car. During a test drive, I noticed that they were not locking properly. The dealer assured me that it would be fixed, so I went ahead and purchased the car. Unfortunately, a few months later, I had a scary incident where the seat belt retracted by itself and put a lot of pressure on my 8-year-old autistic son, making it difficult for him to breathe. The rescue unit had to cut the belt to free him. When the dealership checked the belts, they found that they only lock some of the time. I have been in touch with Chrysler's case manager, but the dealership suggested that I get an attorney, as they believe that Chrysler may not take responsibility for this issue. I am currently in contact with a law firm. Thank you for taking the time to read my message.

  5. Jayson Greenholt 2024-07-20

I was given this Jeep as a rental while my car was being repaired after it was hit while parked. Although I have had some less than ideal experiences with it, I must say that the air conditioning is a plus. However, I have had some trouble with the acceleration, braking, handling, engine, shifting, and especially the mirrors. They can be quite misleading and I have had a few close calls because of them. Despite these issues, I am grateful to have a car to drive and I am looking forward to getting my own car back soon. If you are considering renting this Jeep, I would advise against it and suggest looking for other options.

I purchased this car back in 2009 with only 13k miles on it. Fortunately, just before the warranty ran out, the clutch went out at 300 miles. The dealer replaced it at no cost to me, which was a relief since it was a $2600 job! Since then, I have had no major issues with the car. I simply change the oil and go. Although it's not a 4x4, it's a FWD stick shift, which gives me better control in the snow. I still get 30 miles per gallon on the highway, and I only need to fill up about 1.5 times per week, with an average cost of $26.00 per fill-up. The Jeep has plenty of room for storage and moving things around. The opening is wider than most cars in its size comparison. Overall, I have been very happy with it, but I am getting tired of the stick shift at my age. The only two issues I have with it are that it doesn't handle wind well, probably due to its boxy build, and the factory tires are terrible. However, investing in great all-weather tires and snow tires in the winter has made a world of difference for any car. Although I am now seeking a heavier car for my 10+ hour work week, I will not trade in my Patriot. I plan to keep it as a secondary car and drive it all the way to 200k miles!

Love everything about it! It's so spacious, great on gas, and rides incredibly smoothly.

Hey there! I hope you're doing well. I just wanted to let you know that I'm really impressed with how this used vehicle is running and looking, even though it's only day two. :)

I recently purchased a 2017 High Altitude 4x4 and I absolutely love it! The vehicle has a lot of great features such as 4x4 at any speed, heated leather seats (with electric driver's seat and lumbar support), a good AM-FM, CD, Sat, Bluetooth stereo, sunroof, and an AC inverter. My wife is now interested in purchasing one for herself, even though the newest model available would be a 2017.
